Hello. I've Been Waiting by j_gabrielle

Non-powered AU where Steve and Tony are in their late 20s and were high school sweethearts, married a year after their graduation - as Steve had wanted to save and then use his own money to buy Tony a ring. Though it hurt him to let Steve go to join the army, Tony knew it would have hurt both of them even more if Steve had stayed at home, miserable. They skype when they can, send emails (and the occasional letter because Steve is old fashioned that way - although Tony will never admit the amount of glee that fills him at seeing the physical envelope in his mailbox), and keep in touch as much as possible.

But there are still the long periods of time when there is no contact, and Tony can't help but worry and fret terribly about his husband overseas. One such period of time, Steve and Tony's friends (Bucky, Rhodey, the rest of the avengers, ya know), are surprised to get a group email from Steve - but happy at seeing that the reason: Steve is coming home early from his tour and wants to surprise Tony.

arei’s thoughts: I’m a sucker for Steve surprises Tony with a military homecoming. Short and sweet and lovely. 

A ghost for Christmas by gottalovev 

When she died, Peggy left Steve an old house in Connecticut. When he decides to spend Christmas there, Steve finds out that it's already inhabited... by a very handsome and kind of annoying ghost.

arei’s thoughts: this was so cute and the way that Rhodey came into it was really great. Loved it.

During a team game of Never Have I Ever, Tony finds out that Steve has done—some things with men.

Things spiral from there.

arei’s thoughts: tony finding out about steve’s sexual past in a game with the team is a pretty niche trope and one i absolutely adore. Loved this.

arei’s thoughts: I love the idea that some things are inevitable, and how this team came together was lovely. 

Beyond Imagination by nakurumok

Tony swears he is fine. Really.

Sure, he was injured in the battle (only slightly), his suit was shut down after he was hit by some magical beam, crashed into the ground and lost conscious for nearly a day. But he is fine. Totally. Unquestionably.

Except, if he would admit it, he feels like he had gone through a few rounds of boxing with Hulk, while without the suit. He feels dizzy, and the ground seems floating under his every step and his head hurts like hell. But despite all of these, he is fine.

… and has he mentioned he sees Captain America, who should only exist in the comics, standing in his kitchen?

arei’s thoughts: The way things came out slowly and then all at once was lovely. It was clear that something was wrong, but how it played out was just--so nice.

It might appear that award-winning surgeon Tony Stark, the head of neurosurgery at Shield Hospital, well and truly has his life together. Now if he could only figure out how to tell people that his father, world class neurosurgeon Howard Stark, is locked away in a nursing home with Alzheimer’s, devise a way to get Chief Fury off his back for good, and work out what the hell he’s going to do about the weird on-again-off-again thing he has going with the head of cardio, he’d finally have everything sorted.

“So.”

Tony ran his hand through his hair and stared as his frenemy/crush/roommate, who grimaced back at him. 

“I thought I was fixing it.” 

“Sure, I can see that by how the bed is in pieces all over the floor.” 

Steve - who, for the record, looked like the guy in the Gold’s Gym logo, much to Tony’s libido’s joy and simultaneous dismay - had the good grace to grimace. “I was using it as leverage for my tricep dips.”

“Steve,” Tony groaned. “This is particle board. It absolutely cannot sustain that kind of pressure when you don’t have counter balances. Do you really not understand simple physics?” 

“No,” Steve snapped. “Please continue to talk to me like I’m a moron.” 

Tony bit back a growl. “Did you really not have a box spring under that? You were on a mattress on slats?” 

Steve nodded. “Didn’t seem important.”

“Good Lord, Steve,” Tony gasped. “Aren’t you this paragon of fitness or whatever? Do you not understand spine health? Don’t answer that. I have a King and while you take up an obscene amount of room, you can sleep in there until we get you a new bed.” 

Steve gaped at him. “Why?”

Because I’m a masochist who is desperately attracted to you while also hating how fucking self righteous you are. 

“Because I’m a good guy, Rogers. I know that’s escaped your notice.” 

Steve didn’t say anything and gave a tight nod instead. “Thanks, Tony.”

“Don’t mention it.”

Steve Rogers was living in his literal worst nightmare. A: He was roommates with someone he loathed and yet wanted to fuck them desperately and could not square that circle. B: His bed - that he could barely afford in the first place, much less afford a replacement, broke literally out from underneath him while his roommate was home and therefore his roommate had to interfere which is what he did best and which is what drove Steve absolutely UP A WALL. C: He was now sharing a bed with the roommate - a glorious, soft yet firm, bed which placed lust object within grabable reach and… 

Tony was so very, very grabable. 

