Buy plan B and Ella (plan B for over 200lbs) before they’re taken off the market.
If possible, stockpile prescription medicine. Especially ones you take daily. There’s a few I have stockpiled just because I forgot to take them enough times it built up, but there’s some I can’t do that to without Issues, so do what you can, and if you trust your doctor communicate. This way you won’t be shit out of luck if the price rises beyond what you can afford.
Learn how to garden! You can grow things as long as you have a window or can afford a decent quality grow light. There are vegetables suited to small spaces, and if all you have is a window box, grow herbs! Ensure you have a source of food as health codes become less and less restrictive.
Related, but if you know of a patch of land that doesn’t use pesticides, learn to forage! Dandelion greens, and clover, are both very nutritious and good for beginners. I don’t have access to very much land, but I’m lucky in the fact I have access at all. But even just 20 square feet has yielded enough dandelion and violet greens for around 2 side dishes, more if you supplement with spinach or collard greens or something. Hell, if you have a community garden in your area, ask the owners of some of the plots if you can weed for them. As long as you have a discerning eye and/or stick to beginner foragables with no poisonous lookalikes, you’re golden.
Pick up an offline hobby. Arts, crafts, exercise… anything you can do to engage yourself outside of the online hellscape. I recently picked up crochet!
Make more plans with irl friends, if you have them. I’m working on setting up a potluck ramen bar with 3 of my IRLs, plus I’m fixing a book for one of my friend’s sisters, and I have plans to meet up at a local coffee shop and crochet together as we catch up! If your friends are open to it and if you don’t have sensory issues, hug them, lean on them, touch them. Human contact, physical contact, is important for keeping yourself happy and sane.
If you don’t have IRL friends, then set aside a time to hop on a voice call and do shit with your cameras on and shoot the breeze, or play a game together. Any game. My college friends are scattered all around the state right now, but we find time to play Stardew, or Minecraft, or risk of rain together and I love it. Human contact is important to keep your sanity!
everything is awful right now so im making a 4 year survival plan, put in the tags any ideas you have
my ideas so far:
trust self & focus on values
get new copies of govt. papers
medical history binder
avoid self censorship
get high quality masks
research where my data is being shared
care for body as if theres already no healthcare
buy condoms
make sure vaxxes are up to date
self defense classes
renew passport
reblogs for a bigger idea pool would be very appreciated
don't kill yrself im so serious that is exactly what the government wants you to do stay alive out of spite even if yr miserable (& you will be) (joy exists in and amongst grief)
#sorry for not putting in tags- I just had a lot of rambles. but here’s the cliffs notes!#stockpile plan B/Ella#stockpile your prescriptions if possible.#learn to garden#learn to forage#hang out with irl and online friends more#get some offline hobbies!

As a trans guy I'm really worried about maintaining access to T. I live in a safe state but I know how quickly things can change in a matter of months to years, so.. I'm worried. That being said, what do you know of DIY HRT? I know that cis guys sometimes use T and I doubt they always go through their doctor, so I'm curious how that works.
I don't want to have to do this, but I figured I should at least know the gist of it should I ever need to or if someone I know is in the same situation.
P.S thank you for being here for everyone who has questions. It means a lot 🩵
As a fellow trans guy, I feel you. Note that while the following looks like advice, it is for educational purposes only, and you are using this information at your own risk.
The following is listed from least to most illegal:
Probably your absolute best bet (especially if you pass) is to get a doctor that can prescribe T for male hypogonadism (low T). Now, this is probably not going to be an in-person doctor for two reasons. One is that they will probably do a testicular exam, which will give things away. Second, most electronic medical records link up these days, so any doctor treating you will be able to pull your medical records and find out you're trans.
One possible way around this is telehealth, which has boomed since the pandemic. Try googling "male hypogonadism telehealth" to check around for options. This will probably need to be paid out of pocket under a fake name if you want to ensure your account isn't linked. Make sure you know the symptoms of male hypogonadism, or come up with a story about how you're already diagnosed because you had mumps as a kid or something. Note that if they ask for a blood test, which they probably will, and you're not already out of T, skip your dose and take the test a few days later, so you test low. The nice thing about this is it gets you a diagnosis that can only be gotten if you're AMAB, so it lends credibility to your situation.
The next option is to stockpile some T while you still have access to it. Because T is controlled, the most T you can have in your possession is a 6-month prescription (otherwise you risk a 4th degree felony). However, if the prescription is written for 1-ml vials and your dose is 0.5ml/week and the prescription says to "discard vial after 1 dose" you can technically have up to a year (because in theory, you're throwing away 0.5ml of T each time you inject- but you could also, in theory, keep it and use it as long as you were careful to clean the top with alcohol before you puncture it). Keep in mind that even if you happen to get more T than a year's worth, it's only good for about 3 years before it starts losing potency or may become contaminated.
