Shit, yall. My heart aches for everyone who has been hit by Helene.

When I was 7, and then again when I was 11, central Texas dealt with two of the worst flash flooding incidents in living memory. (The first was designated a '100 year' flood, the second, 4 years later, a '4 hundred year' flood) with the terrain of the hill country being what it is, we were stuck on our street for several days each time, penned in by low water crossings and a swollen Guadalupe River even after the rain had stopped. Whole neighborhoods in my town were washed away, rebuilt, and washed away again 4 years later. That shit sticks with you. Even if you rebuild, it's never quite the same.

These towns in the Carolinas and Tennessee will never be the same. Some areas will be abandoned. Places that might rebuild will face much higher flood insurance on top of just starting back at zero. The poor infrastructure will double up with the poverty and the grief. People who have evacuated may not come back. There may not be enough to return to. Those who do come back have a long, long fight ahead of them.

This isn't a call to action, not until we know what the needs will be specifically, but it is a call to empathy. To remember that the people in the south do not deserve to suffer through natural disasters. That it's not karma. It's not divine justice. It's not a joke.

Days 10, 26, 29 of 30 for @clovercrafted 's Summer Fun Event: By the Sea, Bamboo, Port

There's an old fisherman who lives in this cabin by the sea. He built it high on stilts to stay safe from the changing tides and waves, but when the water's calm, he goes out on his bamboo raft to enjoy the cool, salty air.

For this build, I really wanted to incorporate the quirks of the generated terrain - I built a bridge over a river, used bamboo stalks as supports, and put a hut in a nearby jungle tree, among other things. I think it brings a kind of life and belonging to the build.

This doesn’t look like a very expensive house, right? It is in Los Angeles, California, however, and the driveway looks like it’s been turned into a putting green, but the house was built in 1962 and is not mid-century modern, b/c it’s been remodeled. It has 3bd. 3ba. has metal siding, is for sale for $1.6M. Why?

B/c only a tiny part of the house is actually on land. Most of it is on stilts. Nope. 

Why the hell would you do this? The neighbors homes are all built on solid ground.

Also, the only outdoor space they have is in the front, b/c there’s no yard, just a hill. 

The owner is an avid collector and uses the garage for part of his collection.

Open the front door and see how they’ve renovated it. 

This family loves games, too. The first thing you see is a ping pong table. 

The kitchen is small, but cute. I like the red tile, but not the chalkboard wall.

The large living area is probably supposed to be dining room and living room, but they have a ping pong table that they also eat at.

The terrace on stilts at the back spans the width of the house.

Here’s a hall with storage and shelving for the collections.

And, a den, or more of a multi-purpose room.

One of the baths is very large and brand new.

I really can’t tell which of the bds. is the main one, b/c they’re the same size. There’s also a smaller bath.
