synopsis: as any good tragedy goes, the highs are high, and the lows are low. at least as a hopeless romantic, georgia can romanticize the gut-wrenching tragedy that is her rocky relationship with tornado wrangler tyler owens.

georgia stared down at her phone for a few minutes, disappointed but not surprised. the restaurant around her buzzed with life and excitement, but she was anything but that. the waitress had been checking in on her every fifteen or so minutes, her expression grimmer with each passing round.

on the waitress's fifth round of checking in on her tables, georgia waved her over, asking for the bill with a hollow smile. the waitress nodded, a sickly sympathetic look on her face. georgia all but rolled her eyes, not needing a stranger's pity. she paid the bill and left immediately, wanting to get away from all of the people and the waitress's prying eyes.

and funnily enough, georgia almost couldn't bring herself to feel sad. it was hard to even muster up a few tears, although not impossible. the only thing that could describe her feelings, plain and simply, was numbness. numb to the countless times she had been blown off by him, numb to the ever growing list of dates she had been stood up, numb to everything that had to do with that goddamn tornado chaser.

when she got home, she made her way towards the bay window in the living room, not wanting to go to bed just yet, unable to feel tired as her feelings sat heavy on her chest. her knees instinctively curled to her chest, imitating the pose she found herself in all too often since crossing paths with the handsome self-proclaimed tornado wrangler tyler no-good owens a year and a half ago. she turned on the stereo and set it to a low volume, not wanting to wake up her parents. rain pelted against the window in sporadic thunks, but the sounds were drowned out by a familiar song on the radio. her chest squeezed as she listened, humming along while watching the storm brew outside, a reflection of the anguish brewing inside of her.

the moment played out in her head like a movie, a bluish tint over the film to aid in setting the dreary mood, the camera of her mind focusing in on the few tears that managed to escape her eyes, her longing look out the window panning out and off into the world, transitioning into whatever tyler was doing. was he asleep? was he out and about with his crew? was he at some bar, not a thought of her in his head? the scene continued to change in her mind, each as unsettling as the previous thought, until she drifted into a restless sleep.

after a couple of days, georgia ignored tyler's texts, deciding that he had run out of second chances. she was done with him for good.

as she came home from grocery shopping one clear, sunny day, tyler was there, looking out at the garden her mother tended to, a few flowers of his own in his hands.

georgia tried to resist him, she really did. she wanted nothing more than to deliver a swift punch to his annoyingly perfect face.

"hey darlin, i missed you." he said, opening his arms wide. she fought every nerve, muscle, and whim in her body from running up and jumping into his strong arms. she had a point to prove to him.

but his eyes didn't hold even a hint of malice or manipulation in them. tyler was a simple guy, georgia could easily chalk up his flakiness and absence to his passion for his job. it was as if he didn't even realize that he had done something wrong, and how could she be mad at him for something he didn't even mean to do? it was as if they haven't been apart for the past two months, date upon date cancelled, with georgia spending her nights in bed, soundless sobs escaping her as she wondered what she could do to make it work, to make them work.

no, in that moment, it was as if it were only yesterday that he was there, in her house, having dinner with her parents, before sneaking out to go dance with her at the town bar into the late late hours of the night.

and so, that night, long after the plates have been washed, her parents already tucked away in bed, tyler whisked her away in his truck, heading towards an open field away from town, the sky clear as ever.

and in that moment, the wind whipping throughout his big red truck on that warm oklahoma night, georgia felt like she was floating through the air. because she was here, with tyler, the same gleeful look gracing both of their faces.

the movie pieced itself back together in her mind, an upbeat love song playing in the back as their laughs surpassed the roar of his truck. all previous transgressions against her on his behalf were forgotten in this moment of pure, unfiltered glee. a moment in which the actors went off script, genuinely happy and feeding on each others' energy.

he stopped the truck, jogging out of it and opening her door for her, leading her into his truck bed. he grabbed a few blankets from the backseat, putting them down to make it a bit more comfortable for them. he then hopped up next to her, wrapping the blanket and himself around her as they looked up at the clear night sky, talking about whatever popped up into their hyperactive minds. it was as if they were each other's own personal drug, dopey smiles never leaving their faces, hearts thumping rapidly together as one.

and the next day, she woke up at some ungodly hour to tyler hopping out of bed, putting on his clothes and gathering up his belongings.

