Au where instead of hunting the gaang down, Zuko goes to them like “I will help train the Avatar in firebending.” And gives the (true) excuse that he has to wait until after he learns earth. So he’s there from book one, following the gaang and just getting to know them. He had originally planned to betray them, but… they’re so welcoming, and they get into so many shenanigans and save so many people and…well, he can wait a couple more weeks to betray them. (He never does)

BEING BEST FRIENDS WITH KATARA:
prompt: you two are from the same tribe while traveling with her brother and Aang.
˚˖𓍢ִִ໋🌊˚˖𓍢ִ✧˚.pure love in the friendship as she always makes sure you are okay everyday. Like literally every morning starts off with her checking if you had a nightmare or such.
˚˖𓍢ִִ໋🌊˚˖𓍢ִ✧˚.traveling with the avatar has its perks by being followed by a prince with daddy issues. And through the whole time, she is protective of you. It didn’t matter if you are a non bender or a master at what you are bending. You are still someone who needs to be watched in her eyes.
˚˖𓍢ִִ໋🌊˚˖𓍢ִ✧˚.katara is such a mother and a best friend. But mostly a mother as she gives you advice and guidance in what she knows about what you want to know mostly.
˚˖𓍢ִִ໋🌊˚˖𓍢ִ✧˚.oh you’re hurt? She’s already healing you. Oh you’re hungry? She’s already making Sokka go fishing. Literally babies you. Don’t matter if you are older or younger, you are a victim of mama katara. She’s glad you find her comforting to be around when you need the comfort. She literally smiles feeling your body ease against hers.
˚˖𓍢ִִ໋🌊˚˖𓍢ִ✧˚.you & Katara definitely use to prank Sokka into thinking he peed in his dream😭just to mess with this boy. Katara just water bending water onto sokka’s sleeping bag as you snicker along with your friend.
˚˖𓍢ִִ໋🌊˚˖𓍢ִ✧˚.what if you were a water bender like katara? Oh boyyy she will make sure you know the basics. And if you are a pro like katara already, you two are a deadly water duo in battle. Azula and the fire nation better pray that one of you has the mercy to spare. Because you guys will go psycho mode with the water bending skills.
˚˖𓍢ִִ໋🌊˚˖𓍢ִ✧˚.if you’re a non bender, oh boy. Mama Katara mode goes from 5 to almost 100. Cause you both have been best friends since almost birth. You guys are inseparable. Literally she’s making sure you have no scars every time the battle ends with enemies in the way of Aang’s adventure.
˚˖𓍢ִִ໋🌊˚˖𓍢ִ✧˚.lol when she was going to square up to toph when everyone was tired, you had to just stand there and pull her aside for her to calm down.
˚˖𓍢ִִ໋🌊˚˖𓍢ִ✧˚.lmao the times where you had to drag katara away from basically fighting toph is mostly crazy. When you guys met her, and at the fire nation. When toph threw that rock and it hit katara. You knew shit would be real when katara got her payback. You had to literally chi block both of the girls to make them stop. Yeah toph would be hard to chi block, but you did while jumping.
˚˖𓍢ִִ໋🌊˚˖𓍢ִ✧˚.yk how she got her mother’s necklace. What if she makes you a water tribe friendship necklace or bracelet of sorts. Literally just to prove how your friendship with her is strong and can never be breaking.
˚˖𓍢ִִ໋🌊˚˖𓍢ִ✧˚.yes you two will have girl time together. She loves having you as a best friend who she can share secrets with and just laugh with. It feels nice.
˚˖𓍢ִִ໋🌊˚˖𓍢ִ✧˚.if you were younger than her, man..she is actually a mother to you. Always making sure you hold her hand, making sure you are fed, making sure your clothes are alright. You might want to tell her you can take care of your own self. But she would just ignore it and keep babying you like a true mother.
˚˖𓍢ִִ໋🌊˚˖𓍢ִ✧˚.katara always shows off her water bending to impress you, and it works as you clap with light up eyes. Katara just feels proud to have you around. It’s nice.
˚˖𓍢ִִ໋🌊˚˖𓍢ִ✧˚.katara is a very talented and sweet girl, so if you were to say a water bender. She’s helping you withy your skills. She knows it was hard to do when she first started. But now you two can do spars.
˚˖𓍢ִִ໋🌊˚˖𓍢ִ✧˚.a water/ice slide will be a must for you. You literally half begged katara and she gave in to giving you a water/ice slide. She just liked how happy you looked. The way your eyes light up with your smile. It brought joy to her as well. She even joined you on the slide as she makes it even more exciting with her skills.
˚˖𓍢ִִ໋🌊˚˖𓍢ִ✧˚.when Zuko was trying to get in the gaang, you were ready to trust him because you felt no ill intent from the prince. But as you were going to go to Zuko to welcome him, katara pulls you back and glares at Zuko. Zuko notices that and gave you a soft look of appreciation.
˚˖𓍢ִִ໋🌊˚˖𓍢ִ✧˚.if you’re sick. The gods or avatars better hope you don’t get sick cause katara is being snappy and worried for you. Aang tried to touch your forehead about what was wrong with you, and katara smacks his hand so quick away from you. She’s probably asking him if he washed his hands😭
˚˖𓍢ִִ໋🌊˚˖𓍢ִ✧˚.in the end, you guys are the greatest friends anyone can have. From the same tribe to the whole thing about traveling with the avatar. You care about her, she cares about you.

An au if batman characters including the bat family were in the avatar universe
Jason would be like jet most likelubsteal from the rich give to the poor and would fight against the fire nation would also probably be a mercenary and a nonbender, would have knowledge of how to chi block and would be unofficially a dual sword master and great with hand to hand combat as well as have deadly precision with throwing stars/blades like mai
Dick would be the male version of tai Lee he'd be a master chi blocker light on his feet wouldn't kill definitely would make life for fire nation soldiers difficult if he sees them harassing people of weaker means he'll do something about it with a smile he'd also be your worst nightmare trying to take him in hand to hand combat even if your a bender
Damians weapon of choice would be a katana he'd be quick and deadly you'd think you have him then surprise you don't when he attacks it would feel like it came from the shadows you wouldn't have time to think he'd have deadly precision and hed be light on his feet hed be able to go toe to toe with benders like its nothing and would know how to use there strengths against them hed also have short blades to throw and an array of poisons on hand jusy in case hed have a shit ton of contingency plans
okay Bruce obviously nonbender he'd probably know a bunch of techniques he'd be similar to iroh in terms of knowledge minus the spiritual aspects and the kindness portion as well he'd be similar to asamis dad hirashi sato he'd have all the advanced technology even during aangs time only he wouldn't rely only on thr technology and inventions hed also be a sword master, know how to chi block and how to counter most bending techniques remember how iroh swung those boulders with his chains with just shear strength and howw zuko smashed them with his foot yeah that would be bruce minus the fire bending, he'd also have bombs similar to sokkas stink bombs only they'd knock u out...
Swamp thing would definitely be a water bender like the swamp water benders but way more powerful and he'd love in the same swamp the gang visits and finds out they need to seek out toph I also feel like he'd be an incredibly powerful blood bender
Poison ivy would also be a water bender I actually feel like she'd be similar to swamp thing but also very different she wouldn't live in the swamp but off the grid she'd travel all over the world of Avatar just studying medicine and poisons she wouldnt really feel a need to truly interfere with the war unless someone outright makes it her problem or goes after her personally or her home
Harley would be a non bender similar to Dick but like way worse because she's incredibly unpredictable she'd also use blasting jelly at any given moment and God help you if u underestimate her because she's not a bender I feel like she'd have knowledge of a bunch of different weapons as well as an intimate knowledge of explosives she would be a bit of an anti hero in the avatar universe she wouldn't necessarily support ozai but I don't think she'd feel any need to truly go out and attack fire nation soldiers unless she sees them attacking kids or women or forcing themselves onto someone shss huge on consent
Joker are u insane I'm not giving him bending absolutely not no thank you lmaoo y'all really thought I'd give an actual thought for the joker nope but feel free to comment if u like
The flash would be an air bender not monk gyatso level air bending but still powerful
Wonder woman I can see her as being a bender but also a kyoshi warrior and definitely against the fire nation and would oppose them at every turn I feel like she'd be a metal bender and the way she'd metal bend would be similar to how Lynn does in legend of Korra but more powerful then lynn

More Sokka headcanons!
After he invented the swivel chair, he invented the first gun. He was just swirling around one day and had this idea of creating something that was explosive like Combustion Man's eyes, but could be used by non-benders. When he was goofing around, completely unaware of the gun's full power, he shot himself in the foot. No one really knows how he did not, not even him, but after Katara healed him, he immediately started lobbying the Republic City Council to outlaw a weapon they didn't know existed.
Him and Suki never broke up. It was actually kind of crazy, the people that knew them the most never thought of they would, but they also never thought they'd be the type of people to meet a person young and stay with them their entire lives.
He never had kids, but he was the best uncle in the world.
He goes on long walks every full moon, even if it was cloudy.
When he was Chief of the Southern Water Tribe, he did everything in his power to bring Hama back home. Aang and Zuko were against it, but they eventually relented for the sake of keeping the peace. It strained his relationship with them for a while, but he never once questioned his decision. Katara, Toph and Suki all stood by his hand.
He didn't know this at the time, but Hama and Kanna had been good friends before Hama's arrest. Everyone assumed that he fought for Hama's return because of that, but in reality he was fighting for something much more important.

Hi! I know you love Haru and I'd love to hear your thoughts on what his personality is like? Not his bending or his ships, but just what kind of person he is. He was super undeveloped in ATLA and I'd love to understand him better and write about him!
hey, i'm glad you asked!! super flattering to have you come to me in regards to this question, and i've analyzed this guy to hell and back over the course of nearly a year now, so i'd be more than happy to give you my characterization of him
granted, it's pretty lengthy, and is heavily based on canon, hence why a lot of it ties to his bending, but i'll try my best to make it so that it's more about haru as a person, rather than his service to the plot
also makes me super happy to hear that people do want to understand and write about him!! that really does mean the world to me particularly, so thank you <3
with all of this in mind, here's a collection of my (pretty lengthy, sorry about that) thoughts:
haru being super undeveloped is actually one of the reasons why i find him so compelling- there’s so much you can do with a character of his caliber because there’s not much canon/supplementary material that can discredit your characterizations. canon, however, does actually supply a characterization of him that i’ve managed to compile and accrue over the course of finding nearly every single little detail i can find pertaining to him. this includes his canon episodes in both book 1 and 3, the videogame he appears in (which is straight up called avatar: the last airbender), and even the silly shorts.
(mild disclaimer, i know full well that the latter two i mentioned are considered non canon, but i like incorporating little bits and pieces of what they have to offer, as i don’t really have any other options. also, the videogames are the only supplementary material where he’s treated as a part of the gaang, so it’s the most personality you’ll ever get.)
i’ll start with main characteristics i try to keep in mind when writing him, and then talk about smaller, more innocuous details that i just find particularly fitting for him.
haru is:
emotionally driven. a lot of his decisions are more driven by emotion, rather than logic. this ties in with his impulsivity and morality. he’s aggravated by his position in the village as the only earthbender left, and this culminates into him still bending discreetly despite the inherent risk. he does this not only for himself, but to preserve the (possibly only) emotional connection he has to his arrested father. this is a similarity he shares with katara, who’s emotionally tied to her mother due to losing her, and haru is the one to understand what that loss really means in this interaction: “this necklace is all i have left of her.” “it’s not enough, is it?” by saying this instead of an apology or some other response, he shows that the feeling of loss she’s experiencing is mutually understood in a way that goes beyond just sympathy. there is nothing that will replace who you’ve lost other than the person themselves, and he understand that more than anyone. it’s also implied that haru doesn’t know if his father is still alive, as no one knows where the prisoners go, but it’s clear that he still holds a sort of hope that he’s somewhere out there, and that keeps him going. it just takes a little bit of outside influence for him to fully believe in that, as well as being reunited with his father again. in general, he’s also pretty receptive of other’s emotions, and is quick to come to their aid.
impulsive. not just impulsive, either- he’s got anger and resentment lying beneath his quiet composure. it’s not as bad as characters such as zuko’s, but it’s still worth mentioning. i’ll mention the impulse part first, though- generally speaking, haru reacts faster than he thinks. upon being spotted practicing his bending by katara, he runs away without pausing to consider the harmful repercussions of being found out (nor followed home). he not only runs away from danger as a first instinct, he also runs towards it in some cases, ironically enough- he’s the first one to notice and immediately run towards the mines once he hears/sees the explosion and suspects that someone’s in trouble. he does this without any prompting by katara, even if the act of actually saving the old man needed some egging on from her in order for him to accomplish. his impulsivity comes to a head in the form of his most dangerous act- him attacking the warden. i’ve already elaborated on that specific interaction here, though i will once again emphasize that haru had absolutely no plans past attacking the warden based on his body language, further fueling the idea that this was just a split second decision, one made on nothing but complete and utter impulse. to bring the anger aspect into this, he’s also unable to hold his tongue and insults the fire nation soldiers and even his town once the former leaves, and his instincts swing wildly between running and fighting on a dime with little in-between.
adaptable. instead of completely shutting down in the face of such a negative situation (and over the course of five years, no less), he brings it upon himself to practice bending, accept his role as man of the house and work in both the shop and on the farm, and other responsibilities that go unmentioned, especially when taking into account that his father is apparently the leader of his village. this is where you could start paralleling him well to sokka, which i have done before, but i will make this more haru-oriented. there is definitely a lot more to be inferred with this particular aspect of him, but i will say that it takes someone of strong will to adapt to the situations presented in his episode, and learning to live with the grim reality of fire nation occupation. to run down what we see again- soldiers freely patrolling the villages, soldiers overtaxing the villagers, soldiers entering wherever they wish unannounced, soldiers stealing away people in the night without much resistance, soldiers forcing villagers to work in the coal mines to gather the coal needed for their ships, and soldiers forcing captured earthbenders to build fire nation ships. this is all off of the top of my head, so i could be missing a lot, but again, seeing haru still be as morally oriented and determined as he is after all of this, it’s pretty impressive and telling of his adaptive capabilities. to take this one step further, he’s also extremely adaptable when it comes to working with others, as in the games he fills his role as a necessary component of the gaang without conflicting sokka or other preexisting roles, and in book 3, he finds his place amongst teo and the duke, taking the most initiative amongst the three.
lonely. a snippet from his personality bio on avatarspirit.net calls him “lonely and brave”, and i think that’s especially fitting for his character. he only had his mom for five whole years after every other earthbender was taken away, and this is without mentioning the ostracization he faced simply being one, given how the fire nation constantly demoralizes his country’s benders and likens them to savages. the village he lives in also appears to be full of old folks, so it’s not very likely that he had friends his age that were even in town, especially if we consider the circumstances of following book 2 episodes with the earth army recruiters. (it’s also unlikely that his friends are alive if they did join the army- take a gander at this line from zuko alone: Gow: Just thought someone ought to tell you, your son's battalion got captured. You boys hear what the Fire Nation did with their last group of Earth Kingdom prisoners? Soldier: Dressed them up in Fire Nation uniforms and put them on the frontline unarmed, way I heard it. Then they just watched.) furthermore, it’s not likely that haru could’ve left his little village prior to its occupation- the games imply he’d been to omashu previously, but the circumstances of the war make this unlikely, unless he was super young. given his not always pleasant attitude and sullen expression we sometimes see him with, it’s not hard to imagine that the effects of him being so alone without the connections he needs has affected him deeply.
some other things:
-he’s horrible at lying (”they’re crazy! i mean, just look at how they’re dressed” is that really the best excuse you could’ve come up with??). -he doesn’t like keeping his hands/arms still (arms are usually crossed, sometimes gestures as he talks, hands usually balled as if expecting a fight). -he’s pretty outwardly expressive (for someone who’s supposed to be hiding most of the time, he tends to wear his emotions/intentions on his sleeve). -he can’t bite his tongue (especially when it comes to something that goes against his personal beliefs). -he doesn’t know how to react to touch (katara hugging him takes him by surprise both times, and he doesn’t reciprocate often, if anything he reacts stiffly) -he’s particular about his appearance (notably in the games, he makes negative comments about people touching his hair, and there’s also. sokka’s comments in book 3. sigh.) -he’s considered dangerous/sensitive by others (note sokka’s comments in book 1, and katara’s comments in the school time shipping short) -he lives a busy personal life (works both in the family shop and on the family farm, and has probably had to work in the coal mines at some point, though this is speculative) -he’s not above poking/having fun (in the games, he’s not above making fun of sokka and his comments about benders, and jumps at the opportunity to ride the omashu mail chutes) -he’s family oriented (count how many times he talks about his parents, it is many times i assure you, it’s important to note that he’s one of the few atla characters to actually have both parents as well as a decent relationship with them) -he has a tendency to idealize. he talks about his father fighting against the fire nation even when horribly outnumbered. it wouldn’t be surprising if he idealized the ideal of rebellion (which would later bite him given that:) -he’s a part of the first successful earth kingdom rebellion. this is mentioned on the wiki, and is unfortunately not shown in the show. it should’ve been, though. -he’s dramatic. he has an entire cliff he brings katara up to just to be dramatic and spill his sad backstory. he needs to be encouraged to save the old man, but he does it in the most dramatic way possible- he really didn’t have to stop the entire avalanche AND push it back into the mines. drama king. -he is very lucky. this can apply to anyone who encounters the gaang, but honestly, given his personality and a few things i’ve mentioned above, it’s a miracle that he’d survived as long as he did without detection nor suspicion. -he’s creative. (this one is much more speculative, but he does create huge statues of katara and ty lee pretty quickly, maybe he’s done similar things before)
to summarize: he’s a lonely impulsive idealist who isn’t afraid to throw hands if necessary and is also very attached to his dad <3 his connection to his dad makes up at least 75% of his personality