The bed Steve could afford was on back order - because OF COURSE IT WAS - and so he was on night four of sharing Tony’s bed and the problem with sharing a bed with someone was that it got harder and harder to hate them the harder and harder his dick got being around them. 

Especially when, at 2am, Tony started shouting in his sleep. 

“Tony,” Steve said tentatively, which Tony reacted to with a whimper. 

“Tony,” Steve said again, and Tony shouted and started writhing in the bed, as though he was in pain. 

“Anthony,” Steve said firmly, hoping the formal name would shake Tony out of the apparent nightmare. 

“Stop. Dad. I swear, I’ll be good, just stop.” Tony started to mutter and Steve ignored every part of his brain that told him he didn’t like this man and went to gather Tony in his arms. It was clear the man needed comfort, even if it was just his subconscious. 

“Tony, you’re safe, you’re your apartment and the only threat here is me since you hate me,” Steve murmured and noticed Tony had gotten quite sweaty in the process of the nightmare, and so he brushed Tony’s curls gently back from his forehead and took another moment to appreciate how beautiful his roommate was. 

A narcissistic, entitled pain in the ass, but so fucking beautiful. 

Who gave up his bed, which you know he’s picky about sleeping alone since he never brings dates home, to make you more comfortable, who lets you live here wellllll below asking rent because Bucky asked him to, who - Steve swatted his subconscious and focused back on Tony, who woke up with a start and scrambled himself out of Steve’s arms. 

“Ah! Please tell me no one kissed me.” 

“No,” Steve rolled his eyes. “You were having a nightmare and I was just trying to wake you up.”

“Oh,” Tony said, indignation deflating. “Well, thank you. I should have warned you.” 

“It’s no problem.”

Tony didn’t respond, but got up out of the bed. “I always get a snack after one of these. You want one?”

Steve nodded. “Why not.”

A year later, when they were celebrating their engagement, their mutual friend Bucky - who worked with Tony and had grown up with Steve - made the toast that they were basically Beauty and the Beast. 

“Barely even friends,” Bucky sang, intentionally off-key, as everyone groaned. “Then somebody bends-”

“Like I bent over your cock that first time,” Tony muttered into Steve’s ear. 

“Unexpectedly.”

“Definitely didn’t expect you to swallow the first time,” Steve murmured back. 

A snack on that first night had turned into a conversation, which had turned into a charged moment, which had turned into resolving the charged moment with frustration-fueled sex, which had turned into some begrudging confessions, which had turned into… 

Well, let’s just say Steve returned the bed to IKEA as soon as it eventually came.

Steve hates Team Game Night.

It’s a team building exercise that rose out of hell to torment him for however long he decides to stay on this Earth, and he hates it.

And unfortunately for him, he’s the one who came up with it, after a miserable number of Google searches as to what would constitute a good way to instil cohesion and comradery in a group of people (and aliens) who give diverse a new meaning, and put it out there for the team, so if he turns around and declares it’s a stupid idea, well, they (and he means Clint and Tony, mostly) will never let him hear the end of it.

Thankfully, board games have been officially banned, after the Great Monopoly Disaster of Three Months Ago, when Natasha landed on one of Tony’s hotels and forked up thousands of dollars to Tony’s shit-eating grin and nice doing business with you, Romanoff, jumped to her feet, started swearing loudly in Russian, capsized the enter table before storming out.

But as for the reason why Steve hates Team Game Night, well, it all starts with Never Have I Ever.

“I know. Let's enjoy our last day here.”

Things had been quiet in the city, which everyone was thankful for. But then, the Assemble call came and soon enough, they found themselves in the middle of a New York street in shambles, with Steve and Tony bickering.

“Have you noticed something off about those 2 the last week and a half?” Clint asked Natasha.

She hummed her agreement, unable to take her eyes off the two of them. “Can't put my finger on it though.”

“I mean, love makes people do weirdass shit, but this… this is weird. I liked it better when they hated each other, if I’m being honest here. Them finally admitting their feelings for each other… it wasn’t worth it if we get whatever is going on here.”

“Right now, I’d agree with you.”

“Gotta admit, the paddleboard was fun. Better than fishing, but this might still be my fave part of this trip,” Steve smirked, pulling Tony in for a kiss.

“We have a whole mountain and lake to ourselves, and staying in bed is your favourite?”

“Staying in bed with you is, yeah.”

Steve slid his hand down the side of Tony's face, his fingers tracing along his cheekbones and jaw, trailing down his neck.

