Song Review: Steve Earle - “I Ain’t Ever Satisfied” (Live)
Steve Earle is able to conjure audience participation with little more than a couple of c’mons.
He pulls the trick on the live version of “I Ain’t Ever Satisfied” released to announce the July 12 arrival Alone Again … Live. It’s just Earle, his voice, his guitar, his harmonica and his fans, who add the titular refrain at his subtle command.
This is how audience participation should work - organically, that is - as Earle returns to true solo work after the 2022 disintegration of the Dukes after four decades.
“It seemed I’d come to a crossroads,” Earle said in a statement. “Left? Right? I chose back. Back to performing solo like I did in coffeehouses when I first started.”
If “I Ain’t Ever Satisfied” is any indication, that was a wise move and Earle’s fans have his back.

The gardens of Astra Castle are unlike any you’ve seen before. Certainly, you’ve never been to a royal castle previously. Your father’s own hold is modest, still bearing the wooden foundation, whereas the rich lords have poured mortar and built in stone.
So, it is a great honour to be among the noble women chosen to serve the queen. Most unexpected. As a daughter of a lower house, it is rather unusual, but it comes with the newly set writ tabled at the end of the uprising. That is how your father tells it anyhow.
King Steven is as newly crowned as he is newlywed. After a lengthy revolt against the previous king, the land has settled, and upon his victory, the new ruler promises the expansion of prosperity to all. The very precedence of his war rested on the greed of the former court and its covetous lords.
To those who took up his mantle, he has made good his word. To the commoners, he has sent bread and ale, livestock and alms; to the nobles, he has granted titles and lands. You were of the same doubt as your father, however, you expected to be forgotten in the disarray.
Yet, you were not. You’re there with several other ladies. A set of blond twins borne of a duke and duchess, the sole heir of a widowed countess, and several earl’s daughters such as yourself. Unlike them, you do not wear satin or silk, not muslin either. You have only the dyed linen your mother attempted to enhance with some embroidery around the cuffs and collar.
“Marcia and Marigold,” the twins introduce themselves as you cluster together in the gardens, grooms and servants bustling around carriages and chests. “Lady Calliope,” they call out the countess’ daughter, “we met prior, yes? Your mother is near Estrela.”
“She is,” Calliope answers in her stern manner, herself seeming a widow in her black dress. The shimmery fabric makes up for its single tone.
“Ameri, Dorida, and... Selene,” they point to the other girls, themselves clothed in scarlet, rose, and azure respectively. “We know the earls, your fathers. They gathered at our father’s hold for the battle near Caffre.”
The twins take turns speak so that sometimes you cannot track whose lips are moving. It is even that they trade off in the middle of sentences. You find yourself almost as lost by their words as your new surroundings.
“And you...” The twins turn their jade eyes upon you. It is there you have found the only difference in them; they have the same heights, the same hair, the same gowns even, but there is a sliver of grey through Marcia’s green iris. “We haven’t figured who you are.”
“My father is an earl. In Woodsdam.”
“Woodsdam,” they echo in unison and share a look. They are perplexed.
“A minor house,” Calliope provides. “a farmer more than a noble, if I’m not mistaken.”
“We have vast lands and we tend to them, yes,” you assure. You expect their condescension. Your father warned you for it but he bid that you keep your chin up. The king has given him a mission of his own and so you will represent the family for the time. “We keep our people well and we fed the king’s troops when they marched."
“Mm, sounds very... common,” Marigold grins and her sister snorts into her hand.
“We know many lords like us, yes. They work hard amidst their vassals. It keeps the lands strong so that we may better serve the crown,” you return evenly.
Your mother helped you prepare. She coached you to keep your manners and your spine. The latter is much more difficult as you face these ladies and their bobbles with only a ribbon in your hair and a pair of patched gloves.
“Woodsdam? I think I rode through it once on the way to my grandfather’s summer castle,” Ameri tuts, “it was little more than a swamp.”
“It must’ve been the spring rains, perhaps, lady,” you offer.
“Summer house,” she enunciates, “one travels there in the summer.”
Your cheek twitches at her barbed retort. Very well. You are not used to their sharpness. Their chittering has thus far centered on gossip and the cost of their new caps.