The (far) next option is to find someone in the bodybuilding community and start asking around. Making it clear that you know how to do injections will get you to people who have T that they don't want to self-inject but may trade you (or at least sell to you) for doing their injections. This is your best bet for finding illegal T. Note that T is a (pretty dang) controlled substance. You and everyone involved in getting T to you is at significant legal risk (that 4th degree felony again).
Unfortunately even looking in the dark recesses of reddit I was not able to find a safe "recipe" for testosterone. Most of what is suggested is to buy T powder from overseas and compound it yourself into a cream. This is very very illegal and could be very dangerous if you don't do it correctly. I'm not going to talk about it here because I don't understand it enough. Also it's really freaking illegal.
Note: If you haven't yet had a hysterectomy, I suggest you do everything in your power to keep a functioning ovary. That way if you do lose access to T, you won't lose bone density. If you have already gotten your ovaries removed, talk to a doctor about low-dose hormones to maintain bone density.

Obviously if MC had meds, that's a necessity to take with them. But what if MC had prescription meds they had to take every day? How would Kev still get them if they don't want anyone finding out he has MC?
Kevin is supposed to be taking a few medications so they have a stockpile of certain medications, If it's possible to get them himself, by seeing a doc and just saying the right keywords or having the right aliments, he'll do that, or pay someone lots of money to get him the medications/false documentation to get prescribed the medication, and if its something they can just grow, it'll get grown >:3
Kevin is also fucking stupid and would probably go into a pharmacy and fill out MCs remaining prescriptions before they realise how risky that was skdkdjdjs
If it was an emergency, he'd go straight to the pharmacy, shift into a dingo, break in, grab a bunch of meds, and get tf out of there- risky but anything for his MC :3 (later they make MC watch the news with them and point it out excitedly "LOOK IT'S ME SAVING YOUR LIFE MC!" Then Kev gets annoyed bc the crimes credits have gone to some local dog trainers, becuase everyone thinks he's a dog on the shitty cctv lol.)

Trans Preparedness
I'm probably not the right kind of blog to be doing this, but I go a little crazy not having a plan. A friend set up a threat model and practical steps that can be made to prepare for it. If this kind of disaster preparedness might be too much for you do not force yourself to read through this. Keeping calm and healthy is paramount above all of this.
Legal documents
Ban on legal document changes, reversion of previous changes and invalidation of updated documents. This means potentially being outed any time you present your ID. If you do update your documents, this may make it impossible to cross the border and any other checkpoints (legal or extralegal), as your documents could be invalidated. Possible criminal fraud penalty, like in florida, making the continued use of an invalidated ID risky. Risk of revocation of all legal recognition of non-binary gender.
What you can do to prepare: Consider whether it would be best to have your legal documents match your true gender or your agab. If you can’t reliably pass as your true gender, it may be prudent to have your documents reflect your agab, in the event you need to go through a document checkpoint without arousing suspicion. Also, consider that, by changing your documents, you may end up “on a list”.
Anti-trans discrimination
Rollback of anti-discrimination protections in employment, healthcare, and harassment/hate crimes.
What you can do to prepare: If you work at a corporation/franchise/small business with republican ownership or coworkers, consider updating your résumé and looking for new employment. If you do land a new job, think carefully about whether to present as your true gender or your agab while at work. Be extra cautious about coming out at your job — only do so if you can’t reliably pass as either your true gender or your agab.
If possible, save money. Pick up extra shifts. Cut back on discretionary purchases. Cancel unnecessary subscriptions. Meal prep. Organize bulk purchases with your community to share costs and get better prices. Visit your local food pantry instead of the grocery store. Etc.
One possible safeguard against healthcare discrimination is to have your medical records updated to reflect a diagnosis of intersex, rather than transgender, if possible. I’m not privy to the details, but my understanding is that there are certain diagnostic codes, genetic tests, etc that can be used to mask your transgender status while maintaining access to the same treatments.
Healthcare restrictions
Introduction of insurmountable liability for healthcare providers and expansion of malpractice definition/enforcement to make providing trans healthcare impossible. Possible criminalization of doctors prescribing HRT. Possible criminalization of HRT possession/use. It will become impossible to access HRT, except through DIY. Possible discrepancies in enforcement between states, with red states imposing “bounty hunter laws” that allow anyone to sue a person who has taken HRT.
What you can do to prepare: If you have a legal prescription for your HRT, ask your provider for a 90-day prescription. Fill it as soon as possible, and refill it once before inauguration day. Consider rationing to extend your supply.
Start thinking about what you’ll do when your stockpile runs out. Look into DIY method of HRT. Plan how you can share the cost of supplies among your community to build a larger stockpile.
