Lady of The Nile walks on Water
Yes, I have walked on water
Did you not see? The trail I left behind?
It is inked in blood, footprints of the Nile,
A wayward daughter, child of mine,
Did you not see who turned
the blue river into ruby wine ?
Yes, it was I, lady of the Nile.
Lady of The Nile walks on Water by Nisa

Mapping/Routing the CTA
I'm still blaming @copperbadge for all of this.
As I am taking this trip in my mind, I have chosen to ignore a lot of the challenges the physical world brings. Like road construction, neighborhood block parties, day of the week, trains that only stop there once a day in the opposite direction, buses that only run a few hours a day, the actual passage of time, etc. This trip should not be attempted in the Real World – every route and stop apparently still exists, but you might need to wait hours if not days for the correct bus/train. For the Extra Bonus Points of LOLs and Nostalgia I have included sections of the Metra (Milwaukee Districts North and West and South Shore Electric), Big Bus Tours, and the Water Taxi.
Again, do NOT try this route in Real Time. Yet. My ADHD brain may or may not get back to you in a few days on how long it would actually take just so we can all laugh at the idea of getting lost and being forced to sneak around and spend the night in a mattress store at the Golf Mill Shopping Center or whatever. (Actually, that’s a hell of a meetcute. I… I might need to go write something now….)
Starting at Linden.
Ride Purple Line to Howard. Transfer to Yellow Line.
Ride Yellow Line to Dempster-Skokie. (Resist the muscle memory to catch the bus all the way to Deerfield. I really hated that commute.)
Bus to Morton Grove Metra.
Ride (MN) Metra to Mayfair.
Walk to Blue Line (Montrose). Ride Blue Line to O’Hare.
Stretch legs and bathroom break. Refill water bottle. Refuel if needed.
Ride Blue Line back to Harlem. Bus to Fullerton.
Walk around my old neighborhood. (I think the walk to Caputo’s is worth it, but maybe don’t buy any fresh squid if you’re getting back on the train.)
Ride (MW) Metra from Mont Clare to Grand/Cicero.
Bus to Blue Line (Montrose). Ride Blue Line to Forest Park.
Bus to Green Line (Harlem/Lake). Ride Green Line to Cottage Grove. (I’m stopping along the way to visit family, get something to eat, and maybe nap while charging my electronics.)
Bus to Green Line (Ashland/63rd). Ride Green Line to Garfield.
Walk to Red Line (Garfield). Ride Red Line to Dan Ryan. Hang Around Like An Idiot. Ride Red Line to Lake.
Transfer to Pink Line. Ride Pink Line to Cermak/54th, then back to Cicero.
Bus to Midway. (Unhydrate. Rehydrate.) Ride Orange Line to Halsted. Walk to River. Or I think there’s a bus that’s just not showing up at the moment.
Water Taxi to West Loop.
Walk to Willis Tower. (Bonus point for each instance of calling it Sears Tower.) Tour Bus to Museum Campus.
Metra Electric back to Millennium Park Station.
Walk to Washington/Wabash. Ride Brown Line to Kimball.
Ride Brown Line back to State/Lake. (Stop at Fullerton if it’s morning. Walk to Orange and order the pancake flight and watch them fresh squeeze your citrus juice. Walk to Molly’s if you like cupcakes. Double Extra Bonus points if you pointedly reminisce about the Meatloaf Bakery when you pass where it was. Crash a wedding at my old apartment building if you’re really bored. I really miss my neighborhood at the moment.)
Transfer to Red Line. Ride Red Line to Howard. (I’m going to stop at Granville for the Memories. This was my first address in Chicago – even if I technically wasn’t supposed to receive mail because I wasn’t on the lease.)
#this is not the route my protagonists will travel in my new novel#but it's kinda close#i really miss chicago#but it's just like so far from my ocean#and the lake is NOT the same#i also really miss my ocean#I think some novel drafting is in my future#writing is hard yo#please feel free to take the take the writing prompt and run with it#new trope: there were only 27 beds

Joe Rosenthal Allen Ginsberg at Lawrence Ferlinghetti's "City Lights" Bookstore, North Beach, San Francisco 1959
I walked on the banks of the tincan banana dock and sat down under the huge shade of a Southern Pacific locomotive to look for the sunset over the box house hills and cry.