"you're not leaving again, are you?" she asked, not able to mask the pain in her tone. he looked over at her and gave her what she assumed he thought was a sympathetic smile, reassuring her that he would be back by sundown, that boone had found the makings of a perfect storm about an hour west of them.

georgia pulled the covers closer to her bare body, chilled not by the air, but by the emptiness surrounding her as tyler pressed a chaste kiss to her head, already one foot out of the door.

as it approached dinner time, she made one of tyler's favorites, pouring out a glass of iced tea for everyone and setting the table.

the six o'clock hour passed, and she told her parents to go ahead and eat, not wanting them to get hungry.

the seven o'clock hour passed, and she covered up her and tyler's food, not wanting it to get cold.

the eight o'clock hour passed, and with it, the sun fell below the horizon. the ice in her iced tea was long melted, and tyler was, as always, nowhere to be seen.

the nine o'clock hour passed, and georgia found that she was no longer hungry. it was almost as if she could see the hours pass by in a movie montage, everything moving around her, but her staying perfectly still in her chair, waiting in sorrowful desperation for her absent love interest.

the ten o'clock hour passed, and she put everything away in the fridge and did the dishes, getting ready for bed.

only when the clock on her bedside reached 11:18 did tyler text her.

and just like a fool, she believed him, falling asleep while making plans for what her and tyler would do the coming day.

so after a week or so of no responses from georgia, tyler returned to georgia's house, only to find her truck gone and her mother in the doorway, a disapproving shake of her head as she headed back inside.

and with that, the movie of tyler and georgia ended, the final frame focused on tyler's fallen face, finally realizing, after all this time, that he fucked up irreparably.

I was just starting to enjoy the party when The Norwegian came out of the bathroom and ruined everything.

At the time, I was dancing with a hyperkinetic yoga enthusiast named Windy. Or possibly Mindy. All attempts at verbal communication were being swallowed up by the blizzard of techno coming out of the forty thousand dollar stereo system. Which was fine by me since I didn’t imagine Windy-Mindy and I had all that much to talk about anyway.

She looked about a decade younger than me — clocking in somewhere south of thirty — and it was manifestly evident that her lifestyle choices were largely antagonistic to my own. Shrink-wrapped in Lululemon, Windy-Mindy radiated health and vigor as she bounced around in fuchsia Nikes performing an ode to the benefits of healthy living expressed through the medium of interpretive dance.

Exhausted by the spectacle, I took a breather and another belt of Woodford Reserve. In an attempt to bridge the cultural divide I waggled the bottle at Windy-Mindy, inquiring with my eyebrows. Her brow furrowed but the corners of her mouth did curl up slightly — one patronizing, the other amused. Or so the bourbon whispered to me.

It may have been correct because she countered by proffering her own bottle — the blue-tinted plastic kind that hikers and college students liked to clip to their backpacks. In her other hand were two small white tablets, which I lip-read to be Vitamin C.

I shrugged and swallowed.

The contents of the bottle turned out to be wheatgrass and champagne, a combination that tasted even worse than it sounded. I forgave Windy-Mindy when the vitamins started coming on about twenty minutes later. Every cell in my body began sending my brain a jubilant message of thanks and goodwill, as well as suggesting, by the way, that they wouldn’t mind getting to know every cell in Windy-Mindy’s body if the opportunity should arise.

This wasn’t my usual kind of trip and it made me suspect two things: (1) The tablets probably weren’t Vitamin C and (2) if Windy-Mindy was on the same ride, it might explain her unlikely but undeniable interest in me.

Another possibility was that she had heard I was Jake Constable, a.k.a. the host of the party. From there she might have leapt to the not-unreasonable conclusion that the twenty million dollar mansion in which the festivities were taking place was also mine. Which was true, in a very temporary but excruciatingly legal sense.

The actual owner of the house, Mickey Wu, had hired me to look after it while he was out of town. For most of the evening, my flagrant abuse of this responsibility had precluded me from enjoying the party. Which was too bad since it was turning into a real killer.

The place was mobbed with people, an undeniable relief in those early evening “will it happen?” moments, but now a source of concern. I took it as a matter of faith that the front door was still on its hinges as I hadn’t seen it close in hours. On the mezzanine, a velour-clad DJ was hunched over a laptop and two turntables, conjuring up humongous bass beats and mixing them with everything from sirens to symphonies. The crowd was loving it, up and moving on every available horizontal surface including the dining room table, much to the annoyance of the people clustered around it hoovering up lines of white powder.