Bathroom bans
National bathroom ban with possible deputized citizenry/tiplines. Could be fines or criminal penalties (jail). Either way, this makes it near impossible to go out in public, even in blue areas, because all it takes is one transphobe to turn your life upside down. This applies whether you’re in the restroom for your true gender or your agab, since we can’t count on transphobes to be consistent with enforcement (i.e. you look visibly queer so someone calls the cops on you, even though you’re in the restroom of your agab).
What you can do to prepare: Consult the Refuge Bathrooms directory to find single-occupant restrooms near you. Also submit any single-occupant restrooms you come across to the Refuge Bathrooms directory to help out others in the future. If you need to go into a gender-segregated multi-occupant restroom, try to go with a buddy or in a group for safety. Choose which restroom to use based on your outward appearance, not your internal gender.
Drag bans
May define transgender people doing any form of performance as drag, including public speaking at an event or protest, or performing live music in a venue or on the street. Possible definition of transgender people merely existing as “sexually explicit drag” in many circumstances. Possible classification of transgender people as sex offenders under this premise. May bar trans people under threat of criminal penalty from entering government buildings, airports, and schools while dressed in accordance with their gender.
What you can do to prepare: If you’re comfortable and capable of doing so, work on “passing“ as your true gender through voice training, clothing choices, hair style, and makeup. If you can’t reliably pass as your true gender, consider wearing less attention-grabbing, looser-fit, gender-neutral clothing and finding other ways to express your gender. Even if you’re wearing more body-conforming clothes, consider carrying a baggy sweatshirt or jacket to conceal your secondary sex characteristics in an emergency. Consider assembling a set of clothes associated with your agab, as well as any accessories such as a binder or packer, in case you need to “stealth” as your agab.
Additional notes
Update your passport, ID, and vaccinations. Drink water. Hug your friends. We get through this together.

4 & 19 for xinya and yvonne? then 19 & 20 for you! :D
for mEEEeee :3cc plus the correction!!
4. Is your oc's environment supportive about their identity? How does this impact them?
Xinya's identity in my mind is "some sort of sapphic" and maaaaybe demi-romantic? Haven't fully figured it out yet, but she's definitely sapphic In Some Way.
Overall, that's fine. It would be more noteworthy for her to marry a commoner than it would be for her to marry a woman. The craziest part of Yu-Qi's existence is that She's Uh A God-Dragon, despite Xinya trying to keep that as much of a secret as possible (Yu-Qi is not helping this cause).
I think if I do make her demi-romantic or on the aromantic spectrum in some way, that would be the most contentious part. Not only because Yu-Qi literally married her and is obsessed with her in a romantic way, and Xinya wouldn't really be able reciprocate until Yu-Qi gets her act together, but also because as a queen, she's expected to have an heir. Whether it's a biological child or a spouse or some other family member, she's culturally expected to have some kind of successor, especially because her mom is dead, her dad isn't able to rule, and she has no siblings. Being in her 30s and unmarried would definitely be something other nobles would side-eye, to her eternal frustration.
9. Are there cultural or lore specific aspects to their identity? If applicable, does their species affect it?
As a centaur, Yvonne lived almost her whole life in a herd of other centaurs in close proximity and in a semi-nomadic society. They were always moving between a few remote locations, sharing everything along the way, and only able to take with them what they could carry on their saddlebags. There's a huge emphasis on mutual aid and community support, including the support of trans centaurs along their transition journeys as best they can.
Yvonne's herd was super supportive of her being trans, but the way centaur herds live, she would have had to be okay with very limited access to Magic HRT—she would have had to carry around a stockpile of prescription pills/injections/etc., learn how to brew potions and constantly be on the hunt for ingredients, or have a wizard from her herd learn the ritual HRT spell for her (since she doesn't have magical ability of her own). Some centaurs live this way and are cool with it, but Yvonne elected to leave her herd and move to the city for more consistent care. She was sad to go, as was her herd—the only family and home she'd ever known—but everyone knew it was the best thing for her.
The Magic HRT does function a little differently than it does on humans, since she's going through Horse Changes along with her Human Changes, but there's not a ton that's like... physically different. She takes the Magic HRT and it Has Effects!
19. Do you have preferences about depicting homo/transphobia in your stories? What, and why? Does it vary by story?
It depends on the story. Since I write mostly fantasy, I like to craft worlds in which homo/transphobia don't really exist, and whatever setting the story takes place in has a more accepting and fluid perspective on gender and sexuality. It's just more fun for me to think about how a society so different from my own would function and also it lets me have a built-in excuse for making everyone some flavor of queer (not that I need one, but still)
In stories that are set in the real world like, Pride & Justice, I will like... allude to homo/transphobia, showcase it very briefly, or make a statement on it through symbolism, but I'm not super interested in writing a story that wholly focuses on it. If there is homo/transphobia, it's in service of creating stronger and more defiant queer joy.
