Passover is in a few weeks! So - I will be demonstrating some special family holiday recipes on March 20th at Temple Beth El in Stamford, CT. Here’s what’s on the menu: a colorful and unusual dried fig and coconut Charoset (recipe is in the profile and on my website) plus a really easy recipe for roasted salmon. We seem to have more crab apples this year than we know what to do with. Did you know a crab apple is just a normal apple that is under 2 inches?! You learn something new every day. When I was a kid, my grandma made stewed dried fruit. EVERYBODY’s grandma did. I’ve updated the dish but I’m sure grandma would approve!! This version is for a new generation. We eat it with yogurt for breakfast. But also with ice cream or whipped cream for dessert. So delicious whenever you eat it! And so many good memories go with it. I think that almost every family has one recipe that it wouldn’t be Christmas without…this is ours. It’s a stewed fruit with port that I’ve eaten ever year of my life and that’s 62 years. It changes a bit every year… this year there are dried apples, pears peaches in it but the basic composition remains the same… port, apricots, oranges, plums, dates and raisins… lots of cinnamon, cloves and allspice… plenty of star anise and this year, a handful of dried ginger. I think that my mothers family has been eating this every Christmas morning since around 1850. What’s your families most traditional Christmas dish? I follow #historyeats, by Dr. Eleanor Barnett. Every day she posts a painting that includes food or some ingredient and then says something really interesting about it — like today, there was a painting of an apricot tree and Dr. Barnett said the word apricot comes from “precocious” because apricot trees are among the earliest to bloom. Who knew!? Anyway, she also mentioned a “challenge” to post a work of art that includes apricots. Well, I am no artist! So I can’t do that! But maybe I could meet the challenge by posting this lovely dish, khoshaf, which includes apricots (the dried kind). It’s a Middle Eastern Muslim specialty made by macerating dried fruit. It is beautiful in my opinion and also traditional during Ramadan, which started on April 2nd, and is also a perfect post Seder dessert for Passover, which begins April 15th. So: khoshaf is my entry into the #historyeatsillustrated challenge.