can you do 75, 93, and 100 with Sokka? THAT WOULD BE AMAZING!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!! - ✌ anon
➳ pairing: sokka x f!reader ➳ genre: fluff, a smidge of angst ➳ warnings: injury, kissing, suggestive? ➳ word count: 1679 ➳ rating: pg-15 ➳ summary: in which your daily training with sokka goes a little wrong. ➳ prompts: 75 - ‘i’ll just kiss you until you feel better, then.’, 93 - ‘you’re so cute when you’re struggling.’, 100 - ‘i’m scared okay? i- i’m afraid of losing you.’
Sokka was very adamant that the two of you needed to train twice as hard as everyone else, as two non-benders, if you were ever going to stand a chance against the Fire Nation. He truly was a warrior at heart and you really did love him for it, but sometimes he pushed you a little too hard.
“Come on y/n! You can do it. Climb like you mean it!”
Today, your over-enthusiastic boyfriend had you climbing a small cliff face. Of course, he had come up with the idea when presented with the issue of every bender in your team being able to whisk themselves up to wherever they needed to be in a matter of seconds. The two fo you, however, were not so lucky and had to train your bodies so that you could climb to such height.
It was a useful skill to have, that was true, but the likelihood of you ever actually needing it was somewhat slim. Of course, Sokka still saw it as an essential development that could be the difference between life and death in one of the battles to come.
“Sokka, we’ve been at this all day. Can’t I please come down now?”
The boy hummed, finger pressed to his chin as if he were thinking, before shaking his head and yelling up at you, “No, you can’t. Keep climbing until you reach the top.”
You sighed, rolling your eyes as you reached up for the next part of the rock.
From below, Sokka watched with pride as you climbed. Despite being a girl, you were quite capable. Suki’s influence no doubt. The two of you had shown Sokka what it really meant to be a girl, that girls could just as strong as men if they wanted to be. It was safe to say that he was in awe of both of you. Although, that didn’t stop him from woking you to the bone.
Your fingers hurt by the time you could see the top, not that it was that high. You’d climbed higher before. In fact, you had already climbed this very cliff face several times in the past few hours and every time you climbed it again it seemed just that little bit higher.
When you reached the top, you stood with your hands placed on your hips, wiping the sweat from your forehead. A victory pose of sorts as you realised in the feeling of finally being done with training for the day.
You leaned forward and cupped your hands around your mouth, shouting down at your obnoxious boyfriend. He was a nuisance, but he was your nuisance.
“Your turn!”
He looked up at you with a smug grin. “I’ll be there in less than a minute, watch me!”
Just like that, he was clambering up the side of the small cliff. You chuckled, watching as he puffed all the air out of his lungs only to quickly suck it back in, a strange way to regulate his breathing but it seemed to work for him.
He was determined to show you that he wasn’t tired, that he could keep going even after such a long day. For the most part, he was determined and would push past any hardship or obstacle that got in his way. However, it was usually Sokka that would complain and moan about his exhaustion after a long day of training. Well, when it was the others who are pushing him to his limits.
When he was in charge, like today, he never quite had to push himself too far. You had climbed the cliff twice as many times as him at least, all due to him insisting that it was more important for you to build up your stamina since he was already an ace at climbing. A lie, but you knew better than to complain. After all, it really would benefit you to train but, that being said, it would have benefitted him to work a little harder today too.
He looked almost like a spider as he climbed, long limbs moving far too quickly as he scrambled up.
“Sokka, you should slow down. You need to look at what you’re grabbing,” You warned, hoping he would heed your warning.
Of course, however, he didn’t. Why would he listen to you when he had this in the bag? He was going to impress you and beat his best time. Or, at least, that’s what he thought.
It all happened so suddenly really, although it also seemed to pass in slow motion at the same time when Sokka grabbed onto an unstable rock. It crumbled and broke apart from the cliff, his hand falling as it lost the grip that had been supporting him. In a panic, he fell backwards and soon he was plummeting down.
“Sokka!”
When he came to, Sokka found himself in his tent. He went to sit up only for the stabbing pain in his ribs to force him back down.
“Careful, I only just bandaged your wounds.” Katara scowled at her brother, clearly unimpressed that he had managed to cause himself so much harm thanks to his carelessness.
“Where’s y/n?”
The waterbender sighed, “Outside worrying about you. I’ll go get her, she can look after you now since you’re awake.”
You rushed into the tent the second Katara told you he was awake, only to find him forcing himself through the pain it caused him to sit up. Before he could blink you were by his side, hand resting gently on his bandaged back as you helped him.
“You okay? That was quite a fall. If Katara wasn’t here-”
“I’m fine, just a- a scratch,” He insisted, hissing once again as you lightly pushed a finger to the bruise on the side of his head.
You raised a brow. “Fine? You’ve been out cold for hours, and here I was thinking the fall would have knocked some sense into you.”
“Ha. Ha. Ha. I know, I should have listened to you and taken it slow, it’s my fault. I’m sorry, okay?”
With a hum, you nodded. You were just worried, not angry. Well, maybe you were a little angry at him but not as much as Katara.
When he breathed a sigh of relief, you pushed your finger a little harder into the bruise, causing him to whine in pain and swat your hand away, before walking over to the other side of the tent.
“It’s going to be cold tonight, put this on.” You threw him a new shirt, one without stains of his own blood, to wear since Katara had taken the other one to wash it.
What was funny was that Sokka couldn’t even raise his arms high enough to pull it over his head and, instead, ended up carefully twisting his body this way and that to try and find a way to do it that wouldn’t hurt.
You rolled your eyes and sat beside him, cooing, “You’re so cute when you’re struggling.”
He stopped trying altogether and scowled at you. “Are you going to help me or not?”
With a giggle, you reached out and helped him put it on, pulling his arms through it carefully so that you wouldn’t cause him any more pain.
“There, better?”
He hummed but soon seemed to change his mind. “It might stop hurting if you kiss it better.”
You chuckled again at his weak attempt to flirt but gave in nonetheless. “I’ll just have to kiss you until you feel better then.”
You started with the bruise on his head, pressing your lips to it ever so lightly. Then, your fingers lifted the material of his shirt so that you could place a gentle kiss against his bandaged torso.
When you were done with that, you were not surprised to find Sokka with his lips puckered as he waited for you. Sighing at his silliness, you shook your head but gave him what he wanted regardless.
Your lips connected for a brief, sweet moment and his hand came up to cup the back of your head. When you parted, he smiled widely. “I don’t think that was enough, I think I need more.”
The cheek of this boy even when he was pretty badly injured would never fail to amaze you. He could so easily push aside any pain and ignore any danger just to try and cheer you up. He could see the look in your eyes, he knew something was off from the moment you walked in.
As much as that cheeky grin and playful personality helped, however, this time it just wasn’t enough.
You looked away, gathering your thoughts as the conversation quickly turned from light to heavy.
His hand reached out, fingers gently turning you back to face him as he tilted his head. “What is it?”
“I just- I was really worried today,” he was silent, waiting for you to go on, “You were lucky; if Aang didn’t jump in to slow the impact, you could have died. Don’t you get that? You could have died today.”
His expression softened and he reached out for your hand, holding it in his own. “I know, I’m sorry. But it’s fine because Aang was there to catch me, just about, and Katara was there to bandage me up and-”
“You don’t get it Sokka. You could have died. Not fighting the Fire Nation, just falling from a cliff. Why did you have to be so careless? You knew that you could have fallen but you acted recklessly anyway!”
You pulled your hand away from him and turned away once again, anger bubbling inside you. It all slipped away, however, when he mumbled one more quiet apology.
“Sorry. I just- I’m scared, okay? I- I’m afraid of losing you.”
His head rested against your shoulder as he wrapped his arms around you, holding your warmth close. “I’m sorry, I know it must have scared you. I didn’t mean to get hurt, I won’t be so careless again.”

Wait...ATLA AU with Waterbender!Loki, and FireNation!Asgard. Mayhaps the spirits are more relevant in this AU, so people especially blessed by non-main/non-elemental spirits (so anyone other than La, Tui, Agni, uhhh Guain and Shu are the earth kingdom ones I think, and The Autumn Lord or air) can have some manipulation of Qi, but it works differently and is very, very rare, depending on the power level of the spirit, a bending blessing can last 1 generation without renewing it through more bending blood, or like 20 generations but it skips a few. So you can have Non-bender (but actually water bender Loki), or Insert Cannon Spirt that can give him some shape shifting blessed and maybe still Water bender but figures that that out waay later Loki. This ask is a little bit of a mess, but just Water Tribe Loki (who’s stuffed full of ‘water Tribe’s are barbaric’ propaganda) Living in Fire Nation Asgard.
because Loki, like me, simply must be the center of the universe:
- Asgard is the fire nation, obviously, and Odin has 3 kids: the fire-bending lightning-bending prodigy daughter, the spare fire-bender who is good but not as good who will strive to do what his father asks because Father simply must be right (even if he’ll realize later and switch sides), the non-bender who is the dishonorable family disgrace who freaks out and makes a run from home when he realizes he can water bend and neither of his parents can and realizes he was adopted? stolen?? and is maybe the avatar and oh frick Odin’s razing the other nations trying to find the avatar and AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
- The “air nation” can be four temples/realms (svartalfheim, alfheim, vanaheim, muspelheim) which were wiped out on by the last Sozin’s comet, so the cycle moved on to the water nation (southern water tribe/jotunheim) (northern water tribe/nifleheim) and there ain’t no way he’s going there those people are barbaric monsters... aren’t they?
- he joins a Midgardian (earth-kingdom) circus road-trip that’s touring across the realms (yes, he juggles) that’s actually just the Avengers and maybe they’re all non-benders? maybe some of them are? None of them are too flashy but Loki’s trying to observe the mix of bending styles and pick up on bending techniques without making it too obvious that he’s not a non-bender
- cue Loki getting in touch with the Earth spirit and getting some neat blessing gifts with bending and now he can Earth bend too and suddenly BAM Thor attacks the circus and Loki water bends to defend his circus friends from his fire and they make eye contact and Loki is so scared/devastated at having to go up against Thor who is angry at Loki for leaving home and has been tasked to retrieve Loki - the water bending throws Thor off and in his confusion Loki freezes him to the ground and apologizes and runs for it.
- now the circus folks are all “um, dude??? the prince of the fire nation just attacked us and you didn’t tell us you could bend?? what’s up with that???” so he tells them he may or may not be Fire Nation Prince Loki and they all feel betrayed because “those colonialist jerks??” but Loki explains how he’s actually a water bender... and may also be an earth bender... and they’re all totally on-board with the avatar returning because it’s about time and the earth kingdom is on thin ice with them (ba sing se is Svartalfheim btw) and yes the reason we’re a mix of benders is because this circus is actually the white lotus the avengers and were touring the realms to low-key try finding the avatar who is supposed to be the saving grace and end of this war please
- now the circus folks are helping Loki meet all the other nation spirits (yes they venture into the terrifying Jotunheim and Nifleheim while searching for the spirit (”what do you mean you don’t know where the spirit is?? how’d you find the last ones??” “I only met one!! and it came to me!!” “well I guess we’re stuck searching everywhere in this frozen wasteland then”) and additionally he only gets to meet the spirit who grants him the bending after he accepts parts of himself and others (for example, the water bending was a result of him finally realizing that he didn’t stand a chance at the throne and it wasn’t until every shred of hope that Odin could one day be proud of him was gone that he was messing with the turtleduck pool and maybe saw the water spirit in the reflection and bent water) (the earth spirit comes to him when he accepts that there are people that will still be proud of him and he can move on with life because the circus folk like him for who he is and were excited when he successfully landed a bunch of throwing knives on targets and decided on that as an act he can do)
- The circus folk are also trying to teach Loki what little they know about bending btw since he’s admitted to copying and mixing their techniques together (he does all the bending in one style and yes it’s as chaotic for the opponent as that sounds because you can never tell what he’s going to bend) but there 100% has to be an episode where he steals the water-scroll
- Thor chases them down and Loki can bend water now?? and he’s just trying to bring Loki back like Odin asked him too and then one time he catches up to them and Loki panics and bends Earth too and Thor realizes and stops fighting and tells Loki to just go. Thor goes back to the Fire Nation and argues with Odin and calls him out because Loki is the avatar?? he’s from the water tribe?? and he feels betrayed and does the Zuko-Ozai-Black-Sun-Speech-Without-The-Black-Sun about how neither Loki nor Thor need to prove themselves and he won’t tear this family apart any further (Frigga is in fact an absent mother here btw) and then Thor goes and chases Loki down over weeks and saves him (blue mask hero?? except... feathered-helmet hero??) from Fire Nation soldiers who got their hands on him and the circus folk are NOT happy to have him around (air bending comes to Loki when he finally forgives Thor for being an arrogant self-righteous meanie to him for years because Hela is attacking them now and this is so much worse and Thor gets his eye burnt by Hela and Bruce isn’t that good but he can water-bend and heal a bit so it’s not too bad and he takes a moment to breathe and goes for a walk and BAM air spirit)
- they get attacked a few more times, loki tries getting over the trauma that is realizing the harm that the fire nation has done to all the other realms (and thor is learning this too by the way so when hela attacks you bet they try mentioning the damage and loss of culture the fire nation is resposible for even if she doesn’t care because she’s the heir she needs to be perfect because her two brothers weren’t and look what happened to them they were exiled and live with a blasphemous blend of peasants (and rich-kid-metal-bending-earth-nation-runaway-royalty tony (”WHAT?! SO THAT’S WHERE YOU GET THE MONEY?? I thought you were scamming people not selling cool metal toys and what are we doing that attracts all these royal snobs to us??”))
- Loki has a dream where the fire spirit tells him to keep searching and then one day Hela goes to burn Thor again and Loki just goes ahead and fire bends right back at her and hoo boy his fire isn’t blue but it sure is a lot and Thor does the “........YES!!!” thing and Hela gets stuck in a ring of fire while everyone else laughs and leaves and she can’t lose so watch as her “close friends” end up not being ty lee and mai but the valkyries (the kyoshi warriors are the Red Room Assassins in this AU and no it’s not a childhood torture house it’s just a mostly-women midgardian protection group (maybe Nat trained there so if the circus ever bumps into them she’ll know them? Jane should get to be one of them too even if she’s more into inventing... she and tony should Talk... maybe she and Pepper can beat him up and give him some Respect Women Juice the same way Sokka got his?))
- epic chase across the realms since Loki can bend all the elements now he just needs to figure out how the Avatar state works but until then the gaang is struggling to stay ahead of the Valkyries and get Loki trained up to take down Odin (Thor teaches Loki fire bending so that’s covered but no one else except Tony who is a metal-bending expert really learnt properly and Loki isn’t even a metal-bender)
- eventually Hela snaps from all the losses and as she becomes more unhinged Brun jumps sides and Hela kills off (or fires, if we’re staying PG) the rest of the Valkyries and now Brun is super guilty but she’s fighting to avenge them now
- blah blah blah Sozin’s comet day and Loki goes up against Odin with the help of the Avengers (maybe Thor can take down Hela with the help of Brun and Nat?) etc. etc.
- so anyways Loki takes Odin’s fire bending and that was the first time he’s entered the Avatar state and when everyone asks how it felt Loki goes “oh i’m not the avatar”
- “you’re WHAT” “not it” “but you JUST went into the avatar state and everything” “yeah and kyoshi gives good head pats but I’m not it” “but-- you mastered ALL THE ELEMENTS?!” “yeah because I was gifted them by the spirits” “but you needed to renew the cycle after it was gone from the world for so long--” “nah I think the spirits just liked me and wanted me to have it” “they... just... like... you...??” “yeah” “so you actually ARE a non-bender Brother??” “oh yeah definitely I was, but not anymore :)” “so you ARE the avatar”
- [twenty minutes later] “I just went into the avatar state and they just told me i’m not it” “...this happened while you were in the avatar state though???” *shrugs* “eh” “don’t SHRUG this off is there an actual avatar out there or no???” “maybe the real avatar was the friends we made along the way” “shouldn’t we go find them???” *cue everyone setting out on another grand quest to find the ~actual~ Avatar*
#ThisPostIsLongerThanMyLifeSpan#TPILTMLS#okay so Avatar!Loki AU but also not#just because#I hope you didn't expect a short response#I may have gone overboard#just a bit#just a small tad teensy weensy bit#now if only someone would write this#I love the idea of Loki being a water bender living in Fire Nation Asgard though#like... the drama#Loki would have a Thor-1-worthy breakdown upon finding out#he'd jump to conclusions and be right#and then when he actually meets another water bender it'll be BRUCE and he's NICE#loki's going to be getting whiplash#the entire show is going to be like Zuko ALone with the learning except Loki isn't alone