20. Have your ocs helped you in self discovery? How?
Yes, absolutely. The best and most recent example is actually Pride, since I was developing him before I was on T, I was considering whether or not it was even worth it for me, I was nervous about such drastic changes, etc. etc. I was deep in the Gender Contemplation Sauce.
I gave him a lot of traits that I was nervous about happening to me if I went on T and then gave him a love interest who intentionally and deliberately likes all of those things, to like... practice enjoying it? Practice the idea of these things happening to me, but also to dip my toes into the idea that other people could like it too? I didn't realize what I was doing until much later, but I do think it was a genuinely huge help in coming to terms with the idea T would make me happy. And 2 months in, it is!
[send me a pride themed ask]

Couple things for Americans to consider for the future here. Do not panic. We have some months before anything starts happening in earnest, but start to think about being prepared.
Are you up to date on your vaccinations, including boosters like the latest covid shot? Consider getting any vaccines you need sooner rather than later. If Trump does in fact let Kennedy make a mess of our public healthcare system, it's possible that some vaccines could become harder or impossible to access. Not sure if you need a particular shot? Check with your doctor.
If you are someone who can become pregnant, consider buying emergency contraception to have on hand--Republicans have been wanting to make it difficult or impossible to acquire. You won't be able to stockpile a ton of it or anything since I believe the meds have an expiration date, but you may want to at least get one pack ahead of time. If you have health insurance you can probably get it cheaply or free. If you are uninsured you can get generics pretty cheaply and there are also coupons on GoodRx. You can get it without a prescription both in stores and online. Information from the Office of Women's Health can be found here. If you have any questions about whether this stuff is ok for you to use (it is a form of hormonal birth control), ask your doctor.

(sorry I initially deleted the ask) This is true these are the reasons. But the thing I've been comparing it to is a post advising people on how to commit mild prescription fraud in order to stockpile said schedule iii substance. which is also illegal. Since T expires, I must assume the purpose of the stockpile is to provide for other people, which is possession with intent to distribute, which is even more illegal! And since you obtained it through official channels, now has a paper trail! And because of your posting, maybe even a written confession!
Sometimes the more overtly illegal action is less likely to get you in legal trouble actually! If you commit a crime you should be aware that you are doing it and create as little evidence as possible are you kidding me.
point two is true and I guess its just about doing your research. I will say that the thing that kills people about steroids is typically the insane dosages and stacking several non-bioidentical anabolics rather than impurities.
im not advocating against getting a legal prescription lmao I was annoyed at one post.

huh. apparently without us talking, it looks like my gp has rewritten my prescription for one big vial with 'discard after 28 days' written on the rx label, as opposed to 4-6 smaller vials. ie very close to the advice going around on how to get insurance to let you stockpile as long as your pharmacy tech doesn't look twice at it or narc. so it's either that or my insurance is deciding to get pissy about what they'll cover, which is possible. i started to say it's weird because this is not exactly a big ticket item but it's not like prices actually matter in healthcare anyway and this is a scheduled substance so shit can get extra bizarre there. over the last 7 years or whatever the manufacturer changed once but it was still the same product. and for other drugs insurance can DEFINITELY decide shit like 'we'll cover this in 5mg pills but not 1mg, which is the dose you were prescribed, so enjoy trying to get the tiniest pills you've ever seen cut into quarters'
it's mildly annoying. multiple small vials mean i have to be less stressed about contamination and sanitary practices. so i look forward to squinting at it trying to figure out if this counts as 'cloudy'
working with the same vial multiple times also tends to get more bubbles in there but research suggests bubbles aren't actually an issue. you're not injecting into a vein and even if you were it apparently takes more than a tiny bubble in half an ml to kill you

Okay I'm gonna go ahead and throw this info out there because it might be a game changer for some of you
If you have a gp who is qualified/willing to prescribe testosterone for you, and you have the ability to pay an average of like $120 a year on T (which I know isn't possible for everyone)
Check out New Era Pharmacy
It sounded sketchy to me when I first heard of it because it sounds too easy, too good to be true, and so on, but they're legit. I've gotten my T from them twice now
They take prescriptions over the phone and ship your T to you anywhere in the US. They're based in Oregon.
They only offer 200mg strength. But this is perfectly safe to use just like 100mg strength. You just take half as much. One 10ml vial of this lasts me like 39 weeks, since I'm on .3 ml injections once a week. That means one vial last for just shy of 10 months.
Each 200mg/ml, 10ml vial costs $100.