Jack Kerouac sat beside me on a busted rusty iron pole, companion, we thought the same thoughts of the soul, bleak and blue and sad-eyed, surrounded by the gnarled steel roots of trees of machinery.
The only water on the river mirrored the red sky, sun sank on top of final Frisco peaks, no fish in that stream, no hermit in those mounts, just ourselves rheumy-eyed and hung-over like old bums on the riverbank, tired and wily.
Look at the Sunflower, he said, there was a dead gray shadow against the sky, big as a man, sitting dry on top of a pile of ancient sawdust--
--I rushed up enchanted--it was my first sunflower, memories of Blake--my visions--Harlem
and Hells of the Eastern rivers, bridges clanking Joes greasy Sandwiches, dead baby carriages, black treadless tires forgotten and unretreaded, the poem of the riverbank, condoms & pots, steel knives, nothing stainless, only the dank muck and the razor-sharp artifacts passing into the past--
and the gray Sunflower poised against the sunset, crackly bleak and dusty with the smut and smog and smoke of olden locomotives in its eye--
corolla of bleary spikes pushed down and broken like a battered crown, seeds fallen out of its face, soon-to-be-toothless mouth of sunny air, sunrays obliterated on its hairy head like a dried wire spiderweb,
leaves stuck out like arms out of the stem, gestures from the sawdust root, broke pieces of plaster fallen out of the black twigs, a dead fly in its ear,
Unholy battered old thing you were, my sunflower O my soul, I loved you then!
The grime was no man's grime but death and human locomotives,
all that dress of dust, that veil of darkened railroad skin, that smog of cheek, that eyelid of black mis'ry, that sooty hand or phallus or protuberance of artificial worse-than-dirt--industrial--modern--all that civilization spotting your crazy golden crown--
and those blear thoughts of death and dusty loveless eyes and ends and withered roots below, in the home-pile of sand and sawdust, rubber dollar bills, skin of machinery, the guts and innards of the weeping coughing car, the empty lonely tincans with their rusty tongues alack, what more could I name, the smoked ashes of some cock cigar, the cunts of wheelbarrows and the milky breasts of cars, wornout asses out of chairs & sphincters of dynamos--all these
entangled in your mummied roots--and you standing before me in the sunset, all your glory in your form!
A perfect beauty of a sunflower! a perfect excellent lovely sunflower existence! a sweet natural eye to the new hip moon, woke up alive and excited grasping in the sunset shadow sunrise golden monthly breeze!
How many flies buzzed round you innocent of your grime, while you cursed the heavens of your railroad and your flower soul?
Poor dead flower? when did you forget you were a flower? when did you look at your skin and decide you were an impotent dirty old locomotive? the ghost of a locomotive? the specter and shade of a once powerful mad American locomotive?
You were never no locomotive, Sunflower, you were a sunflower!
And you Locomotive, you are a locomotive, forget me not!
So I grabbed up the skeleton thick sunflower and stuck it at my side like a scepter,
and deliver my sermon to my soul, and Jack's soul too, and anyone who'll listen,
--We're not our skin of grime, we're not our dread bleak dusty imageless locomotive, we're all golden sunflowers inside, blessed by our own seed & hairy naked accomplishment-bodies growing into mad black formal sunflowers in the sunset, spied on by our eyes under the shadow of the mad locomotive riverbank sunset Frisco hilly tincan evening sitdown vision.
-- Allen Ginsberg, "Sunflower Sutra" 1955

Run Your Mouth (David Jacobs x Fem Brooklyn Newsie)
Request: While David and Jack are in Brooklyn trying to convince Spot to join the strike, Davey sees a girl in the corner of his eye.
Davey’s POV
“So is this Spot Colon a big deal?”
“Just wait and see.”
It’s funny how fast a person’s life can change in a day. First I’m selling newspapers, the next I’m being taken to Brooklyn. I’ll admit I’m really anxious to be in such an unfamiliar atmosphere, especially with the tough Brooklyn newsies watching our every move.
“Where is he?” I whisper to Jack, trying to stick as close a possible. Meanwhile Boots keeps looking around with a laid-back smile.
“Be patient,” the cowboy mutters.
“Well if it ain’t Jack be nimble, Jack be quick.”
