Au where instead of hunting the gaang down, Zuko goes to them like “I will help train the Avatar in firebending.” And gives the (true) excuse that he has to wait until after he learns earth. So he’s there from book one, following the gaang and just getting to know them. He had originally planned to betray them, but… they’re so welcoming, and they get into so many shenanigans and save so many people and…well, he can wait a couple more weeks to betray them. (He never does)

when I was like 17 I was at a party and this dude - complete stranger, in a flannel and a cap - approached me and asked if I liked Lana del Rey. I said yeah why. he said “cool. all my lesbian friends like lana del rey. cheers” and went on with his evening. I don’t present lesbian, except when I’m talking. Those were the only words we ever exchanged. Clocked my ass. I think about him often.

Stonn x T'Pring and Sybok x Angel are the only SNW ships I like. Honestly, with the way the show is written, I'm rooting more for the Gorn than the Enterprise at this point.
With how that show's writing Vulcans I'm like 70% sure they're gonna make Stonn a bad guy or make T'Pring cheat on Spock so their relationship ends with "They both cheated!" or so that Christine can comfort Spock as if he hasn't been cheating on T'Pring pretty much the entire time he's been on screen. I watched a 'short trek' I think they're called? Because I heard T'Pring was in it but it was REAAALLY bad like humor I might have laughed at in middle school...anyway T'Pring was only in it so they could make a joke where the premise was "T'Pring keeps breaking up with Spock because she falls in love with other people and Spock is SOO sad about it" and I was like Hey. Are you even WATCHING your show???? You're taking potshots at the WRONG CHARACTER. Like, even if you wanna make that joke - Christine'd make more sense because Christine and Spock ARE actually 'keeping it casual' and Christine DOES actually date around whereas T'Pring is committed to Spock in SNW and trying at every turn to make their relationship work. It still wouldn't be funny if the girl constantly breaking up with Spock was Christine but having it be T'Pring literally doesn't even make sense. You can say "it's just a funny little joke" (as people say about a lot of SNW'S issues) but T'Pring is a female character who's been viciously maligned for YEARS and if their 'jokes' or 'comedy' come at the expense of their characters or the message of ultimate togetherness and hope in the galaxy then I don't find it funny. SNW isn't supposed to be a comedy I don't know why they keep trying to be 'funny' at the price of being earnest. This isn't a marvel movie. The pro-eugenics trial, killing the disabled character, killing the chronically ill character (and framing this as a beautiful relief), 'being disabled is worse than death' messaging, turning the Gorn into horror movie killer monsters (especially when they could have just made up another species), the bioessentialism, constantly maligning Vulcans as racist bullies (with Spock's half Human blood saving him) <- Which I hate ESPECIALLY when Spock has always been a symbol for mixed people in which he struggled equally with feeling belonging in BOTH cultures whereas in SNW it feels like "If he could only be released from Vulcan's evil clutches he could be happy!" + The laziness of cheating being a plot point in so many main characters' romance stories so far. [La'an wants to be with Kirk but that'd be cheating, Spock is cheating on T'Pring with Christine, Pike sleeps with another woman in 'Lift Us Where Suffering' despite having a girlfriend <- They COULD be open but I don't think this is explained. That's Five or Six characters involved in potential cheating and more if you count M'Benga wink-nudging Spock and Christine's relationship when he most likely knows Spock is engaged to T'Pring.] I just have no faith in SNW. It doesn't feel earnest, and it doesn't feel kind and I don't want to watch a show where they'll sacrifice someone's character at any time for an ultimately meanspirited joke.

If that is Billy Kaplan in Agatha All Along, they really said do not even try to introduce his love interest from the comics, aka Hulkling, while also write him with gay stereotypes in mind and have him be played by a non-Jewish actor (like mother like son I guess).