You can, theoretically, stockpile if your doctor is willing to put a note on the prescription they send New Era. For me, I really needed a stockpile because I'm in the process of moving countries and HRT is not done the same in the new place and I do not have insurance there yet. I don't want to change my injection routine to something that's been outdated for decades (which is what's available there) and I won't be back in the US for probably at least a couple years. My doctor put down that I was traveling and prescribed me 3 vials. The person who I gave my payment info to did double check with their supervisor, but then filled it with no problem. I now have a 2.5 year supply of T.
I don't remember if they take any kind of insurance but I'm fairly certain I recall them not taking my medicaid, which is why I said fuck it and went out of pocket, because I ordered from them the first time when there was that huge shortage of 100mg T last November. Maybe medicaid in PA wasn't covering 200mg or something. If you're not sure about coverage, I encourage you to check their website or call them.
I hope this helps someone.
saw a tweet the other day that was like "outlawing diy hrt would kill trans people" which, yes, i agree. however it is already illegal for trans men. which is something i feel like people just ignore in discussions about diyhrt. i've also seen tweets along the lines of "it's easy to access and dose and it's not explicitly illegal so if you're concerned about us anti trans laws you're being stupid". which, the first part is completely untrue when it comes to testosterone, and the second part shows a mindblowingly uncompassionate view on anti trans legislation and is a genuinely bafflingly horrible thing to say to people who are scared for their lives and their futures

The Turmeric Benefits
Turmeric root offers numerous medical advantages, including its calming and cancer prevention agent properties. While turmeric root is a phenomenal expansion to numerous hand crafted dishes, it's not typically utilized as often as possible enough to utilize the whole root before it turns sour.
To get the most incentive for your dollar, you'll need to safeguard new turmeric root with the goal that you can involve it for quite a long time to come, as opposed to feel hurried to go through everything before it lapses.
What is turmeric? Turmeric is most popular for its profound yellow tone, the shade that recognizes numerous Indian dishes. It is most generally sold in powdered structure, yet as its prevalence builds, it is turning out to be more normal to see the root in supermarkets.
You've presumably even seen it yourself, however on the off chance that you haven't looked carefully, you'll have gotten it's ginger.

That orange variety stains anything that interacts with it immediately, so watch out.
Notwithstanding, it is definitely justified despite the gamble, on the grounds that as well as having an impactful, hearty, and somewhat unpleasant taste that adds profundity of flavor to exquisite dishes, it is likewise one of the most remarkable normal prescriptions in the world.

It is ideal to break or slice the roots into 1-to 2-inch pieces that you can use as a solitary serving. That way you don't need to take out the entire root to get what you really want and set the rest back in the cooler.
It is better that you possibly remove it from the cooler when you will utilize it, since it begins to quickly thaw out. On the off chance that you set it back in the cooler, the quality will be compromised.
Place the turmeric enclosed by kitchen paper in a cooler safe pack and press out however much air as could reasonably be expected. This will shield it from cooler harm.
Store it in the primary cabinet of your cooler, not on the entryway. Like we said, turmeric defrosts rapidly, so you don't need it presented to hot air each time you open the cooler entryway.
The most effective method to Freeze New Turmeric Root Freezing new turmeric root requires only a couple of additional means than typical ledge or cooler stockpiling and dramatically increases this strong root's life expectancy. Follow the means beneath, and you'll have turmeric all set for your next recipe.
1. Clean and Plan To begin with, you'll need to clean the roots persistently. You would rather not freeze them with any soil or microbes actually waiting on the skin. Clean the roots with a touch of produce wash and your fingertips or a scour brush. When the soil has lifted, put them on a cutting board.
Get dry each root with a paper towel to pull off any last pieces of soil and eliminate indications of dampness.
2. Cut Then, you'll need to prepare the roots for freezing by cutting them into little, sensible pieces. For best outcomes, hold back nothing two-inch pieces that are huge enough for a solitary part yet little enough that there won't be inefficient extras.
Chopping them down prior to freezing additionally disposes of additional prep when it comes time to utilize the root.
3. Wrap Presently, feel free to wrap every one of your pieces together in one dry paper towel. The paper towel will retain any additional dampness present on the roots or in the air, expanding its life in the refrigerator.
4. Contain Take your paper towel pocket and spot it into a cooler safe plastic pack, preferably with a zip-top. When the roots are taken care of, start pushing the air out of the pack. Gradually begin to zip the top, keeping the sack as airless as could really be expected.
Instructions to Store New Turmeric Root Assuming that you'd like to store new turmeric root beyond the cooler, you can store it in the ice chest or on the counter.
The capacity will be no different for one or the other technique. Chop the roots down to more modest pieces, envelop by a paper towel to retain overabundance dampness, place in a plastic compartment for sometime in the future.
Putting your root in the refrigerator or on the counter won't keep going as long as in the cooler. To figure out how long it endures, continue to peruse.
