My Week(s) in Reviews: July 28, 2024
Deadpool & Wolverine (Shawn Levy, 2024)
Not perfect, but still a shitload of fun. Fan service moment after fan service moment fill this newest addition to the far-too interconnected MCU, giving fans all the gasp-inducing moments they could hope for, and very few that they went in expecting. I expected this film to open up the MCU more in terms of the Multiverse, but really like that they instead opted to use it as an ending to the Fox branch of the MCU while further exploring the Merc with a Mouth's deepest insecurities in the most accessibly meta manner imaginable. - 8/10
Longlegs (Osgood Perkins, 2024)
This is bloated with an awkwardly realized atmosphere that turns a creepy premise into a nightmare of 'elevated' horror clichés and forced quirkiness. It does have its moments, and the overall concept is appropriately chilling, but the execution is just so damn pretentious that it drains all of the potential out of the final product. But hey, at least Nicolas Cage is having fun. - 5/10
A Quiet Place: Day One (Michael Sarnoski, 2024)
Meh... there's some fair to solid tension built throughout, but there's nothing new here. And the character work is—at its best—boring and predictable. Unnecessary prequel is unnecessary. - 5.5/10
I also revisited Christopher Nolan's Interstellar for the first time in just about five years because someone sent me some TikTok theory that the whole movie is McConaughey's journey through the afterlife. It's a theory that holds very little to absolutely no water at all when you actually watch the film, but it gave me a reason to watch it again, so there's that. And I had my annual screening of Steven Spielberg's Jaws; as perfect a film as there's ever been.
Enjoy!
-Timothy Patrick Boyer.

Canadian police won't investigate doctor for sterilizing Indigenous woman - ABC News
"The Canadian government says it is urgently trying to end the forced sterilization of Indigenous women, describing the practice as a human rights violation and a prosecutable offense. Yet police say they will not pursue a criminal investigation into a recent case in which a doctor apologized for his “unprofessional conduct” in sterilizing an Inuit woman.
In July, The Associated Press reported on the case of an Inuit woman in Yellowknife who had surgery in 2019 aimed at relieving her abdominal pain. The obstetrician-gynecologist, Dr. Andrew Kotaska, did not have the woman’s consent to sterilize her, and he did so over the objections of other medical personnel in the operating room. She is now suing him.
“This is a pivotal case for Canada because it shows that forced sterilization is still happening,” said Dr. Unjali Malhotra, of the First Nations Health Authority in British Columbia. “It’s time that it be treated as a crime.”
Kotaska declined to comment to the AP. Last month, he released a public apology, acknowledging the sterilization “caused suffering for my patient.” He said he was acting in what he thought was the woman's best interest.
The Canadian government has said that anyone who commits forced sterilization could be subject to assault charges and that police are responsible for deciding whether to proceed with criminal investigations.
But the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said they would not be investigating Kotaska, because the woman hasn't filed a criminal complaint.
Kotaska’s statement is “very likely to not be admissible in a criminal court proceeding” and the victim would need to let investigators see her confidential medical records, the RCMP said. The police said they “respect the rights of the victim to seek justice for this through other legal mechanisms and choose which processes she participates in.”
The woman’s lawyer, Steven Cooper, said she is unwilling to proceed with a criminal complaint and remains traumatized from having participated in a medical board investigation.
Lisa Kelly, who teaches criminal law at Queen’s University in Ontario, said there is no requirement in Canada’s legal system for a victim to participate, if there is other compelling evidence.
“In this case, there is another doctor and nurse, and possibly others, who could provide credible and reliable evidence beyond a reasonable doubt that the patient had not consented to the sterilization,” Kelly said.
While police and prosecutors have discretion, Kelly said, they "do not have the discretion to simply turn a blind eye to what appears to be evidence of a serious aggravated assault.”
Sen. Yvonne Boyer, who has proposed law would make forced sterilization itself a crime, said the long history of mistrust between Indigenous people and the police made it difficult for many victims to pursue criminal prosecution.