For Sokka/Zuko prompts: falling in love + fighting non-bender style
hey, anon, i love you and i hope you like this <3
*
“Come spar with me,” Sokka says, just like that. The sun is setting in the sky and Katara’s food is beginning to stir Momo from his nap, and a few feet away Zuko can see Suki attempting to teach Aang a very basic fighting stance while Toph laughs.
It still doesn’t explain why Sokka is still there, looking at Zuko like Zuko is the insane one for being doubtful. “Why?”
Sokka flails. “Why– because! Because I’m bored! Because I want to! Because– I don’t know, Zuko, why does anyone do anything?”
“You do realize you would lose, right?” He says instead of trying to parse through his reasons. Only Sokka knows how his mind works and after the awful days spent in the prison, Zuko’s learned it’s no use trying to follow his logic.
“Excuse me!” Sokka gasps, offended in a way that shows on his whole face, “I’ll have you know, I’ve been trained by a master in the arts! I’ve got a space sword!”
He wonders how liberally the word trained is being used. “Still.”
“Oh, I see how it is,” Sokka sharpens in a smirk, arms crossing over his chest, and Zuko watches amused, a little disconcerted at the whiplash between expressions. “You’re scared you’re gonna lose. That’s okay, I get it, I’d be too if I were you.”
It’s not that Zuko doesn’t know he’s being played, he knows, but the challenge is still out there, in the air, and he has never been good at standing down. Sokka’s got him there and he knows it and Zuko knows it and probably even Katara, wherever she is, knows it too. “Fine,” he snaps, scowling because otherwise he’d be smiling and Zuko’s never been very good at that either. At least he thinks so, it’s been a long time, he can’t remember, anyway. “But don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
Sokka laughs. “Famous last words.”
*
A friendly spar is not something Zuko remembers doing. Training, yes, or showing off when he thought his father might be looking, or the thing Azula did where sometimes she would tackle him and they would wrestle and pretend it’s not meant to hurt, but not this, not until now.
But it’s nice, too, and it burns off the restlessness that’s settled ever since they left the Boiling Rock, and Zuko aches to think he’d been trying to destroy this sort of thing only weeks ago. His sword clashes with Sokka’s and they glint silver in the rising moon.
Sokka grins.
In the moonlight, he glows, and Zuko thinks of the boy with war paint on his face standing as tall as he could in the way of a warship, and something in his chest twists and aches again– it’s been a long road to here, but he sees the ocean on Sokka’s eyes just as clear as they had reflected the waves that day. “Tired yet?”
Yes, Zuko wants to say, frighteningly so. “Not a chance,” he replies instead because that’s not what’s been asked, and presses harder, hits him in the ribs hilt-first, smirks like he’s learned.
And so it goes, steady like clockwork.
*
“You know,” Sokka says the next night, “this place is pretty neat, huh?”
Zuko, who knows this temple by heart already from patrolling every night before sleep in the first week, figures neat is probably the understatement of the century. “You could say that.”
“It’s at least on the top three places we camped,” he continues, pushing further on his attacks and forcing Zuko to pull back in defense. Then, his face softens a little, eyes darting fleetingly up at the moon and around the clearing, and this sort of vulnerability, of distraction, is the perfect moment to make his move, but for some reason, Zuko can’t bring himself to do it. Sokka grins ruefully and the whole world goes a little dizzy, “it kind of makes you wish we could stay here forever, doesn’t it?”
Feeling oddly off-tilt, he shrugs, distracted. “I guess,” he shakes his head, hopes to clear it with the whiplash.
Sokka rolls his eyes, lowering his sword. “Well, no need to sound so excited, jeez, I was just saying.”
“Sorry,” Zuko blinks, watches the muscles on his arms work as he reaches for his canteen, watches water spill down his chin, the curve of his neck, and disappear under his shirt. Right. It’s definitely time for a break.
His own water does little to his dry mouth and it’s only when he tries to nudge their lanterns just a bit brighter but finds the flames flaring up higher, that he notices the racing of his heart hasn’t faded yet. Sokka smiles, and says something about their itinerary, and Zuko listens, and listens, and listens.
*
The Western Air Temple is left behind and it feels awfully final, Sozin’s Comet a hanging threat on the horizon. It won’t be long now.
Zuko sits on Appa’s back and watches Sokka, head bent over a map with his sister, the rising sun painting his skin. At his side, Toph makes a startled noise. “Really, Sparky?”
“What?” He frowns, dragging his eyes away to find her looking at him strangely. His face warms and his hands close into fists, even if he’s not sure why. Half of him kind of hopes Toph tells him, but the other half is terrified of the answer.
She shakes her head, makes a face up at him. “Nothing, just thought you should know– you’re so not subtle.”
It’s not like she’s wrong, but Zuko would still rather know what he’s letting show on his face now. Fear? Sorrow? Anger?
It doesn’t matter, in the end.
It won’t be long now.
*
After his coronation, it takes Sokka three days to find him in his study, table littered with reports and law texts, an insurmountable mountain of things he must fix, must change, to even begin thinking of reparations.
“How did you get past my guards?” He asks without looking up from the scroll in his hands. The candle by his elbow flickers, throwing golden shadows across the paper.
Sokka is smiling, Zuko can tell even while turned away, and there’s the rustle of his brushes being shuffled away from the edge as he leans against the table. “I’m like, a war hero now. It gets me places.”
“Suki let you in, then,” Zuko finally allows himself to roll up the scroll, tilt his head up for once to talk with him, and grins. He was right, Sokka is smiling, easy and malleable.
“Like I said, it gets me places,” he shrugs, kicks the leg of his chair, falling serious, “hey, she also said you’ve been here a while.”
Zuko sighs, feeling the exhaustion snaking around his bones, the tight aching on his chest from the branching scar Azula’s lightning left, the unsigned paperwork he left in his quarters this morning. “There’s a lot to do,” he says truthfully.
“Yeah, no shit, but it doesn’t have to be done in a day,” Sokka rolls his eyes, kicks his chair a little harder. There’s a crinkle between his brows and it’s very distracting, it makes Zuko want to reach out and smooth it away, trace the lines until they faded back to someplace peaceful. “And you don’t have to do it all alone either, dumbass. Come on, you need to relax before you combust in one big fireball of stress.”
“I can’t,” he rubs at his eyes, willing the weariness to settle back, and closes them for a second– inhale, exhale. “There’s too much– negotiations will begin soon, they’re sending ambassadors– and the school curriculum, it needs to be revised– and, and–”
“Zuko,” Sokka says, and his voice arrests Zuko’s focus impossibly. Zuko really wishes it didn’t because now he has to look at Sokka, give him his full attention, and it’s overwhelming. The moon is backlighting his figure and Zuko never noticed how much the blue of his clothes, his eyes, stand out in the red and gold of the palace. It makes Zuko’s lungs hiccup and his heart constrict painfully, a warm ache blooming just behind his sternum– a summer tide, heating up his skin against the night chill, and even before he asks, Zuko knows he would give him anything, there’s no choice for him. “Come spar with me?”
Zuko puts out his candle. “Yeah, okay.”
*
“I gotta say,” Sokka says, sword steady on his hands, “this place is a hell of a lot better than that clearing at the temple.”
The practice room has a mat to break their falls without leaving scraped skin behind, at least, and practice swords blunt enough they don’t have to worry about accidentally losing a limb. “The view isn’t all that great, though.”
Something shifts in Sokka’s eyes, softer and warmer. “I don’t know,” he shrugs with painfully fake nonchalance, “it looks pretty great to me.”
There’s a flush rising to his cheeks and Zuko doesn’t understand why for a second, but looks behind his shoulder at the closed doors, frowning, because this sounds like Sokka’s strangely smooth awkward flirting he’s witnessed. “I don’t think Suki can hear you from here,” he feels the need to point out, speaking around the sudden catch on his throat, “and the door’s closed anyway.”
Sokka chokes. “That’s not– I didn’t– what–” a pause as he seems to gather himself, “I didn’t mean Suki. Why would I mean Suki? She’d probably kick my ass for a comment like that, anyway.”
Zuko frowns. “Because she’s your girlfriend?”
Another round of startled coughing. It’s a really good thing those swords are blunt, after all. “We broke up, like, ages ago? After, you know, the comet and everything. It put things into perspective or something, I dunno. It was different, with no war or anything, when it was just us hanging out.”
“Oh,” Zuko clears his throat, something odd fluttering around his chest, and tries to think if there was something different about Suki in the past few days. He doesn’t think so? It’s hard to tell, he’s been busy and she always smiled when she saw him– it did feel like her eyes had grown a little more knowing lately, though, like she knew something he didn’t, but that could probably be his lack of sleep talking. “I’m sorry?”
Sokka snorts. “No that’s rough, buddy, this time?” but before Zuko could apologize for that too, he waves him off, “it’s fine, don’t worry about it. I think we just realized we loved each other better as friends. Maybe the fact that both of us are fine is a sign breaking up really was the right thing.”
“Like Mai and I,” he nods, understanding. Being with Mai had been nice, safe and comforting, but when she had taken his hand and told him she would be leaving with Ty Lee, Zuko hadn’t been heartbroken. Mai had smiled, a small pretty thing, and hugged him, face buried on the curve of his neck, and he misses her dearly, but loving someone doesn’t necessarily mean being in love with someone.
“Yeah,” Sokka twists his sword on his hand, eyes following the arc it makes in the air, and his smile comes in gentle waves, washing over Zuko with its cheeriness. “Now come on, quit stalling– I’m so kicking your ass this time.”
With a sinking dread, Zuko refuses to acknowledge the realization just beyond his fingertips, curling his hands around the hilt of his dao blades fiercely, and ignores the gentle smoke wafting from his palms.
*
Denial doesn’t take him too far, unsurprisingly. His feelings for Sokka have been building without his knowing, a spring that’s grown into a river spilling into the ocean, stretching in all directions, far beyond the horizon line.
It’s far too late to try and contain now.
Instead, Zuko will just have to learn to carry that around too, board it up away from the light, careful not to let any of it tumble out in the open. In the past, he’s never been very good at keeping his emotions in check, but since the Sun Warriors, he thinks he might be improving a little.
Not that Sokka makes it anywhere easy for him. So far, none of them have left, on the contrary– Katara has taken upon herself to boss the healers around while the injured are slowly trickling in from all over the countries, Aang and Toph have ingrained themselves in every one of his meetings since no one has dared to question their presence yet, and Sokka– well. Sokka seems to be everywhere these days.
Sure, Zuko knows they won’t stay forever, they all have a home to go back to, families to return to, but for now, well.
“Dude, wanna see how many fire flakes I can fit in my mouth?”
For now, there’s Zuko watching Sokka sit by his window, basking in Agni’s light and smiling at him while digging into the flake bowl even though he knows the spice will burn his tongue. “I’m guessing around two before you start crying?”
“It’s not that bad,” Sokka glares, but it’s mellow and gentle, late-afternoon lazy, and Zuko has to forcefully remind himself not to stare. “Yeah, no, okay, it’s bad, it’s bad!”
He pushes the milk he had nicked from the kitchens earlier just in case something like this happened towards him, snickering like he’s not hopelessly endeared. “I did warn you.”
Sokka glowers. “Shut up, I’m building up a resistance.”
“If you say so,” Zuko allows, knowing it will rile him up and make him flush, probably go into a rant, and hides his own smile. Affection bubbles on his chest, I know you, he thinks, I know you by heart.
Predictably, Sokka pushes off his seat, crowding on Zuko to tell him exactly where he could shove his condescension, and Zuko twists on his own chair to face him, an eyebrow raised. It doesn’t slow Sokka down, though, if anything, it inflames him further, makes him take another step forward, slip between his legs to poke at his chest.
“ – and, and,” Sokka trails off, looking down at where his legs have bumped on the chair, and seeming to finally notice how very close they had gravitated. Zuko shifts and his knees graze Sokka’s pants, and his skin seems to burn even through the cloth. Swallowing thickly, he risks looking up, shakily trying to keep a blank expression and feeling the ocean raging around his ribs. Sokka’s eyes are wide and blue, a gentle wave crashing on the sand, and any words die on his tongue. “So, uh.”
He hums questioningly, one hand clinging to the table edge, undoubtedly leaving soot burned handprints behind.
“I, erm, forgot what I was going to say,” Sokka admits quietly, and Zuko wants to think his gaze has slipped down to his mouth for half a second there, but it’s very hard to think when they’re close like this and if neither of them moves soon, he fears his chest might crack open like ice, spilling his love all over the floor, heart falling at their feet, bruised and stitched up as it is. “Hey,” he nudges his knee.
Zuko burns. “Hi?”
“I think– I think I’m gonna do something real stupid right now,” he says, “and I’m really hoping you won’t hate me for this later.”
There’s no hating you, Zuko wants to say, because he’s been falling since, perhaps, the South Pole, and by now, there’s no stopping. His feelings are an ocean and Zuko’ll drown in them.
Sokka doesn’t want a reply, though. He exhales shakily and suddenly, his hands are on Zuko’s cheeks and Sokka is leaning down, kissing Zuko. Lightning sizzles inside him and you don’t stare at the sun, so Zuko closes his eyes, hands closing on Sokka’s waist to draw him closer, feeling like he might die from this, would gladly die for this.
“Hey,” Sokka says again, pulling away, and Zuko chases him that inch, a pull and push of tides, and there’s breathlessness in the air they share, “so, no hating, uh.”
Zuko touches skin under his shirt and feels Sokka shiver under his hands. “What do you think,” he murmurs, so painfully fond that his whole self aches with it, “I love you, dumbass.”
Sokka laughs, light and bright, like sea foam, and kisses him again, and again, and again, like he knows Zuko has been walking around with all these impossible wantings inside him and now there’s a hollowness that leaves him afraid he might float up if untethered. Like he knows Zuko’s never thought he’d get to have this, to be this happy. “You’re such a jerk,” he says, “I love you too,” a kiss, a hand tangling on his hair, his heart, bursting, “I love you. I love you. I love you.”

