Today, advocates for Marcellus “Khaliifah” Williams gathered outside the Missouri Supreme Court, where his appeal was heard in a final attempt to halt his execution scheduled for tomorrow, September 24th. This appeal hearing represents one of the last legal avenues to save the life of a man who has been wrongfully convicted for over 20 years.
Williams was sentenced to death in 2001 for the 1998 murder of former Post-Dispatch reporter Felicia Gayle, a crime for which DNA evidence now proves his innocence. Yet, despite this crucial evidence, Missouri courts and the state’s Attorney General persist in their efforts to carry out this state-sanctioned murder, exemplifying the ongoing legacy of racial violence within the American carceral, punishment system.
Michelle Smith, Co-Director of Missourians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty (MADP), emphasized the injustice surrounding the case. “Finality of a judgment overrides a human person’s life?” She stated in response to comments made by Attorney General where he stated there has to be some finality to a court decision. “That is problematic for me, Nothing should be above actual justice,” Smith said.

If you're having an issue with communications, Stephanie Whitaker, Communications Director, has an email here [email protected]. Jonathan Shifletts Deputy Comms/Press Sec, [email protected] · Phone, work cell: 573-508-4323
Tammy Allee, Executive Assistant, and Evan Rodriguez, General Counsel, for Gov. Mike Parson’s office have disconnected their lines. Kelli Jones, DCS has not. Call 573-751-3222, Press 4 once prompted and key in 56637 53554 to urge them to not execute Marcellus Williams.