When an albino wearing a lime green speedo and an impish grin threaded his way through the crowd on a Vespa I found myself on the verge of questioning whether the party had been such a brilliant idea after all. He was travelling at a reasonable speed and using his horn judiciously but I still couldn’t shake that harbinger-of-ill-fate feeling.

At least until I discovered Windy-Mindy and her narcotic vitamins. After that, I was blissfully surfing the moment, my worries gone and my eyes inexorably drawn to her endless curves as they took on a cotton candy glow. I frowned and shook my head, but the effect persisted.

I spent long, increasingly paranoid moments pondering whether an admixture of wheatgrass and champagne could give bourbon hallucinogenic properties until I noticed the sun winking at me from behind the skyscrapers of downtown Vancouver through the window behind her. I squeezed my eyes shut, hoping to banish this unwelcome party crasher. When I opened them, the sun was eclipsed by another — The Norwegian.

My first impulse was to go over and hug him, but I knew that was only Windy-Mindy’s vitamins messing with my amygdala. My second impulse was to run.

It had been almost three years since I had seen my former business partner, and he hadn’t changed a bit. The ornate black leather trench coat and vaguely Druidic hairstyle would have been comical on a smaller man less prone to violence. As he loomed over the crowd I tried to disappear within it. We hadn’t parted on the best of terms.

I had brought him in on a deal that had started as a hobby for me, a way to use the inheritance I received from my grandfather — a couple acres of land on Hornby Island and a green thumb. Granddad grew prize-winning heirloom tomatoes there. People loved his tomatoes. I preferred marijuana. As did my friends, and their friends, and so on.

When I terminated our partnership, The Norwegian kept three hundred thousand dollars of my money and I kept my kneecaps, which seemed like a fair distribution of assets at the time. Deprived of “Granddad’s Ganja”, The Norwegian moved into harder drugs and I moved into a converted loft in a post-industrial neighbourhood in East Vancouver. I spent money, threw parties, started dating my real estate agent, wrote a screenplay, shredded a screenplay, married my real estate agent, spent the last of my money, got divorced by my real estate agent, became mildly depressed, and began perusing community college course catalogs. I was a phone call away from signing up for a denturist training program when my ex-wife/realtor lined me up with house sitting gigs for her wealthy clients.

Clients like Mickey Wu, in whose house The Norwegian was now standing. He was nonplussed when he spotted me. Then his face lit up with the expression of affected innocence that always accompanied his most heinous acts.

My pocket vibrated. I dug out my phone to find a text from Richard.

there’s a dead guy in the bathroom 🙁

I stared at the phone. Then I stared across the room at the bathroom door. The Norwegian was no longer standing in front of it. He had been replaced by Richard, who was staring back at me with an expression of genuine innocence and barely controlled panic.

Assembled Piece by Piece, This 8-Year Build is Finally Complete

Ron Porter from Hudson, Florida, is a retired Marine contractor who specialized in building boat docks and boat lifts. When he was not modernizing elements in the maritime industry, he was enjoying his hobby of building cool custom classic trucks, an ongoing fascination that began when he was 14 years old with a $5 1947 Plymouth. In the last several decades, the trend continued with lots of fun vehicles residing in the garage. With a previous feature truck article already under his belt, this 1950 Chevrolet 3100 pickup is his latest and now that it’s complete he’s already working on a third that’s coming along nicely. Builds always become easier the more often you do them, thanks to the combination of experience and the unending source of parts available from the aftermarket and the Internet. Here’s an example: Ron was able to find the cab for this truck in Crystal River, Florida; the chassis and suspension, designed specifically to fit a 1950 Chevrolet pickup came from TCI Engineering in California; Smoothie Fab running boards came from North Carolina; the bed came from Mar-K in Oklahoma; and dozens of other critical parts arrived at his door, thanks to the mailman.