'Cause I Was Just Thirteen (when I got my first taste of danger)
@cubedleo this isn’t what you’ve been waiting for but it’s somethin’ sjdjb
A/N: I was trying to write the Spirit Sokka AU but my brain wouldn’t let me until I finished this,,, so. AO3 link!!
Summary:
“We’re just kids.”
“Are we?” Sokka asks, and the silence stretches between them.
(The answer is yes, but it’s easier to pretend they grew up a long time ago than admit they’re just broken children trying to fix a broken world)
When Sokka was twelve years old he carved a promise to be a warrior into a block of ice.
It took him an hour to chop out the crude symbols with the tip of his boomerang, and when he was done he was sweating, and his arm ached. War was in his blood, it was his main drive, his life.
He never understood the people who didn’t want to fight.
(Later in his life, he would meet a boy with a scarred face and a girl with dangerous eyes, and he’d know that in a different life, that could’ve been him and his sister)
(The desire to fight would all but fizzle out at that realization)
There are few people left in the world who weren’t raised for war.
Bumi is one of them, and so is Aang. Sokka can see it in the way they speak, the way they move. The way they don’t shy away from fire or loud adventures that draw attention. He can see it in their smiles, wide and fearless and kind.
Bumi and Aang weren’t born into a world of destruction and stifling fear.
(Maybe that’s why Aang looks so much more hurt by the charred forests and waves of injured troops finally coming home)
(Sokka hurts too, but he’s tired)
(He’s so tired)
When the war ends, Sokka breathes for the first time in his life.
It’s like a wave of exhaustion hits him all at once, and if Suki hadn’t been supporting him and his broken leg, he would have crashed to the ground.
“We won,” Katara whispers.
No one cheers. No one smiles.
Slowly, Zuko stands, Katara’s hand hovers next to his hip and the second scar his family gave him. He holds a hand out to Aang, his face stone.
Aang doesn’t shake his hand or nod back grimly. He launches himself at Zuko and laughs with so much relief in his voice it reminds Sokka just how young he is.
(Aang wasn’t raised for war, but he was shoved into the middle with no warning, and expected to fix it)
Zuko shudders and stumbles, and Katara catches him and Aang before they all fall.
Sokka watches her, his baby sister, and realizes she’s been catching people her entire life. His eyes go blurry, and he staggers out of Suki’s grip to grab her shoulders and crush her against his chest.
“You made it,” he says into her hair.
Katara starts to cry.
Sokka isn’t sure how long they stand there after Toph burrows her way between them all and Suki wraps her arms as far as they can reach over the group, but it’s long enough for his leg to scream painfully in protest, and the weight on his chest to return.
Because it isn’t over yet.
Sokka looks down at his friends- his family , and realizes with a shaking breath that the war might be over, but the fight is far from done.
***
Getting used to a post-war world is more difficult than Sokka could have imagined.
For Toph, it’s not very hard. She was raised sheltered, and even despite her attempts to shun that lifestyle, she was never exposed to the loss of war or the scar it left.
Sokka is proud of Aang and Katara, who despite everything, held onto their wonder and inner light.
(the nights he spent pouring over strategies and plotting routes, burying evidence of scorch marks from around their campsite, the days he spent cracking jokes and letting them take out their frustrations on him through light hearted teasing paid off, and he’s so, so proud)
Suki was always an optimist, and Sokka is grateful for her every day, especially at night when he feels the guilt and fear grip his heart and threaten to undo him.
(She holds him and they whisper uncertainties and reassurances to each other until the sun rises)
Sometimes, though, Sokka just wants someone who understands what it’s like to live with what feels like the weight of his people on his shoulders, who knows what it means to grow up training every day for a fight he never asked for.
He finds himself sitting with Zuko more and more often after the war is over.
“Do you think they can ever really forget?” Zuko asks, watching a group of kids fly kites in the courtyard a ways away from where they sit.
“Them?” Sokka shrugs. “Yeah, they’ll forget. They’re just kids.”
Zuko’s eyebrows lower into something sad. “We’re just kids.”
“Are we?” Sokka asks, and the silence stretches between them
(The answer is yes, but it’s easier to pretend they grew up a long time ago than admit they’re just broken children trying to fix a broken world)
***
Hakoda is by no means old, even though his eyes crinkles at the corners and his hair is lined with wisps of white from years of stress, but war takes its toll on everyone, and the warrior has seen too many battles.
He walks with a permanent limp now, and when he asks Sokka to succeed him as chief of the Southern Water Tribe, he favors his right leg.
Sokka is eighteen, the same age his father was when he took charge, technically a full fledged adult now. But the sag in Sokka’s shoulders and the numbness in his eyes didn’t appear on his father until Kya died. His father grew up in a war just like he did, but he didn’t fight in it until Sokka was twelve.
There’s guilt in Hakoda’s eyes, so Sokka doesn’t stop himself from grinning and accepting happily, erasing any sign of the aching exhaustion off his face.
“Is this really what you want?” Katara asks him later, staring into the fire that crackles quietly between them.
Sokka wants to ask her if she’s ever asked Aang that, or Zuko. He wants to tell her he doesn’t have a choice, none of them ever had a choice.
Instead, he smiles. “Well, yeah! I was getting tired of Zuko being the only royal one.”
He can see it in Katara’s face, that she doesn’t believe him.
(But the war is over, the war is over so she lets him lie, the war is over and the worry lines on her forehead are slowly going away)
(Sokka knows now, more than ever, that the war isn’t really over)
(He lets her believe it is)
***
Sokka is at another meeting, another day long discussion of how to achieve peace when the sight of fire and red emblems still scares children, when all that conceals Ozai’s fallen statue in Omashu is a large, green canopy, when Sokka’s people are still scavenging for any food they can find, when Aang is still the only Air Nomad left.
Sokka forces himself to sit straight instead of prop his head on his hand and roll his eyes at Aang as the Earth Nation ambassador goes on and on.
Usually, Toph would be here to cut in with some crude one liner to break up the tension, and Katara would take notes for him when his mind wandered. Usually Suki would squeeze his hand under the table to keep him present.
But this is a closed meeting, as stupid as that is, and only recognised officials are allowed inside.
Zuko sits next to him, hands folded on the table, the epitome of royalty. Even Aang, who’d gotten such a sugar rush from his fourteenth birthday the day before that he tried to teach Momo to swordfight, sits stoically and nods along to the speech that’s been going on for an hour.
“-focusing our rebuilding efforts at this time on Ba Sing Se would be our smartest move,” the ambassador finally finishes.
Sokka raises an eyebrow. “Rebuilding what part?”
“Excuse me?”
“In your entire drawl you didn’t mention the outer rings of Ba Sing Se once. Do you really think we should spend more time and money on a rich inner ring that thrives off the other citizens' poverty?”
Aang looks surprised, like he’s trying to walk back through the meeting to figure out why he missed that. Zuko nods. “I spent time in the lower ring of Ba Sing Se personally, ambassador. I agree that you should be putting your main focus on the people there.”
If the ambassador were a firebender, he’d be blowing smoke out of his ears. “All due respect Fire Lord, but you’d really take the side of a chief of the most desolate land in the world over mine? A non-bender no less?”
Sokka’s wolf tail flips over his head as a rush of hot hair whips past him, from the Fire Lord and Avatar respectively. Aang is standing, his staff in his hand, and Zuko’s hands are clenched, his eyes flashing a warning.
Sokka holds up a hand, and Aang sits down, Zuko relaxes slightly.
(Because he might not be able to do the things they can, he might not have their power, but he does have their respect)
“You forget, ambassador,” Sokka says coolly, “that your king himself is a non-bender, and a personal friend.”
The underlying threat is understood loud and clear, and the ambassador sits down.
The discussion goes on, and Sokka has the taste of bile in his throat for the rest of the meeting.
It isn’t the first time he’s been disliked, like not being able to bend somehow makes him unfit. He sees the looks people give him when he walks alongside Aang on the street instead of behind him, when he tousles the great Toph Beifong’s hair or spars with the Fire Lord, when he teases his sister in public.
It isn’t the first time he’s been disliked for being a non-bender, but it’s the first time someone has said it to his face, in front of his allies. It’s the first time he’s heard the disdain voiced, and the ambassadors words cut sharp like a wip.
(The bile returns later, when he realizes his mind changed the title ‘family’ to ‘ally’)
***
The first thing Sokka does as the official Chief of the South is make plans for a memorial to commemorate the men lost in the fight, and the waterbenders lost in Ozai’s attempts to make sure that his grandfather's plan worked, that the Avatar wouldn’t survive.
(Sokka and Zuko find the place where the waterbenders were held a few weeks later, an entire underground fortress of cages)
(Every cage is full except one, there are no survivors)
(Sokka stares at Hama’s empty cage and forgives her)
It’s Katara’s idea to make the old Fire Nation warship part of the memorial, and with Toph’s help, the two of them build a statue that intertwines with the tarnished red flags and snow beaten metal. It means remembrance and hope.
Sokka’s tears freeze on his flushed cheeks when it’s finished.
“You know,” he tells Zuko the first time the Fire Lord sees it, “that ship isn’t all bad memories. It’s the reason we met.”
Zuko scoffs. “I thought that was a bad memory?”
“Funny how things can grow, isn’t it?”
Zuko has never looked more thankful than in that moment, and that night, sleepily sipping wine while Toph snores in his lap with her feet propped against Suki, watching Aang and Katara dance around the fire, he tells him so.
Sokka smiles, and looks around at his family. It seems like a lifetime ago when all he had was gran gran and Katara.
(Funny, how things can grow)
***
Rebuilding the South is… not easy.
Even with the men home from war, the South’s trade systems and outreach to the other nations had been completely demolished in the war.
The North, despite all its talk about rebuilding its sister tribe, does very little in the way of help.
The Northerners who moved with Sokka’s grandfather are angry, and a group of them plan to sail back to the North to convince them to bring aid.
Sokka lets them, and the day after they leave a blizzard hits the South.
Only four of the seven return.
(After the funerals, Sokka stands on the wall of ice surrounding their village and begs the moon for an explanation until his throat is sore and his voice is hoarse and raspy)
(She never answers)
***
Aang shows up one day, bouncing on his toes and grinning so brightly it hurts Sokka’s eyes, and tells him they’re taking a vacation.
Sokka has things to do, responsibilities and work that he can’t just blow (ha) off, and he just about says so when Appa roars, and Sokka remembers a time when he didn’t have to be chief or have the weight of his entire tribe on his shoulders.
(Somehow, the weight of the world felt lighter than this)
(Maybe because he grew up carrying it, or maybe because he never did, he only ever carried his friends)
Hakoda agrees easily to take over the Chief’s duties for the time being, and Sokka sees relief in his eyes when Sokka picks Aang up in a hug, and the two run off to the flying bison waiting for them.
Sokka sits in the saddle and stares at the back of Aang’s head, and tries to remember what it felt like when this was his life.
“Aang? Do you ever… miss when it was just us?”
The way Aang’s shoulders slump tells Sokka everything, and the younger boy nods. “Sometimes.”
(Sokka climbs up next to Aang and wraps his arms around his shoulders, and takes the reins when Aang turns to bury himself in Sokka’s shirt, because being Chief is hard, but being the Avatar is infinitely harder)
They meet at the Western Air Temple, because that was the first time they were all together.
Usually, there would be workers milling about, restoring all they can, but Aang got them to take the day off.
Katara hugs them both when they arrive. She cups Sokka’s face with her hands and squints at him like she knows he’s hiding something, and it takes all Sokka has not to crumble.
“Move aside!” Toph shouts, not giving Katara a chance to listen before she slides the stone under her out of the way. Toph punches Sokka’s arm hard, enough to make him wince, and then she drags both him and Aang into a bone crushing hug that they barely get out of alive.
Zuko laughs at them both, which is a welcome sound. Sokka only ever heard him laugh a few times during the war, and even fewer when they were all still navigating the new world. He steps forward and bows to Sokka, “Chief.”
Sokka doubles his dramatics when he bows back, “Fire Lord.”
Zuko snorts and stands. He pulls Aang into a side hug, and grips Sokka’s forearm. “It’s been too long.”
“The South Pole isn’t exactly a short walk away from the Fire Nation.”
“No,” Zuko smiles. “I guess I’ll have to plan more diplomatic meetings.”
Sokka groans.
Suki is a lot gentler in her hello, kissing Aang’s cheek and squeezing his shoulder, then wrapping herself around Sokka where she’ll stay for the better part of their meetup.
“Look at us,” she says, and she’s beautiful. “We’ve all changed so much.”
(Sokka hates how as the others smile, his stomach churns)
***
The anniversary of the end of the Hundred Year War is filled with celebrations, the steps of Zuko’s palace are transformed into a festival, a symbol of the Fire Nation opening its gates with kindness for the first time in a century.
Important people from every nation attend, and Zuko works with the Earth Kingdom to pay travel costs for as many citizens as possible, especially children.
Sokka has never seen so much food.
His stomach growls and his mouth waters, and Katara laughs at him when he’s led off to be formally introduced instead of being allowed to eat until he bursts.
Katara falls into step next to him, and Sokka takes a few seconds to take in how amazing she looks.
Her travels with Aang aren’t rushed or secret anymore, her eyes are brighter than he ever remembers seeing them, and she wears the Air Nomad cuffs Aang gave to her on her last birthday, a green headband holds her hair in place, and Sokka recognizes it as Toph’s. She kept the light-weight red shoes from their time hiding in the Fire Nation, and her blue dress has been altered to handle the hot climate most of the world shares right now.
Sokka thinks she’s the only one who could pull off wearing an outfit that includes all four nations, and he thinks she looks happy.
“I love you, you know,” He tells her, because he hasn’t seen her in months, because he missed her.
(He won’t admit it, but Sokka is still getting used to not having his sister at his side. His whole life, she’s been there. There’s something missing in him when she’s not)
Katara looks surprised for a moment, and then she smiles, and slips under Sokka’s arm, leaning against his side. “I love you too.”
Eventually, Sokka gets to eat, and relax, even if it’s only for a moment.
He watches Aang and Toph laugh at something Momo is doing as he devours a leg of meat he can’t name, and the sound of people enjoying themselves fills his ears.
Sokka had spent so much time staring at plans and treaties, organizing trades, building houses in the South, teaching people to fish and wash fur, that he hadn’t stopped once to look around him.
He’d spent so much time trying to heal the world, he never realized it was working.
(He loses his appetite then, but he still dances with Toph until his feet hurt, and he still tries to play Airball with Aang again, and he still smiles, and he still laughs)
(Because maybe he spent so much time trying to heal the world, that he hadn’t realized he was healing himself too)
***
People have tried to assassinate Zuko before. Sokka gets a letter from Toph (from Iroh, really, but they all pretend he’s not the one she dictates to) explaining a failed attempt in great detail at least once a month.
Toph finds it hilarious, but that’s because she’s there to take down the guy before they even make it into the palace.
Sokka finds it terrifying, because he’s halfway across the world with no way of helping.
It’s one of those sunny days that makes Sokka glad to be in the Fire Nation, and he’s sparring with Zuko, and for once, he might be winning.
Zuko’s dual swords clash against his singular one, and the two grunt as they both try to gain the upper hand. Sokka smirks and sweeps his foot out, tripping Zuko and knocking him onto his back. “Ha! I win!”
He reaches out to help Zuko up, fully intent on bragging for the rest of the day.
“Zuko move!” Toph shouts suddenly, and it scares Sokka so bad his instincts kick in, and he drags Zuko back to the ground, rolling away as a spike of ice longer than his wingspan flies through the air right where his head used to be.
Zuko breathes heavily under him, and Sokka slowly lifts himself off the ground, staying crouched as he scans the area.
Toph is on her feet, Katara at her side with a hand on her shoulder, and Aang is rushing forward, pulling Zuko to stand.
“Just so we’re clear, that wasn’t you, Katara, right?” Sokka asks, pulling his boomerang off his hip stealthily.
“What? No!”
“Didn’t think so,” Sokka says under his breath, and whips around to throw his boomerang towards Zuko and Aang.
Aang yelps and ducks behind Zuko, and there’s the sound of metal hitting something soft, and a loud ‘oof’.
Sokka barely has time to move before a wave of water forms a tiny tsunami in his direction. “Zuko, you need to get inside!”
People had tried to assassinate Zuko before, and it wasn’t out of the ordinary for the assassin to be from a different nation, though most of them were firebenders, loyal to Ozai.
Sokka realizes too late that this one being a waterbender is no coincidence.
His legs are swept out from under him and he hits the ground with a grunt. He’d slipped on ice like an amatuer. Sokka pushes himself up, reaching for his sword, and is met face to face with the assassin.
His eyes widen. “Nia?”
She snarls at him and yanks him into a choke hold, Sokka watches as his friends circle her.
“Let him go,” Zuko says, and it's only because Sokka knows him that he hears the tremor in his voice. “This is about me and you.”
“You think I’m here for the Fire Lord?” Nia spits, tightening her grip on Sokka’s neck. “I couldn’t care less about you or your people.”
And oh. Sokka should have known. He should have known because he knows Nia, he knows what she’s been through, what she’s lost. “This is about your sister.”
Nia’s breath quickens in his ear and she snarls. “You sent her back to the North, she died on that ship!”
Sokka should tell her it’s not his fault, but he doesn’t, because it is.
(He learned a long time ago that when you’re a leader, everything is your fault)
“You’re weak,” Nia continues, and Sokka can see Toph stiffen in the corner of his eye.
Katara’s glare is sharp. “Leave him alone. What happened to your sister was an accident!”
“It never should have happened!” Nia shouts, and her voice softens when he talks to Sokka’s sister. “If you were Chief, it wouldn’t have happened.”
For a moment, no one does anything. Everyone is still, frozen in a stunned and confused silence. Finally, Aang says, “What does that mean?”
“Our leader should be a bender! You and your father have made us weak! I saw it when I moved to the South!” Nia yanks on Sokka’s head, cutting off his airway with her grip. “With you gone, a bender will be in charge, as it should be.”
Sokka gasps on air, and closes his eyes.
That’s it. That’s always been it. Sokka can’t bend, which makes him less, which makes him weak.
History will remember the Avatar, and his three masters. History won’t remember Sokka.
(History has never remembered non-benders before)
(The world may have changed, but it hasn’t changed that much)
Maybe it would be better, with Katara as chief. She’s cool headed and smart, she pays attention in meetings, she’s respectful and kind and responsible.
Ever since they were kids, Katara has been everything Sokka is not.
Sokka coughs as a rush of air fills his lungs, and he grabs at the closest thing to him, which happens to be Aang’s hand, and holds tight. Zuko is holding his shoulders, searching his eyes for something Sokka isn’t sure is there. Katara has an arm around his back, and Toph is squating next to Zuko.
“Nia?”
No one answers, and Sokka understands. They caught her. She’ll be shipped back to the South for a trial. A trial Sokka will have to rule over.
(He’ll have to banish her, he knows. He knows and he hates it because she’s a child)
(She’s a child who was raised for war, and when it was won, she found another one to fight)
(Sokka knows, he knows and he understands)
His shoulders start to shake, the mask he’d been wearing for so long starts to shatter, and the hands holding him tighten, Toph says, “You’re not weak.”
“I would hate to be a chief,” Katara assures him.
But none of them say anything about Nia, and none of them try to stop his tears.
(Because in a world where children fight the battles, who really wins?)
***
Sokka is accompanied by his friends when he returns home, which sounds a lot better than saying he’s bringing back the Fire Lord, the Avatar, and the two most powerful water and earthbenders in the world.
He’s welcomed back with open arms.
The South has grown, refugees of the Water Tribe are returning home, the warriors are all home, the children are growing up on their own terms.
Hakoda tells him they found a place for Nia in the North, a school for kids who’d been traumatized by the war or the resulting events after it ended, and Sokka is so relieved that he spends the rest of the day letting Aang drag him penguin sledding and teaching Toph and Suki to spear fish.
They have a feast, and it’s the first time Sokka laughs in a long time. Aang doesn’t let go of his arm the entire time, and Zuko promises another spar.
Sokka isn’t perfect, and he isn’t all powerful. But when he looks at the shining, beautiful, alive faces of his family and his people, he knows he’s not weak, and he knows eventually, they’ll be okay.
When Sokka was twelve years old he carved a promise to be a warrior into a block of ice.
Now Sokka is nineteen, and he carves his name into a tiny corner of the icy memorial, right above Katara’s, to the left of Zuko’s, to the right of Toph’s crude fist print, and just above Aang’s.
Sokka was raised for war.
He held his sobbing sister as his father explained that the Fire Nation killed his mother. He watched the warriors ships sail away without him. He spent years teaching himself to fight so he could protect his family.
He was the newly redeemed Fire Prince’s first friend and the first (honorary) male Kyoshi Warrior. He fell in love with the Moon Spirit and crafted a sword from meteorite. He taught the first metalbender it’s okay to cry. He taught the Avatar how to deal with nightmares.
Sokka was raised for war. He was raised in fear and hate. He was raised to fight.
As the years go by, there are more people in the world who aren’t raised for war.
Sokka can see it in the way they speak, the way they move. The way they don’t shy away from fire or loud adventures that draw attention. He can see it in their smiles, wide and fearless and kind, and with those new faces and new hope, Sokka learns to forget.
(Of course he does, he was just a kid, and he learns to stop pretending he grew up a long time ago and admit he was just a broken child trying to fix a broken world)
(They all were)