always found this little parallel between how scott speaks about buddy cole vs danny husk fascinating:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(top quote is from this 2017 vulture interview, bottom quote is from paul myers' 2018 book "one dumb guy")
'he's smarter than me. braver than me. he's better than me'' vs ''danny may not be the smartest or the bravest but he's a very decent man''
Tumblr media Tumblr media
#on its own this is a cool (probably unintentional) echo of how scott talks about two of his biggest characters#but of course being the buddy-cole-documentary person and the only person who's mentioned scott's ptsdiva podcast to him upon first meeting#(true fact he hadn't heard anyone mention that podcast since it finished releasing and that was a big part of my first impression)#i'm so excited to hopefully dig into the deeper implications of this#bc throughout scott's career he's used buddy as a way to process his thoughts on a variety of topics and to speak his mind#BUT. after he recovered from his cancer. he didn't immediately launch another buddy cole side project like he did so many times#(and i mean MANY times that's why i have a whole goddamn timeline for buddy cole side projects)#no. after he recovered from cancer he wrote the *danny husk* graphic novel#and there's also an interview from around that time (i can't find it rn but i know i have it bookmarked) where he low key blames buddy cole#for how he's always been typecast as the gay-best-friend. which while buddy cole is proudly a stereotype#he's still the exact opposite of that trope bc he has agency. and that's why scott made so many buddy cole side projects#while he was paying the bills with gay-best-friend roles in the late 90s#so what was it in this case that made him go ''actually i don't want to write from the perspective of someone who's better than me''#and embrace a bit of danny husk energy?#i haven't read his danny husk graphic novel yet but i do have some theories#but idk actively theorizing on here (especially as someone who is friends with scott) feels a bit too far so i'm gonna leave it at this#a cool parallel. an interesting timeline pattern. an indication of one of the questions from my next interview#i would say ''i wonder if anyone else has noticed this'' but come on jess you're the only one who would have seen both these things

yh i think im just too grown to be out with rude people at a nightclub or trying to impress straight men (which is the sole aim of so many clubs) like actually can't be dealing with that and thank GOD they are so incredibly boring and rude they were so angry whenever id engage or make a joke about whatever shite they were chatting like they didn't want the woman to actually speak or have opinions??? I was well aware I wasn't the most attractive you can chat up my friends fine but they're only speaking to them cos their english isn't great and the British girls wouldn't give them time of day. whenever we'd tell a guy to fuck off our visiting friend's were like why were you so mean!!! That man doesn't give a fuck about you what are you on?? he literally just called you a spicy little dangerous latina wtf is wrong with yall. it definitely want a music club it was all cheesy white people music which can be fun if with friends but no one wanted to dance or get drinks just mind numbing 'flirting' with the ugliest boring men you've ever seen. Like im easy I wanna be silly and dance to robbie wlliams or drink cocktails in some vibey bar and chat or get high as fuck to techno music but I refuse to stand around in awkward limbo with a dead atmosphere and no chat with fucking abba playing

sixth day at my new school and i didn't sit alone at lunch today 🥳🥳
#woohoo!!#some girls invited me to sit with them so i did and chatted to them and this other guy#some of them are in my classes!! they were all very nice#honestly i was aiming to just try and fit in with the cishet boys and last week when i heard the rumour i was gay i was kinda freaked out#but i've scoped out the situation and it's not unsafe to be out (as bi. not anyone's business i'm trans)#so i realise it's better to just be open and have better chances of finding the right people than living in fear and squashing myself to--#--fit in with the wrong people. bc if i can't be fully myself around someone then why would i want to be good friends with them??#so yar i'll stick with other queer guys and supportive girls. gay guy/straight girl friendships are stereotypical but it's an ecosystem tha#works in a situation like high school tbh#ooo and i guess he was away today but the guy from a couple of my classes who i think is cute is in that group so added bonus#o and actually unrelated but at recess i went to this queer group thing i was invited to by a teacher last week#(recess is first and lunch is sceond)#i wasn't sure if i was going to go (mostly bc of my 'blend in' mindset) but i'm glad i did!! it was pretty nice#mostly just nice to get an idea of 'safe' people and teachers yaknow#'people and teachers' -- those aren't two mutually exclusive categories of being ajdsgjf but ykwim#and if i didn't go then i probably wouldn't have been in the better mindset for being just myself with everyone at lunch#so wahoo yippee :D#now i just needa keep talking to everyone and putting myself out there a bit more and i'll find the right people :)

not doa related but after the flop that is the borderlands movie (how it even got greenlit in the first place is BEYOND me), I am actually worried for the Duke Nukem movie’s chances, and especially more so after the whole embracer group thing fucking collapsed after their merger deal fell through.
like I get it he is kinda a relic but also you’d be STUPID to NOT capitalise on the rehabilitated image the internet has given him as a bisexual himbo. Like. C’mon!!!