“A wonder the pauper’s daughter received an invite. Are you certain you can read, lady?” Dorida snipes and looks to the twins for approval. You notice how they all tend to do so.
“It was sent to my father, Lord Eldon,” your voice quavers. You are not so strong as your mother bid you to be.
They cackle at your meek response, “the precious maiden of Woodsdam.”
You put your head down as the activity all around threatens to swallow you up. You wish the ground would rent and you would fall right through. All your excitement has dissipated to a sludge in your veins. You touch your cheek as you try not to show your embarrassment.
“The Lord of Woodsdam,” a deep voice startles you as boots approach from behind, “is that what I heard?”
You stiffen up as the ladies before you hush and blink, almost in tandem. They curtsey as their faces wash over in shock and you turn to face the newcomer. A man in a deep blue vest over black sleeves and grey breeches. He wears belt of gold and a circlet across his brow in a similar hue. It is that which betrays his statues.
You lower your eyes and mimic the other women, mortified to be faced with new king so informally. You would not think him wandering out in the yard. Still, he has vowed to be unlike the former leige. That he would be of the people.
“King Steven, your majesty,” the others titter in a messy chant and you murmur your own propriety as you back away. You find yourself still to the shoulder of the king as the other ladies give no room for you to join.
The vision of him stains your mind. He is tall, with dark blond tresses that extend past his neck, and blue eyes which put his own attire to shame. He has a jaw which looks etched in stone and a bearing which matches his rank. He is tall and broad and a finely built knight.
“It is an honour,” Marcia says most boldly.
“You may rise,” he allows in a breezy timbre. “I did hear my wife would receive new ladies. Young ladies.”
“Your majesty,” the murmur rolls across each lip.
“It is much needed. We have so many established ladies at court and yet we need to think of the future. Of the next generation,” he declares as he emphasizes his words with his large hand. You watch his garnet ring to keep from so brazenly looking him in the face.
“Certainly, your majesty,” Marcia and Marigold chime in unision.
“And don’t worry for there are many young lords as well,” the king laughs galely at the quip which makes the ladies, yourself included, blush. “Ah, then, Woodsdam I believe we were speaking of...”
You blink and glance at the other ladies. They are cowed, unsure if they were overheard in their derision. You hope as much as they that they were not. It is rather unflattering.
“My father, Lord Eldon,” you explain, “your majesty.”
“You? You are the young lady of Woodsdam I heard so much of.”
“You did? Er, your majesty,” you curtsey apologetically; unnecessarily.
“Certainly, I did. Your father was a great assistance in me holding counsel with the lower lords. He is very patient. “When not about his duty, he spoke of you oft. Though what matters are more important than family?”
“Yes, your majesty,” you can’t help a smile, “my father is a very kind man.”
“Kind and courageous. I’m certain you’ve inherited as much,” the king praises, “and these other ladies. The twins who belong to Mawsley, the Countess of Clovers daughter, and the three earls daughters from the White Plains.”
The ladies each bow their heads as he proclaims them by their forebearers’ titles. You watch from aside, feeling even more out-of-place. The king recites them all proudly as he extends a finger for each.
“Allow me myself to extend a welcome to Astra. When you are sorted, my wife shall receive you all and have you acquainted with the grounds. I hope you enjoy them, we’ve had the gardeners at work day and night,” he pronounces, “for now, I must be off, for a king has many obligations and not so much time.”
He bows and turns on his heel, marching off with his shoulder straight and head high. He walks as a soldier does, not some lord. You’ve seen the difference before, more recently in the aftermath of battle. A soldier is more akin to a farmer, much as your father, whereas a Lord tends to keep his steps tight.
“Wow, oh my,” Dorida fans herself, “he is rather handsome.”
“Oh yes,” Marcia and Marigold say, the latter forging ahead, “we met him at our father’s castle. He is ever so charming.”
“Hm, and the queen would love to hear it, I’m certain,” Calliope intones brusquely.
“The queen is not here,” Ameri sneers, “so what does it matter? Besides, is it so wrong to state a truth?”
“He is very elegant,” Selene agrees.
“Much too kind, as well,” Marigold snips, “Woodsdam? He speaks as if it more than some paltry farmhouse.”
“You’d never even heard of it,” Calliope remarks.
“And how had you, hm? You seem the bookish type. Perhaps you should leave the maps to the men. What good will a river or road do for a widow’s welp?”