We both look up and literally spot the one I think is the Brooklyn leader named Spot Colon.
“See you moved up in the woild, Spot. Got a river view and everything,” Jack comments.
‘Spot’ hops down and I see he’s hold’n a cane. Him and Jack do tha spit handshake and grin at each odda.
“Is that Jack?” A distant voice asks. It’s a girl’s voice.
Just then, in the corner of my eye I see a tall figure step out from behind the crates, and my heart stops. If it weren’t for her voice, one might say she’s a boy from this distance. A few strands of blonde hair poke out from under her newsie cap. She’s wearing faded gray overalls and a messy, oversized blue shirt that’s left with two undone buttons, leaving part of her chest exposed. As the Brooklyn newsie steps closer, it only highlights her feminine charms even more. It’s the eyes. Her eyes. Those ocean blue eyes that I’m drowning in- Get a grip, David!
She twirls a walking stick as she struts forward to meet us, appearing to size me up. “Who’s the geek?”
“I, uh-” For once in my life I dunno what to say!
Lucy’s POV
Spot likes to keep things simple in Brooklyn. We’s the toughest there is, therefore there’s little threats. But that also means we don’t get too much action ‘round here. I thought the highlight-a the week was gonna be when Bucky threw Scab into the river, but I was proved wrong when Jack came by for a visit. I’s one-a Spot’s lookouts, so I’d overhoid earlier about ‘Hattan’s strike business. I just never believed they’d have the guts to come here and ask for help. Jack’s here, and he brought company. I recognized Boots immediately, but then see an unfamiliar face. A cute one at that. I know Spot will club me for think’n like a lovestruck dumb blonde, but just ‘cause I’s a Brooklyn newsie don’t mean my goilish instincts are shut off.
Now the guy keeps look’n at me, his piercing blue eyes analyzing me as if I’m a museum art piece.
“Who’s the geek?” I ask, both curious and as a flirt.
“I, uh-” the blue-eyed newsie stutters.
I can tell Spot already knows what game I’m playing ‘cause he keeps try’n to block me from get’n closer.
“Jack, tell the mouth he’s got no chance with Pickens. You know the rules.”
Cowboy looks back and forth between us, then accepts defeat as he pulls the ‘mouth’ away.
Now Spot turn to Boots. “How’s it hang’n?”
“Got some nice shooters for ya!”
Boots hands him a few smooth rocks. Spot then takes out a slingshot, loads it, and aims at a nearby bottle. “So Jackie boy, I’s been hear’n things from little boidies.” He shoots, caus’n the bottle ta shatter poifectly. “Things from Queens… Harlem. They been chirp’n in my ear, tell’n me Jackie’s boys are plann’n on a strike.”
“Well, we are,” the new guy says assurin’ly.
I’ll give him credit for spunk. Most folks don’t even got the cahonies to look at Spot, let alone talk back to him.
“Oh yeah? Yeah?” Spot gets up in his face, try’n to intimidate him. “Whis is this Jackie boy, some kind-a walk’n mouth?”
Jack looks out from under his cowboy hat. “Yeah, it’s a mouth with brains. And you’ll here what he’s gotta say.”
Spot considers this, then agrees by lean’n against the crates and wait’n for their explanation. “So Jack, are all the odda boroughs pitch’n in?”
“They is wait’n for what Spot Colon is do’n.”
Now the new guy jumps in. “They say that Spot Colon- you’re the key. That Spot Colon’s the most famous newsie in all of New York. And if you join, we’ll be unstoppable. You just gotta join!”
Spot seems to think it over, and I can tell it’s really got him think’n.
“You were right, Jack. Brains. But I got brains too. How do I know you got what it takes? How do I know you’s won’t go run’n the first time some goon comes at ya with a club?”
“‘Cause I’m tell’n ya, Spot.” Jack replies.
Spot sighs impatiently and begins to walk away towards me. “That ain’t good enough, Jackie boy. You gotta show me.”
That’s Brooklyn talk for “no,” which don’t seem to please Jack. He nods respectfully and gestures for the two boys to follow him out. Deep down, I’d be lying if I said I weren’t disappointed to see the mouth go. He must feel the same, because he keeps looking back at me and is hesitant to follow. So much that Jack has to grab his arm to lead him outta his trance.
“Sorry, Davey. Rules state that goils don’t get involved with business.”