Pretty sure someone already thought of this, but anyways! It came to my mind (thanks to a frawimg of someone, ngl there), an AU for A:TLA! The idea obviusly is not original of me but hey, I wanted to make a post about it anyway. The AU esentially swapping the Water Tribes and the Fire Nation, meaning, the Water Tribes started the 100 years war! Chan chan.
So, since the Water Tribes is bad, the two siblings that unfreeze Aang are.... Zuko and Azula! And both are way nicer (specially Azula) here because 1-The fire mations isn't that bad since they just stayed the way it was before besides from defending themselves in the war. And 2-Ozai died in the war since he was a firebender when they were very young, so Ursa was the only one who raised them along with our dear Iroh, and she did a better job than before with Azula.
The Fire Nation isn't as destroyed as the Water Tribe was in the show since they were already very military advanced, but the waterbenders grew powerful every full moon, while the firebenders had to wait to the comet for any power-up beside the power of the day alone.
However, there is not much firebenders either ny the time Aang awakes, most of them are in the war or dead, in fact, Zuko and Azula are the only firebenders of their town.
Azula is still a prodigy with blue fire (but without lightning yet) and Zuko is still a late bloomer, but this time he has the help of his little sister! Sokka and Katara esentially play the roles of Zuko and Azula in the show.
Aang, Zuko and Azula start their travel, they arrive at Aang's temple and he finds out about Gyatso and Zuko and Azula officially adopt him as their new little sibling, Azula won't admit it, but she is happy because she is no longer the youngest sister.
Eventually they arrive at Kyoshi Island, but instead of finding Suki, who was captured by the Water Tribe for taking part in the war just a while ago, they find Kyoshi Warrior Ty-Lee and her friend Mai, Azula and Zuko are simping.
Aang still gets it over his head, but since neither Zuko nor Azula are paying him much attention and he doesn't have a crush on none of them, it didn't last long.
Instead, he enjoys watching his siblings having a hard time and trying to flirt with Mai and Ty-Lee, Zuko tries not to be akward and goes in a sort of date with Mai, it goes quite smooth for the surprise of the three siblings.
I forgot to say this, but the team is having quite a headache wondering how in the spirit world Aang would learn waterbending.
Azula in the other hand, takes advantage of being a prodigy and decides to show off a little to try and impress Ty-Lee, however, that could turn a little annoying sometimes, luckily Ty-Lee understands and talks with Azula, she ends to teaching her a bit of chi blocking.
And then, chan chan, Sokka appears to attack the village! He is still a non-bender but he is very strategic and skilled, a wonderful aim with his boomerang and kinda the same level in swordfighting as Zuko.
Sokka focuses in attacking Aang, using his hit and run and dodging against him with am up-close and constant attack, giving him not much room to airbend, but Zuko comes to help him, miximg his firebending with the swordfight while Azula fights the waterbenders with Mai and Ty-Lee, helping and protecting the village.
Wow, I wrote.... WAY too much, and I still have plenty in mind, I could keep writting it like it or... I could write it like a fic! If someone is actually reading this let me know what you think! I need validation lmao