How Long Does Turmeric Root Last? In the event that you store your turmeric root in the cooler, you can anticipate that it should endure as long as three weeks. In the event that you keep it on the ledge, you ought to want to utilize it inside a couple of days.
In the event that you want to expand your new turmeric root's life expectancy, your smartest option is to keep it in the cooler in a plastic compartment or as turmeric puree solid shapes. Ways Of utilizing Frozen Turmeric Root To utilize your turmeric root, either grind from its frozen state for a less untidy encounter. If you have any desire to utilize the whole root, let it sit out and thaw out for a couple of hours before use. The frozen turmeric glue needn't bother with to be thawed out except if you intend to involve it in a virus dish. All things considered, let it thaw out in a bowl on the counter for an hour or something like that.
If you have any desire to utilize your frozen turmeric however doesn't know what to do, attempt one of the accompanying thoughts:
Add it to your smoothie for a superfood, cell reinforcement support. Grind a portion of the frozen roots into a skillet curry dish. Heat up some water with turmeric root in it to make natively constructed tea. Make a brilliant milk latte by mixing plant-based milk with turmeric root puree, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Make a Mediterranean plunge with yogurt, turmeric, and tahini and match with new veggies.
Broaden the Existence of Your New Turmeric Root Turmeric root is a strong root that adds cell reinforcements, calming properties, and the right degree of zest to any dish. The main difficulty is that new turmeric root doesn't keep going extremely lengthy when put away in the fridge.
To squander entirely great turmeric root and need to expand its life expectancy, have a go at adhering to the above directions for dependable frozen turmeric root or turmeric root puree.

Just in case you haven’t stumbled across this fact elsewhere, you should be aware that pharmacies are often out of adderall and it has nothing to do with the pandemic. Or, at least, it USUALLY has nothing to do with the pandemic.
My understand is that there are multiple and fluctuating reasons for this, all stemming from the fact that the drug is highly regulated, and—yes—all of them at the expense of the people who actually need the meds. That said, the most consistent explanation I’ve received from more than one pharmacist over the years is that they’re limited in the number they can actually stock at a time, and demand exceeds that quota.
Yes, this is rage inducing. It’s also been a problem since the early aughts and I don’t see it going away, though it’s improved somewhat.
I recommend talking to your pharmacist and finding out whether this is a consistent problem at your pharmacy specifically. It can also help to have your psychologist reach out to your pharmacy ahead of time and confirm the meds are available—if not, there may be a generic available that they can prescribe instead. You can also see whether it’s possible to get your prescription a few days early, just in case.
Yeah there are some yikesy stories in my comments about access to Adderall and the other stimulant-side drugs for ADHD. It does seem to be a combination of "can't stock much at once" and "can't refill your prescription for you until two days before it needs it" and "But so like...are you an addict?" It's the typical bar to entry that people with disabilities face getting medication -- which I was prepared for, given I know people who struggle to get their meds each month and I've handled a lot of RFM issues surrounding them as well. I was honestly braced to spend several days getting that initial prescription filled, I was shocked when it just...went through.
In multiple ways I'm fortunate -- I don't face physical access issues, and I've spent long enough without the meds that I'm capable of wrangling the prescription without having to be ON the prescription. Like, I was actually able to fairly easily call the pharmacy about the length of delay, and that seemed to spur them into locating at least sixty of the little blue fuckers. I am also a middle class white guy in my forties, so I don’t get profiled as drug-seeking.
I've booked out my psych appointments so that I'll generally see him on day 32 of a 30 day prescription, and my diagnosis is mild enough that there are days where I feel the meds wearing off and go "Well, I'm ok without the second dose" so even my first 30-day supply lasted me 40 days. Next session I may speak to him about the automated mailed-to-home service that his clinic is partnered with and if that would simplify matters -- a genuine question given the recent scandals about some of those services overprescribing.
The most common thing I've heard -- here and from other people outside of tumblr -- is that a lot of people have convinced their prescriber that they need a slightly higher dose than they do, so they can get a 30-day supply of 20mg doses and split them, thus turning it into a 60-day supply of their actual dose which they can stockpile. Which is ripe for a satirical novel of some kind, because while none of the people I'm talking to are addicts, they're forced to behave like addicts in order to maintain a consistent supply of a necessary disability aid. I don't think I'm the one to write it -- at any rate, not yet -- but there's content in the idea of our cultural fear of addiction being so epic and hallucinatory that we actually force people into addictive behaviors because you can't exist as a disabled person within the letter of the law.

The way ADHD medications are handled is just. Terrible for people who have ADHD.
Like, if you get physical scripts, you're telling me I have to not lose these papers? And then when I'm ready to use one, I have to go to a pharmacy in person to drop off the script?? Then come back for it later? Every time??!