“Needn’t be cruel,” Calliope rebuffs.
“Pity if this is the lot they send,” Marcia shakes her head as the sisters share another cryptic look.
You keep to yourself. That is all you can do. It is better to watch and learn than to leap and land wherever you might. Your mother always said so and she was your best teacher.
“Right, there must be some maid who might show us to our rooms,” Marigold stands on her toes and waves at each passing servant. “I tire of the sunlight and boorish company.”
👑
You have two trunks awaiting you in your chambers. Not as the other ladies who had at least a dozen each. Less humble than your lunger are the rooms themselves.
There is an antechamber hung with tapestries showing wildlife and flora, a table set for two and cushioned bench by the window. The bedroom is draped in similar hangings with a four-post bed and a grand hearth. A desk, another bench, a woven carpet, and fine accouterments on square tables. And a closet for the commode as well and a pot in the far corner of the bedchamber.
If only your mother and father could see this. They would be just as amazed. You can’t help but admire all of it. To touch the curtains as you approach the window and stare off at the afternoon sky. The gardens are a medley of hues; petals and thorns; leaves and dirt. It’s all so wonderful, you can still hardly believe it.
Seems those other ladies can’t either. You can’t help but think of their words anon. They said so outrightly what you doubted inwardly. You don’t belong here. It must be so clear to them.
You lean on the ledge and peer down into the garden pathways. It is almost a labyrinth with how intricately they’ve laid out the hedges. You lower yourself down to your elbows and cross your arms as you sigh.
Your eyes are drawn from the swaying roses to the dark speck that appears below. You squint at first. From the second floor, it is harder to discern. It is the glimmer of gold in his hair and the defined gait that gives away the king. For an instant, you believe you might be dreaming.
He walks along one path and to the next. There is another with him. A man with darker hair and a stauncher figure. They speak and stop just as they enter a circled walkway centered by a large vase of flowers. The other man talks, though you can hear neither, and the king rubs his chin.
You should turn away. They might think you an eavesdropper. Oh, too late! You don’t dare move as the king tilts his head. You wouldn’t want to pique his attention. You cannot tell if he has spotted you. Not until he raises a hand and waves. The other man stops and looks to follow the gesture.
You stand up straight but before you can flee in horror, you recall yourself. It is improper to turn your back to the king. You lift your hand and return the wave. He dips his head and turns to clap his companion’s shoulder, pointing him onward.
Oh, you hope he is not unhappy. If you pray, perhaps he will not have recognised you. You needn’t an enemy of the king as well.

King and Prince 26
Part 25
Steve wasn’t new to flirting, but courting was different. Courting was full of long term intention. And between royalty, it was a great event. At least, normally it was. Kings, dukes, and earls and such talked behind doors to be certain that their children were a proper match. To make sure that the union would be beneficial to both sides.
Before it even really started, Steve knew this one would be different. For one, his father wasn’t involved at all. Steve did spare his parents a thought, wondering what they would think of what he was doing. But they lost the right to have any say in his life.
Something they were adhering to was the fact that they couldn’t be alone anymore. Not that he and Eddie had been alone often before this. But now, whenever people came and went, changing shifts and making sure they weren’t by themselves, there was a charge in the air.
One such incident was in the library. Steve wasn’t much of a reader, but he liked listening to Robin rave about the books she read. And sometimes she treated him like a dog, sending him to fetch the bigger tomes on the higher shelves for her, which he had started not to mind. He had grabbed the book from on high, something about botany, and slid down the ladder. The moment his feet touched the ground, Eddie was there.
“Come here often?”, he drawled.
“You know I don’t”, Steve rolled his eyes.
“Well any glimpse of you is a welcome one”, Eddie said, reaching right by Steve’s head to grab a book. An excuse to be close. “Just had to get this for Will.”
“Happy reading”, Steve said.
Eddie walked away, leaving Steve to lean against the bookshelf. When he returned to Robin, his head fell against the floor.
“What happened?”, she asked, taking the book from him.
“I said ‘happy reading’”, Steve said, voice muffled.
“You’re a regular poet.”
Meanwhile, Dustin and Will had to listen to Eddie wax poetic about how Steve looked in the light of the library.