Davey? Ah, so the geek has a name.
I saunter forward and go to stand next to Davey, give’n Spot a sassy look. “Who says this is business? I’m go’n for a walk, and you can’t say no.”
Just like that, the King ‘o Brooklyn is reduced to a speechless mess. “Wait- You can’t- You seriously- Him?”
I laugh at his scatterbrained speech and point to Davey. “Yes, him. Be back in an hour!”
Quickly, I grab Davey’s arm and pull him through the crowd-a Brooklyn newsies towards the bridge. Once we’s alone, I relax and set a leisurely stride. All the while Davey looks as if he’s seen a ghost.
“You ok?”
He nods slowly, still stare’n at me.
“Can ya still talk?”
Davey flashes a noivous smile and licks his lips. “Hehe, maybe. Depends if you’re gonna stop being too gorgeous to look at.”
His woids make me suspect a joke, but his face don’t say that. He ain’t kidding.
“You… think I’s gorgeous?” I tilt my head in consideration. “Yeah, just like every guy in Brooklyn. Look’n at me like a piece-a meat.”
This seems to erase all-a Davey’s worried nerves, because he’s got a different look on his face. One more determined, like a debate leader.
“I don’t think you are. Why would they think that?”
I scoff. “Everyone does! Like I’s just a dumb blonde who don’t know squat! Just anodda pretty face. No offense Davey, but I was hope’n you’d be a break from those guys.”
Davey halts in his tracks and grips my shoulders, and I have to resist my fight response to punch his adorable face.
“You’re not just a pretty face. I don’t know much about Brooklyn, but I do know that Spot Colon is a big deal. I admire how you’re confident enough to dominate over him, but don’t have an intense ego. If you’d like, I wouldn’t mind having an intellectual conversation with you instead of gushing about how you’re making my heart melt.”
He takes a deep breath, have’n just spilled his guts to me. This, in turn, has left me speechless. Never once has any newsie in Brooklyn been smart enough to carry on an educated conversation odda than what’s in the papes. Heck, some of ‘em can’t even read!
Davey must take my silence as rejection, because he’s get’n noivous again.
“Sorry if I upset you. I… have the tendency to talk too much.”
“I like that.”
His eyes go crazy, almost try’n to double think what I said. “Y-You like it? It’s not annoying?”
A smile grows on my face and I nod. “Go right ahead, Davey. Run your mouth. I don’t mind.”
Something gets triggered in Davey, because he immediately starts lecturing about social issues. Part of it I understand, but some is a bit too complicated.
“Wait, wait. How do you know all this?”
Davey gets a cute blush on his cheeks. “I used to be in school, before my father had an accident that took him out of work. Now I gotta sell papers to earn money.”
“Oh. I’m sorry to hear that. You got family, yeah?”
“Yeah. Do you?” Davey rethinks this and quickly adds: “I’m sorry, that’s a personal subject. We don’t have to talk about it.”
“No no, ‘s alright. It ain’t new to me. I never knew my folks. They threw me in an orphanage as soon as I could talk, and I’s been a newsie since I was five. So, you was say’n ‘bout the problem of over-achieving?”
Davey gets back on track and continues. “I believe that success should be celebrated but to an extent. We shouldn't let our praise go to politicians and business men's heads. After all, living a healthy and free life is its own reward. What's wrong is that our economy has made it appear that being rich and important is better than being content with the little things in life.”
“Ain’t that a fact,” I scoff. “They don’t know what real wealth is.”
“By the way, we never got a real introduction.” Davey stands up straight and holds out a hand to shake. “My real name is David. David Jacobs. I- I know we literally just met, but- Are you familiar with the story of Romeo and Juliet?”
The name washes over me. “No?”
Davey shakes his head and tries again. “There’s something called love at first sight. Maybe you'd know about that, Miss…? Gosh, I don’t even know your real name!” He chuckles. “Some romantic I must be. They call you Pickens, right?”
His innocent smile makes me soften up, bringing a hand over to grip his. “It’s Lucy. My real name’s Lucy, in case you wanted to know.”
“I- I did want to know. But I gotta ask- why me? You didn’t even know me, yet you’re so open to talking with me.”
