Today we also celebrate the Venerable Gregory, Bishop of Agrigentum. Saint Gregory was born on the island of Sicily to pious Christian parents. By ten years old, the young Gregory had already mastered his reading and writing skills and would chant in the church. At twelve years old, he was “adopted” by the clergy and put under the spiritual guidance of the archdeacon Donatus, spending ten years under him. Desiring to go to Jerusalem to venerate the Holy Lands, an angel of the Lord appeared to him and blessed his visit. In Jerusalem, he was tonsured a deacon and learnt much about the monastic and ascetical life there. He also visited Constantinople where he participated in the 5th Ecumenical Council. While in Constantinople, the Bishop of Agrigentum reposed and Gregory was chosen bishop through divine revelation. Living the life of an ascetic as bishop, Gregory served his flock with great zeal and humility. Because of his holiness, some malicious people became jealous and tried to slander him. They accused him of sleeping with a harlot whom they bribed to enter into his sleeping quarters. Just as the harlot went to speak at the trial, she fell into a fit of demonic rage. The judges believed Gregory to be a sorcerer and through the Pope of Rome at the time, was sentenced to prison. Through the saint’s humility and prayer, he was granted the gifts of wonderworking in prison and his fame spread throughout Rome. A clairvoyant elder who knew Bishop Gregory from childhood, persuaded the Pope to hold another trial in which the harlot, who was still demonically possessed, was to be present again. Through the prayers of the venerable Gregory, the demon was cast out of the woman. Coming to her senses, she spoke the whole truth to the council. The judges sentenced the initial slanderers to be executed, but Bishop Gregory impored forgiveness for them. Having returned to his own See in Agrigentum, Saint Gregory guided his flock in peace and love until his own repose. Good news, everyone! Compadre and the kids (including BabyInNICU) are all in the recovery stages of Covid. Their tests have come back negative, and they’re cleared for school, work, and other public things. Two people from our parish have volunteered to get the kiddos back and forth from school. We’re running a meal train for the family, and are making sure that they have help with laundry and cleaning. BabyInNICU is off his oxygen, and has been doing very well. Compadre is well enough that he got to go visit BabyInNICU last Sunday night! Comadre is still sedated. She has a leak in her lung, and now has some subcutaneous air from the leak, making her look a bit puffy and weird. Her doctor says the leak is small and should heal itself. She has no air around the lungs and there’s no need for a chest tube or further intervention. She’s basically stable, which is better than getting worse, but not as well as we’re praying for. I’ve been able to sim again, and Robin River will be back this evening. Obviously, we could all still use your prayers, but it’s no longer as extreme as it was. We’ve gone from terrified to scared. Thank you, so very much, for your prayers and love. Thank you for your notes of support. July 9th is the feast of Saint Gregory Grassi & Companions. Gregory Grassi was born in Italy in 1833, ordained in 1856, and sent to China five years later. Gregory was later ordained Bishop of North Shanxi. With 14 other European missionaries and 14 Chinese religious, he was martyred during the short but bloody Boxer Uprising of 1900. When the governments of Britain, Germany, Russia, and France forced substantial territorial concessions from the Chinese in 1898, anti-foreign sentiment grew very strong among many Chinese people. Throughout China during the Boxer Uprising, five bishops, 50 priests, two brothers, 15 sisters and 40,000 Chinese Christians were killed. When love has entirely cast out fear, and fear has been transformed into love, then the unity brought us by our saviour will be fully realised, for all men will be united with one another through their union with the one supreme Good. They will possess the perfection ascribed to the dove, according to our interpretation of the text: One alone is my dove, my perfect one. She is the only child of her mother, her chosen one.

Our Lord’s words in the gospel bring out the meaning of this text more clearly. After having conferred all power on his disciples by his blessing, he obtained many other gifts for them by his prayer to the Father. Among these was included the greatest gift of all, which was that they were no longer to be divided in their judgement of what was right and good, for they were all to be united to the one supreme Good. As the Apostle says, they were to be bound together with the bonds of peace in the unity that comes from the Holy Spirit. They were to be made one body and one spirit by the one hope to which they were all called. We shall do better, however, to quote the sacred words of the gospel itself. I pray, the Lord says, that they all may be one; that as you, Father, are in me and I am in you, so they also may be one in us.

Now the bond that creates this unity is glory. That the Holy Spirit is called glory no one can deny if he thinks carefully about the Lord’s words: The glory you gave to me, I have given to them. In fact, he gave this glory to his disciples when he said to them: Receive the Holy Spirit. Although he had always possessed it, even before the world existed, he himself received this glory when he put on human nature. Then, when his human nature had been glorified by the Spirit, the glory of the Spirit was passed on to all his kin, beginning with his disciples. This is why he said: The glory you gave to me, I have given to them, so that they may be one as we are one. With me in them and you in me, I want them to be perfectly one.

Whoever has grown from infancy to manhood and attained to spiritual maturity possesses the mastery over his passions and the purity that makes it possible for him to receive the glory of the Spirit. He is that perfect dove upon whom the eyes of the bridegroom rest when he says: One alone is my dove, my perfect one.

An update (of sorts) from me and the family for which I’ve been caring: I don’t think I mentioned it, but one of the issues is that my Compadre, the father of this family, is blind. So we can bring him all the groceries in the world, but without one of the kids, he can’t cook dinner because he can’t read the different boxes and canned goods. His blindness has led to all sorts of hardships and blessings, but not being able to drive in a town with very poor public transportation is one of them. That being the case, they were running out of diapers for DaughterAge1.5.

A mutual friend, pregnant with their third, brought the needed diapers to my house last night so I could deliver them today. And got in a car wreck on the way home. She and her baby spent the night in the ER, and were released at about 4:30 this morning. They will both be okay. Which is good, because I would have a hard time living with myself if she miscarried the baby while helping me help friends. Comadre’s been in and out of ICU for a week. Because of her pregnancy, her body was refusing to help itself and instead was using all the attention and help from the hospital to keep Baby well. He was due October 14. To help them both, she had a c-section today. They were both completely sedated for the birth (Comadre’s been intubated for a while because she isn’t breathing well.) LittleBoy had to be immediately intubated because of the sedation. He started off with 100% oxygen and lots of help from the machine, but he’s already down to 45% oxygen and less than half of his breaths are machine-supported. He weighed 4 pounds, 2 ounces, which isn’t bad for being born at 32 weeks. Neither he nor Comadre are out of the woods, everyone on staff seems genuinely hopeful for both of them. Compadre’s pneumonia isn’t any better, what with taking care of the rest of the family and supporting their online schooling. Now that the his wife and youngest are closer to better, he hopes to be able to rest some. I’ve been running their meal train and organizing groceries and such. My feet hurt worse than they have in a long time, but I hope to be able to give them some rest soon. I hope to be able to get back to Robin River this afternoon. A drug treatment center, commonly known as a rehabilitation center or clinic, is a place specially designed for the treatment and rehabilitation of drug addicts. All drug treatment centers have certain general functions. The main objective is to help an addicted person overcome their addiction and return to a happy and normal life. These centers provide physical, mental and emotional support to a recovering addict. They administer the best medication for detoxification to help patients to stop using drugs. They devise special programs such as individual and group therapy, counseling, meetings and social outings.