“It was as if fairies themselves dusted the air around him.”
“Pretty sure that was just old book dust”, Dustin said.
“You know, you should probably tell Steve these things”, Will said. “Like, what was that thing you said about his hair?”
Dustin groaned. “Which one?”
“Doesn’t matter. I just think he’s definitely in the love letter stage”, Will said.
And so Eddie got to writing. Any sort of lovely thought about Steve, he wrote it down and slipped it to him in some kind of way. Sometimes directly, other times having it delivered. They were little sweet nothings, the kind a lover might whisper in one’s ear. But a special one was found attached to a box that had been brought to Steve’s room by a servant one morning.
To my Dearest,
I have noticed you taking Chestnut on rides more often. It is only right that a rider of your stature be outfitted suitably. It is my hope that you will find this gift to your liking. I wish to see you riding unbidden, soaring over the fields just as I know Chestnut longs to go full burst. I can see in my mind’s eye the wind caressing your hair as I long to. Your body moving in harmony with your steed in ways I can only dream of.
Sincerely,
Your Admirer
Steve opened the box and was delighted by a fresh pair of riding boots. His breath was caught in his throat as he took them in, ready to put them on and try the boots right away. He’d bring Lucas along. He needed some riding practice anyway.
---------------------
Eddie was treated to the sight of Steve returning with gorgeously windswept hair. Lucas was with him and must have pointed it out because Steve started trying to fix it and put it back into place. They were going down a different part of the castle so he was only able to hear part of their conversation.
“I don’t even have a real brush”, Steve said, fiddling with a single lock of hair as if it would make any difference to his appearance right now. “Let alone anything else.” He let out a sigh and it struck Eddie like lightning.
It didn’t take Steve long to receive his next gift. A basket that had a brush, combs, and different tonics and creams for his hair. And of course with it, a note.
To He who shines like the sun,
Only the moon’s face can dare to compare but even then it falls short when held up to your beauty. I have found you fetching in many varied states, yes even when you were coated in the grime of your prison. I couldn’t admit it then, but I can say now that your eyes burned bright in that dark cell.
You need no augment to make yourself beautiful, but it is my desire that these tools will please you.
From your devoted worshiper
Steve could hardly wait for his next bath and just barely did. This time, he didn’t simply rinse off the dirt of the day. He did his full hair routine for the first time in months, feeling more like himself than he had since. As a prince, he was able to have a servant wash his hair if he pleased, and typically people considered themselves lucky to touch his tresses. Here, no one was clambering over themselves to serve him, but he wondered if Eddie would ever perform that act for him.
After his bath, he dried his hair and once it was just a touch damp, he used the other gifts to style it. It wasn’t quite easy. He only had a dingy mirror to work with and had to do so standing. But it was more than he’d been able to do. And he made sure Eddie knew it, leaving his room right away to pretend to ‘just-so-happen-’ to find him.
He did find him in his study, placing points on a map with Jeff and Nancy. The door had been partially open, so Steve knew it wasn’t a private discussion or anything. Still, his heart thumped, thinking about the consequences of going into a king’s space uninvited and unannounced. He leaned against the door and didn’t even have to say anything, because Eddie turned at just that moment, trailing off like he had forgotten what he was going to say.
“I got your gift”, Steve said simply, twirling a lock around his finger.
Eddie watched it, enraptured, wishing with all his might that he could be that finger. The moment seemed to linger, neither wanting to stop it. Unfortunately, neither Nancy nor Jeff were on board with it going uninterrupted. Jeff cleared his throat while Nancy snapped her fingers.
“Your Majesty”, she said pointedly.
“Your visage is distracting, sweetheart”, Eddie said. “It is just our luck that we are not planning a war.”
“Lucky you”, Steve smiled. “I shall take my leave then. I wouldn’t want you to accidentally attack someone on my behalf.” He had gotten what he wanted to anyway, the perfect reaction.
It didn’t take too long for the entire castle to be aware of their king’s affliction. He had finally fallen for someone. Someone who seemed to reciprocate. The entire staff was twittering with the gossip. It was the first time in their lifetimes after all, that they’d seen the king show such interest. But not everyone was happy about the new development.