“Because-a you, genius. You’s actually got brains in that pretty head-a yours, unlike most guys here who got cement for brains. And if at any time you’s ever feel like talk’n, come visit me. Or bedda yet, ya could ask me out?”
Davey stops dead in his tracks, blabbering on like a drunk squirrel. “Ask you- Like- Like a date?”
“No, like an interview. Of course a date, genius!” I laugh.
Davey still ain’t convinced. “But I’m me. I’m not like most guys-”
“All the more reason I’d luv to go on a date with you, David Jacobs.”
He laughs out loud and foist I think he’s make’n fun-a me, but then he gets a bewildered look on his face. “I was just thinking earlier about how fast a person’s life can change in a day. Now my life’s changed even more!” Davey smiles and gently takes my hand. “Thank you, Lucy! Thank you so much! I- I’ll be good to you, I promise. And you can choose the date location, of course.”
“Always a gentleman, I see.” Look’n into his kind eyes, I lean up and give a quick peck to his cheek. “Thanks, Davey.”
By now Jack and Boots have caught up, both give’n us funny looks.
“Hey, um, David. Spot instructed very clearly for us to tell you to send Pickens back. I suggest you do it before something intense happens.”
Davey nods in response, still dazed by my kiss, then turns to me to give me a quick handshake. “See you soon?”
“I’ll count the minutes, genius.”

STARTER FOR: @saulweissberg LOCATION: terry & micah’s residence / white plains, ny DATE: 22 sep / evening
Swinging the door open and flicking the light switch to the side, a cursory glance revealed that their house was just how they’d left it. Their mother had paid the weekly visit to keep things in order, and she kept the rooms largely unchanged. No doubt that they’d find some select spices missing in their pantry, but that was par for the course. They moved through their home with a practiced ease and quietly gestured for Saul to come inside.
As they passed the coffee table, they slid an index finger along the spine of the May issue of the Architectural Review magazine tucked away inside the wicker basket, brushing away the thin layer of dust. Four months, then, since they had changed their permanent address, routing all communications to a less flashy ZIP code. Four months since they’d traded this suburban house with a huge expanse of lawn, with the evergreen trees and weeping willows, for the log cabin of Forest Lake nestled just beside a forest clearing.
Without Micah, had their world always been this quiet?
“You should make yourself comfortable,” Terry cut through the silence first, gesturing towards the couch, “I’ll get us some drinks.”
It was only polite. She had been the one to invite him into her and Micah’s home, after all. It was an internal debate that had gone on for longer than they expected, close to the entirety of the car ride in which neither Terry nor Saul had much to say. They had wanted to turn back their car at several points—as they funneled through the Brooklyn streets, crossed the river of Brooklyn Bridge, passed by the towering structures of Columbia and Barnard, traversed the Harlem River, and wound their way up to the I-87. Still, they pushed on, and Saul hadn’t made a move to protest, either, and soon the Brooklyn brownstones were replaced with the single-family homes with long driveways and lush lawns.
White Plains had been intended to be the middle ground, possessing neither the roughness of the cramped Harlem tenement unit that Terry had once called home nor the lushness of the country associated with Saul’s New England roots. The perfect place for Micah to see and feel the qualities of an urban village for himself, a balance—but their attempt had still failed. Always, for twenty-nine years, it had failed.
They lit the lamp next to the fireplace, casting the room with a soft, warm glow, before making their way to the dining table. Finding the same layer of dust settling on the glasses on the bar tray, they quietly took out the glasses and washed them at the sink. They placed them back, carrying the whole tray towards the coffee table in the living room.
They sat on the opposite end of the couch, a respectable distance. However well they’d gotten along these past few weeks—after the disastrous outing in July, after the frantic phone calls in August—it was clear the distance remained. No longer lovers. No longer friends.
No longer anything at all, really, but parents longing for their son to come home.
More than an hour had passed since the dinner. They still could not make mention of Micah, even as he clouded their thoughts, demanding to be seen and felt. They filled their glass with whiskey, watching as the amber liquid took up the concave shape of the glass, wondering if Saul would choose the same. Their bar tray was only a tad more stocked than the one they’d had in Forest Lake—whiskey, bourbon, scotch—though it was just as untouched. “What’s this I hear about a luncheon?” And when they broke the silence, it wasn’t to do with him at all. They still couldn’t bring themselves to go there. Could not bring the light back in just yet, lest it arrived as a polished spear that pierced through them. “I saw it on The Blue News.”

