Help Me Evacuate my Family from Gaza and Reunite with them in Ireland

In the midst of the chaos engulfing the region and the receding in media coverage, you might be misled to think the horrific war in Gaz*a has stopped. However, it breaks my heart to tell you that if anything, it only moves from bad to WORSE. Committing massacres against defenseless civilian families and children has become the ordinary instead of the horrific unordinary.

Unfortunately, the massacres and the mass destruction of our beloved Gaz*a have it into a pile of rubble and rendered the dreams and hopes of people as baseless, far-fetched, meaningless, and unrealistic daydreaming.

I was displaced with my big family five times in Gaz*a and escaped imminent death multiple times before I was evacuated to Ireland five months into the war and I can tell you from my firsthand experience that the situation in Gaz*a is beyond hellish. Can you even bear to imagine that Lifeless corpses of so many children are brought out from under the rubble of their bombed houses almost every day?!

I hate to admit that I never imagined I was this weak. I don’t have the courage or strength to bring the corpses of my future children from under the rubble in Gaza one day. I shudder and blood freezes in my veins when I imagine what could happen to my parents, brothers, sisters and their children while I am in a safe place too far away.

Therefore, I have the moral obligation to do everything in my power to secure a NORMAL, safe, and dignified life for them here. Please know exactly what you are contributing to by boosting my campaign. You are helping a Gaza family reunite in Ireland after their lives and dreams have been viciously crushed by the horrific war. And, sadly, the worst is yet to come!

After consulting the Irish Refugee Council and Doras in Ireland and Palestinian families who managed to reunite in Ireland, I know for certain that THERE IS HOPE!

Today, on Thanksgiving, I want to say thank you to all the great people whom I have met on Tumblr. I have found great friends and great joy in the Tumblrverse. Hi! I’ve been following you for a bit. I can’t help but notice you also like frogs. Have you ever heard of stickyfrogs on tumblr? They keep frogs as pets and are raising some tiny baby froglets at the moment. Their blog is delightful. I think you’d like it.

Ok so i don't actually know much of anything about the plot of Dracula. Somehow I've managed to avoid major spoilers despite being on tumblr over 10 years and following people like @thebibliosphere and other goths interested in vampires. Which frankly this is the best job tumblr has ever done keeping the lid on a major piece of media? Though judging by the Dracula Daily tag I think maybe we all of us collectively (except maybe Joy) only like Dracula in theory and no one has actually read the book? Which is why this site has turned into the best book club ever. But i digress.

I don't actually know Jonathan's fate? I'm not even making assumptions. But what I'm dying to know (no one tell me) is if that crucifex he only took to end an awkward social interaction actually is how he somehow ends this book alive. You know. *Should* he end this book alive.

Like i know crucifixes repell Dracula. But I also know that part (most?) of the book takes place in London. Does our boy have a chance to learn before he goes home why he was given it? Or does he immediately take it off after returning home and toss it in a drawer? I assume it comes into play later? But how much later? I guess I'll keep tuning in and find out.

I'm thriving. First the blorbos on OFMD now the blorbo in my email. This is a great season for special interests that make my brain go ping!

I'm just so glad to experience both with tumblr and not well after. I'm not usually in the thick of fandom.

I want to check interest in a possible project. If I spent the first 23 weeks of 2023 running a newsletter sending out a chapter of Frankenstein a week, for us to weekly Frankenstein like we are running daily dracula, except there aren't any dates. It would just be a chapter a week sent out in order, would anyone be interested? We'd just read it together and fucking meme it like we are Dracula. Just really running with the Tumblr as a book club idea.

I'm right now just checking interest. This would be a lot of work so I'm not doing it if there is zero interest. So some sort of response beyond general likes that can mean anything would be lovely.

Putting this in the Dracula Daily tag. But I also want to tag @thebibliosphere because I feel like Joy is the ticket to making this happen. (Or at least find out if anyone wants it.)

I have a good disability accommodation story.

I use a medium sized backpack instead of an over the shoulder bag, because chronic pain has my shoulders all jacked up and when really carrying it I need to distribute the weight. I pass as femme so it's essentially a purse (which I'll call it) that holds like my cash and cards and keys but also my epipens and inhaler and other medical essentials.

I took my 10yo to the art museum today. About 20 minutes into our visit I was told they have a bag policy and while my bag was essentially small enough i could keep it, they need it by my side so I'm not knocking it into shit via it being on my back. Some people just aren't aware of their surroundings sometimes, blanket policy. Cool i get it. They really just needed me to single shoulder it. So I did. But like another 10 minutes in despite switching between shoulders, I just couldn't. Disability just made it impossible. So back on my back it went i was just really really careful.

