If I could go to college without debt I would make it my job to get a degree in every little thing that interested me. I'd get a doctorate in film studies. I'd have a bachelor's degree for every science I like. I'd try to learn at least 5 languages with varying results. I would learn something "useful" like coding and then follow it up with a ""useless"" degree like art history. I'd be the world record speed run holder for getting every degree possible.

But I can't afford college without going into massive debt, so instead I spent the last 5 years trying to figure out what I am passionate enough about to consider going into debt over, because unfortunately being passionate about everything is extremely expensive to pursue.

on episode 5 of Squid Game 2 and watching Gi-hun come to the realisation of the microcosm he's fighting in real time - the pitfalls and propaganda of capitalism, the "you can build your dream if you just work harder", the desperation to succeed overcoming their desire for everyone to survive. Everyone recognises the faults, the danger, the gamble of what they're participating in - the lotto over the bread - they know some will not fare as well as others. What's more they know in order for them to win, they know more people have to die. But they still willingly participate, not because they're evil, or blind, or lack empathy - but because they think they have no other choice. They allow themselves to become complicit and justify it by saying it's for their own survival.

the two biggest pieces of advice that i would express to anyone thinking about grad school are

1) do not pay for grad school. i am dead serious on this one. this was the number one thing every single professor i had in undergrad expressed to me. going to a grad school that doesn’t offer tuition remission or teaching or any type of funding so you can complete the work you need to do is not worth going into debt for don’t do it don’t do it don’t do it because—

2) besides the obvious (the degree) grad school offer you two things (ideally they offer both); training or access. by training i mean rigorous high level hands on practice honing your skills in your chosen field; by access i mean connection to people/institutions/funding to help support whatever work or research you’re doing. (i think that at least in the arts broadly speaking, it is easier to find training than it is to gain access.) i think it’s extremely important to weigh out what you’re getting out of a specific program and decide not only what is more important to you but also what opportunities a school is offering you

Looking back on Milchick being expected to be grateful for those Blackface portraits of Kier as a reward for all the hard work and long hours he put in knowing that Harmony was given a bust of Kier and a platitude about seeing God in her along with what amounts to a middle manager position in the company which she was then fired from (+ a warning about never seeking credit for the work she did while the man who stole it is given nothing but credit and acclaim but of course the knowledge is for all and you're overestimating your contributions) and thinking about Milchick repeating again and again and again to himself that he needs to let go of childish things and grow up, grow up, grow, and Harmony's ten hour shifts in the factory at eight years old and Why Are You A Child Ms. Huang and she's a child "Because of when [she] was born" but that's it <- You must abandon childish things. You must Grow Up. And the fact that the Wintertide Fellowship is implied to be something you are selected for, plucked from the factory (I see Kier in you) and given the opportunity of working in an office instead of toiling away in obscurity and you should be Honored by this and this should be Enough for you and if it doesn't feel that way - if you feel unappreciated or humiliated or that malicious urge to demand ANYTHING from the Company, the Eagans, Kier, perhaps you should remind yourself of what you owe them (everything). Where you come from (nothing). Remind yourself by doing one task for hours and hours and hours, working until your hands shake in the dark. Do not go home if your mother is sick. She's only your mother because she happened to give birth to you (just as you are a child because of when you happened to be born) - Kier is your father. Lumon is your family, and we need you here. Random HC for the seasons when giving a life/hearts didn’t require them killing you:

When Pearl gave lives in LL she would do it by cutting her hand open and shaking the others person’s. Literally giving life force to the other person. (It would not be the last time her blood stained Scott’s hands.) This wasn’t a strictly necessary way to give lives over, others did it through normal handshakes or hugs, or something less violent, but she liked the ritual of it. Never forget that even in Last Life, Pearl has always been pretty reckless.

When Pearl gifted hearts in SL, it was much less dramatic. After all, you didn’t lose anything by gifting hearts. She instead did it by either blowing a kiss or kissing someone’s forehead if they were close enough (she only did this to Bdubs in the back half of the season, when she gifted her heart to him for four sessions in a row. Etho, Gem, and Joel just got blown a kiss). This was the most common way to give over a heart in that season. Even the Heart Foundation would literally just blow a kiss in the general direction of the player they chose.

The pitch presentation for the Final Fantasy 9 animated series leaked on reddit. I won't spoil but the designs are very cute.

I dug around after you sent me this inbox. So, it seems it's not quite 100% confirmed that the leaks are the FFIX animated pitch, it just seems the most likely, so I'm still going to maintain the possibility it may not be real.

That said, if this is, indeed, what was proposed for the (hopefully still) upcoming show, then I get why they intended it for kids. When I first heard the animated series was gonna be all-age, I was mildly puzzled; FFIX's world IS very colorful and whimsical that it would lend well to a kid's cartoon, but its subject matter and content is still broadly meant for an older, teen audience. ...But my assumption was that they were gonna adapt the original game, not make a sequel!

FFIX doesn't need a sequel, it ended wonderfully. But also, also, ALSO, it has the best premise for a sequel because it stars the children of the Best Character Ever (and serious contender for Best FF Character Ever, don't @ me):

Hi all, hope all is well.

So here's what's up: my father recently died. he was young. no one was prepared. everything fell on me. I went into massive debt for his burial, and it continues to get worse as I pay for all the things I need to do to deal with his property. Working while grieving is also hard.