From the outset, the collection of components was designed around a potent powerplant, one that Ron had stored in the corner of his garage long before he started on this truck. Built by his good friend Charlie Ratliff in Port Richey, Florida, the motor began as a balanced Chevy 454, stroked to 466 ci and capable of moving any vintage pickup with authority. “I wanted a good, noisy one,” he told us as he opened the hood during the photo shoot. Once again, aftermarket parts were the answer, beginning with a Thunder Series Edelbrock Endurashine 600-cfm carb and Air Gap intake, Lunati cam, Mallory electronic ignition, and Sanderson-coated headers that feed a stainless steel exhaust system with MagnaFlow mufflers. A two-speed Rainbow Products fan and four-core aluminum radiator keep temps in the green while the March Front Runner pulley system drives all the accessories. Using a custom aluminum driveshaft, the big V-8 sends an estimated 575 hp to the Turbo 400 trans, upgraded with a B&M shift kit.

With the big-inch motor sitting quietly in the corner patiently waiting for a home, Ron got the ball rolling by ordering a complete TCI Engineering chassis package, carefully painting every inch when it arrived. Assembly began with their independent coilover frontend with 2-inch drop spindles followed by the Currie 9-inch Posi rear with 3.25 gears, held in place by TCI Engineering’s four-link. Alden coilovers keep everything stable. Eliminating the gas tank from the cab, Ron relocated the new 17-gallon aluminum fuel cell to the rear of the chassis, installing a billet filler cap in the bed. The Flaming River rack-and-pinion power steering connects to a Flaming River chrome column inside and is topped off with a steering wheel that Ron won at a car show. TCI four-wheel disc brakes ensure modern stopping power. The chassis became a roller, thanks to the 20-inch Coys wheels, 8 inches wide up front and 10-inch versions in the rear, wrapped in Saffiro rubber.

The cab was next and although it was in fair shape, lots of time was spent removing the dents and dings acquired over the years. The firewall was recessed 4 inches to accommodate the big-inch motor. Working smart rather than hard, Ron bought replacement parts rather than trying to salvage badly damaged originals. The hood and the passenger side front fender are original, the driver side front fender was found on the Internet, and the 2.5-inch wider fiberglass rear fenders came from Superior Glassworks. Smoothie Fab 16-gauge cold rolled steel running boards widen to match the extended rear fenders. Body mods include door handles and emblems shaved, the air vent in the cowl was welded shut, and a new chrome grille and stainless steel bumper added to dress up the front end. Lots of time was devoted to the engine room, hiding hoses and wiring to create a sanitary look. The Mar-K bed is outfitted with traditional Oak planks with a blonde stain and there’s a subtle antenna located between the cab and the bed. The rear was fitted with a custom pan and Chevrolet woodgrain logo was added to the tailgate. Lokar LED oval taillights and license plate light illuminate the rear. The ominous twin pipes tell you this ain’t yer daddy’s old Bowtie.

Moving inside, the distinctive leather-lined interior begins with distressed leather buckets sporting embroidered Chevrolet logos separated by a custom center console with cup holders. Leather door panels, floor mats that display the Chevy logo, and the matching brown tweed headliner and carpet all blend together beautifully. The truck entertains with a Kenwood stereo head unit powered by a five-channel Kenwood amp under the seat that energizes 6.5-inch Kenwood component sets in the kick panels along with a second pair of 6.5s and twin 10-inch subs on the rear cab wall. Controls for the single pane Nu-Relics power windows are on the dash, the Nostalgia Air A/C uses an additional panel under the dash for the vents, and the dash itself has all the unnecessary holes filled to highlight the modern Haneline gauge package. Brian Bojinoff at Master Crafted Custom Interiors in Hudson, Florida, worked with Ron’s wife, Diane, to come up with the fabrics, colors, and arrangement.

The final step in the process was bodywork and the beautiful Matrix root beer metallic paintjob, done by his friend Whitey Molnar. Although it doesn’t look it, the sophisticated paintjob was done in a makeshift paint booth at home and became the perfect complement to the rustic brown leather interior. Molnar sprayed the truck in separate pieces, ensuring that the bottom was just as detailed as the top. The truck was an eight-year build finished last year. Smiling, Ron says, “It would have been completed a lot quicker if everything fit but then I would have missed out on all that aggravation! In the end, I am really happy about the way it turned out.” Now that he has about 700 miles on the truck, Ron has already turned his attention to working on the third Porter custom, a 1947 five-window that will probably find its way to these pages soon (depending on how things fit, of course!).
