Disability Services NewCastle
Disability services NewCastle provides a range of support to people with a disability. The service helps clients to get their lives on track.
One of the largest remaining state-run disability centres, Stockton Centre in Newcastle, is set to close next year. As part of the NDIS, this facility will be shifted to a voucher-based disability market.
Supported Living
Supported living services are designed to enable people with disabilities or mental health issues to live independently, as far as possible. They can include supported housing and sheltered accommodation.
The key is to ensure that your loved one has a place of their own where they can receive the right level of support and care. The best places will offer their residents a safe environment, and provide them with a sense of community.
Assisted living is a form of residential care in which people with learning disabilities or autism live in apartments with other people with similar needs. They have their own tenancy agreement and usually pay for their rent as well as the cost of the support they get from the home.
Assisted living homes are an important alternative to residential care for people with learning disabilities or autism and they often help to increase their independence. They also give people with learning disabilities a place where they can meet other like-minded individuals and socialize.
Supported Employment
Supported employment helps people 17 and older with mental illness, intellectual or developmental disabilities, and traumatic brain injury find jobs that pay competitive wages. Unlike traditional vocational rehabilitation, which provides job skills training, supported employment services individualize their services to fit the needs of each person.
The supported employment planning process is a team effort between the individual, their family members, school personnel, adult service providers, and other community resources. A qualified vocational rehabilitation counselor can assist the individual and their team in a plan for supported employment.
Once the plan is developed, a community-based service provider is selected to provide the actual supported employment services. The provider may offer vocational assessment, job placement, and on-the-job training.
The goal of supported employment is to put individuals with severe disabilities in competitive integrated jobs, where they work with other people in the community. This approach has been studied and validated by several universities and medical centers.
Community Participation
Community participation helps people with disabilities to interact with their friends and family, while also enabling them to contribute to their communities. These social activities can help them develop positive relationships with others, build self-esteem, and reduce the need for long-term care and support.
Participation also encourages people to work together to address problems that affect their community and create a better understanding of what issues are most important to them. This means that government officials are able to more effectively allocate resources to improve the lives of those in need.
Social Activities
As well as delivering support services, disability services NewCastle also offers a number of social activities. These can range from the simple, such as going out for a coffee or meeting up with friends, to more complex activities.
These may be as simple as attending a museum or shopping centre at a slower pace with fewer people around, or they might include a variety of different sensory activities including art, music and beekeeping workshops. These activities may not only increase your social network and improve your wellbeing but also allow you to be part of something bigger than yourself, such as a community bakery.
The best way to find these activities is by checking the listings in your local council’s directory. This will help you find activities suited to your needs and interests, in line with the NDIS principles.

The Post Covid World: An Optimistic Outlook
There is no doubt that the Coronavirus epidemic is going to do lasting damage to our towns and cities - particularly our small towns. I've vowed somewhat not to cover anything negative in this blog, but Covid is something that's not going to hide away.
However, I firmly believe that Wolverhampton, and quite possibly only Wolverhampton, is poised to reap benefits from the crisis.
Please note, I do not in any way intend to downplay the ongoing pandemic, it's effect on people, lives and livelihoods. This is a very cherrypicked and glass-half-full post.
My reasoning?
The damage was already done and recovered from.
I'll try and explain my position.
Cinema
We had already lost the last multiplex cinema. Indeed the only screen in Wolverhampton is the Lighthouse arts centre - which while great, is a different kind of proposal to the other cinemas the city once had. When people flock back to cinema - and they will, even if it is a few years down the line out of nostalgia like the Vinyl boom - there are several proposals ready to go.
Tumblr media
There have actually been three proposals for cinemas in recent years - the above at the Wulfrun Centre, Westside Odeon multiplex, and Network House (which is now going to be housing). This shows the appetite in the city.
So we haven't lost any cinemas - but we are well set up to gain some in the impending building boom, government funded recovery or otherwise.
Bars and Restaurants
Wolverhampton doesn't have any chain restaurants - except for Nando's and pubs. Therefore when they all collapsed we did not lose out like a lot of City centres that are now fighting to retain the few they've got.
