M!Eden/F!Reader
Word count: 3 K
Warnings: Soft Dark!Reader, dubious morality, emotional manipulation, referenced/implied child abuse, touch-starved Eden, period-typical sexism and beliefs, explicit sexual content, medieval fantasy
Summary: What better man to kill your father than his own beast?
A/N: In which Eden falls for Bailey's hellspawn. Also, this is unashamedly based on the worldbuilding of Game of Thrones, lol.
chapter 1 - chapter 2 - chapter 3
Tumblr media
Even after all these years, her portrait still is the most beautiful thing in the castle.
She wears a golden dress in honor of her House's banner and the delicately worked embroidery that adorns her chest highlights the black jewel hanging from her neck. And it's such a shame that only now, as you watch the servant girls struggle to remove the painting from the wall, do you realize that the gem resembles your House’s sigil, a raven.
She used to haunt your every waking thought when you were a child. And you knew even then that she was your Mother by the way she resembled you so closely, even if no one wanted to tell you about her. Servants avoided your eyes while Father always dismissed you, but not before you could glimpse something dangerous lurking under his skin whenever you asked about her.
You remember how the ring felt breaking your skin when he struck you with his hand and blood ran down your face. All you did was to insist on knowing. It left you perturbed for days, even more so when the old physician had to sew your wound shut. You didn’t know it then, but it was the first hit of many to come.
You breathe out slowly, smoothing the fabric of your dress and reminding yourself that you have experienced worse at his hands. That memory is nothing. And while it leaves you uneasy, it doesn’t shake you anymore.
There’s only anger left in you.
You keep your burning range close as the servants give you a brief goodbye and leave the hall, taking with them the painting of Mother. You’ll never see her again. The portrait of another woman will take its place and all you knew of her will be left to rot in a dark place.
You stroke its fire when you arrive at Father’s wedding and take your place with the rest of the guests. You see him covering the bride with his cloak, marking her as his wife and Lady of  Stonecrate. She looks beautiful in her gown, a young naive thing walking right into a nest of hungry ravens.
You let it consume you when the feast begins, a pleasant smile on your lips at all times. Father mentions that he’ll start looking for a match for you, an offhand comment that nobody but you understand for what it truly is: once he has a son with Lady Aleyn, he will make you marry and disappear to never touch your rightful heritage. But your smile does not waver.
You talk when Father prompts you to and listen when he does not. You present the perfect picture of a devoted lady, all while you examine the ocean of dancing bodies in front of you, searching through the guests when the waves recede and let you see the other side of the room.
And there, standing alone in a corner dressed in full armor, you find him. The Hound. A man of such size that he’s believed to possess giant blood, feared for his strength, and who’s rumored to be so hideous that the sole sight of his face can kill. And while you know that no man can do that with his ugliness alone, the rumor must have some substance if he prefers to wear that —a sinister helmet shaped like a snarling hound’s head— than to show his face at all.
It's amusing how much he stands out with his armor in an ocean of gowns and yet no one acknowledges his existence… except you. He must feel it too, because he faces your direction and the weight of his gaze falls on your shoulders. You give him a coy smile as if you were embarrassed that he caught you staring, but you don't shy away from his gaze.
And then, the waves of dancing bodies fill the room again and shield you from his eyes.
Your smile sharpens into a smirk that you're quick to wash away with some wine. Smirks aren't for good girls and there is a facade to maintain, but it's hard to do so when you can see the seeds of your revenge growing in the ground.
Everyone has a weakness, a desire that can make them give up everything for the chance of fulfilling it. And you know men like the Hound, dangerous wild things that only known of battle and suffering, laughed at by the nobles they serve and avoided by the smallfolk.
A life of such loneliness must leave a man starving for connection. And he looks so frightening, so dangerous and so, so lonely. A soft touch there, a shy smile once in a while… before he even notices you’ll slip through the cracks on his armor and possess his heart.
It’ll make it all the more satisfying when Father dies at the hands of his own beast. You can nearly picture his shocked expression as he dies at your feet. He’ll never expect his right-hand man to betray him for his worthless daughter!
You suppress your laughter and take a sip of wine. This day —you decide while watching the people dance in front of your eyes— is the beginning of his end. He isn’t Father anymore and you aren’t his puppet any longer.
Raise crows and they'll gouge your eyes out.
Lord Bailey never treated you like a raven, after all.
Tumblr media
Lady Aleyn happens to be a sweet and trusting woman, so much in fact that she accepted your offer to show her the castle without a second thought. She took your arm in hers and allowed you to guide her around the gardens, sharing with you her memories whenever a peculiar flower reminded her of something.
You listen carefully, telling her some of your experiences but never taking the attention away from her. You know everyone likes to feel important, especially noblewomen who are used to being ignored in favor of male siblings, fathers, and husbands. Lady Aleyn isn’t any different.
