Emily Dickinson takes a carriage ride with Death. A couple are invited over to a neighbor's daughter's exorcism. A country witch with a sea-captain's head in a glass globe intercedes on behalf of abused and abandoned children. In July of 1915, in Hardin County, Ohio, a boy sees ghosts. Explore contemporary natural history in a baker's dozen of exhilarating visions. Praise for Jeffrey Ford: "Outstanding. . . . Ford uses . . . incongruously lyrical phrases to infuse the everyday with a nebulous magic."Publishers Weekly, Best Books of the Year(Starred Review) "For lovers of the weird and fantastic and lovers of great writing, this is a treasure trove of disturbing visions, new worlds and fully realized craft."Shelf Awareness (Starred Review) "Properly creepy, but from time to time deliciously funny and heart-breakingly poignant, too."Kirkus Reviews (Starred Review) Jeffrey Ford was born on Long Island in New York State in 1955 and grew up in the town of West Islip. He studied fiction writing with John Gardner at S.U.N.Y. Binghamton. He's been a college English teacher of writing and literature for thirty years. He is the author of eight novels including The Girl in the Glass and four short story collections. He has received the World Fantasy, Nebula, Edgar, and Shirley Jackson awards. The suspect who was arrested on Long Island in connection with a long-unsolved string of killings, known as the Gilgo Beach murders, has been confirmed as Rex Heuermann, according to four senior law enforcement officials briefed on the case.
Suffolk County police, sheriffs and New York State Police gathered outside Heuermann's home all Friday morning. He is expected to be in court later in the day and Suffolk County prosecutors are expected to provide more details on the arrest and the suspect in a Friday afternoon news conference.
Police and other agencies were seen searching the Massapequa Park home of the suspect. They were looking to see if any evidence inside might link Heuermann to the killings.
Not much is yet known about Heuermann but one neighbor who spoke to NBC New York said was born and raised on Long Island and has lived in the Massapequa area his entire life.
Since human remains were found along Gilgo Beach more than a decade ago, the case has drawn immense public attention for many years. The unsolved killings gained even more national interest when they became the subject of the 2020 Netflix film “Lost Girls.”
The deaths of 11 people whose remains were found in 2010 and 2011 have long stumped investigators. Most of the victims were young women who had been sex workers. Several of the bodies were found near the town of Gilgo Beach.
Determining who killed them, and why, has vexed a slew of seasoned homicide detectives through several changes in police leadership. Last year, an interagency task force was formed with investigators from the FBI, as well as state and local police departments, aimed at solving the case.
The formation of the Gilgo Beach task force represents a renewed commitment to investigating the unsolved killings of mostly young women whose skeletal remains were found along a highway on Long Island, Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison said.
“We’re happy to see that they’re finally active, the police, in accomplishing something. Let’s wait and see what it all leads to,” said John Ray, the attorney for the families of two victims, Shannan Gilbert and Jessica Taylor.
In talking about the bodies near Gilgo Beach, investigators have said several times over the years that it is unlikely one person killed all the victims.
News of a suspect being taken into custody comes a day after state police responded to a report of skeletal remains found in a wooded area off the Southern State Parkway in Islip. Police planned a briefing near the site on Friday afternoon. It wasn’t immediately clear if those remains were linked to the Gilgo Beach case.

Kathleen M. Gorman
Together, we celebrate the life of Kathy Gorman, who passed away peacefully in her sleep on November 24th, 2024. Born on August 26, 1943, she was the second child of John and Sara Gorman’s nine children.
Kathy was born in Kingston, PA and moved to Forty Fort at the age of eight. She attended Forty Fort schools. In high school, she enjoyed participating as a majorette in the Forty Fort High School Marching Band. Kathy was an outstanding swimmer actively involved in the sport of water ballet and synchronized swimming. Throughout high school and college, she worked at the International Color Printing Company alongside many family members, helping print what we all loved and called the “comics”.
Kathy attended Misericordia College and graduated with her degree in Secretarial Science. She moved to West Islip, Long Island, New York and began her teaching career at Lindenhurst Public School, Lindenhurst, NY. She spent the next twenty-eight years at Deer Park High School in Deer Park, NY as a teacher. She also served as chairman of the business department at Deer Park. She continued her education and received her master’s degree in secondary education from Hofstra University and then a professional diploma in Educational Administration from Long Island University. Kathy retired from teaching and moved to Ormond Beach, Florida and chose to resume her career in teaching at St. Brendan Catholic School in Ormond Beach. Her dedication as a teacher enlightened young minds, and Kathy devoted her life to shaping these minds with wisdom, kindness and passion. We honor her legacy for her devotion to education.