Have some pining or something like it
Eddie's never been the class clown. Oh, he'll crack a joke—usually when it's inappropriate—and he enjoys making people laugh, but it's not something he has to do. And maybe he doesn't take seriously the things people think he should, but that's because the things other people think he should take seriously are bullshit. But it doesn't make him the clown. That’s not a part he wants to play.
He prefers to stir shit up. Keep people on their toes. Cause a little trouble.
But then there’s Steve. Steve. It's just... Making him laugh, it's infectious. Addictive. Eddie could drown in his laugh and die a happy man.
So, yeah, he's happy to play the jester to Steve's king (no, not king, he's— The son of a duke, or earl, some member of court, the hapless jester falls for hopelessly) and it's enough. The little huffed laughs, the full body ones. The way his eyes crinkle and he dips his head. The way his bottom lip catches in his teeth. The thing his jaw does when he's trying not to laugh.
And it’s enough. It is. It’s just, sometimes…
Sometimes Eddie wants. More than making Steve laugh.
He wants to make Steve smile, not because he cracked a joke or pulled a stupid stunt, but just because. He wants to make Steve look at him the way he used to see him look at Wheeler, sometimes.
Fuck, he wants... He wants to make Steve love him. And he doesn't know how because you don't make people fall in love with you, right? There's not a lot he knows about love, but he knows that. People fall in love or they don't.
And he wouldn't make Steve, even if he could.
But he wants and he wants and he wants.
It gets so big that it pushes out the enough Eddie feels when Steve laughs, when his eyes crinkle, when his jaw does that thing when he’s trying not to laugh. Overwhelms it.
And Eddie hates that. He hates it. Steve’s laugh—making Steve laugh—was the best thing. The best feeling. Eddie chases it and chases it and he doesn’t know if Steve even knows and then—
And then, one day, Steve looks at him and he smiles for no reason Eddie can think of and it's enough again.

Everybody is all smiles for the group picture, from heroes to villains and everything in-between. Even characters who were otherwise sticks in the mud like Hank genuinely smile for the picture. Villains such as Muntz, de la Cruz, Lotso, Thunderclap and his gang, Syndrome, Evelyn, Randall, Waternoose, Hopper, Skinner, and Ercole, as much of evil psychopaths they were, are seen tenderly and respectfully singing along. Even Sid, who was a massive bully to Hannah, is seen giving her a kind brotherly embrace. Also, most movies’ main cast seem to be cramped together. Even the villains stand near their respective heroes, everyone in a healthy relationship with their families and loved ones are tenderly holding each other close, and many of the larger characters offer their bodies for the smaller ones.
Forky, Heimlich, Dory, Jack-Jack, Mater, WALL-E, and one of the triplets wave at the camera.
Dim and Wee Dingwall give the camera dopey smiles.
The egg-shaped bluebirds and the gawky bird stand perched above the entrance. The bluebirds are happy to have the gawky bird with them, a far cry from how they treated him in their short.
Sulley carries Boo tenderly in his arms. Helen does the same to Jack-Jack, as do Presto with Alec, Carl and Russell with Kevin’s babies, Elinor and Fergus with their triplet sons, Embarrassment with Envy, Massimo with Machiavelli, and Izzy with Sox.
Terri attempts to dance before his other half stops him.
Hank carries Marlin, Dory, and Nemo in a coffee pot.
Voyd and Abby giddily bounce in place, clearly the most excited for the photo.
Linguini carries Remy while Colette holds Django and Emile.
WALL-E and EVE hold the umbrellas from The Blue Umbrella.
HAN-S still can’t stay still, shaking aggressively as the photo is taken.
Kevin and her babies take the time to mimic Carl once again.
Maudie and the Clan Dingwall hunk share a loving look.
Young Macintosh flexes his pecs while giving the camera a cocky smile, the same type of smile given by characters like Terry, Darby, and Clod.
The Witch has her Crow standing perched on her shoulder.
Being stationary volcanoes, Uka and Lele are unable to leave their photo. Thankfully, they have Thunderclap and his gang to hold it so they can be in the group picture.
Nostalgia sticks her head out from behind Embarrassment, clearly hiding from the other emotions.
Riley, Grace, and Bree all carry Knick together while Riley’s parents carry the Miami and Florida knick knacks, Val and the Fire Hawks carry the Egypt, Jamaica, Palm Springs, Israel, and Death Valley knick knacks, and Coach Roberts carries Sunny Atlantis in her fish bowl.
