Kazan was once home to a distinct school of iconography, which brought up many talented icon painters. The featured work is a fantastic example of the style typical for the iconographers belonging to the Kazan school. Distinctive dark tones imbue Saint Nicholas icon with solemn seriousness and profound privacy. Unfortunately, the master’s name was long lost to time. The piece is now held in the collection of the Petko Zadgorski Art Gallery of Burgas in Bulgaria.

As a wealthy Christian, Saint Nicholas felt called by God to help the poor by doing good deeds. His acts of kindness sowed the seed of the tradition of giving gifts at Christmas and placing them in a stocking.

Krampus - The Horned Devil of Alpine Folklore
Tumblr media
A still from the movie 'Krampus' (2015), directed by Michael Dougherty
The sound of cloven hooves and the clanking of chains is all you hear - as Krampusnacht, it is near.
The name of 'Krampus' might not be that well-known in our big world, but in the recent years this folkloric figure has made it to the big screen, appearing in a central role in the movie Krampus (2015).
The origins of Krampus are unknown, although this being most likely originates from the pre-Christian tradition. It appears mostly in the still-living traditions of the Alpine regions, where on the 5th of December the spirit of Krampus strolls the streets through men dressed in dark suits of sheep or goat skin, with cowbells around their hips, impersonating Krampus while they run around scaring the children. This night is commonly referred to as 'Krampusnacht', and it is followed by the day of Saint Nicholas (December 6th), who subordinates Krampus and leads him by his chains as the saint leaves the good-behaving children their presents. However, if the children were naughty, they might be given sticks instead of presents by Krampus itself, or even worse - Krampus might take them to his lair by trapping them in a sack it drags with it for these occasions only.

Folklorically speaking, Krampus is classified as a horned devil type of creature. As such, some anthropologists have suggested that it may have been a certain pagan horned deity or spirit that has been assimilated into Christian mythology by becoming a Devil-like being.
However, no matter what its original story is, Krampus is a prime example from the wild, dark and primeval pre-Christian imaginarium. A story so ancient that it barely has a name, but one so persistent that it still inspires and evolves. -Heidi (@theatrum-tenebrarum)

Do you have your boots out, ready for Krampus? It is Krampusnacht, after all. The night that Krampus visits the homes of the ‘naughty’ children; the ones ignored by St. Nicholas. Krampus serves as the counterpart to St. Nicholas, punishing the bad children, while St. Nicholas leaves sweets and gifts for the good children. Krampus is a half-goat, half-demon, horrific beast who literally beats children into being nice and not naughty. Krampus’ appearance is much different than St. Nicholas’, as well. Krampus has massive horns, fangs, is covered in long stringy dark hair, has a long pointed tongue, and the cloven hooves of a goat. He also carries a bell, drags large chains, and retains a bundle of birch sticks to swat naughty children. The worst of the worst children are thrown into his sack and dragged to the underworld. Some believe Krampus originated in Germany. His name is derived from the German word krampen, translating to claw, and is said to be the son of Hel, in Norse mythology. It is said that Krampus was part of Pagan rituals leading up to the Winter Solstice. Ultimately, the origin is unclear, as it is impossible to verify when the legend truly began. Many anthropologists and folklorists believe that the legend has pre-Christian origins, dating as far back as the 6th or 7th century CE. However, no written sources exist before the end of the 16th century. By the 17th century, Krampus was incorporated into Christian winter celebrations, pairing him alongside St. Nicholas. Krampus is the perfect antidote if you’ve had a bit too much of the sugar, spice, and everything nice preaching that tends to accompany the holidays. So, Krampus is coming for all the naughty-makers out there. Are you ready? Was it worth it? #thejaggedpath #krampus #Krampusnacht #merrykrampus #legendofkrampus #christmasdemon #birchswitch #krampusnight #stnicholas (at Houston, Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/Clz9kH8NI2x/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

E passava horas no confessionário. . São Nicholas de Tolentino, rogai por nós 🙏🏽 . #sãonicolaudetolentino #sãonicolau #stnicholas #vegetariano #marinheiro #purgatorio #vidadossantos #igrejacatolica #catolicos #pax https://www.instagram.com/p/ClixbhPLFDB/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