As these chains bite the dust, I believe a power vacuum is going to be created amongst hospitality, and some big new chains will set up. We saw this with the loss of Berni Inn, Wimpy, Little Chef, and so on.
We actually have some big schemes that can come in the future to provide for the flavours the city is lacking - big risers such as "street food", Mexican, Japanese and asian fusion. Several big American chains are expanding, and Canadian chain Tim Horton's have just set up their national headquarters in Wednesfield!
Tumblr media
Wednesfield has lost out - Bella Italia collapsed and Chiqhuito closed down - but Pizza Hut which similarly closed was swiftly taken up by the aforementioned Tim Horton's. This shows their faith in Wednesfield. There are many chains that could open up in Wednesfield once we're all back to normal.
Retail
We're on a theme here - the damage has already been done and Wolverhampton has either already recovered from it or is in the process of doing so.
Look at the big chains we've just seen collapse:
- Debenhams: already closed before the announcement, and has been filled
- Arcadia: already closed their last store, which has been filled
Tumblr media
- Next: had already planned to close, and have already finished building the large replacement store at St John's across the Ring Road
- BHS: unlike many cities ours has been taken on
- Waitrose: our store has already been taken by a new tennant (Tesco)
- Paperchase: our stores had already closed
A huge amount of chains such as Victoria Secret, Quiz, Monsoon, Oasis, Warehouse, Laura Ashley, Hawkin's, Mothercare, and so many more, were not present in the City Centre. We have dodged a bullet that may well kill off a lot of local centres.
We can focus on consolidating and refurbishing what we've already got, as well as, like with hospitality, welcoming the chains that open up in the national power vacuum - we have some ideal locations.
Music
Tumblr media
Our figurehead music venue was already closed for redevelopment. The hit our economy took as a result is only the same as that experienced by our neighbours, so despite having a world class venue off the back of this extensive refurbishment, we have not lost out in the long run.
How do we move onwards?
The solution that a majority of towns and cities our size have taken is to buy up old shopping centres and redevelop them. There are countless schemes - Ashford, Basildon, Gravesend, Maidenhead, Oxford, etc, that have replaced retail with living space and mixed uses.
In Stockton-on-Tees, the centre is actually being replaced with an enormous central park. I am strongly leaning towards a mix of the two. Demolish the entire Wulfrun Centre, consolidating the few shops remaining into Dudley Street, Victoria Street and the Mander Centre. In its place, a classy row of Georgian style townhouses or flats, masking the revealed edge of the Bell Street side of the Mander Centre. In front, a large, rectangular central park.
Tumblr media
Stockton-on-Tees, where a 60s shopping mall is to be replaced with a central park
I suppose, in a rather grim way, my analysis is that Wolverhampton has been so catastrophically devastated over the past decade that Corona Virus has barely touched the viability of the City Centre - and that we are therefore well poised to reap the benefits of the economic recovery to follow.

Drawing your attention to these, here are some of the most common stereotypes that there are in this world. These deal with people and cultures, with sexes and communities. A park in place of the high street: Could going green revive Britain’s flagging town and city centres?
A park in place of the high street: Could going green revive Britain’s flagging town and city centres?
It is a transformation which will make the northeast town of Stockton-on-Tees almost unrecognisable – and which may, advocates say, signal a new future for British towns and cities. Next year, the sprawling Castlegate shopping centre, which has dominated the high street here for half a century, will be demolished and replaced with a vast public park three times the size of Trafalgar Square. CANTLON: PLAYERS AND COACHES ARE ON THE MOVE
Tumblr media
BY: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - It's the time of year that moving companies love when it comes to the hockey industry. Coaches and players are both moving all over the place. Ex-Hartford Wolf Pack/New York Ranger Sylvain Lefebvre. After being hired as an assistant coach for the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets, he leaves the San Diego Gulls. Lefebvre is the second assistant coach to leave former Hartford Whalers' great, Kevin Dineen’s staff. Ex-Pack, David Urquhart, returned to Montreal to be the head coach at McGill University (OUAAA). Alex Tanguay, an Iowa Wild assistant coach signs with the Detroit Red Wings.