In your opinion, what do you think is the predominant love language of Sokka and Azula? And how would they express it to each other? :)
I really don’t know much about this whole classification of love languages, if you want me to be honest xD a quick wikipedia search says it’s basically a way to break down and categorize different displays of love? And there’s five of them, apparently? I have to say frankly that, as I write them, Sokka and Azula basically do everything in that list of five languages:
Words of affirmation: one of my main must-haves in virtually any Sokkla setting, where Azula is either not redeemed or halfway there, is Sokka telling Azula she’s not a monster. As you may have noticed, that particular thing bugs Azula fans a lot, and we really wish someone would tell her she isn’t one :’D thus, one of Gladiator’s most emotional scenes in Part 1 is Azula’s mild breakdown in Ember Island where Sokka reasons with Azula’s belief of being a monster and tells her that she’s about as human as can be, and the darkness inside her isn’t anything that makes her fundamentally worse than anyone else. There’s so many scenes I could point to that feature words of affirmation they say to each other, or that they say to other people about each other *cough* look forward to chapter 187 *cough*, some of my favorites from Azula to Sokka was her reasoning for wanting to celebrate his birthday (” I've wanted to celebrate your birthday because I'm quite grateful that you were born”), as well as her later affirmation that she loves him for who he is: (”I can say, truthfully… that I love that you're a non-bender. I know it might seem strange, but… I wouldn't change anything about you"). This is without going into the ten thousand times they’ve said they love each other :’D virtually all their conversations in Part 2 end up featuring words of affirmation of one sort or another, from either of them, no matter how often they may tease each other. So... this one is pretty predominant, I suppose?
Quality time: and see, this one happens to be Gladiator Part 2 in a nutshell. Whenever they have any time to spare (well, when Azula does, in particular), their immediate idea is to spend that free time together, in whatever capacity is possible. Outside of free time, they also work together as sponsor and gladiator, so they have their training sessions, Sokka’s fights, the events in the League... Sokka also helps her out with anything she may need (for instance, he took up a job as swordmanship teacher for the Enforcers to give Azula a hand, which still means they get to spend a bit of time together, even if she’s really busy with her new undertakings), so in the end, they spend most their time together, and they’d spend even more of it if they could. They only separate whenever they have no official justification for spending time together, such as when Sokka was still recovering from the Jeong Jeong incident, and even then they were desperate to return to each other ASAP. So... yeah, I think it’s safe to say, Gladiator-wise, they dedicate all the time they can to each other. And, as far as I’m concerned, other stories and settings could even have them spending more time together than they do in Gladiator, since there’s no Ozai breathing down their necks and threatening to kill Sokka if he finds out he’s his daughter’s secret lover. Therefore... quality time is also guaranteed.
Giving gifts: This one might be the less obvious one with Sokka and Azula, because Azula’s initial generosity (in Gladiator) answered some very specific needs: she ensured he was well fed, clothed, trained, bought him a house, found a maid for him... basically, she gave him a thousand things, but it wasn’t because she was showing she loves him, it was because she knew such things would be necessary for Sokka to offer a decent performance as a gladiator. Now then, after their initial hurdles are out of the way and their relationship has progressed, Sokka gives Azula occasional gifts but constantly struggles to come up with something she’ll genuinely cherish. He made Xin Long’s armor, he brought her flowers, he tried to cook for her, he gave her a tiny hot-air balloon, and crafted a betrothal necklace for her... he also wrote poetry, and he’ll try his hand at another artistic venture with Azula very soon. But this stuff is pretty sparse, even if Azula appreciates it a lot whenever it happens. As for Azula, she will give Sokka some pretty nice gifts very soon, just as she continues to provide for all his needs. In recent times, the gifts she’s been willing to give Sokka have been mostly non-physical ones, such as the thumbs-up she gives his crowd in his stead, once they’re leaving the Royal Dome on the day he wins against the Mad Alchemist, or ordering her Barge back into Whaletail Island’s port so Sokka could meet Katara... it’s stuff that means a lot to him, more than any physical gifts might (this, paired with the fact that Azula had offered to bring him home whenever he wished to go, without forcing him to stick to their original deal). So, maybe the gift-giving isn’t quite the classic sense of it, but it still happens in its own way. In general, I think it’s difficult for Sokka to give gifts to a Princess who basically can have it all... so that’s why he generally tries the DIY route with gifts, and so far it has paid off wonderfully because she genuinely loves everything he crafts for her. I think in most settings it’d have to be this way, and depending on Azula’s situation, she can either give him anything he wishes for or maybe resort to small but heartfelt gifts and gestures that mean a lot to the two of them.
Acts of service: this one may even tie slightly with the previous one, but frankly, as far as acts of service are concerned, these two take it the extra mile. Sokka didn’t always fight as her gladiator out of his own convictions, he started off doing it because of their deal... but as time goes by, he genuinely cherishes his role in her life and he would fight anyone for Azula’s sake, if need be. It’s, of course, a mutual thing because Azula will protect Sokka against anything, even her own father, no matter the cost. Hence, their relationship dynamics and battle couple behavior can be interpreted as acts of service for each other. Sokka, like I said before, has tried to cook for Azula too, which is a more classic act of service, as far as I can tell, and she appreciates his efforts even if not his results just yet xD in future chapters Sokka goes out of his way (in two different instances) to get lychee wine for Azula because he knows that’s the only licquor she likes, and every time he does that her heart grows twenty sizes. He also cared for her while she was sick, and she often does the same when he’s wounded, such as how she cared for him in Jeong Jeong’s arc. Sokka also tries to help her have good relations with people such as Captain Zhen, by agreeing to teach swordsmanship to his son because he hoped that would help Azula. Everything Azula did in the current Whaletail Island arc counts as well as an act of service: she’s privileging Sokka’s needs and his bond with his family well above her own needs, to the point of preparing herself to face that he might choose to stay with Katara - and she’s determined to respect his decision, if he were to make it. So, I’d say this one ranks really high, perhaps more than everything else?
Physical touch: ... but this one’s obviously a big deal too considering how damn difficult it is for them to keep their hands off each other at any given moment xD from something as innocent as walking through the Capital’s tunnels holding hands, hence, fulfilling Sokka’s wish for them to “walk through the city while holding hands”, to their very frequent intimate encounters, once these two are together they’re as good as magnets, constantly seeking contact with each other. Sokka has always struck me as a highly affectionate person once he’s with someone he genuinely loves, and so he pours that affection on Azula constantly, to the point where, in the early days of their relationship, she could barely keep up with it all. Physical touch doesn’t come quite as easily to Azula as it does to him, as she has never been someone who receives a lot of physical affection, but her attraction to Sokka has made it so she craves for him physically and on every possible level she can... therefore, despite she’s been awkward when other people show her any physical affection (often pushes Ty Lee off when Ty Lee hugs her, or remains unresponsive, barely responds to Toph’s hugs and stood limp and awkwardly the first time she did it, nearly flipped out when Ozai reached for her hand in the temple that one time, and most recently was left drawing blanks when Zuko hugged her....), she’s at ease when it’s with Sokka, so much that she welcomes his touch and everything about physical contact with him, altogether.
In short... I seriously think they do it all? You could, perhaps, rank the languages depending on which one is more predominant, to a fault xD but there’s genuinely no love language they outright don’t do, at least in Gladiator (and honestly, I doubt they don’t use all love languages in my other stories). But I guess, if you really want me to rank them...
Acts of service
Physical touch - Words of affirmation
Quality time
Gift-giving
Sorry, I really think Physical touch and Words of affirmation are virtually tied together in the story, both things tend to happen at the same time, and I really can’t bring myself to rank either thing higher, so it’s a draw. Quality time falls to #3 because they can sacrifice being together sometimes, as much as they hate doing it, but they can survive while being apart (despite Sokka would likely argue with me and say he absolutely can’t, but you know, ignore him (?)). Gift-giving, while very heartfelt and cute when it happens, is sparse, like I said... so it can stay in the last place, despite it’s still part of what they do for each other.
Is this comprehensive enough? :’D I sure hope so...
(if anyone needs me to hide this under a read more, let me know... got longer than I thought it would, woops)
#anon#... ended up being a very gladiator-oriented answer so#gladiator#sokkla#love languages is such a strange new concept to me#it's not the first time I hear it#but frankly Sokkla do it all#if that's not how it's supposed to work well#I'm sorry the love between my OTP is as OP as it is (?)#but that's how it works (?)

Hi! So I just read Child of the Heartless Wind and was blown away (pun not intended but accepted) I am curious about Suki's place in your version of the universe? Did she and Sokka drift apart? Has she passed away at this point? I love her character but have never quite gotten my headcanon straight as to her fate. I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thank you!
Hello! Thank you so much for reading. :)
Suki didn’t get a chapter mainly because I have several different headcanons for her, but they conflict with each other and I couldn’t decide which one to go with!
One is that Suki has Kyoshi’s blessing and lives for as long as she wants to because reasons (see: it’s what she deserves!!).
More “realistically”:
She retires after serving out her time as leader of the Kyoshi Warriors to stay on as the Fire Lord’s personal bodyguard until Zuko abdicates the throne to Izumi, when she then goes back home to train the up and coming Kyoshi Warriors. She is also often contacted for advice on worldly political happenings since the island (and her by extension) are regarded as mostly neutral territory, which makes it a great meeting place to sort out disputes between nations/states/cities/towns.
(Suki takes great pleasure in threatening to feed petty Earth Kingdom rulers to the unagi when they’re taking to long with negotiations etc.)
I like the fanon theory that Kyoshi Warriors don’t do any kind of traditional marriage. This is mostly to further snub the traditions of the mainland and also a reflection of Kyoshi’s daofei oaths.
Suki and Sokka have a lifebonding ceremony of some sort, skirting her oaths by having a Water Tribe ceremony and getting Aang to preside/sanctify it in some way since technically he is Kyoshi and the warrior vows are against Earth Kingdom traditions.
Unfortunately, they are mainly long-distance due to their respective duties; Sokka as SWT Ambassador and training with/leading the Order of the White Lotus, Suki with duties in both the Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom.
Suki is a brilliant tactician and warrior, but she has no patience for politics. Every time things get sticky with the whole Republic City stitch, she tells Aang that he should just pull a Kyoshi and bend the whole state into an independent island.
There are days where he is Very Tempted, but knows that’s... not the right choice.
(imo the whole Republic City/United Nations thing is ://// in canon but... y’know.)
Or to be shorter winded about it, The GAang gets roped into international politics in rebuilding the world, but Suki and Toph basically get to meddle when they please bc they have all the clout of being war heroes without serious ties to international leaders (Except for the ones that are their friends) so they have a lot more freedom with what to do with their lives basically.
Here’s where it splits for me.
Option 1:
Suki dies young.
She saves Zuko from an assassination attempt during the rebuilding of the Fire Nation, becoming a hero once again, there’s lots of angst especially on behalf of Zuko and Sokka etc.
or
Between retiring as Leader of the KW and moving back to Kyoshi Island, she and Sokka settle in a young Republic City for a few years so he can help rep the SWT and she teaches chi blocking etc at Toph’s metalbending school. (What’s a cop idk her). Unfortunately, just when it looks like the city is getting it’s feet under it, there’s a bad weather/crop year and between that and the exploding population of the city, illness breaks out. And sickness is not something that can be fought with fans or blades.
(I have a Katara and Sokka centric fic that combines and expounds on these two ideas, but who knows if/when it will ever be finished+published, bc it puts... a lot of hurt on my poor boy.)
Option 2:
Suki lives a normal life.
Or well, as normal as it gets.
She and the Kyoshi Warriors serve as traveling peacekeepers/defenders when they aren’t on rotation in the Fire Nation.
Since they’re an internationally known neutral party, it makes everyone more comfortable to have them in the palace. For those who support Zuko as protection against assassins, the Earth Kingdom for having some kind of permanent presence, and the Water Tribes for having allies.
She and Sokka love each other a lot, but don’t really have the time and space to be more serious about each other in the immediate aftermath of the war. They break up amicably after a few years and find their way back together after a couple decades when they’ve both found a little more stability in their lives. It isn’t until Sokka is elected as chief that they can truly make it work out, since Kyoshi Island is only a (relatively) short trip to the South Pole. They have two kids, one non-bender and one waterbender (Katara is delighted to train her niece.). Sokka and Suki are both high-ranking members of the White Lotus, until he falls defending Korra from the Red Lotus. Suki and Zuko coordinate to organize it from there, until she dies of old age, but basically the rest of canon as established in LoK remains unaffected.
So basically yes, many thoughts, but no real solidity to them yet!
#asks#posts#suki rel#hmm apparently i had more thoughts that i thought i did lmao#bunburrycommunitytheatergroup#bunburrycommunitytheatregroup

anonymous asked: How would you feel about an Avatar AU? I’d love to see what element, or if a character is a non-bender, you feel would match your favourite characters in HQ!
oh-HO. i am unsure if you know that Avatar is one of my all-time favorite shows so when i saw this ask i was pumped!!! without further ado: i finally had some inspiration. i took this a bit farther than just my fav characters (i did as many as i could think of) and although i say in my rules i don’t do hc’s i felt this ask was best answered in that format so i did my best! i hope you enjoy 😁 im nervous as hell about headcanons 😬 some i have reasons for (serious or funny) and others i just...have a feeling
special shoutout to my discord fam that i love so dearly and especially to @animelake13 and @justoverseas for helping me out 💕💕
Karasuno:
Daichi:
Alright with those thighs and that dependability?? Earthbender through and through
He is a rock solid, all-around player that holds Karasuno all together
he is their BASE, stable as fuck
he didn’t get those thighs from nothing he got them kicking around some boulders
didnt get those arms from nothing either, punching rocks out of mountainsides
Suga:
Waterbender for sure
Hello? Mr. Refreshing
Very calm and level-headed, but like Katara: DO NOT. FUCK WITH HIM.
He’ll fuck you up
again like Katara, mom friend, supporting the whole team, caring a lot about them and getting ready to fight and ready to jump in and help at a moments notice
Asahi: (Thanks Louie!)
ok so this boy was hard to decide bc, he’s a nervous bean but also the motherfuckin ace so he ain’t playin around
so i decided on earthbender because, he’s a big boi; a powerful and all-around player that has the respect of his teammates
and although he’s nervous, so maybe he doesn’t use earthbending to the extent of other benders but when he needs to, he will
and when he does it has impact and he is a pretty strong earthbender to boot
he can move fucking mountains when he wants to
member of the white lotus bc he only uses his immense power when he absolutely has to
noya: “asahi!! show us your bending”
asahi: “oh im not much of a bender”
MOVES A CONTINENT
Noya:
While my first instinct was firebender
the more i thought about it the more airbender made sense
air is the element of freedom and Noya is the definition of wild and free
not only that but his position too! airbending is almost purely defensive
sounds like our guardian diety to me
also can u imagine
Noya and Hinata racing like maniacs on air scooters
Daichi throwing up barriers all over the place to stop them but they just nyoom around them like obstacles
airbending is all about circles too and roooooolllliiiinnnng (hehe) thunder!!!
Tanaka:
alrighty well here is Karasuno’s firebender
Firebending is known for its intense and aggressive attacking style and literally
Tanaka yells like a maniac anytime he goes in for a spike
and firebenders can be hotheaded (dont have to be, Iroh for example) BUT say anything about Kiyoko, Karasuno or really anything and he’s ready to throw down
it might be all talk but he still gets fucking triggered
he fires up two flames in his palms and makes that face “ehhh what did you say about our lovely Kiyoko-san?!?”
Enno:
airbender
he has such patience and probably mediates or something
or else he’d go crazy from Tanaka and Noya doing stupid airbender/firebender shit and burning down the entire town
deals it out when he needs to, sometimes blowing Tanaka and Noya to opposite sides of the room and pinning them there until they calm the fuck down
anytime Tanaka gets too heated, Enno just shows up and blows out his fire
Hinata:
ok so i kinda spoiled earlier
but airbender
i know airbending is defensive and Hinata sucks at that aspect, but his personality man, airbender all the way
again imagine him and Noya zooming on air scooters around
they would be a MENANCE
but also in the same sense, airbending is all about finding a way around the “normal” way of fighting (they refuse to harm anything is what i mean)
Hinata had to find his own way of fighting in volleyball and yeah…airbender
possibly bc he’s a bit of an airhead too
Kageyama:
WATERBENDER BUT WITH BLOODBENDING BACKGROUND
ok hear me out
he used to want to control people and make them do what he wants, otherwise get rid of them bc they’re useless and who needs ‘em
but then he meets this stupid, bounce off the walls, airbender who he doesn’t need to control bc this kid already does what he couldnt find in anyone else
and he slowly learns to stop using bloodbending, sometimes slips and lapses, but for the most part has left that part of him behind
also water is the element of change and Kageyama certainly goes through a major change in character throughout Haikyuu
everytime Hina and him fight, they make a snowstorm that nobody can stop and it pisses Tsukki off bc he can’t do anything about it
Tsukki: (props to Lake for this one)
tsukki why are you an enigma
nonbender and is a sword master
with his ability to analyze and control, he would heckin destroy
sword fights are a lot about watching your opponent and being able to make a quick decision to block or counter attack
he can definitely make decisions at the drop of a hat and his strategies work and work well
Yamaguchi:
THIS BOY
IS A WATERBENDER BUT SPECIALIZES IN HEALING
when Karasuno needs him most!!! he’s there!! ready to help and get his team back on his feet, in this sense by healing them
and also like Suga, mirroring Katara, don’t fuck with him. especially when it comes to Tsukki
AGAIN like Katara/Suga, mom friend, there to support all the time and bust in and help when needed
More teams under the cut!
Aoba Johsai:
Oikawa:
so there’s a bit of a trend here i see
but Oikawa would also be a waterbender, i guess it’s a setter thing
water is the element of change and Oikawa adjusts his setting style and approach for each of his team members to bring out the best of them
waterbenders let their defense become their offense turning their opponents own forces against them which i think fits Oikawa to a T
can make ice spikes he can throw long distances with scary accurate precision
like, one can just zip past your ear, and you dont see him anywhere where tf is he?!
Iwaizumi:
i couldn’t decide between firebender and earthbender
so i went with the lovely mix, lavabender
just like Toph, Iwa shows his affection through some sort of violence, but thats just cause he cares a lot
oikawa has mastered the art of distinguishing flaming hunks of smoldering rock thrown at his face
also stubborn unmoving like a rock
and when he gets heated, he is fired up
and finally, arms. where did he get ‘em? throwing boulders around.
Shiratorizawa:
Ushijima:
metalbender, bc he’s definitely an earth bender but there’s something special about him
he’s a little dense (ok maybe not a little)
Earthbenders are generally muscular, tough and direct AND HELLO. thats Ushijima in a nutshell
Tendou:
our guess monster is definitely a non-bender
like ty lee specializes in chi-blocking
he can disrupt someones chi pretty easily making them completely helpless
sometimes he does it to be funny
like make Ushi’s right arm useless for a day
and Ushi is like “Tendou. I don’t use that arm anyways.”
“i knoooooooow Wakatoshi thats the point!”
which for some reason Tendou thinks is hilarious cause now he really cant use it
Semi:
firebender
mainly bc of his hotheaded and competitive behavior
his desire to show his abilities in his words is “uncontainable” and that kind of made me think of Azula
wants to show off and be the best
Shirabu:
so although Shirabu is also extremely hot-headed, he hits me as a waterbender too
maybe just because every single setter so far has been a waterbender but its just my gut feeling 🤷
Nekoma:
Kuroo:
firebender but can lightning bend
dont ask me why it just seems right
he has the concentration and flow it takes to lightning bend, i mean he has that whole speech he gives to his team before every game
“We're like the blood in our veins. We must flow without stopping. Keep the oxygen moving and your mind working.”
and while this may lead to possibly thinking he could be a waterbender, he uses his knack for fluid motion and deceptive strength for a different purpose
not only can he lightning bend, he can redirect lightning which takes an immense amount of skill and is drawn from waterbending techniques
maybe its also the hair cause it looks like he got hit by lightning
Kenma:
ill be honest, i dont think Kenma would be a bender
what he would be ilike is Sokka, super smart, the strategizer, the man with the plan
who people look to for the next step, the brain of the operation
and i dont think he’d necessarily have a speciality besides overwhelming ability to observe and make decisions
so basically…he’d be the same LOL
Yaku:
earthbender
being small (dont kick me Yaku) means nothing (uhh have you seen Toph?)
super dependable and not gunna take anyone’s shit
Yamamoto:
Tanaka’s counterpart
his homeboy
his fellow firebender
both ready to throwdown at a moments notice
Fukurodani: (wow i suck i dont know anyone well enough but these two)
Bokuto:
did someone say airbender??
i just keep imagining he was the one to teach Hinata the air scooter and they fuckin zoom around while Bokuto is hollering at the top of his lungs
his hair already looks winblown, like he just stepped off his glider and doesn’t bother to fix it
also im cackling bc airbenders prefer evasive manuevers and…i keep thinking about that time he ran away from a block and Akaashi called him out for it
Akaashi: (ily Lake for helping)
so apparently setters are waterbenders
bc this boy is definitely one
he has nice fingers (weird i know) but i can see him just making these beautiful hand motions to bend water and hnngg yes
ok but in a more real way, waterbenders have strong fluid motion and understand those around them, they believe in very strong connections between individuals
so even when Bo is out of the game, Fukurodani doesn’t fall apart because they have strong connections and can survive without him