Cindy, Son’s fiancée, winks at the camera as the photo is taken.
Machiavelli gives the camera his standard bored look.
Mei has her red hair, panda ears, and panda tail, continuing to embrace her panda.
Aaron Z gives the camera a thumbs up while Tae Young makes a heart with his hands.
Izzy gives Sox a neck scratch.
Alisha and Kiko’s inclusion also counts due to their backlash following the movie’s release.

Order of “””””””””victims””””””””” of the vet’s clinic. (The animals overreact)
1. Nix and Larry both escape their enclosures to get some pizza from the zoo’s restaurants only to get interrupted by Milo being lassoed by Keepers and dragged into the vets clinic. Coming out with a cone of shame. (Nerfed)
2. Besty - caught with a net and flu-shorted after warning Nix and Larry to about the vets and to hide in her bunker-lodge (nerfed)
3. Shelly - the dam door shut before she can get in. Leaving to her to a trip to the vets clinic. (Nerfed)
4. Fuzzy - voted out along with Pepper to get supplies for the lodge and gets baited with a Happy Treat (buffed)
ACT 2 - Pepper warns everyone about the traps and everyone splits in pair to seek items outside the den.
5. Molly - Sacrifices herself and leaves Pepper to care for Joey (Buffed)
6. Earl Steve and Buck - Steve and Buck first ignored earls “nagging” not to take the Happy treats and they they all get tranquilized and injected (Both nerfed)
7. Yara - sacrificed herself so Lizzy can escape. (Nerfed)
8. Duke, Ollie and Jade - Rounded up with a lasso along with Bruce by Megan D. Guard. Jade clawed her way out of the rope only to get a flying injector shot accidentally stuck on her tail. Bruce escapes scot-free by hopping into a barrel when no one’s looking. (Duke Buffed, Ollie/Jade nerfed)
9. Pepper gives up and sends herself for a check up and gets a cone of shame.
10. Larry sacrifices himself do Nix can escape and ride Finn to the rivers for safety (buffed)
11. Finn and Donna- The shots injector gets spilled into the river and both get infected by treatment. (Finn buff Donna Nerf)
12. Skippy and Lizzy- Skippy Used as Bait by Nix so she can sneak in to the vets clinic to save Lizzy only for her to accept a check up.
13. Nix looks for Frank for Advice, only to find out he gave up for a check up. (Franks advice was to stop running and let the vets treat you any way)
14. Nix lets the vets treat her. (Nothing happens, simple bug fix)
Bruce is the only one that gets away scot free and reveals he accidentally rolled into the rivers and into the sewers when he tripped in his barrel.
Lmao! I should make a art of this idea for fun lol! Aside from that, I wouldn't blame them, tryna escape the vet clinic😔

David Byrne’s “Unexpected Medical Situation” Leads Steve Earle to Postpone John Henry’s Friends Benefit
Steve Earle’s annual benefit for the Keswell School is postponed while David Byrne seeks treatment for an “unexpected medical situation.”
Originally scheduled for Dec. 19 in New York City, John Henry’s Friends, featuring Earle, Byrne, Terry Allen and others, will be rescheduled with a revamped lineup.
“I was truly looking forward to … this show - and supporting the school’s better understanding for neurodivergent folks of all ages,” Byrne said in a statement.
“Had songs picked out and everything, but an unexpected medical situation was discovered and sadly the treatment is scheduled the week of the show.
“It can't be changed.”
Earle said “we will be circling back to (Byrne) to anchor a future” benefit. In the meantime, refunds are being offered and Earle promised rescheduling and lineup news “in the near future.”
“Our sincere thanks to David Byrne for his willingness to suit up and show up for the kids … John Henry’s Friends at Keswell depend on all our support and we will not let them down,” Earle said.
“Stand by.”

I'm working on planning a fic and i gotta decide what rank/titles the Carvers, Cunninghams, Perkins and Hagans have. Steve's the crown prince of the main country in this story, Heather is a princess from another country. Mr Sinclair is a baron, and Mr Wheeler is an Earl. I think it'd make sense for Tommy's father to be a Duke, because he grew up being close with Steve… but I also kind of like the idea of Carol outranking him

The Mastersons are singer-songwriters/multi-instrumentalists Chris Masterson and Eleanor Whitmore. When they’re not touring the world as valued longtime members of Steve Earle’s band the Dukes, the musical and marital twosome make inspired albums of their own emotionally vivid, deeply humanistic songs. The duo’s fourth set of original compositions is the appropriately titled "No Time for Love Songs."