Lavander Languages! (Queer Languages)
Lavander Languages are ways of speaking adopted by the queer community, sex workers and people of color. Often times they were used as code in order to be safe in a world where people want to bury us.
"Lavender languages" are the (anti-)languages, cants and slang created and used by LGBT+ communities. Throughout history, people have used a myriad of secret signs and symbols to identify themselves to other members of their community while avoiding detection (and thus danger), but perhaps none are so intricate as lavender languages.
These languages all have a few things in common. First, they are used by a community that needs secrecy for safety. Second, they are influenced by a variety of languages, but especially languages spoken by other oppressed classes. And third, as they become well-known by those outside of our communities, their purpose is lost.
Polari
When homosexuality was illegal in the United Kingdom, people had to be very careful about who they could trust. One way of figuring out if a stranger was gay or bisexual was to use a Polari word in conversation; if they responded in kind, you were safe, as the film above demonstrates. Polari was also useful for conducting conversations safely in the open - if anyone overheard, they would have either heard gibberish, or, understanding Polari, would be a friend and ally.
As a cant, Polari is fascinating. You can tell so much about British culture through to 1960s - and the LGBT+ community's place in it - simply by tracing its origins and influences.
Tagalog Beki Language (Swardspeak)
Also known as Bekinese, Bekimon, and more recently gayspeak, Swardspeak is spoken in the Philippines by the gay community. According to Jon Shadel, gayspeak is a mixture ofTagalog, English, Spanish, and a little bit of Japanese, along with regional influences. Gayspeak is an amazingly camp, hilarious language.
Many terms come from the names of celebrities, brands and a cornucopia of other colorful sources. “Walang Julanis Morisette,” for instance, translates to “there’s no rain,” a play on a lyric from Alanis Morissette’s single “Ironic”—“it’s like rain on your wedding day.” It is language as pun, as inside joke, as subversion—and it is as metaphorical as it is ephemeral.
Lubunca
Lubunca has been spoken in Turkey since the early 1900s. It too is a language born of necessity; "LGBTQ sex workers, particularly transwomen" created Lubunca to be able to communicate safely with each other. Like Polari, Lubunca has been influenced by Romani (both the Romani and sex workers were segregated and pushed to the fringe of society, thus occupying the same space where language flowed freely), and there are also elements of Kurdish, Greek, and Bulgarian.
Like gayspeak of the Philippines, Lubunca has continued to adapt in response to mainstream familiarity. Dalia Mortada writes that "because certain words have become so mainstream, they are no longer used in the sex work community". One former sex worker she interviewed spoke of girls inventing new words as needed, simply saying: "it evolves".
IsiNgqumo
Thought to be influenced by Sesotho and Nguni or isiZulu (all of which fall under the Bantu language umbrella). IsiNgqumo has been described as "extensive and colourful", a cant that "incorporates many languages and styles...the sophistication and pervasiveness of isingqumo is an indication of the developed nature of black gay subculture and its rootedness in South African Black townships on the reef." Stephanie Rudwick & Mduduzi Ntuli provide an example of isiNgqumo: "Awu, dali, awukopit ucako akasalele kanje dali"; [wow, darling, can’t you see this cute guy, what a darling].
Gayle
Gayle is usually spoken by gay descendants of colonial settlers in South Africa. It is influenced by English and Afrikaans. Gayle has been traced to the 1950s, and interestingly has been influenced by Polari, using some of the same words.
Gayle uses women's names for words with the same first letter: "Carol" means cry, "Lulu" means laugh, and "Monica" means money. "Gail", funnily enough, means "chat".
Oxtchit
An Israeli Gay Lexicon, that comes from the word “oxtchot” used to describe young, effeminate gay men of
Middle Eastern or North African descent. Oxchot (and therfore oxchit) is a term original to Hebrew that is most likely derived from the Arabic for “my sister”.
It is is usually characterized in terms of exaggeratedly high speaking pitch, wide pitch ranges and high levels of pitch dynamism all laid over a distinct and unique set of lexical items.
Pajubá
A secret language spoken by black brazillian Transwomen and Travestis.
A mix of the African language Yoruba and Portuguese, Pajubá is a secret language that works sometimes as a protective shield, sometimes as a weapon. One of the many queer languages of the world, Pajubá is unique in its outrageous performance of femininity.
English, Spanish, and French worda are also borrowed in Pajubá. Likewise Portuguese words are used with double meaning.
Born in Terrarios, places of wordship for afro-brazilian religious practices, Pajubá means gossip or news, there's a great emphasis on body language with an over-the-top, camp, feminine performance.
Bahasa Binan
Bahasa Binan (or bahasa Béncong) is a distinctive Indonesian speech variety originating from the gay community. It has several regular patterns of word formation and is documented in both writing and speech.
One pattern of word formation modifies standard Indonesian roots (normally composed of two syllables) to have e as the first vowel and ong closing the second syllable—hence providing regular assonance with the standard Indonesian word bencong [ˈbɛntʃɔŋ], a male homosexual, trans woman, or male crossdresser. Another word formation pattern adds -in- infixes to other Indonesian roots. The best example is the word binan itself, formed with the word banci, "male transvestite", to which the -in- infix has been added and from which the second syllable -ci has been dropped.
Bahasa Binan also uses a range of standard Indonesian words with altered meaning.

Twitter reacts to R. Kelly’s guilty verdict
The embattled singer was found guilty of racketeering and sex trafficking in a New York federal court.

Today (Sept. 27), it’s been announced that the jury overseeing R. Kelly’s trial have reached a decision. The embattled singer was found guilty of all charges related to racketeering and sex trafficking. The verdict follows six weeks of testimony from R. Kelly’s accusers, as well as former employees that have worked under him. As previously reported by REVOLT, the jury, consisting of seven men and five women, heard from dozens of witnesses for a little more than three weeks.
Kelly — who’s full name is Robert Sylvester Kelly— was arrested by U.S. Homeland Security and the NYPD in Chicago back in July of 2019, months after being hit with 10 charges related to aggravated criminal sexual abuse. A day after said arrest, the number of charges then increased to 18, and included child sexual exploitation, child pornography production, kidnapping, forced labor, racketeering, and obstruction of justice. Additional filings in Chicago and New York raised that number again to 22 in February and March of last year.
For many, the jury’s decision helps to add closure to a saga that has lasted for decades, beginning with R. Kelly’s relationship with the late singer Aaliyah. In January of 2019, Dream Hampton teamed up with Joel Karsberg, Jesse Daniels, and Tamra Simmons to executive produce the Lifetime documentary “Surviving R. Kelly,” which detailed Kelly’s past sexual abuse allegations and saw appearances from artists like Chance The Rapper, John Legend, and Stephanie “Sparkle” Edwards throughout. Since that series premiered, several of Kelly’s former collaborators condemned him in response — RCA Records subsequently dissolved their working relationship with him. Kelly later sat down with Gayle King for a “CBS This Morning” interview, where he vehemently and emotionally denied all of the allegations and charges made against him.
Check out some Twitter reactions to R. Kelly’s guilty verdict below.