Kathy earned respect from her students, and they knew that everything she did for them was in their best interests. Many of us have had a teacher that stands out in our lives. We believe Kathy was that teacher.
Kathy brought joy and laughter into all of our lives. Her love for entertaining, and her love for crocheting brought happiness to many. It was a joy for her to show off the gift of her hand-made afghans that were given to many family members and friends. Her love of and her ability to pull off an impromptu party was amazing! She had a knack for calling you and inviting you for a bite to eat. There was always the infamous pot of chili, famous chicken rice soup, and Sara Gorman’s recipe and brother Tom’s favorite - ham, waxed beans and potatoes - simmering on the stove. She loved big gatherings of her friends while living in Florida and could plan a major celebration with only a day or two’s notice. Her most notorious event was on Easter Sunday. Kathy planned one of her usual gatherings with mounds of food she prepared. There were unseen circumstances causing cancellations. Kathy, not wanting to waste the effort put into this wonderful meal, she packed everything into the trunk of her car and drove to the local fire department. The squad had a delicious feast! What better way to celebrate! The “guys” even asked for one of her recipes. Hooray for Kathy for making what could have been an unfortunate ending into a day of celebration for all.
Kathy delighted in the videos of her grandchildren, Mady and Jack, and hearing about their many awards and adventures. She looked forward to her children and grandchildren’s visits to Florida and enjoyed vacations and sharing time with them.
This past year, Kathy made the decision to move back to Forty Fort to be closer to her family and friends on Myers Street with her two brothers just down the road. Everyone hoped we could petition the town fathers and re-name it Gorman Lane.
Kathy is survived by her daughter Suzanne Gollhofer and Carlos, her son Rob Gollhofer and wife Leslie, grandchildren Jack and Mady, brothers and sisters – Judy LoTruglio (Peter), Mariel Batjiaka (Paul), Tom Gorman (Mary), Susan Quigley (Bob), Beth Harkins (Jim), Joan McCue (Jack), Margaret Weber (Jim), John Gorman (Susan), many nieces, nephews and so many more extended family including all of her canine friends from the neighborhood that she so enjoyed. We also would like to acknowledge her special Florida friend, Scott Botka, who always offered a helping hand and friendship.
Family and friends are invited on Thursday, December 5th from 4 to 7 PM at Hugh B. Hughes & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 1044 Wyoming Ave., Forty Fort.
Funeral will be held on Friday, December 6th at 10:30 AM at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 116 Hughes St., Swoyersville. Family and friends are asked to go directly to the Church.
If you would like, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Blue Chip Farm Animal Rescue, Dallas, PA (https://bcfanimalrefuge.org/donate/); 974 Lockville Rd., Dallas, PA 18612.

Morning. Excitement alredy. Santos, the truth challenged congressman from Long Island, is indicted. Is swamped by reporters out in Islip, Long Island. Stealing a line from the Trump playbook, he says the whole thing is a witch hunt. Says the Bidens have done far worse things. Gets booed when he says this. He's trapped. Refuses to resign. (Good news for the House. Despite the embarrassment, they need his vote.) Says he still intends to run for reelection. (I learn later that his bail, 50 thousand dollars, was raised through three anonymous sources.) Poor fellow. Too many lies.
Beautiful day and the urge to walk. Somewhat successful in this. Errands and such. Trying to walk a lot. Very nice weather.
Mendacity seems to be the order of day. The seemingly enraged Santos (though his guilt is so evident) is followed by, in the evening something called a Town Hall Meeting in New Hampshire featuring Trump, who lies for a straight seventy minutes. His show. Gets a few laughs from his followers, especially when he is poking fun at E Jean Carroll (standing ovation) and how it is impossible to get a fair trial in New York. What rubes. (We are all a bit surprised that CNN aired this spectacle. Trump hates CNN. "Fake news" accusations and all that. If air time was going to be wasted on this it should have been on Fox.)
to be continued

What’s Going On with ERAP? - Ronald D. Weiss, P.C.
What’s Going On with ERAP?