With the new album, the duo celebrates the tenth anniversary of their partnership and continues their creative journey. Prior to launching their recording partnership, Chris played with Son Volt, Jack Ingram and others, while Eleanor lent her talents to projects by Regina Spektor and Angus & Julia Stone. Their first collaborative effort, "Birds Fly South," won widespread critical acclaim, with Esquire designating the Mastersons as one of the "Bands You Need To Know Right Now."

King and Prince 29
Part 28
“Summer will be upon us soon”, Nancy said while scribbling away on some parchment.
“Mhm, that means a new crop of squires, ready to start their trials”, Eddie was lounging on a chaise, playing with a mess of thread in his hands.
“You know I can’t give Lucas any special treatment. Not because he’s my brother’s friend, nor your paramour’s protege.”
Eddie turned over onto his stomach to look at Nancy sitting at her desk, his eyes sparkling. It wasn’t quite the reaction she had been expecting. He had heard her, right? That she wouldn’t be giving anyone preferential treatment? She never did.
“You think Steve and I could be paramours?”
“....I swear you only hear half the words I say.”
“I heard you loud and clear. I just don’t think Lucas will need a leg up or anything like that. But your thoughts on me and the little prince would be news to me.”
Nancy let out a breath. “I don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong with you pursuing him.”
“The ‘but’ is so loud you might want to get your intestines checked.”
“But, you should know you’re playing with fire. Even if he’s been unofficially disowned, he’s still a prince. One whose family has wished for our destruction. If this goes to your favor and you are wed, have you thought about what your subjects might say?”
Eddie stopped fiddling with the thread. “I have. And I’ve decided that while I am open to hearing concerns, I’m not giving up on him. Anyone with a problem with that can take it up with me personally.”
“Hm. I thought as much. Just don’t, you know, burn the whole kingdom just for him.”
“Do you really think I’m that far gone?”, Eddie asked.
Nancy thought about how she’d seen Eddie around the training grounds more and more and how that had everything to do with Steve taking Lucas under his wing. And because of that, she deigned not to answer.
-----------------------
“You really think I’ll pass?”, Lucas asked, panting as he put his wooden sword away.
Steve was wiping the sweat off of himself with a cloth. “I think you’re one of the most passionate kids I’ve ever met. You’re on your way to mastering swordplay and archery. You’re going to ace this.”
“So like, are you planning on actually marrying Eddie?”, Lucas asked.
He wasn’t the only one curious. Everyone in the castle was abuzz with this new development and of course, the news began to move from within the walls to outside of it. The gossip traveled and everyone had their own spin on it. The king was courting a young man was what everyone got right. But as to the identity of that man, people couldn’t quite agree.
He was a prince, no a duke, no an earl, no he wasn’t from the aristocracy at all. He was in his thirties, no his twenties, no he was only fifteen because he was around the children of the castle often, no he was, but as a mentor so he had to be at least a few years older. He was very handsome, no he just looked okay, well their immortal king had written so much about his appearance so he must be ethereal. The king had written a few, no many, no an entire tome’s worth of letters courting him.
“Either way, can you imagine it? A royal wedding?”
Jason could hear some woman prattle on with his mother while he wrapped up a few chops in the back.
“I can’t even imagine what that would look like”, his mother replied. “King Edward has never done anything like this.”
“He must truly be in love. And if the rumors are true, he’s a real bonafide prince.”
Jason slammed the meat down onto the counter, jolting them both. “Has anyone figured out which kingdom?”
“Oh, this is all just gossip, Jason”, Mrs. Carver said. “If His Majesty is truly courting with foreign royalty, it would be for the good of our kingdom.”
“Well how do we know it isn’t completely selfish? How do we know he didn’t just snatch someone up?”
“He wouldn’t do that.”
“Or how about this? If they are a prince? How do we know his intentions are pure?”