Tina Turner's Life in Photos
Tina Turner's 50-year career was one of the most prolific in music history. Following her death at age 83, take a look back at her life in photos
By Stephanie Sengwe Updated on May 24, 2023 03:43PM EDT
Tina Turner's Early Life

Born Anna Mae Bullock on Nov. 26, 1939, Tina Turner came from humble beginnings. Her parents were struggling sharecroppers, who split up when she was 11 years old and left Tina and her sister, Alline, to be raised by their grandmother in Nutbush, Tennessee. Her father would go on to remarry shortly thereafter, while her mother moved to St. Louis after leaving the abusive marriage.
After her grandmother died when she was 16, Tina also moved to St. Louis. It was there where she got involved in the music scene and met her future husband, Ike Turner.
Tina Turner's Star Turn

In 1965, during a performance with his former band, Kings of Rhythm, Ike called on the then-17-year-old Tina to sing onstage. Enamored by her innate stage presence and raspy vocals, Ike was keen to develop her budding talent and allowed her to hang around the band.
Preparation met opportunity when the singer who was booked to record "A Fool in Love" didn't show up for the recording session, and Tina rose to the occasion.
"A Fool in Love" was an instant hit and Ike realized he needed Tina in his troupe. He changed her name to Tina Turner and she became the lead vocalist for what became known as Ike & Tina Turner Revue.
Ike and Tina Turner's Marriage

Though Ike and Tina's relationship was platonic at first, with Tina admitting in the HBO Max documentary, Tina, she viewed him as a big brother, their connection gradually escalated to romance and they got married in 1962.
But their union was no sweeping love story. For one, the pair got married in Tijuana in a ceremony the "Proud Mary" singer found out about the same day.
"When Ike asked me to marry him, I knew it was for a reason," she told Gayle King in an interview for CBS Good Morning. "But I had to say yes, I knew, or it was going to be a fight."
Ike was famously abusive and the marriage ultimately ended in divorce 16 years later.
Tina Turner's 'Proud Mary'

While the association between "Proud Mary" and Tina is indelible, the song is actually not an original Ike and Tina record.
According to Biography.com, the song was written by John Fogerty, lead singer of the band Creedence Clearwater Revival, in 1967 and became a crowd favorite when Ike and Tina Turner Revue would perform.
As the duo was working on their second album, Workin' Together, Tina suggested Ike add the song since it had so much success on the road. Ike added the famed guitar riffs and other production elements to make it the hit we know today.
"Proud Mary" reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 5 on the R&B chart in 1971, Biography.com reports. The song sold more than 1 million copies and earned the duo a Grammy Award for best R&B vocal performance by a group.
Tina Turner Reclaims Her Name

You" singer chose not to fight over any of the assets they had accrued together, though she did want the rights to her stage name, which she won.
Tina Turner's Comeback

After divorcing Ike, Tina found herself in financial arrears. Not only were there business debts to settle, she was also in charge of the four kids the couple shared as proceedings dragged on.
To make ends meet, she went back on tour and began her comeback performing covers.
In 1983, she was signed to Capitol Records, with whom she released Private Dancer. The album housed hits such as the titular song, "Private Dancer," "What's Love Got to Do With It," and "Better Be Good to Me."
The album earned three Grammy Awards and has been dubbed one of the biggest comebacks in music history.
Tina Turner's Private Dancer Tour

Following the release of the hit album, Tina embarked on a tour from February 1985 to December 1985. The Private Dancer tour encompassed a whopping 182 dates throughout Europe, North America, Australia and Asia.
Tina Turner Headlines the Super Bowl XXXIV Halftime Show

