Hi all!

Now that the assignments are out, we are looking for pinch hitters!

If you've missed your chance to sign up for the exchange (and can't wait for the prompt fest in summer 🤭), why not give pinch hitting a try?

What is pinch-hitting?

A pinch-hitter is a creator that steps up to create a gift for someone when the original creator has to drop out of the exchange.

Signing up to be a pinch-hitter is easy! All you have to do is send us an email at stevetonyisendgame@gmail.com stating your interest and ao3 handle and we'll add you to our list. If a pinch hit is needed, we'll contact everyone on the list and give the assignment on a first-come, first-serve basis.

3. There’s no way in hell Tony would be interested in him when his kids clearly hate him.

Bucky thinks Steve’s only problem is that he’s an idiot.

“Where did I go so wrong in life,” Tony whines as he enters the library, sinking into the couch next to Steve, “that none of my children want to rep the family and go to MIT for college.”

“The boys still won’t let you write their recommendation letters, huh?” Steve asks with a quirk to his lips. He bookmarks his page and closes the novel, placing it on the table next to him.

“Is it because of Thanos? Is this punishment for not defeating him that first time around? Are Harley and Peter lashing out because I couldn’t stop them from turning into dust?” Tony continues without acknowledging Steve.

“Pretty sure punishment was the five years of living with half of our loved ones missing, but sure Tony, this is definitely a targeted attack from Harley and Peter on you specifically.”

“I give and I give and I give. I set up rooms for them here at the compound so they can stay on the weekend. I work with them on their projects and go to their parent-teacher conferences when their mom and aunt can’t. And how do they repay me? By refusing to let me be part of their college application process.”

“Maybe they just want to do this on their own,” Steve suggests. “They also have their school counselors and teachers helping them out.”

“What next? Are they going to tell me I can’t go to their graduation?” Tony goes on, still ignoring Steve’s perfectly reasonable responses. He flings one arm over his eyes, the other one draping off one arm of the couch he’s leaning on while his legs splay inelegantly. The red and gold of his prosthetic arm gleams where the light from the fireplace reflects off of it and Steve can't look away, mesmerized by the curves of the arm and how similar and yet different it looks to Tony's armors. He wails, “Steve, why do my kids hate me?!”

Steve had brought them into this situation, now he had to live with it.

They had lost Tony, and it was his fault. 

He was just hoping that Fury’s communicator would do… something. He didn’t expect a galactic weapon of a woman.

The weeks of waiting with no word from anyone were hell. Then, the signal. Steve knew he had about five hours until Carol would get here. He pressed his shirt, and shaved off his beard.

When Tony walked down the stairs of the spaceship, Steve couldn’t control himself. He forgot everything around him. There was just Tony. He sprinted towards him.

Then he remembered - he couldn’t hold him anymore. It wasn’t his place.

So he watched Pepper pull him close, kiss him on the cheek.

Empty eyes looked at him. Hollow. Tony looked so, so weak.

It was his fault, he knew it. They should have faced this one together.

But it was way, way too late for that now.

Oh, what a time it was in 2012 when the first Avengers movie came out! People discovered what the comics Stevetony fans had long known — Steve and Tony go together like peanut butter and jelly, coffee and donuts, marmite on toast. The movie launched thousands of fanworks, and we all remember the Tower fanwork days, where Steve and Tony bickered and fell for each other as the team threw movie nights and hoped that Steve and Tony would finally admit their love.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe covers the whole range of possible tropes like found family, pining, enemies to lovers, angst, and the ever popular fix-it works! So many great moments to explore and expand on — Steve and Tony coming together at the Battle of New York, the night at Clint's farm, the devastation of Civil War, Steve reuniting with Tony after he was rescued from space, and fixing the ending of Endgame (or not). And that's without mentioning all the opportunity to drop Steve and Tony into other settings and worlds; soulbonds, sports AUs, "and they were roomates" modern AUs, omegaverse, fusion works, and so many more!

There's plenty of material to work with, some great chances to imagine fork-in-the-road scenarios, and lots to love about Steve and Tony in the MCU — what inspires you?

are there any differences in how your approach writing stevetony compared to stories where one of them is involved in another romantic pairing?

It was pretty funny to get this question right before I got tagged in a rec of one of my two Winteriron fics. The universe has a theme, I guess.

I haven't written a whole lot of stories for Steve and Tony where the endgame is another pairing -- I have a couple Winteriron stories, and I have a Clint/Steve story, and even though the Steve/Batroc story ends up Steve/Tony I feel like they end in an amicable enough place that it should count. This is in contrast with, say, Tony/Ty, because while I would say that I ship them it's not because I think their relationship is the OTP kind of thing. Tony's sure not with Ty because Ty's going to make him happy, anyway. They fulfill a different narrative need in my soul.

I don't think I've written any stories with other pairings that are as tightly tied to canon as a lot of my Steve/Tony fic is -- I tend to write a lot of fic that is like "okay, how do Steve and Tony feel about each other now that this one specific canon event has happened to both of them" (like Civil War, or the Judgment Day fic I am currently writing) whereas my other-pairing fic is like "it probably takes place at this time but it's not based on a specific thing that they underwent together and possibly these characters didn't even know each other in canon then so you'll have to use your imagination." I think it's a little trickier as a writer because then you have to do more of the heavy lifting yourself to show why they'd be good together whereas with Steve and Tony it's like "obviously we all know that these guys are in love because we have issues and issues about how they feel about each other and we can mention a couple things and then just skip to the getting-together bit." Possibly this is because I am just The Most OTP about Steve/Tony.

The dynamics are obviously different. Clint and Steve have this kind of antagonistic hero worship thing going on that is definitely Them and would look really, really weird in a Steve/Tony story. And when I write Bucky/Tony it seems like a lot of it ends up being about Steve anyway, even if Steve isn't the focus -- like, if that Cold War Winteriron story had been Steve/Tony instead, Tony would have cared way sooner about how Steve was slowly losing his mind. Steve's situation matters to him once he knows what it is, but Steve is kind of just hovering around the edges of the story there. Canonically, Bucky and Tony's initial dynamic is very much defined by the absence of Steve (by which I mean that Bucky tries to kill Tony because he thinks Tony is responsible for Steve's death), so I think when I write them Steve still has to factor in, even if he's not part of the pairing.

It's different, is what I am saying. But it's still fun.