What is your favorite episode of Avatar the last Airbender and why?
I don’t really have a favourite episode of Atla. There are so many amazing episodes that I could talk about, but the very first ep I thought of when I read your ask was actually Book 3′s ‘The Puppetmaster’.
I’ve always liked episodes with a darker feel to them and this one definitely delivers. Everybody who’s watched Atla before knows which episode this is. It’s the one that tells us which special bending technique could be taught to waterbenders. Toph discovered earthbending could lead to metalbending. (And in Tlok we discover lavabending), expert firebenders can sometimes lightningbend, Tlok teaches us airbenders can FLY when they have truly freed themselves of all earthly tethers and ‘The Puppetmaster’ in Atla introduces us to a special waterbending technique called; bloodbending.
Bloodbending! Oof, I love it!
Waterbenders can be taught to heal and it’s a skill that Katara was shown to learn almost instinctually after she was accidentally burned by Aang in ‘The Deserter’ in Book 1. Jeong Jeong even mentions in that same ep how water is the element of healing and of change, even mentions it, unlike firebending, is truly a gift. A very interesting comparison he makes is that water is healing and change, but fire is uncontrollable and destructive, interesting when comparing it to later seasons.
This is especially interesting when Book 3 introduces us to the darker side of waterbending, to the ability to bend the blood and other fluids within people or animals to control them like puppets. Watching the reactors Blind Wave and later on The Normies opened my eyes to truly how dark bloodbending actually is. It wasn’t something Jeong Jeong was aware of at the time and that because the person introducing Katara (and us) to it is Hama, the person to invent it.
It’s no secret that I’m a whumper. This might be news to some newer followers, but it’s why I have created my blog @howtowhumpyourhiccup, to have some place where I can post and talk about whump. But besides the whump potential bloodbending has, it’s also very interesting in certain other ways.
Up until Book 3, the evils of firebending and the fire nation were very much rubbed into our noses. Don’t get me wrong, there were plenty of exceptions, such as Jet and his gang of freedom fighters who were “good guys” who did others harm, but it’s book 3 that really shows us that this 100 year war isn’t as black and white as it seemed in the very beginning.
We had the episode ‘The Headband’ that showed us how oppressed the children of the firenation are, ‘The Painted Lady’ to show us that this war to “spread the glory of the Firenation” caused plenty of casualties on their own side by their own hand and ‘Sokka’s Master’ showed us a man of the Firenation looking beyond the prejudices of his people to teach a non-bender of the Water tribe his ways of the sword. However, it’s this episode, ‘The Puppetmaster’, that actually goes as far as to show the darkness in an element we have, by now, come to see as being only “good”.
Darkness can be in everyone, it can be in everything and this is something Katara, and the audience, was taught through Hama, a woman stolen away from her home in the Southern Water Tribe to rot away in a dungeon along with every single other bender from the Southpole until she learned how to bend the blood within others by training on the rats inside her cell before graduating to the guards and escaping during a full moon, when she was the strongest.
Everything about this episode is just so perfect.
The lesson we are all taught, Hama’s tragic backstory, the evil within something seemingly so innocent, the creepy undertones throughout the entire episode, even Katara straight-up learning to bloodbend herself against her will to save the lives of Sokka and Aang. There are so many things that I love about this episode. I could probably go on for hours.
So yeah, Atla has a lot of amazing eps, but for the sake of this ask, I’ll go with ‘The Puppetmaster’ of Book 3.

Twin Avatars AU
Randomish AU idea I’ve been thinking about for a while. Then this morning I just figured, fuck it, wynaut? ;D
~x~
*Instead of one Avatar, there's two. And the Avatar Spirit is a set of twin spirits.
*A light spirit named Chiaro, and a dark spirit named Scuro. The Light Avatar has Chiaro and the Dark Avatar has Scuro.
*Yes, their names are based on Chiaroscuro. It refers to the contrast of light and dark values, so I thought it would be fitting. c: Plus it's like my favorite painting style/technique!
*No, Chiaro and Scuro are not like Raava and Vaatu where one is good and one is evil. The dark and light spirit's dynamic is more like this: Chiaro is extremely stubborn, but level headed and clear minded, and Scuro is mad, but open-minded and a creative thinker. The best comparison I can think of off the top of my head is Chiaro is more like Pakku, and Scuro is more like Bumi.
*The cycle of the Light Avatar is the traditional water, earth, fire, air. The cycle for the Dark Avatar runs in reverse, air, fire, earth, water.
*The two avatars can always recognize the current or previous incarnations of the other.
*Also, seeing as Chiaro and Scuro are twins, the Light and Dark Avatars are basically platonic soul-mates. Their friendship has transcended thousands of lifetimes. It goes back all the way to the first two Avatars, Wan and Chiro. (I consider LoK and ATLA to be different canons, but Wan is cute so he can stay.)
*Aang is the Light Avatar, and Yume(OC doughnut steel) is the Dark Avatar.
*Aang is a twelve year old airbender and Yume is a sixteen year old firebender.
*While Aang was born to pure-blooded airbenders, Yume is a half-breed who was born in the Northern Water Tribe.
*In fact, she was recognized as the Dark Avatar when she wandered up to Light Avatar Roku as a two year old. She had gotten separated from her Mom, and recognized him. He recognized her as the re-incarnation of Mina(the previous airbending Dark Avatar) immediately. Side note: Now I wanna draw Roku playing with tiny Yume. So cute! <3
*Funny thing about the twin spirits, Chiaro re-incarnates as pure-blooded benders, and usually into families of note. While Scuro tends to re-incarnate into unexpected places and into half-breed bodies. It's completely like Scuro to re-incarnate as a swampbender, or a half-breed, or even pureblooded bender born into a non-native nation.
*Scuro is just tricky like that.
*Naturally, after Roku passes, Yume and Aang eventually meet and become fast friends. Neither realize that the other is an avatar at the time, but feel a strange connection.
*Much how like Aang has Appa, and Roku had Fang, Yume has a dragon named Draco. Yume met Draco when he was still an egg, and he and Aang are two of the only friends that Yume had.
*When Yume turns five, she starts to show serious firebending talent and is sent to the Fire Nation to master firebending. She ends up living with the Fire Sages(who take her in as they sense doom looming in the horizon and wish to protect the young avatar.) The Fire Sages do not tell her she is the Avatar until her sixteenth birthday.
*The sages fears are realized when Yume is spirited away soon after turning sixteen.
*When Aang froze himself, the spirits dragged Yume into the void between the spirit and mortal realm. Mercifully, they drag Draco into the void too.
*In the void, the previous Dark Avatars taught Yume the other elements and helped her become a fully realized Dark Avatar.
Side note- I actually can’t decide between Yume being a fully realized avatar, and being an ava-noob like Aang. Because I could have her with Aang bumbling around, learning how to properly utilize an ancient, powerful spirit and being adorable as two besties learn the elements together. Or I can have her contrast with Aang who is untrained but more emotionally stable. And also, she would absolutely feel completely responsible for him and feel like a complete failure when a certain terrible thing happens.
*In the void, time does not exist, so Yume doesn't age. Physically or mentally. No, she just becomes lonelier and more eccentric.
*When Aang breaks out of the iceberg, Yume is released from the void. Resulting in Yume and Draco crashing right into a sleeping Appa.
*Appa's a little salty about having his nap disturbed but is happy to see Draco.
*Yume is extatic to see Aang, and Aang is also quite excited to see Yume.
*It's only in that moment that Aang and Yume realize that the other is an avatar.
*Even though Yume knows that Aang is the Light Avatar, she doesn't reveal his secret. She opts to let him come clean on his own terms.
*At first Katara and Sokka(mostly Sokka) are suspicious of Yume. Seeing as she's wearing Fire Nation clothes(and is technically half-Fire). However they don't know that she's a half-breed and assume she's just Fire Nation.
*Yume is surprised by the amount of hostility she gets over being Fire Nation.
*"Look, I know there's something off about Sozin, but we're not all like that." "...What do you mean he died decades ago??"
*Both Aang and Yume have a hard time wrapping their heads around the fact that a century had passed.
*Katara is quicker to warm up to Yume, because she doesn't act like the fire-bugs that raided her village. Yume's actually quite nice, if a little strange. Also, she's the Dark Avatar, a force a balance and bringer of hope to the world.
*Despite Yume's strangeness, Sokka can't help but warm up to her as well.
*Both Aang and Yume convince Katara to go into the abandoned Fire Nation ship, and trigger boobie traps. Yume takes full responsibility(even though it was Aang's idea), and is kicked out. Aang decides to go with her, because he feels bad about getting her kicked out.
*While away, Aang and Yume have a heart to heart about why Aang lied about being the Avatar.
*When Zuko comes, both Aang and Yume come to the villages rescue. When they ask why she came back, Yume just says that it's her duty to protect the innocent.
*Because Yume is technically 116, she uses outdated Fire Nation slang. It pisses Zuko off to no end, and she enjoys every second of it. In fact, when she first sees him, she greets him with "Flameo, hotman!" and he gets really fuckin mad. :'D
*Zuko is about to take on a fully realized Avatar, and Yume thinks that so adorable. The difference in power between the two is so great, that Yume can hardly take him seriously.
*Even though Yume knows she can take this pissy Prince and his little squad, she doesn't argue when Aang opts to surrender.
*Of course she and Aang escape easily.
*The first time Yume sees Aang go into the avatar state, she freezes up. Something in her twists painfully at the sight of him in such distress.
*Even though Yume is a fully realized Avatar, she cannot defeat the Fire Lord alone. She needs Aang. And Aang is still untrained.
*Yume is horrified and disgusted by what the Fire Nation has become. And despite being the Dark Avatar, is often given the side-eye by the very people she and the rest of the Gaang try to help.
*Yume helps supplement Aang's training, but even she realizes that he needs to learn from real masters.
*When shit goes down at Wan Shi Tong's library, both Appa and Draco are stolen. Yume is completely devastated, but pretends like it isn't affecting her.
*She drinks cactus juice along with Sokka! :'D Although, she actually knew what it would do to her.
*Even though Yume puts on a brave front, Katara can sense just how much loosing Draco is hurting her. But unlike Aang, Yume refuses to open up and show her true feelings.
*At least until Draco comes back and she sobs into his fluffy dragon mane.
*When Aang gets shot down in Ba Sing Se, it wasn't just Yume watching her childhood friend die. It was thousands of lifetimes watching their platonic soul-mate die right in front of them, it was Scuro watching their twin perish right before their eyes.
*Yume was consumed by a blinding, inescapable rage. For the first time, a fully realized Avatar completely lost control. Yume completely leveled Ba Sing Se before Draco was able to calm her down. She only barely escaped.
*In that night, the world lost both it's Avatars once again.
*Aang felt like he failed the world, and Yume was too afraid of loosing control again.
*When the time came to face Ozai on the day of the comet, Aang went to the lion-turtle alone. Yume doesn't know where he went and is afraid that she'll have to face Ozai alone. That she'll lose control again.
*She goes with Sokka, Suki, and Toph to stop the warships and face Ozai.
*When she and Aang face off against the Fire Lord, she holds back and is shot down. When she comes too, she sees what she thinks is Ozai finishing off Aang(when his fire breaks through Aang's protective earth sphere and he slams against that rock). And immediately goes full on avatar state, but Aang is fine, and now also in the avatar state.
*The two of them completely curbstomp Ozai.
*Yume is about to deliver the final blow, when Aang comes out of the avatar state and stops her. She yields, and restrains Ozai instead. Aang then does his thing and takes Ozai's bending away.
*When the war is over, and it's time to have meetings to make peace, Yume is a terrible diplomat.
*She keeps putting her feet up on the table, pretending to fall asleep during meetings(while making an obnoxious snoring sound), and is actively hostile towards most of the old, stubborn generals and government officials that refuse to make the diplomacy process easy.
*There is even one incident where one Earth Kingdom general is giving Fire Lord Zuko shit about not just letting him kick people out of the Fire Nation colonies. Zuko argues that it's not fair to just kick people out of the only home they've known and make them homeless. The general isn't empathetic. Yume is visibly annoyed, and openly glaring at the man.
*"Is there something you have to say to me, Avatar?"
*"Yeah. You're a bitch."
*Zuko is horrified, Toph is laughing. Aang is struggling to remain composed.
*"Excuse me??"
*"Oh, I'm sorry. Let me rephrase that. You're a cunt."
*"I don't have to take this. If you do not expel your people from my land, there will be consequences."
*"Are you trying to start another war?"
*"I'll do what I have to."
*"You better not, I know where you live."
*The room goes silent.
*"Are you threatening me?"
*"It's not a threat, it's a promise~" ;)