“If a police officer becomes aware of a crime being committed, they have an obligation to investigate,” Boyer said. “Why would it be any different for an Indigenous woman being sterilized without consent?”
The woman sterilized by Kotaska sued him and the hospital for 6 million Canadian dollars ($4.46 million), alleging his actions were “oppressive and malicious.”
In May, medical authorities in the Northwest Territories suspended Kotaska’s license for five months, forced him to pay part of the cost of their investigation and required him to take an ethics course after finding him guilty of “misconduct.” Noting these punishments were now completed, Kotaska said he hoped to “continue working with humility.”
Emma Cunliffe, a law professor at the University of British Columbia, called it "a very light suspension for forcibly sterilizing someone.”
She added: “It sends a very disturbing message that these violations of Indigenous women are not viewed as serious.”
The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Science and Educational Media Group. The AP is solely responsible for all content."

My Week(s) in Reviews: November 5, 2023
Killers of the Flower Moon (Martin Scorsese, 2023)
There's so much in here that's absolutely amazing; just infuriating, brilliantly acted, beautifully shot material that hits so incredibly hard. Sadly, it all lives within a sluggish, insanely overlong, tediously repetitive package. Yes, I understand some of this - especially the repetitive nature of the late second act - is done on purpose to highlight just how terrible what these people were doing was. The thing is, it would've been perfectly successful in getting this point across should these moments be cut in half. Lily Gladstone is a pensive, emotionally piercing revelation. Leo is a one-trick pony, but his commitment to the bit is damn impressive. And De Niro delivers a calculated, nuanced performance seething with a self-righteous, evil sense of entitlement. The rest of the cast consists of either highly effective or unfortunately wasted minor characters. There's somehow no room for anything merely 'good' in the bunch. I really think Thelma Schoonmaker should've put her foot down in the editing room. She very clearly caved to Marty's stubborn vision, and it muddied up the flow of her editing, which is normally one of the main things that really makes a Scorsese film kick. The screenplay is just too faithful, and too dedicated to honoring every single one of the moving parts in this story. Eric Roth really needed to put his foot down and trim out some of Marty's fat (but knowing Roth as a writer, he was very likely just as much the problem). Rodrigo Prieto's cinematography, Jack Fisk's production design and Robbie Robertson's music were perfection. No notes. Cut an hour and this would be a stone-cold masterpiece. - 7.5/10
Talk to Me (Danny & Michael Philippou, 2023)
Damn. This was fantastic. Now I'm pissed I missed it in cinemas. A super creepy and perfectly executed premise fueled by surprisingly good performances and genuinely terrifying moments, throughout. Love that it never heavily relies on jump-scares. Love how brutal these spirits get. Love the hopelessness of the third act. - 8.5/10
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (Steven Caple Jr., 2023)
This is a movie that exists. Three years from now, I might not remember that it exists, but it does. It exists. The action and dialogue are annoyingly childish, but hey, these are movies based on toys, so whatever. Anthony Ramos should not be starring in movies. He's a painfully lifeless actor it hurts to look at him (which is why I waited for video for this one, I even opted for DVD for the resolution was lower). That's mean, I know, but I don't care, I'm still scarred by having to see him play a creepy ass child in Hamilton. - 3/10
A Haunting in Venice (Kenneth Branagh, 2023)
Definitely my favorite of Branagh's Poirot films. This one actually nails the mood and atmosphere of the story. Branagh smartly takes advantage of the set design with effectively utilized wide shots throughout, and the cast never becomes distracting in their stardom. 7/10
Golda (Guy Nattiv, 2023)
Helen Mirren is really good. So is the makeup. The rest? Not so much. This definitely feels the victim of a director with no clear vision for how they should tell this story. But hey, Helen Mirren is really good. - 4/10
Enjoy!
-Timothy Patrick Boyer.