If you live in New York, and are either a landlord or a tenant, you may still be waiting to hear about your ERAP application. Here are some things you’ll need to know.
A Quick ERAP Refresher
The Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) is a New York State program to help tenants and landlords with missed rent payments due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Eligible tenants who are approved can receive up to 12 months of back rent for missing payments on or after March 13, 2020. ERAP applications can be filled out by either a tenant or their landlord. All funds from an approved application will be sent directly to the landlord.
Can You Still Apply?
As of March 31, 2022 funding in New York State has been exhausted. However, residents in most towns in New York can still apply through the OTDA portal, as new moneys may become available by the time their application is processed. The exceptions are the towns that funded their programs locally, which includes the towns of Hempstead and Oyster Bay in Nassau County (which are no longer accepting applications), and Islip in Suffolk County, where funding is still available.
If You’ve Applied and are Still Waiting
As of May 24, 2022 – 333,724 people have applied to the program and only 156,415 applications have been processed so far (the state is currently working on applications received before December 31, 2021). So, depending on when you applied for the program you may have a long wait to hear back.
What Rules Do Landlords Need to Follow with ERAP
You cannot start the eviction process due to non-payment of rent if your tenant has an ERAP application pending.
Once you receive an ERAP payment, you must waive any late fees for the time period covered by the payment.
You cannot raise your tenant’s rent for one year after receiving payment.
If your tenant’s lease is expiring, you cannot evict them for one year after receiving payment UNLESS the dwelling contains four or fewer apartments and you or your immediate family will be moving in and using it as a primary residence.
If you feel your tenant is using ERAP as an excuse not to pay their rent, you can report ERAP fraud here.
What Tenants Need to Know
ERAP only protects tenants who endured economic hardship due to the pandemic. If you were behind on your rent BEFORE the pandemic, ERAP will not cover those back payments, and you are still legally required to pay them.
ERAP payments apply to up to 12 months of missed rent payment (starting March 13, 2020) and no more than three months of “future” payments. Once your landlord receives these payments, you are legally responsible to pay any rent bills going forward.
Eviction protections for tenants only cover missing or late rent payments. You can still be legally evicted if you have broken other terms of your lease, or you are behaving in a destructive or dangerous manner.
ERAP protection is only for people below a certain median income. If you are currently able to pay your rent in a timely manner, will be denied any protection under ERAP.
How a Good Landlord/Tenant Lawyer Can Help
This is a frustrating time for both landlords and tenants. Information is coming from multiple sources that tend to contradict each other. ERAP is taking far longer to process applications than expected and the program keeps running out of money.
The other challenge is the statute itself. It was drafted under emergency conditions and was meant to keep people from becoming homeless during a dangerous pandemic. However, the speed at which the statute was passed left several legal questions.
For example, a number of judges are concerned about the constitutionality of ERAP, feeling that it denies landlords “due process” (the right to challenge something through the court of law). The wording in the ERAP statute can lead to a messy situation where different judges have different approaches when it comes to a landlord/tenant dispute.
In the case of Harbor Tech LLC v Correa, a Brooklyn judge decided against a landlord who challenged that the ERAP statute was against landlords, stating that the landlord would also be benefiting from the program once the funds came in.
In the case of Carousel Props. v. Valle, a Suffolk County judge refused a landlord’s request to dissolve the ERAP stay. The landlord didn’t want the ERAP money, he just wanted to move into the property himself. The judge noted that while the statute did allow for evictions to allow reclaiming property for personal use, it was only allowed AFTER the ERAP application was processed.
On the flip side, in Abuelafiya v. Orena, a Queens judge sided with the landlord, when the tenant could not prove that they had filed a COVID-19 Hardship Declaration before the eviction notice was delivered, missed multiple court dates, and owned another home that they could move to.
Also in Queens, in Karan Realty Assocs. LLC v. Perez, the Housing Court agreed that an ERAP stay could be dissolved if the tenant had not completed the ERAP application knowing that they were not eligible for the program.
What to Do Next
If you are still waiting to hear if your ERAP application has been approved and your landlord/tenant relationship has seriously deteriorated, having the advice of the rightlandlord/tenant attorney can help diffuse the situation. Reach out to New York landlord/tenant attorney Ronald D. Weiss, P.C. for a free consultation. He can tell you what you need to know about the New York ERAP process, and, if you have a valid legal claim, help you get your case started. Call 631-271-3737 and take the first step to a fresh start.