KRAKEN AND CHECKERS WORKING TOGETHER
The expansion Seattle Kraken announced they would have a dual affiliation arrangement with the Charlotte Checkers for their first season in 2021-22 while building a new facility in Palm Springs that's currently under construction. The irony is that current Seattle General Manager and Whaler great, Ron Francis, had a six-year relationship with Charlotte while he was with the Carolina Hurricanes. The Checkers were the Hurricane's AHL affiliates up until last season. They and are now in Chicago with the Wolves. The Kraken will likely send 8 players, but that number could climb to as many as 12 players to the Checkers. Francis has been operating at his North Carolina home since the COVID pandemic started. The team will supply the Checkers with an assistant coach who will likely become the first head coach of the Kraken's Palm Springs (CA) affiliate when they come on board in their brand new 10,000 seat arena in 2022-23. It will be the second straight year that the Florida Panthers will have a dual affiliation. Last season the defending Stanley Cup champions and current finalist, Tampa Bay Lightning, shared the Syracuse Crunch.
NHL DRAFT
The Seattle Expansion Draft is set for Wednesday, July 21 at 8 pm and broadcast on ESPN2 in Seattle. The entire NHL Draft is held and broadcast over two days, with the first round covered across the US by NBCSN. For the second year in a row, the draft will be done remotely. On Saturday, the NHL Network will broadcast rounds 2-7. NBCSN is going to be closing shop soon. The draft broadcast team will be composed of members of their staff and ESPN/Turner Sports, where hockey coverage is going to be moving forward, as well as TSN in Canada talent.
KARMANOS NO LONGER AN NHL OWNER
The NHL announced Carolina Hurricanes majority owner Tom Dundon completed his acquisition of the remaining minority ownership stake of Peter Karmanos. As a result, Dundon is now the sole owner of the team. The transaction formally ends Karmanos' relationship with the Carolina Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers that began in 1994.
AHL NEWS
The AHL Board Of Governors (BOG) approved and announced the sale of the Rockford IceHogs to the Chicago Blackhawks. Read more about that HERE. The AHL BOG then announced that the City of Abbotsford and the Vancouver Canucks had finalized the lease for the AHL team and that the Aquillini Investment Group (AIG) arena management portion of the deal. AIG is the parent company of the Vancouver Canucks. The Abbotsford Centre is a multi-purpose entertainment and sports facility. Aquilini Investment Group will manage staffing, event bookings, ticketing, and food and beverage management.  More on that deal HERE. Revenue sharing is also included in the contract. The city benefits from enhanced financial gains by sharing profits if there are an average of 5,000 tickets sold per regular season game.
MOVEMENT
Ex-Pack Brian Gibbons (Salisbury Prep) leaves Lausanne HC (Switzerland-LNA) to play for Linköping HC (Sweden-SHL) next season. Adam Musil, the nephew of former Whaler and Ranger Bobby Holik, switches teams in the Czech Republic, going from HC Liberec to HC Dynamo Pardubice. Ex-Bridgeport Sound Tiger (now Islanders) goalie Kevin Poulin leaves IF Bjorkloven (Sweden-Allsvenskan) and signs a one-year AHL deal with the Laval Rocket. The UCONN Huskies will be getting defensive depth next season in Jarrod Gourley, a grad transfer defenseman from NCAA Divison-1 independent Arizona State University (ASU). He is the 51st NCAA grad transfer in the hectic college hockey off-season that has seen 108 players switch schools via school or grad transfers. Gourley is a left-handed shooter who hails from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He will be in Storrs in a few months. The 22-year-old is undrafted, and his younger brother, Connor Gourley, is currently playing with Camrose (AJHL) and will be at ASU next year. Quinnipiac University (ECACHL) added veteran coach Mike Corbett as the new assistant coach for the Bobcats. Corbett coached Alabama-Huntsville (WCHA) for the last seven years.