“I was worried that we…,” a blush colors her cheeks and she averts your gaze, focusing instead on the white rose at her side. You truly hope that Lord Bailey doesn’t break her too soon. “That we wouldn’t get along, at least not so fast. I’m pleased to see I was wrong.”
You take her hand in your own, directing her attention to you once more and mirroring her hopeful smile.
“I’m happy too,” and then, just to improve your performance, you pause for a moment as if you were hesitating and meekly add: “...Mother.”
The effect is immediate, she beams at you and squeezes your hands, looking relieved to have found a friend in this foreign land. You smile back, confident that you have gained her favor.
She remains joyful for the rest of the evening and when the sun begins to set, you walk her back to her chambers.
You know that Lord Eden must be patrolling these parts of the castle before taking his leave for the night. You can’t approach him without an excuse, since it would reveal that you have ulterior motives, but you can haunt the periphery of his existence until he decides to come closer.
And true to your prediction, he appears around the corner as you're walking through the corridor that leads to your destination. Lady Aleyn stiffens beside you, no doubt afraid of the man, but you encourage her to keep going with a soft push on her back.
“My lord,” you greet him once he's close enough, keeping your heart steady as he engulfs your vision with his frame.
You don't want to admit it, but he does look rather frightening under the dim light of the torches and the helmet doesn't do him any favors. He seems like an omen of death. It makes you conscious of the fact that he's an experienced killer and there is nowhere to run between these narrow walls, but you dismiss your fears before he notices them. He needs to believe that you welcome him if you're to gain his trust.
Lord Eden doesn't respond, but his helmet moves briefly in your direction as he walks past.
It’s difficult to manipulate someone when you can’t see their face, but the fact he chose to acknowledge you it’s enough for now. Feeling satisfied, you resume your walk as Lady Aleyn clutches your arm, her fear the perfect contrast to your acceptance.
The next days pass similarly, you take Lady Aleyn for a stroll around the castle grounds and every once in a while you guide her to places where you know Lord Eden must be working. It serves you fairly well, you greet him as you would with any other person and he spares you a glance before resuming with his duties.
And then, the perfect opportunity to advance your conquest presents itself.
You’re accompanied by the daughter and son of a visiting Lord and, as always, Lord Bailey told you to keep them entertained while he discusses important matters with their father. It used to anger you before, but now you see it as a way to endear yourself to the next Lords and Ladies of the Realm. It’s with them that you’ll have to deal with in the future, after all, not with the decaying corpses of their parents.
You've just gone through your usual encounter with Lord Eden, one that was by pure chance, when Tansy, the girl, comes closer to you with a mischievous look in her eyes that you have seen in other nobles when they want to gossip. You mimic it as well, encouraging her.
“That was the Hound, wasn’t it? I heard rumors about him, but he’s truly horrific in person,” she says a bit too loud, oblivious to how well sound travels within these hallways.
"Doesn't he scare you?" Her brother asks you, eager to join the conversation. “I don't understand how you can talk to him so freely.”
“I felt like I was going to faint by just looking at him!”
You suppress a smirk at their excellent timing, Lord Eden must still be close enough to hear this conversation.
"Of course he does, but...” you reply with practiced meekness, as if you were embarrassed to admit this. “I respect him for all he has accomplished by himself."
They stare at you incredulously and you wonder if he’s wearing the same expression as well. When was the last time someone paid him a true compliment? You can’t imagine Lord Bailey bathing him in praises after every job well done, you don’t believe he even gets treated well under your father’s command.
That would certainly make things easier for you.
“Are you… are you jesting with us?”
"I would not dare, my lord,” it won't do you any good to lie and, thankfully, there’s plenty to praise about the man. You continue with just the right amount of sympathy. “He was a peasant that gained his lordship through his skills in battle, and isn’t that worthy of admiration? It's a shame that no one recognizes him properly for it.”
After a brief moment, the surprise melts away from Tansy and leaves her full of compassion. As if you didn't know any better.
"You have a beautiful heart, don’t you?" She takes your hand. "Just be careful with him, men like the Hound aren't to be trusted."
And yet, men like him aren't the true snakes of the court. They may be dangerous pawns to move in a chessboard, but they won’t stab you in the back like the nobles are so fond of. You’re sure that Lord Eden would do it as he looks into your eyes.
"I will," you squeeze her hand and give her a soft smile. “Thank you, lady Tansy.”
“Oh, let’s forget the formalities,” she grins back at you, before looking at his brother. “She can call us by our names, right?”
Her brother agrees, clearly trying to please his sister. You let her change the conversation to lighter topics as your mind wanders to Lord Eden.
You’ve made your move and now, he must make his.