Luckily I get electronic scripts now, but even so, my usual pharmacy won't let me fill the next one online. I have to call, fight with a robot operator who thinks they can help me when they cannot, and beg them to transfer me to a person. A person who I hate to bother because pharmacies are already so busy but literally a human must put in this script. And not just any human---a Qualified One.
And either way, your "fill my next script, please" window is so, so small that it cannot possibly adapt to stresses in the system. Stresses like the STIMULANT SHORTAGE that has been a very real thing for many, many months, and is supposed to continue being a thing for many more months.
By the time I have to call, I'm almost or already out.
Oh, and according to my doctor's office, the scripts are "not transferrable" where I live. Which means if my pharmacy is out, my provider has to decide if they are comfortable submitting a whole new script to a different place!! Because even if I find a location that will tell me whether they have enough of my specific medication in stock, by the time a new script gets filled, there is a very high chance that they will no longer have the meds.
And look. I know some people are very good at skipping a few days a week to stockpile. I am not, because I am lucky that my meds have very few side effects, and I enjoy being able to focus on my hobbies and chores even if I don't have any Work Obligations.
It sucks that we are even expected to stockpile!! Because the system doesn't allow for enough flexibility to at least try and work around system issues!! No one would expect me to not wear my fuckin glasses a few times a week. No one would say "well, we're having a lot of issues with glasses prescriptions, so just take a few days off when you don't need to see until we get more in stock."
...Okay, so the analogy falls apart a bit, but if glasses were single use and regulated out the wazoo...you get the point. My meds are like my brain glasses! Brain glasses I already have to overcome executive dysfunction, time blindness, and social anxiety to get on a good day.
And now many of us are just expected to bumble around without them for months and months because our "what if you're an evil trickster prentending you need glasses 😠" system is so inflexible.
Here's hoping if it doesn't work out now, I'll be able to fucking see again in spring rather than the summer.
#adhd#medication#rant#stimulant shortage#and now i get to play the game of 'what do i even tell my boss?'#'do i tell my boss?'#'if i do should i wait until i fuck up?? or do i give them a warning and risk them deciding im just a screw up?'

How to get an emergency supply of medication (US centric)
A piece of advice that you see a lot on emergency preparedness lists is to make sure that you have extra medication on hand. As somebody who is currently on disability with multiple medications that individually cost upwards of $700/month without insurance, I know how hard to nigh impossible this advice can be to follow.
However that means I also have some practice in doing the best I can in stockpiling medications given the strict limitations of money and insurance requirements. Since emergency preparedness is in the news, I figured I’d share.
NOTE: This is based on living in the United States. I can’t speak to other countries.
ALSO NOTE: I am not a doctor. I do not have a medical background other than my own personal experience. Always always always follow the advice of experts and do not take anything I say here as an encouragement to contradict something they told you.
That being said, let’s talk behind the read more...
Ok, so in general for an emergency you want to have as much of a buffer on your prescriptions as possible. Ideally the calculation is based on how long it would take you to get more medication if you ran out. A week is a good place to start, more than that is even better.
However when things are tight we make our goal to have as much of a buffer as we can manage. If it’s just a day, well that’s better than nothing.
I say this because some of these steps start small and require time to build up. Don’t let that discourage you. Emergencies can happen at any time and don’t need to be as dramatic as a pandemic. These are good practices to put into place in general and now is as good a time to start as any.
1) Never Let Your Medication Run Out Before Getting Refills
If you have insurance and medication you take regularly you probably know the frustration of insurance limiting when you can order refills, typically with the smallest of possible buffers. That being said, it is a buffer, so take advantage of it as much as you can.
In other words, if insurance doesn’t let you refill medication at your local pharmacy until a week before you run out, plan on always picking up that refill as early in that week as possible. Likewise if you have to use the insurance’s mail order pharmacy, get the refills from there as soon as you’re able.
Some online and local pharmacies will even have an automatic system set up so that the refills of your maintenance medications happen without you requesting them. Set this up as soon as possible if you can. Otherwise make a note to put in the orders as soon as you’re able.
Online pharmacies will often put on the label of your medication what date you can request a refill, so check for that to help with your calculations.
This is the step that will work the slowest but will build in the long run. Even if you only manage an extra day here and there, the buffer will build up.
2) Ask Your Doctor For Free Samples
The beauty of these is self-explanatory if you have problems affording your medications. But even if your insurance covers your medication 100% (such as birth control) you still have the refill buffer to deal with. Free samples help pad that buffer for you.
Take the free samples if they are ever offered to you, and even if they aren’t don’t be afraid to ask for some. They may not always be available, especially for older medications now in generic form, but you can ask. You can also explain to your doctor about concerns over money or having an emergency supply of medication handy. They work with the US medical complex too, they know what it’s like. Related...