WA Reviews “Dominion” by Aurelia le, Chapter 6: Timing
Link: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/6383825/6/Dominion
Summary: For the Fire Nation royal siblings, love has always warred with hate. But neither the outward accomplishment of peace nor Azula’s defeat have brought the respite Zuko expected. Will his sister’s plans answer this, or only destroy them both?
Content Warnings: This story contains discussions and depictions of child abuse, emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and incest. This story also explores the idea that Zuko’s redemption arc (and his unlearning of abuse) is not as complete as the show suggested, and that Azula is not a sociopath (with the story having a lot of sympathy for her). If that doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, I would strongly recommend steering clear of this story and my reviews of it.
Note: Because these were originally posted as chapter reviews/commentaries, I will often be talking to the author in them (though sometimes I will also snarkily address the characters). While I’ve also tried not to spoil later events in the story in these reviews, I would strongly recommend reading through chapter 25 before reading these, just to be safe.
Now on to chapter 6!
CHAPTER 6: TIMING
Alright, let’s see if I can review chapter six before the day is out. I’ve got five hours. I can totally do this! So Zuko, Mai, and Lu Ten are vacationing on Ember Island, which is also where the asylum is. This is already not a great combination. I think it’s pretty funny that Mai’s palanquin has more black on it than the other two, although that defeats the purpose of it being ambiguous who is in which palanquin if someone chooses to attack their procession. Yes, they are less likely to all be wiped out in a single strike this way, but someone could still target any one of them and still achieve a devastating amount of damage. Mai is heavily implied later to have fertility issues, so taking out Lu Ten might mean there would be no heir to inherit later. Mai is the spymaster, so taking her out would cripple Zuko’s administration. And taking out Zuko would throw the precarious peace the Fire Nation now has with the rest of the world into the refuse bin. So the consequences would be nasty any way that that attack could go. Related to this, the royal family being this small means it’s very vulnerable. Sure, there’s Iroh to fall back on in case something happens to Zuko, Mai, and Lu Ten, but Iroh no longer has his own heir. He could potentially legitimize one of his bastards to solve that problem, but he doesn’t know any of them like he knew Lu Ten. Ozai and Azula are non-options as well, as far as most of the world is concerned. And there are no uncles, aunts, cousins, or other blood relations for the throne to pass to outside of these people. If another noble family wanted to overthrow the royal family, they wouldn’t have to go through that many people to get what they wanted. Sure, the people they would have to get through are powerful, but they could feasibly accomplish it if there was, say, a rebellion of the magnitude of Robert’s Rebellion against Targaryens in ASOIAF. It could be done if they had the right candidate to rally around. But back to the chapter. There’s an interesting political undercurrent going on where Ember Island is concerned, and Zuko’s initiative in dealing with it pleasantly surprised me. Mai deciding to use this opportunity to take a vacation and look for more “knives and stilettos” for her collection made me chuckle, and the mention of Sokka’s space sword was great. I’m imagining Mai presenting it to Sokka with just a hint of smugness now. Gosh, Zuko and Mai are cute before shit hits the fan in chapter seven. Him holding up a parasol for her and her exasperation about him “roughing it up in exile” made me smile. Also, Lu Ten is cute with his “white gold” eyes. I do have some doubts about him being a firebender, though. For one, it seems like him not being one would throw a serious wrench into Zuko and Mai’s dynastic plans, which could be interesting to explore in “Thrones.” Second, given that Mai isn’t a bender and Ursa wasn’t one either, there’s around a 50/50 shot that Lu Ten isn’t. So it’s both a reasonable possibility genetically and intriguing plot-wise, so I’m leaning towards him not being one at present. I also have a theory that a certain other child will be legitimized by Zuko later on, adding another wrench into the already complicated works. But I’ll get to that in later chapters. “‘Love you, bye’ [ . . . ] Was that really how Lu Ten would remember his father? As someone who was always leaving about some official business?”—This is actually really sad, because I imagine that while Zuko worried about whether he would be a good father or not, he does genuinely love his son and want to have a connection with him. “Once he convinced his people that an honorable peace was worth sacrificing a century of ill-gotten gains.”—Very nice symmetry in this line here. “He still wanted more.”—I have an AMV you should watch in regards to that, Zuko: (slash)watch?vS6fNJ79evn8. Also, that song is very appropriate for the conflict in “Dominion” in general. “He didn’t look forward to the prospect of wearing so much clothing in this heat, but if that succeeded in getting his opponents to take him more seriously, he supposed it was worth the imposition.”—Or you could strip to get your opponents to take you seriously. Oh wait. “Mai could almost understand why Lu Ten never tired of playing with [Zuko’s crown]. Beyond the fact that Zuko didn’t often allow him to.”—This makes me remember how Azula allows a certain child to play with her crown later, so this is a nice bit of (probably) unintended contrast. “/Wake the baby, and you die/”—Lol, Mai. Okay, so basically none of the loyalists want to meet up with Zuko to discuss how the Fire Nation should be run. And while he and Mai are discussing it, she says, “Not everyone’s as honest as you” and I want to laugh myself sick. Mai goes over some of the reasons why the loyalists are refusing to meet with him, then volunteers to help him with the negotiations. We also get this cute line, “She had thought there must be something wrong with him, when Zuko told her [her grimace] was her most endearing mannerism.” They have such a wholesome relationship here. It would be such a shame if something happened to it. “‘I know,’ Mai sighed dramatically, ‘sometimes I doubt my own judgement’”—I’m both laughing at that and pitying her, given later events. Okay, so Zuko expresses that he sometimes feels as if Azula wouldn’t have these kinds of problems ruling like he does. Technically, he’s right—the loyalists would much rather have Azula as their ruler than Zuko (if they couldn’t have Ozai, that is). But rather than continuing to reassure Zuko, Mai shuts this conversation down with snide remarks about the other problems Azula would have, namely being crazy. Which is unfair to both Zuko and Azula, even though I get why mentioning Azula set Mai off like that. In response, Zuko asks her, “‘Will you honestly pretend you never had /any/ regard for her at all? [ . . . ] That you /hated/ every minute of it?’” After which Mai actually admits that she was fond of Azula—the line “‘And she actually had a sense of humor.’ /Unlike someone else I could mention/” was especially painful to me. It seems like progress coming from her, but then: “That now that she consented to share her feelings, they could cry together over Azula’s sad, sad fate. Or some similar nonsense. Agni, he was worse than Ty Lee sometimes.”—The expectation the readers were building to is averted. “‘She crossed a line, when she left you to die. And subsequent events showed her for what she really was. [ . . . ] Something barely human, let alone deserving of respect.”—I maintain that Mai is wrong about Azula’s capacity to kill Zuko. First, let’s look at what happened when Azula “tried to kill” Zuko. When the ropes for the cable car were being cut in the Boiling Rock, Ty Lee, interestingly, did not express any concern about that. That would be strange if Zuko’s life was in danger, since we know she cares for Zuko as a friend. As such, while I don’t know exactly what would have happened if the cable car had hit the boiling lake, it seems as if there’s a possibility that it would have floated instead of sinking. Instead of everyone inside of it being killed, they would have been left stranded on the lake, where they could have been retrieved and taken into custody. Or it could have killed them, but again, I can’t see Ty Lee being okay with that, given her defense of Mai in that same episode. Then there was the attack on the Western Air Temple, during which Zuko seemingly falls to his death twice. The first time this happens, he lands on another Fire Nation airship—which Azula had to know was there. The second time it happens, Azula is falling along with him, until she manages to save herself. Now the question is, would she have managed to find a way to save him as well? Would she have grabbed him as she launched herself towards the cliff? Ultimately, we don’t know the answer to this, because the Gaang caught Zuko before she got her bearings back. She didn’t have to save him, so we will never know if she would have chosen to do so. As such, it’s ambiguous how serious her attempts to murder him were. It’s possible that despite her claims and her father’s orders, she might have been trying to capture Zuko instead. We can’t know for sure one way or the other. Zuko, on the other hand, would have let Azula fall to her death. No matter how any readers might feel about his characterization in “Dominion,” they can’t deny that that was something that he did in canon—and given the emphasis on being merciful to one’s enemies in ATLA, that was a decidedly unheroic thing for him to do, especially after he had been “redeemed.” Anyway, back to the chapter. Zuko thinks he should go visit Azula, since they’re on Ember Island. Not because he wants to, but because he thinks he should. “letting the fabric fall from his hands and onto their bed like a sinuous river of blood”—Great description to convey the tone of the moment. “‘You don’t owe her anything [ . . . ] And the sooner you realize that, the better off we’ll /all/ be.”—Mai’s not wrong, but we know Zuko doesn’t feel the same way. “‘You don’t know what it’s like [ . . . ] to have someone you whole life, and then they’re just gone.”—Ouch. Ouch ouch ouch. But has it occurred to Zuko that Azula probably felt the same way when he was exiled? I’m sure it hasn’t. "Mai considered in that moment just going with him, but dismissed it almost as quickly. She had never been to see Azula, and there was no telling how the mad princess would react to her, whatever improvements Ty Lee claimed in her mental state."—Honestly, Mai? Maybe you should have gone with him. I think it's clear that you're still hurting over what happened at the Boiling Rock, even if you deny it and claim that your denial is closure. Talking with her might have helped you, and it might have helped Zuko too. In addition, I suspect that the events of this story would have gone down a dramatically different path if you had been with Zuko during chapter seven. But you chose to stay with Lu Ten, which is, admittedly, a reasonable choice to make, especially given your justifications for it (namely, that if Azula got the upper hand in a fight, she could use you against Zuko). But it also meant that you missed an opportunity to head off some of this story's conflict before it began. So Zuko goes to visit Azula, while Mai practices with her knives. The "but [she] like to think it was something more, that maybe he inherited not just her eyes and thick black hair, but her enduring love of pointy things" is super cute and makes me want him to be a nonbender even more. After a while, though, Mai gets the news that Azula has escaped. Yes! Except she's not as enthused about the prospect as I am. "'Answer your Fire Lady!' Mai said stridently, taking a quick step closer to compel him and eliciting a frightened squeak from Lu Ten, who was unused to hearing his mother express herself so loudly."—Nice characterization here. "Another /cursed/ letter"—Ah, so does this mean Mai is fully aware of Azula's letters and Zuko's fixation on them? "'Dada?' he chirped hopefully up at her, with that same uncertain smile she had seen on Zuko's face too many times to count."—Awww! "while Mai removed the flame headpieces and pin from her hair, letting it fall freely down her back"—Have we ever seen Mai with her hair down? I don't think we have. I'm curious about how that looks. "And Mai reflected on the fitness of the metaphor"—While I reflect on the cleverness of the writing.
We move on to Zuko who, like us, is skeptical that the breakout at the asylum had nothing to do with Azula. Also, "cold therapy" sounds like the Fire Nation's equivalent of electroshock therapy. Apparently, it "helps" mental ill firebenders, which both Zuko and I think is nonsense. In any case, Azula got thrown into a cooler at one point, with Iroh's consent. Apparently it did not go well, because Azula flashed back to being frozen by Katara in the finale, even assuming the position she was in then, with her hands behind her back. Eventually, though, she acclimated to the cells. "'We think her fire simply burns too hot. As you are aware, she is the first bender in several generations to wield blue flames, and the first ever recorded in the royal family.'"—This is so cool. I wonder what the stories of the other blue flame benders are? "'You're used to blaming her when things go wrong, aren't you? [ . . . ] It gives you a measure of comfort."—Dr. Kwan's got your measure, Zuko. Oooohhh, so Zuko wanted Azula to be guarded by eight imperial firebenders at all times. It's no wonder she needed to set up an escape for some of the other patients in the asylum—how else to pull the guards away from her? Also, the "No joke" comment made me laugh. "Didn't these people know what she /was/?"—Stop saying "what" instead of "who" Lord Weirdo. It's contributing to your dehumanization of Azula. "This one opened outward, to prevent Azula from hiding behind it when anyone entered her cell."—That is surprisingly savvy of them to have designed the door that way. "'Her hair is /brown/! /Dark/ brown, like my /mother's/!"—Ugh from the future. "'And she's /shorter,/ that isn't /her/!"—So is it canon that Azula has a short stature, or is that more of your preference, Aurelia? Because as a short woman, I don't mind, but I also don't know the answer to that question, XD. Zuko briefly panics, thinking that Azula is pretending to be one of the imperial firebenders, which is a nice nod to her pretending to be a Kyoshi Warrior in canon. But of course Azula didn't stick around like that. "But it still hurt"—The way this is led into makes me think that this is meant to be read as, "But it still hurt that she'd betrayed him," even though this isn't a betrayal, because it's not about him at all. This is also a nice echo to Azula's speech on the beach. "The guard smiled shyly, odd as that was to see in a man at least five years his senior, 'It'd be hard to forget….'"—Is it weird that I find that cute? Because I do. Azula's plan is brilliant, which of course it would be. Though Zuko thinks, "This just proved how little they knew her. Azula didn't identify with anyone, Zuko recalled. She was just good at pretending." Which is not true. Azula is capable of empathy; she just doesn't express it in obvious ways. Being raised by a sociopath who equated warm emotions with weakness no doubt influenced her in that respect. "The one part that did /not/ make an awful sort of sense to him, was how she had subdued a guard and left the cell under her own power. Kwan and the guards both confirmed that she had been sedated, and the effect should have lasted several more hours."—This primes us to both the fact that Azula has been building up an immunity to the sedatives they're been giving her, but also that she might still be effected by the drugs when we see her. This is important in light of what happens in the next chapter. Zuko's means of trying to find Azula are actually very well thought out. Then he remembers that it's Azula's birthday, which makes him remember his conversation with Ty Lee, which makes him remember when he was last on the beach with Ty Lee, Mai, and Azula. This leads him to the realization that Azula has gone to the royal family's abandoned summer home. "He knew how much she hated it there."—Is there a specific reason for that, or is it just that it reminds her of her mother and thus is poisoned by her resentment towards Ursa? "His footfalls sounded despite the dust, the faded wood floors unaccustomed to his weight, and a sudden idea struck him. Zuko removed his boots and left them sitting beside the doors"—Well that is one way to make sure you don't have to worry about the logistics of him removing them in a certain scene in the next chapter. "Not a /single/ pair of /pants/ in her entire wardrobe?' Azula grumbled to herself. 'Why am I not sur—'"—I may have laughed really hard at this, because of course Ursa wouldn't have owned any pants! That would have been so unladylike of her! Though it is also very concerning that Azula decided to look through her mother's clothes for something first. I get the rationale behind her decision, but it's also unsettling once you know she uses the same makeup as her mother too. "He did not remember deciding to look inside. That fact alone was troubling."—Brace yourself, Zuko, it's about to get 1000x more troubling. "And he had never been one to hide pointlessly. Or to run from a fight."—Pssht, who thinks that way about themselves and expects us to take them seriously? "'You came back.'"—Oh Azula, honey. I wish he had come back for you, but he came back for the idea of you more than anything else. And that cliffhanger is where you chose to end the chapter. I'm very fortunate that I started reading this when there was—gosh, I want to say sixteen chapters up already? I distinctly remember getting the notification in my inbox when "A Kindness" came out. So I didn't have to wait for chapter seven like some readers did, which I imagine would have killed me. I know waiting for "Line of Fire" almost did, and that was for Ursa rather than Azula. Though to be fair, Ursa is a fascinating character, so she was worth the wait. In any case, I'm looking forward to tackling chapter seven and heading into the meat of this story, but I might need a few days to prepare myself for it. As always, thank you for the read! Sincerely, WiseAbsol