Tumblr media
The warmth of the afternoon seems to engulf the castle’s grounds, even in the gardens where tall and imposing trees shield you from the sunlight under their cold shade. All that you can see are large rows of white roses on your left and red ones on your right, it makes the garden into a maze where secrets can be shared. Maybe that’s why you like it.
The heat gives the air a heavy perfume of the flowers, making you feel as if you’re in a dream. However, your peaceful stroll quickly becomes a nightmare when a hand grabs your arm and you’re shoved against a tree.
There, in front of you, stands the Hound. You can nearly make out his eyes under the helmet, shining with an intensity that manages to freeze you under him. He doesn’t seem angry —and thank the Gods that he does not, you would break under his wraith even though you’re no stranger to taking a beating— but suspicious.
And yet, everything about him screams danger: the size of his body, the gleam of his sword under the sun, his helmet that looks like it’s going to come to life and bite your head off at any moment. He can’t kill you when Lord Bailey still has some use for you, but logic and reason mean nothing when you’re trapped between his body and the tree. It takes all of your willpower to not tremble in his presence, but he must see the fear in your eyes.
“My lord—”
“Spare me the pleasantries, girl. What do you want from me?” Lord Eden demands, sounding quite forceful but not mad.
It’s the first time you’ve heard his voice. You had thought it would be raspy from lack of use, but it makes sense that it’s not, warriors do scream and curse during battle, don’t they? You wonder for how many men his voice was the last thing they heard before they died.
Focus!
“My lord,” you begin again, thinking carefully about your next words. Playing stupid feels beneath you, but the need to determine how much he has already figured out is more important than your pride. “I... I don’t know what you’re referring to.”
“Stop being foolish,” he comes even closer, using his height to loom over you as much as it allows him to. You’re suddenly afraid that he’s going to break your neck, but you don’t quiver under him. “I’ve seen the way you look at me. I know you want something.”
You can’t find your voice fast enough, and he must have taken your silence for an answer because his eyes flash with anger as he grunts above you. “Or it was just pity?”
“No! Of course not!”
You’re quick to reassure him, the last thing you want is to provoke him and put yourself at a further disadvantage. Thankfully, it seems that your reply was enough for now. Relief —and you hate yourself for feeling that, he shouldn’t be able to scare you— flows through you as he calms down and suspicion overcomes his eyes once again. You need to regain control of the situation. Now.
“My father will send me away to marry soon,” he can’t be fooled with lies, but what about truths? “I’ll probably never return, and I wanted… I want to leave this place without regrets.”
“That doesn’t answer my question,” he looks at you more intensely than ever, as if he could crack your skull open with his gaze and search for lies straight from your brain.
“I just wanted to know you, Lord Eden,” you say with all the honesty that you can muster, “I apologize if I offended you, I didn’t know how to approach you.”
He pulls slightly away from you, as if your answer had caught him off guard. His eyes shine with something completely different this time, a tentative happiness that he’s quick to replace with doubt once he composes himself. It’s clear that he’s caught between his desire for companionship and the, frankly real, possibility of this being just a plot for using him.
You’re pleased to know he isn’t a fool, but you can’t let him leave until he stops seeing you as a threat or he’ll never let his guard down in your presence again. He could even tell Lord Bailey of this. And you can’t delude yourself into thinking that your father won’t be able to see right through your charade. He’ll notice exactly why you want to “know” his Hound.
“My father has forbidden me from getting close to you, so I never tried before,” you insist, the sadness in your voice sounding genuine even to your own ears. “But I don’t have anything to lose anymore. There’s nothing stopping me from trying now.”
Lord Eden shakes his head as if to clear his thoughts and, in a gamble that you’re willing to pay, you grab his wrist where the armor ends and the skin of his hand begins. The effect is immediate. He freezes under your palm as if you had stricken him. You fear that you have pushed him too far, but he only stands still.
You can feel the rapid beating of his heart under your fingertips, it makes you wonder when was the last time someone touched him without violence being involved. Maybe he has never known of anything else. It does make you feel bad for him, mostly because you also don’t know of tender touches, though you understand the logic behind it well enough to fake it.
“There’s nothing to know,” he snaps at you, but there is no real bite behind it. He yanks his hand out of your grasp and, after staring at you menacingly for a moment, walks away.
You see him holding the spot where you touched him before he disappears between the rose bushes.
You allow yourself to rest against the tree, catching your breath and letting your heart calm down. The encounter left you feeling drained, but elevated at the same time. It gave you the incredible satisfaction that comes with playing mind games with someone like him, someone intelligent, dangerous.
You knew from the beginning that gaining his trust would be difficult, maybe even impossible considering that he works under a snake like your father. But you weren’t wrong about his desires.
He didn’t mean to show you that moment of vulnerability, but you did see it and now it’s clear that Lord Eden is helpless and ripe for the taking. All you'll need is a kind and patient hand to tame him.
You can’t help but grin at the thought.