Of course I was approached again though by someone new. I patiently and politely explained I knew and understood the rule but disability made it so I couldn't single shoulder my bag, I really did need to distribute the weight.

And she was like, welp ok we'll just get you a sticker for your bag so security camera guy will know you're an exception to the rule I'll be right back. 2 minutes later she was back with a shiny sticker and that was that.

In a museum full of priceless art I get the bag size and how you carry it (people really do be backing into a monet with their fucking backpacks) rules. But they were happy to accommodate me without me laying out my medical history. I didn't have to explain why my shoulders are fucked up. I didn't give them the details of last weeks especially bad pinched nerve. I simply said i was disabled. I don't even think i needed to offer up the part about distributing the weight. I just offered that bit up freely so it made general sense to them. And they gave me a reasonable accommodation and stickered me so i could explore and not be stopped every 5 feet. And in return i did actually work really hard to mind my bag in relation to the art around it.

I just really appreciate when the world goes right!

Fic Rec Friday

This week, I'm recommending "Getting a Wiggle On" by Kedreeva.  It's a fluffy Good Omens fic inspired by a tumblr post, which then spawned a whole verse of its own.  The various Wiggleverse stories by multiple authors are delightful, and I highly recommend checking them out, too!  But I keep coming back to this first one - it's become one of my comfort fics.

This week, I'm recommending "The Better Part of Valour" by rachelindeed.  It's a fix-it fic for "The Greek Interpreter" (and maybe some other bits of canon), told from Mr. Melas's point of view.  The author does a great job with the characterizations of both Holmes brothers and Dr. Watson.  Includes Holmes/Watson as part of the setting.

Today, I’m recommending “To fix what is broken” by RatTale.  It’s the start of the three story “Silver Watch” series, but stands totally on it’s own.  (The whole series is worth a read, though!)  It’s a Sherlock Holmes & John Watson story (not slash), which can be read as either the canon setting or in the Granada series.

One last talent show to save the rec center

Ok everybody here's the deal.

My science education nonprofit, Skype a Scientist (you might know her, creator of the squid facts hotline and matcher of classrooms + scientists) has secured absolutely no grants to support general operations for 2025. But! We're selling advent calendars to fund our program! They absolutely rule. They can save our nonprofit asses. If we sell 5000, which I realize, is so many, we can fund our program for 2025. Then I can offer a bunch of programming for free. Running a nonprofit is a weird job.

Every day, counting down to frankly whatever you want (it's usually Christmas, but man, maybe you want to count down to Halloween, that's fine by me) scratch off the sparkly sparkly iridescence and reveal a fact about frogs! We have 24 top-notch frog facts here.

You should get one for every kid in your life, then get one for all the adults who still let themselves access joy in critters.

I’m about to start a new tumblr for Desperate Fun Productions, which I envision as an umbrella covering my several wastes of time:

1. Music

2. DJ efforts, even though they are becoming increasingly perfunctory

3. Zines

4. Streaming

Basically, somewhere I can promote all these without flooding my personal social media and yours with unwanted shilling. Now, I want you to be like Philip J Fry, but I can’t bring myself to cynically badger you with constant reminders.

However. Facebook is not my cup of tea – it wants my money more than it wants to connect me to like-minded people – and Twitter (never X) is right out. I’m not supporting that far-right fool by any means. Nor Tiktok. That app is a sleeper agent for the CCP.

And while I’m telling you that, I might as well tell you that from tomorrow, I’ll be streaming Fallout: London on Thursdays, 7-9pm NZT. https://www.twitch.tv/cranky_rabbit/

I’m also starting to explore coding in the MEG-4 fantasy console. If I understand this, I can simply embed the web version in a post or something... or just upload it to somewhere like Newgrounds. I’m aiming to re-create basic arcade games, and have a nice collection by the end of September next year. This tumblr would be a nice place to have a devblog.

Also I intend having at least three EP-s worth of music by the end of September, one of industro-ambient-noise, one of electronica you can at least nod to, and one of more lo-fi nonsense like Frog Salad. (I wonder if the Stickyfrogs got my loot package yet? You should follow them. Frogs doing nothing but being frogs.)

Sorry. And again, having all of those uploaded and ready for purchase before Wellington Zinefest, QR codes and all.

And of course zines. I think I have some ideas of what I could zine about – such as “obscure tapes I have in my collection” - could be worth a go. I’m wondering about returning to the A6 format – half as large as the A5 zines I publish. In 2030 or thereabouts, retire the smallies and re-release as an A5 compilation.

But... I’m woolgathering. At some stage, I need to pull the pin and get on with it. I just don’t know if I should.