“You know when I said I thought I was falling in love with you?”

“I remember.”

“I’m definitely there now.”

Natasha walked in the common room kitchen and stopped in her tracks. “What are you doing here?”

Steve looked to her with a smile. “Morning! Sorry, we were out of coffee upstairs, so we came down here.”

“No, I meant Tony. It's 6:30 in the morning. Why are you up?”

Tony looked up at Steve, as if he held the answer, making Natasha quirk an eyebrow. “Well, Steve stayed over in the penthouse last night,” he finally started explaining slowly, before turning back to Natasha. “He woke me up when he got out of bed, and I figured I might as well get an early start myself.”

She didn’t say anything, just squinted in their direction as if trying to decipher a puzzle. She grabbed an apple from the fruit bowl on the counter and turned around to leave.

“Well this is already a disaster,” Tony mumbled, letting his forehead rest against Steve's shoulder.

“It isn't so bad, Soren. 3 days down, only 11 more to go.”

“Why did we agree to this again?”

“Cause I owed Stark a favour.”

Steve flipped Tony over his shoulder, slamming him to the mat before pinning him easily underneath him.

“Oh look,” Tony exclaimed, overly happy, “you got me again.”

Steve chuckled before bending to reach Tony's face and placing a kiss on the tip of Tony's nose. “I’m starting to think you're letting me win.”

“Sure, keep telling yourself that. It's good for my ego. Now, if we move this to the bedroom, I can guarantee I can have you pinned under me in no time.” Tony winked at Steve.

“I like the sound-" Steve was quickly interrupted by the sound of FRIDAY informing them the Avengers were required to assemble.

“Guess it'll have to wait,” Tony pointed out, holding up his hand so Steve – who was already standing – would help him up.

“I wish we could get away sometimes. Pretty hard to try and date you when we keep being interrupted like this.” Steve frowned as they headed to the elevator.

“What if there was a way we could?”

“I don’t think Fury will okay a vacation for this. Especially since he doesn’t know we're dating. Or trying to anyways.”

“I mean, we could get away, but still be here too.”

“I don't know much about this century, but pretty sure you can clone us that quickly, Tony.”

“Ye of little faith. Leave it to me. We'll be at my cabin in no time. FRIDAY? Can you get Talos and Soren on the phone for me?”

Steve looked at him curiously as the elevator door opened to his floor.

“I got this one, Cap. Don’t you know I always get my best ideas after a good sparring session with you? That's when I first asked you out.”

“Don’t get sidetracked with whatever this is about. I’ll see you in the jet.”

It seemed like these days more often than not his return to earth in the Iron Man suit was at least somewhat out of control. And he'd be damned if he'd admit it to Pepper, but on more than one occasion he hadn't even been conscious when he'd hit the ground.

So crashing wasn't really a new experience. He would get banged up a bit, maybe put a scratch in the suit somewhere, but bruised ribs healed and there was no better way to work off the post-battle high than smoothing dents out of his most prized possession.

He had a feeling crashing in the Quinjet, without his armour, was going to be a bit different..

Steve has very pale skin, which means that anytime he blushes, it shows. 

So Tony's made a game for himself, that has evolved over the years, alongside their relationship, trying to make Steve blush.

In the early days, he’d gone with lewd sexual remarks that surely would have had Captain Virgin replicate a firetruck, yes? No. Absolutely nothing aside from strange looks from the team, and whilst his dignity was long gone, he felt he should keep his team’s respect, so that plan had stopped, in favour for all types of other things, until Tony makes the incredibly precious discovery, the morning after they sleep together for the first time, that the thing that’ll set loose a gorgeous pink blush over his skin is simple, yet seemingly effective, nicknames.

“Baby--” Tony starts, but stops himself to watch, in wonder, the pink flush of Steve’s skin. Steve notices what he’s looking at and immediately hides his face in his shoulder.

“Shut up,” he grumbles.

“Darling, it’s beautiful,” Tony says, brushing back Steve’s hair. Steve makes a distressed noise.

“Sweetheart, dear, my light, sweetcheeks, sugarplum, peache--” Tony says, grinning, getting interrupted by Steve kissing him.

“You know,” Tony says, still smiling, in between kisses, “if me calling you various nicknames leads to your adorable blush and kisses, I may never call you ‘Steve’ again.”

Steve gets that little determined wrinkle that bisects the space between his eyebrows, and says, “Baby,” quietly, testing it out, then it’s his turn to watch, awed, as a blush spreads across Tony’s cheeks. His smile widens, and he launches into a flurry of pet names and nicknames, kissing him between each one, and Tony thinks of just how screwed he is, because he went and fell in love with Steve goddamn Rogers, but he can’t seem to find any regrets, so he lets himself blush, before he turns the tables once more.