For the character questions: 2 and 5 for ortega <3
2. Favorite canon thing about this character?
god all of it. im obsessed with them. if i had to pick one thing? the utter terminal death spiral devotion. the absolute refusal to let go or give up or reconsider. this is what they are to me vvvv
5. What's the first song that comes to mind when you think about them?
OH MY GOD OK. well i have a whole ortega playlist but the first one i thought of was Harlem River Blues by Justin Earle. its a bouncy fun country song and it is about drowning yourself in a river. It specifically refers to the singer's mother and "Tell my mama I love her, tell my father I tried". god. its a devastating song
LIKE COME ON. ORTEGA I NEED TO HIT YOU WITH MY CAR.
from the writer annotation. the lethal kind of conviction that moves mountains, thats LITERALLY ortega. also i have to shout Mama Tried by Merle Haggard which retains the first spot on the playlist and makes me wanna cry if i think about it too hard.

The curse
#1 #2 #3 #4 #5
#6
"And then she just threw me my sword and claimed she isn't our enemy..."
Leo finished his brief report as they jumped onto the unfinished skyscraper to get a better view to find Donnie. He shook his head, still incredulous about what had happened. The strange feeling that had taken possession of him when they both looked into each other's eyes still had an effect. Something was going on, but he couldn't grasp the feeling. It kept slipping away from him like a dream you tried to remember but couldn't.
"Leo...?" Raph gave him an odd look, and the blue one realized he had paused. He shook his head and concentrated again
"Well, I think she'll still flee towards the bridge. Any purple light that way, Mikey?"
Raph left it at that, right now it was more important to help Donnie. But he noted that Leo hadn't told them everything - and this time he'll listen to his intuition! Only... later.
"I don't see anything..." Mikey said, disappointed, as the three peered over Harlem and a branch of the Harlem River. The town was relatively quiet at this hour and no sign of Donnie or the thief anywhere.
“This top giant DUMDUM! Why is he doing this idiotic solo effort?! I'll kick his ass if anything happens to him!" outraged Leo to put his concern aside, not realizing how contradictory his comment was.
Meanwhile, Mikey's concern grew. They weren't teenagers anymore, but he will forever be the most sensitive of the four brothers.
In his mind's eye, he saw the thief grabbing his Nunchaku out of the air and throwing it further. Without effort. She was so fast! And so his Nunchaku flew on at a speed that took his breath away and made one of his nightmares come true: he attacked his brother and couldn't do anything about it!
After all, he had been fast enough not to smash Raph into anything but keep him in the air until the speed dropped, and he was able to free himself without destroying Mikey's weapon. Small consolation, because they had now lost the thief and no one knew what kind of devilry she had in store for Donnie. Mikey was filled with worry.
Then again… he thought. She gave Leo his sword back. Didn't fight him. Didn't hurt him. Still, he wanted to find Donnie as soon as possible - he knew about his brother's stubbornness and could only hope that it didn't get him into anything worse. In the end, no stolen thing from the museum was worth the life of his brother.
A strong impulse to order help built up in him.
"Maybe we should ask April and Casey for help...?"
Raph and Leo looked at him. Leo nodded slightly and Raph raised his left arm. The communicator flashed neon.
"April, Casey? Raph here. Can you hear me?"
April replied immediately. At the time, she was often up at night to do things for her job as a journalist that were left unattended during the day.
“Yay, Raph! What's up? Any trouble you want me to fix for you?" they heard her laugh.
“Yeah… um. April, indeed we... here, listen: we are here at 2nd Ave and E122nd Street and…”
And once again Raphael was robbed of his words that night. A shock wave went through the building on which they had moved into their vantage point on the 20th floor. It was a VERY strange feeling. A blast from inside the skyscraper that disregards the physics of walls, causing them to tremble without draining energy. The three turtles held onto the cold steel and stared at each other.
"Guys?!" April's voice was on instant alert. "What was that? GUYS?"
But no one answered her, the brothers stared over their heads where the wave lost towards the sky.
She glowed purple and white lines accompanied her.
Leonardo, Raphael and Michelangelo now knew where Donatello was. They looked at each other and felt, in sheer horror, the skyscraper begins to give way. #7