GUITE AND OTHER MOVES
Ex-Sound Tiger Ben Guité, who has been with his alma mater an assistant and associate head coach with the Maine Black Bears (HE) for eight years, did not have his contract renewed. Guite was named the interim head coach in May after the sudden passing of one-time Yale assistant Dennis “Red” Gendron. UMASS assistant coach Bill Barr was hired in early June as the new head coach. Sadly, the WCHA Men's Hockey conference is shutting down after 70 years. They lost seven schools to the new CCHA and saw the University of Alabama-Huntsville and the University of Alaska-Anchorage went dark this year. The University of Alaska-Fairbanks will play as a Division-1 independent next season. It's possible that in the next couple of years that the WCHA will return as a true Western-based US college conference. The WCHA women’s conference will continue as is.
PLAYERS CALLING MOVING VANS
Nic Pierog (Canterbury Prep/Sound Tigers) leaves the Indy Fuel (ECHL) and signs with HKM Zloven (Slovakia-SLEL) for next season. Leaving HKM, the defending Slovak league champion is ex-Pack, Allan MacPherson who departs for HC Kosice (Slovakia). Ex-Sound Tiger, Jesse Graham, leaves KalPa Kuopio (Finland-FEL) and signs with Augsburger (Germany-DEL). On his new team and also switching clubs is Marek Bartunas. He is the cousin to Matej Baca, the nephew of former Whaler Jergus Baca. The younger Baca is returning to HK 32 Liptovsky (Slovakia-SLEL) after being traded last year in mid-season. Ex-Sound Tiger Tomas Malec, who nears the end of his career at age 39, drops down from the Czech Elite League HC Brno to HC Brno-B (Division-3). Former UCONN Husky, Spencer Naas, departs Tranås AIF (Sweden HockeyEttan Division-1) for HC Amiens (France-FREL).
US WORLD JUNIOR TEAM NEWS
The 44-player tryout camp for the United States World Junior Team is set to play July 24-31 in the World Junior Summer Showcase at the USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan. Included on the roster for defense is Scott Morrow (Darien). He will head to the defending national champion, UMASS-Amherst (HE), in the fall. Morrow, has played for the Shattuck’s St. Mary’s program for the last three years. A WJC returnee from the Bronze medal-winning squad from last year is Jake Sanderson, the son of former Whaler great Geoff Sanderson. He skates for North Dakota (NCHC). Another returnee, but at forward, is Rangers draft pick Brett Berard of Providence College (HE). He is the son of former UCONN head coach David Berard, now the Director of Administration at PC. The elder Berard played as an undergrad, graduated from PC, and was an assistant coach for twelve years. He is no relation to former NHL’er Bryan Berard. There is also Matthew “Mackie” Samoskevitch (Newtown). He is heading to the University of Michigan (Big 10) in the fall and is NHL Draft eligible this year. Lastly, a sophomore from Quinnipiac University (ECACHL), Ty Smilanic, a draft pick of the Florida Panthers last year. The WJC tournament will run from December 26th through January 5th in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta, Canada. USA Hockey named its roster and coaches for 2021 Hlinka Cup in Breclav, Czech Republic, and Piestany, Slovakia. There is just one local name associated with the team, Assistant Coach Jared Walman, from Hamden, Connecticut.