Fandom Interview

Thanks to @stonyholic for chatting with me about why they love fandom! A meta fill for Team Marry in the @stevetonygames

Flame: So, Jaz, what drew you to Stony as a ship?

Jaz: oh wow, where do i even start? i actually first joined the fandom because of amazing stevetony fanart i came across online (and partly because i was exploring queerness in entertainment media and then within myself). but once i became more familiar to fandom it was this: them. their relationship across universes in marvel is undoubtedly important. seeing how civil war unfolds both in the movies and the comics (and how it might not have unfolded had they acted or communicated differently) is a great example. they’re opposites in so many ways, but they still find ways to understand and trust each other, and that’s wonderful in itself. 

the second thing i love about them is their dynamic in terms of fandom tropes. angst? domesticity? fluff? enemies to friends, friends to enemies? they’ve got it all, and the fact that they have different dynamics in different universes so that fans get to explore so much more about them is what i love about the ship. 

the third reason is the copious amount of canon material i get to draw from when i create fanwork. steve and tony have hated each other, fought each other, forgiven each other, admired each other, loved each other, and they’ve even married each other, like, canonically (but genderbent because marvel). i can’t even begin to express how beautiful their relationship is and how much i love them individually as characters, too. and these are the reasons that drew me and still draw me to stony as a ship.

Flame: As someone who started in this fandom with another ship, I totally relate to falling into them once you get to know them. Tony is my personal bicycle, and I'll read Steve with a lot of people, but I'm definitely pickier with him. And you're so correct about versitility! My gosh, how much you can do with them - especially if you do what I do, and strip them down from canon to their essential human elements.

Also, to me, they're the two most coded as caregivers within the canon, and so that just makes it so much fun to write them as the center of group dynamics, which is my favorite thing to play with in my fics. For these games, why Team Marry?

Jaz: i actually went for team kill at first because i asked a friend to randomly pick from fuck, marry and kill. XD but i was never a pure angst or darkfic kinda person. i struggled for a while between team marry and team kill because my favorite trope is emotional hurt/comfort (which is half angst and half fluff, what do you know), and i was on both teams until the games started and i realized my heart was really with team marry and all the amazing creators i’ve met along the way, and i thought, hey, my preferred types of hurt/comfort would probably fit team marry more anyway. so, ultimately, my competitiveness and loyalty wouldn’t really let me be on more than one team, and i grew attached to team marry, so i’ll be fighting tooth and nail for it!

Flame: Love it! I chose all three teams to stretch my creativity, but my heart and loyalty truly lie with team marry. It's been so much fun creating fics that don't need to be murdery or porny, but can be whatever I want them to be.vAnd your h/c stuff absolutely fits within team marry - I just see it as h/c within covenantal relationships, rather than specifically about weddings and marriage. 

Anything else you want to share about fandom before we wrap up?

Jaz: i would like to thank all the creators in the fandom, actually! a lot of them are so nice, and so talented, and it was just amazing to get to know them or even just to admire them from afar. the stevetony community on instagram died down a lot after endgame (which was why i was half out of fandom for two years or so), but i’ve found so many active, fellow creators here, and that makes me feel proud and happy!

Somewhere along the way, they sort of become a family.

Leaping to Conclusions - 42k - stevetony

Basketball games. Lunch in the park. Evenings at the movies. Tony and Steve are longtime Avengers teammates and the best of friends, and Tony's been pining away for Steve as long as he's known him. Tony knows Steve's straight, but if Steve were going to date a guy, it would be him, wouldn't it? Everyone knows that. Unfortunately, no one told Steve. And when Steve decides to keep trying online dating after the Lover's Leap fiasco, Tony is shocked and heartbroken to learn that Steve's new boyfriend is none other than... Batroc the Leaper! But for the sake of Steve's happiness, Tony must put aside his own feelings about Batroc before it costs him Steve's friendship -- or worse.

Tony has been trying to woo Bucky for about a year now. He flirts, he builds him things, he kisses him on the cheek after movie nights and does almost everything he can think of to convince the guy that he really wants to date him. Bucky is strangely steadfast in his answer though: No, they can't date. After an explosive argument about the issue, Tony leaves the Tower for Malibu, making the team wary of a moody Bucky. When he comes back after two weeks, things are a bit...different. Tony is actually doing exactly what Bucky asks. And it is creeping the team out while making Bucky go crazy.
