We started our day with a free guided tour at the St. Louis Cemetery. I was looking forward to this because graveyards in New Orleans are totally different. They don’t bury the dead in the ground, but above, in a tomb. We heard a lot of different reasons why; there’s water under the city so coffins float back up, French influence, Spanish influence, etc. The way a family tomb works is very interesting, we had no idea!  Next to that, New Orleans cemeteries are also a big part of one of my favorite tv series, The Originals. I was very curious to see if the series was based on the truth. I was not disappointed.

After the tour we had lunch nearby and then moved on to another part of the city: Garden District. We had a free guided tour to tell us more about the area and the cemetery we visited. I didn’t know New Orleans had such an interesting history!

Garden District is a beautiful area filled with gorgeous big houses with lots of plants, trees, flowers. Our guide told us some stars own a house over here, for example Sandra Bullock, Beyonce with Jay Z and many others.

We took a charming little ‘train’ back to the French Quarter and walked back to our hostel via the Mississipi River, Jackson Square, Bourbon Street. One last taste of New Orleans before leaving.

Florence and I had a flight back home at the same time. She flew back to Los Angeles and I to Dallas. Saying goodbye felt bittersweet. I was leaving an incredible city and an even more amazing human. But I had a new friend now and a lot of fun memories to take with me, things to be grateful for.

Visited St Louis Cemetary #1 and hung out with a lot of dead people. Fun fact, the way they traditionally dispose of dead people in New Orleans is to place the body in a coffin, then in a crypt for a year and day and essentially cook them in the Louisiana heat. Then they will have a ceremony, exhume what is left over, which is basically clothes bones and hip replacements, sweep it into a compostable burlap sack and dump it into a hole at the back of the crypt into a pit underneath. So a lot of these are family owned and when a family members dies they do that, then wait for the next one to be put in there. Fun times.