“Oh you’re being paranoid”, his mother said placatingly. She muttered something to the lady about him recently breaking things off with a lover and the woman nodded sagely before grabbing her order and leaving.
But it wasn’t as simple as all that to Jason. He alone, knew the truth of what was happening and yet he had to hear misinformation everywhere he went. In his own family shop, on the streets, even in the tavern. The very place he had met Steve one night and while he was trying to drink himself to numbness, he had to listen to a group of guys sitting at a table, trading rumors about Steve’s true identity.
“He’s not what you think he is”, Jason finally spoke up, pushing his drink away.
“Huh?”
“What’s the butcher’s boy going on about?”
“The man our king is trying to tie himself to”, Jason clarified as he stood up from the bar and walked over to their table. “He’s a lying snake.”
“And what do you know about him?”
“I know him too well. Met him right here, even talked to him at this very table. He looked sweet. Until he wasn’t.”
The men scoffed and that riled up Jason enough to raise his voice, garnering the attention of the other patrons. Even the musician in the corner stopped playing. Emboldened, Jason continued.
“His name is Steve. And he would come into town. He would, he would spread his legs and break hearts and damn those he left behind.”
“Ahh, he’s just a spurned lover”, someone commented.
“That’s how it was at first!”, Jason quickly regained control of the conversation. “I thought I was just another person on his trail, to be left behind when he moved to the next town because that’s what he led me to believe. That he was just a traveler. But then he gave me this letter. This letter told me everything and now I know the truth.”
When no one interrupted him, he kept going, telling them of the kingdom that Steve had come from. That he was a Harrington, someone who had actively pushed against their borders and that wasn’t enough for them. People began to leave, not wanting to hear the drunken ravings of a man who had been dumped.
But the seed had already been planted. And the longer this courtship went on without an official decree, the more doubt began to spread among the people. The story turned from their wise king finally giving his heart to someone, to an invasion in the form of a seduction.
“Why else would he be going after our king, huh?”, Jason posed the question to a crowd that gathered outside the butcher shop. “He was literally walking these streets, stringing people along, he could’ve had anyone. But he goes for the most powerful man in the country. Nothing he ever did made sense to me but when I got this-” He brandished the letter, crumpled but still legible.
“This made everything so much more clear. Within those walls”, he pointed to the castle, “Is an imminent danger. Today it’s just him, tomorrow it could be his whole army at our doorstep.”
-------------------------
Eddie was pretty good at keeping his ear to the ground. So he could tell almost immediately when the rumor mill began to turn against him and Steve. He hadn’t wanted to make an official announcement and thus thrust Steve back into the royal spotlight too soon. But what was happening was getting too much to ignore.
He knew of it, even before his council brought it to his attention. He was pacing about in a sitting room, Robin, Nancy, and Jeff there as he figured out how to bring it up to Steve, and how to move forward. Of course, as if summoned, Steve pushed the doors open and stomped in.
“Have you heard what they’re saying about you?!”
“I have”, Eddie said. “As well as what they’re saying about you.”
“It can’t stand. He can’t talk about his king that way. That isn’t why I gave him that letter!”
Eddie came over to Steve, clutching his hands. “Has anyone ever told you how beautiful you look with the fire of righteousness blazing in your eyes?”
Steve would have been embarrassed to say how fast he melted if it wasn’t for the fact that it came with how warm Eddie’s gaze was on him. It almost made him forget why he had come in here in the first place.
“As I was s-saying, you can’t let this stand. You can’t keep letting him spread these lies about you.”
“What lies? You came from another country with the sole intent to seduce your way to my throne”, Eddie teased, bringing Steve’s knuckles up to his lips.
“Is that how it happened? Because I remember carting a package and dumping it in the dungeon”, Nancy piped up.
“I remember you handing him off to me with little regard”, Robin added.
Jeff started, “And I seem to recall-”
“Now those are lies and slander that I will not allow”, Eddie said. “I have always treasured you above all, my sweet.”
Steve rolled his eyes. “Don’t try and change our story, I was there for it. I will say, I think I’m getting to my favorite part…”
“Hey your faces need to be six inches apart at all times”, Jeff reminded.
“We are such good chaperones”, Robin shook her head.
“Eddie, let me do this for you”, Steve said, taking a step back from him.
Eddie’s brow raised. “Do what?”
“Fight for your honor.”