CHL DRAFT NEWS
The 30th annual CHL (Canadian Hockey League) Import Draft that involves the three Canadian major junior leagues was held early this year. Normally it's held a week after the NHL Draft. 85 players were selected, including 52 forwards, 26 defensemen, and seven goalies were chosen by 57 teams compromised of the OHL, QMJHL, and the WHL. The top three countries to have players selected were Russia with 16, the Czech Republic with 15, and Belarus taking 11. Just two players had Connecticut connections. UCONN defenseman Yan Kuznetsov, who left school two years early after signing an entry-level deal with the Calgary Flames, played six games with the AHL Stockton Heat, who, because of Covid-19, played their games in Calgary last season. Kuznetsov was taken in the first round (22nd overall) by the QMJHL Saint John (NB) Sea Dogs. Kuznetsov is 6’4 and 225 lbs. He will not be turning 20-years-of-age until March 2022. He is still Russia WJC eligible, so he could wind up in the Q getting valuable playing minutes depending on the organizational depth in Stockton. 6' tall defenseman David Spacek is the other player selected with a connection to Connecticut. He was taken in the second round (67th overall), is a right-hander, and was selected by the QMJHL Sherbrooke Phoenix. Spacek 18, is the son of former Beast of New Haven defenseman Jaroslav Spacek. He played last year for HC Litomerice (Czech Republic Division-2). He is signed to play for HC Plzen (Pilsner) in the Czech U-20 league this year and is WJC eligible. His father is the national team assistant coach and is also an assistant with HC Plzen with the Czech Elite League (CEL) team. He could play in the Q get playing time like Kuznetsov, but the NHL Draft in three weeks will likely play a factor in where he goes if he is drafted. Youths take advantage of new e-scooter rules
They have been hailed as a solution to our gridlocked cities, but the UK’s first trial of electric scooters has got off to a farcical start, The Mail on Sunday can reveal.
Youths flouted the new laws within hours of the powerful machines arriving in Middlesbrough, leading critics to accuse them of being ‘open to abuse’.
Our reporter witnessed two masked youths brazenly whizz through the bustling Cleveland Centre indoor shopping mall, forcing pedestrians to jump out of the way.
Youths flouted the new laws within hours of the powerful machines arriving in Middlesbrough, leading crDitics to accuse them of being ‘open to abuse’
Our reporter witnessed two masked youths brazenly whizz through the bustling Cleveland Centre indoor shopping mall, forcing pedestrians to jump out of the way
It was just one of countless disturbing incidents, including scooters being ridden on pavements, without helmets, and at their top speed of 12.5mph. Two youngsters were captured riding pillion, others were seen attempting wheelies while Cleveland Police had to issue a warning after pulling over two boys, aged 13 and 14, on the busy A19 dual carriageway.
It raises serious questions about the scheme because the overwhelming majority of riders were teens and young men apparently seeking a joy ride rather than commuters trying an alternative means of transport.
Personal injury lawyer Peter Kelly said: ‘The scheme is open to abuse and that is demonstrated by what is happening.
‘The police should crack down on it as soon as possible. The initial rush of kids abusing the scheme is going to have to be stamped on.’
The Government’s pilot scheme in Middlesbrough means people can now legally rent and ride the e-scooters on roads with a maximum speed limit of 40mph and in cycle lanes in designated areas.
Only people over the age of 18 with a full or provisional driving licence are allowed to hire them and it is recommended that riders wear a helmet.
A fleet of 100 orange and black scooters arrived in the town last week for hire at £2 per 20 minutes – done via a phone app linked to the rider’s bank account. It is being run by start-up firm Ginger and users are covered by insurance company Zego in the event of an accident.
However, this newspaper has discovered that checks are apparently not being made to confirm users’ age or identity, opening it up to misuse, as children as young as 11 can get a bank account with a debit card.
Anyone found driving irresponsibly can have their licence endorsed, face a fine or criminal prosecution. Legal experts say that if a rider caused injury or damage, they would be exposed to offences comparative with a car user.
It is unclear what would happen if a rider is underage.
The introduction of e-scooters on to UK streets has been marred with controversy after the death of YouTube star Emily Hartridge while riding one in London a year ago. Paris has about 20,000 e-scooters available for hire but is facing lawsuits from accident victims.
Despite that, the Government brought forward the trial to capitalise on people’s changing habits during the Covid-19 pandemic. A further 400 machines are set to be delivered to Darlington, Stockton-on-Tees and Redcar, while 50 local authorities have expressed an interest, including Bath, Bristol, Derby, Nottingham, Southampton, Portsmouth and the City of London.
Last week, Future of Transport Minister Rachel Maclean told Parliament that it was ‘not a done deal’ that the e-scooters would stay after the 12-month trial ends. ‘This is a very big market for e-scooter operators and we don’t want to rush into something that we may regret doing later,’ she added.