I mean, I feel like it is a natural outcome considering that both the jury and the public seemed to completely forget that Depp v Heard was about defamation, not abuse, but it terrifies me that a lot of people don't realise me what a giant blow to women's freedom of speech this was. She didn't name Depp as an abuser in that article, she said she was a figure representing abuse. The article was co-written with the ACLU and one of the contested lines was written by the editors but she got sued for it. Not the Washington Post, not the ACLU. Which definitely is at least partially because she had the worst lawyers and partially to get back at the ex, but Depp sued the Sun in the UK. He does sue newspapers.
And this is another facet of the larger phenomenon where all those big Western values of liberty and individualism, the personal pursuit of happiness, civil liberties for everyone etc etc etc - is and always have been directed at (white) men, with anyone else being granted some of that as a concession. So many of the lauded works in our literature are about how any person has the right to take charge of their own fate and needs civil liberties to be able to take responsibility for their lives - but at any of those points of time, it was always clear that this does not apply to women.
That since men have decided that women are happier as housewives, they have to be housewives, it had to be made law and there had to be social pressure. Since men have decided that women are better wives if they're uneducated, they barred them from education. That since men had decided that women cannot handle stress, they have to be banned from all sorts of things. And so on. The ideal of self-determination has always been a gendered one. It is about the man as the special crown jewel of creation, the being of infinite value, intelligence and depth, alleviated to personal power by the Enlightenment - and the woman as the NPC beside him. The rib. Remember, the same phase in history when male philosophers and scholars started to push for the idea that every (white) man is created equal, has the same abilities barred by circumstances - that was the same time that othering was more and more transferred from a religious rationale to a scientific one.
And much in the same way, if a man - any man but especially a white man - had lost a defamation trial on such shaky, shaky grounds, men would be taking his side, sharing 1984 quotes or whatever and consider it a dark day for human rights. In fact, think of all the male pundits who will spin outright lies about some celebrity being part of a cannibal paedo cult - and when they're found out to be lying, their fans defend them and say that "well it's their freedom of speech!"
For the public, there is no urgency to defend women's right to freedom of speech, especially when they're talking about gendered issues, because quite classically, they think a woman has nothing meaningful to say and "should be seen, not Heard".

2024 reads / storygraph
The Queens of Innis Lear
slow-moving political fantasy, retelling of the shakespeare tragedy king lear
set in a dying island kingdom, where the prophesy-obsessed king (having neglected the wild magic of the land) must pass on the crown to his three daughters
the elder two hate their father and have been planning their rule for years, and the youngest loves her father and does not want the crown- but does care for the magic of the land
but when the king makes an unforeseen decision, and other kingdoms and spies circle, vying for land and power of their own
earth magic, fate and duty, complicated sister relationships
#The Queens of Innis Lear#aroaessidhe 2024 reads#I thought this was pretty decent. It’s very long though. by the end i was starting to feel the length of it lmao#I don’t really have any familiarity with the original play so I was more approaching it just as any other fantasy book.#It definitely did feel very shakespearean in the plot and how the characters acted though!#I thought the love-and-hate relationship between the sisters was really interesting!#I liked ban in the beginning but by the end he was so annoying. Elia too a bit. didn’t really care about whatever was going on between them#I liked Aefa (the fool’s daughter….also just the inclusion of fools in medieval-esque fantasy)#I did pick this up because I’d heard there was an aroace character. She is one of the 7 or so POV characters#Definitely one of the most interesting characters to me; definitely also plays into some stereotypes.#(cold; brutal; a ‘heart of iron’ - there are other reasons for this; and she’s certainly not a one-dimensional character#(also. i want this kind of aroace character sometimes) but still something to note.#Like I did really like her but also wouldn't necessarily rec people read this for the aroace character (partly just bc of the large cast)#That plus with the fact that she’s described as the darkest skinned (often in tandem with those other descriptors; being brutal; masculine)#is.....hm. a bit uneasy#I’m not sure how well the story handled the Black characters in general tbh but i can’t really make a judgement on that i guess#(I’m hesitant to read books by white authors with Black/biracial MCs regardless; wasn’t aware of this before I started it)#there are couple other bi characters but it’s not SUPER queer otherwise.