3) Ask Your Doctor For A Short Prescription
It’s common for insurance companies to force customers to use their online pharmacy for maintenance medications (aka anything you take every day). However, some of them will allow and cover a one month prescription filled at a local pharmacy. Check your plan to see if this is an option and take advantage of it if so. Again this is something doctors deal with all the time so don’t be afraid to ask.
If you already have a prescription set up with their online pharmacy this may require some finesse to make work. For example you may not be able to do this until a certain amount of time has passed since your last online refill. Or your doctor may need to tweak your prescription a tiny bit for it to count as “new” (think something like if you currently take 1 pill per day at 100mg, then they submit for 2 pills per day at 50mg each. Same medication and daily dose, but different enough to be “new” and allowed a one month trial. NOTE THIS CHANGE DOESN’T ALWAYS WORK IN TERMS OF PRESCRIPTION EFFECTIVENESS. TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT WHETHER THIS IS VIABLE.)
If you are able to use this, the key is to get the timing of it right so that it adds to your buffer. For example, a “new” prescription won’t necessarily invalidate your previous one. So you can get that one month from your local pharmacy AND request the refill from the online pharmacy. And then once that buffer is in place you resume getting your regular refills as soon as possible to keep that buffer there.
(Note: I say “necessarily” because some medications are more tightly controlled than others. What works for, say, synthroid won’t necessarily work for oxy. Again check your plan to be sure.)
4) Don’t Use Insurance / Ask For Discounts
If your insurance won’t cover a one month refill from your local pharmacy and there is any way you can afford it, try asking your doctor for a one week prescription that you fill at your local pharmacy without using your insurance. While you do this, also ask your pharmacist if they offer any kind of discount.
Again: I know VERY well how expensive this can be without insurance and/or a job. But that’s also why I know that this is an option. Pharmacists also know that not everybody has an insurance plan so there are often discounted fees or plans set up for those occasions. Explain to them what you’re trying to do and ask if they can help.
If you have a local pharmacy you use regularly they’ll probably be more inclined to work with you. If not it won’t hurt to shop around and find out what prices and discounts are available.
5) Keep Or Use Old Prescriptions IF IT IS SAFE TO DO SO
I cannot stress the IF IT IS SAFE TO DO SO strongly enough. That is KEY.
However, IF it is safe to do so, using old prescriptions can help you with that buffer.
For example, I just got a new prescription for contact lenses. It is one level stronger than my previous prescription. Because I follow suggestion #1 about not letting my prescriptions run out before getting refills, I have three weeks of my old contact lenses still at hand. A conversation with my eye doctor confirmed that using my old prescription won’t hurt me, so I will use up my old contacts before switching to the new. This now gives me a 3 week buffer on my contact lenses that I wouldn’t have had otherwise.
Another example: Another of my doctors has been trying different medications with me to manage my disabling depression and anxiety. Based on results, there have been times when I stopped taking a medication before I ran out of it. BECAUSE MY DOCTOR AGREES IT IS NOT DANGEROUS FOR ME TO KEEP THESE MEDICATIONS ON HAND I have held on to those medications even though I am not taking them anymore. This meant that later on when my doctor wanted to try a certain medication again, I still had it available to me. I saved the money on buying it again and have that amount of medication as a buffer if it turns out we’re putting it into my daily regimen.
A much more extreme, ONLY in serious emergencies and ONLY if it is safe to do so example: If the only difference between an old prescription and the new is dosage, having what remains of the previous dosage on hand IF it is safe to do so and IF there is an extreme emergency may be better than having nothing.
For example: if you previously took 50 mg per day and it was increased to 100 mg, keep the 50 mg handy and, in an emergency and IF the medication allows, take two of the 50 mg pills to help tide you over. (Or ask your doctor if you can do this from the start to build a buffer.)
Or if you have a medication which is only a SLIGHT difference in dosage and you need to take it daily and you know from talking with your doctor that this would be okay in an emergency, you have that dosage on hand as a “something is better than nothing” backup option. For example, some of my medications would be bad for me to go into withdrawal on. While it would not be ideal for me to take a lower dosage of them as a rule, it would be better for me to have SOME of the medication in my system vs going cold turkey, so I don’t throw away the old medications.
Again: This is the kind of thing you need to do based on talking with your doctor and developing an understanding of how your medications work and what kind of contingency plans you can make. This doesn’t work for everybody or all medications - for example one of my meds makes me actively suicidal if I take it as a single dose instead of two doses over the course of the day, even though it’s the same overall amount of medication. BUT it can be an option, so doesn’t hurt to ask your doctor and do some research to see if it might work for you.
And that’s all I’ve got on this. Good luck out there!