Supporters of e-scooters say they are a clean and cost-effective way to get around, and Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen has thrown his weight behind the project.
He said: ‘The first week of the pilot has been a great success overall, and the response from people in Middlesbrough has been overwhelmingly positive’, adding that the Tees Valley Combined Authority was liaising closely with Cleveland Police. Ginger did not respond when asked how it would verify the age of scooter users, but in a statement released on Cleveland Police’s Facebook page, company chief executive Paul Hodgins said: ‘The guidelines for using the scooters are clear both prior to, and throughout, the hire of the scooters.
‘The trial is performing well and we will continue to work closely with all regional partners during this test phase to ensure riders are aware of their responsibilities to themselves and other road users.’

Most Romantic Town in Northern England
Tumblr media
Most Romantic Town in Northern England
If you are up for a tour in England, you will not come back disheartened. The rich culture and sophisticated lifestyle of the English people will definitely win your heart. The busy city life of London, Birmingham, and Cambridge will not obstruct your tour. The tall heritage buildings and museums from centuries ago are worth visiting. Most importantly how can you miss capturing a photograph of the Queen’s abode, The Buckingham Palace?  The royal heritage of England, which has witnessed the reign several Kings and Queens. Keeping aside the man-made architectures, England has abundance of natural beauty. The cities in Northern England such as Liverpool, Manchester, York, Leads, Chester speaks of both heritage and natural abundance. These cities are beautiful as well as romantic in a sense that you can spend quality time with your special one, wondering through the woods or having a coffee or viewing the sunset. Each city has its own essence and cannot be differentiated from the other. Yet to me personally, I find the town of Yarm to be beautiful, enchanting and most importantly romantic of all.
Location

Redundancy Diary Day 5
A busy day which began with a Universal Tax Credit meeting at the Job Centre Plus.  I’d hate to think what it was like before the plus was added.  The guy helping me was remarkably cheerful and helpful but essentially the 30 minutes I spent there were to laminate a seemingly pointless unique passcode to access an online system I already access using a unique username and password.  I’m back there on Friday for a “Commitment Meeting” to discuss my job search.  Painful.
Tumblr media
I then attended a medical appointment but only after a small diversion to Greggs where I bought a meat pie for my lunch.  I then remembered that I had been tasked with finding a new pair of running shoes for my mother-in-law to get me for Christmas.  I went in to JD Sports and took a bite of my pie - I was then asked by one of the 4 members of staff to leave due to their “no eating policy”.  I was the only customer in the shop.  Unemployment Level 2 unlocked!
Tumblr media
I then got a text telling me that I had succeeded in my previous interview and would be invited back to a second but not for “two to three weeks due to travel commitments of the management”.  Good news non-the-less.
Then back home to quickly change and off to a “coffee interview”.  This lasted 90 minutes and went really well and I am to be invited to a more formal interview in around a week.
With a slight spring in my step I then went to my local comic shop to pick up my overdue pull list which includes a lot of final issues including: -
The final 2 issues of DC’s Event Leviathan
The final issue of Image Comic’s post apocalyptic take on Oliver Twist
The 4th and final issue of Scrimshaw “Tears of the Sonoran Sea” from Alterna
And the final issue of “Thanos” a gripping 6 part story focussed on his relationship with Gamora.
Tumblr media
And the top the day off I went to watch Stockton Town FC comfortably beat West Auckland 3-0 on a bitterly cold night.  Probably should have been 5 or 6 but a good win and 2 hours of top notch banter including a “you had to be there” outburst of “ROBOT HOOKERS”

Friction Matches
The first ever Friction matches were invented by a chemist name of John Walker, who lived and worked in Stockton on Tees. He originally sold them named ‘congreves’ in reference to ‘Sir William Congreve’ in his honour.
The matchsticks exact composition were never disclosed and he never patented them so he never gained credit for his invention until after his death.

Below is a photo of the giant poster/artwork dedicated to the anniversary of John Walkers invention which is located on the side of the Stockton Shopping centre ‘Castlegate shopping centre’. Artwork was created by Sarah Pickering.