In 2000, Tina lit up the stage at The Georgia Dome in Atlanta when she headlined the Super Bowl halftime show that year. It would be one of her last performances before she went on hiatus for a few years.
Tina Turner at the Kennedy Center Honors

In 2005, Tina was among one of the artists who received a Kennedy Center Honor for her contribution to the culture. In her class were other legends such as Robert Redford, Tony Bennett, Suzanne Farrell and Julie Harris.
Tina Turner Finds Love Again

In 2013, Tina tied the knot with her long-term beau, music producer Erwin Bach, after 27 years together. They spent their time quietly together in Zurich, Switzerland.
The pair first met in 1986 at Cologne Bonn Airport where Bach was assigned to pick the singer up. The connection was instantaneous.
"He was [16 years] younger [than me]. He was 30 years old at the time and had the prettiest face. I mean, you cannot [describe] it," Tina stated in an HBO Max documentary about her life. "It was like insane. [I thought], 'Where did he come from?' He was really so good-looking. My heart [was beating fast] and it means that a soul has met, and my hands were shaking."
Tina Turner's 50th Anniversary Tour

After taking some much-deserved time off — eight years away from the public eye, to be exact — Tina announced while on The Oprah Show that she'd be hitting the stage one more time. She was 68.
The 50th Anniversary Tour began in October 2008 and went through May 2009 with a total of 84 sold-out dates across North America and Europe.
This would be her final tour, as she announced her retirement once the tour wrapped.
Tina Turner on Broadway

In 2018, the living legend made one last foray into the public eye when Tina: The Tina Turner Musical premiered on Broadway. Like What's Love Got to Do With It — a 1993 film following Tina's life in the spotlight — the play chronicled her illustrious life and career, but focused more on her comeback era and mega hits.
Tina Turner: A Career for the Ages

Throughout her five-decade-long career, Tina amassed a slew of awards, including eight Grammys, three AMAs, seven Billboard Music Awards and many more.
She received three Grammy Hall of Fame Awards for "What's Love Got to Do With It," "River Deep, Mountain High" and "Proud Mary."
She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice — the first time in 1991 with Ike, and the second time in 2021, weeks ahead of her 82nd birthday.
On May 24, 2023, Tina died at age 83 after a long illness at her home in Küsnacht near Zurich, Switzerland.
“With her, the world loses a music legend and a role model,” her spokesperson, Bernard Doherty, said in a statement.

Writer 911: What’s Your Emergency?
Writer 911: What’s Your Emergency?
This past week I’ve heard from a lot of writer friends who are having a tough time, mostly with their writing. As one friend put it, “hard to write with all this treason.”
It got me to imagining a 911-type number for struggling writers. This service would be staffed by real authors, and it would go a little something like this… (more…)

What are you reading right now? Anything good?
i’m pretty hesitant to try to judge a book before the finish, especially as that is where so many stories fall apart, but i can give you my impressions so far of everything i’ve got going at the moment!
it, by stephen king (pg 251/1156). as you can see, i am not that far in. i started this one and the next towards the start of november, then life conspired for a few weeks to distract me from them. so far though, i’d have to say that i think this is going to be one of the stephen king books i really enjoy. he’s a pretty evenly split author for me; i’d say i’ve read about eight of his books? and i’ve hated four and loved four. when he’s on, he’s on and when he’s off? he’s just really, really off. this one has been giving me some serious the stand vibes though, in the sense that it’s a whole complete world with a handful of branching characters that you cannot wait to intersect with each other, and considering the stand is my absolute favorite stephen king book (and also just one of my favorite books in general), i am LOVING this so far. it’s well-written and encompasses an entire universe, both derry and the characters populating it feel very real, which is always something i really like when i’m reading. that feeling that you could drop me into the pages and i wouldn’t feel lost because i have a real sense of the place.
the goldfinch, by donna tartt (pg 233/771). stalking donna tartt’s work (after reading and loving the secret history), i would say, has only paid off for me so far. i adore her writing. granted, it tends to take me a while because her work is admittedly pretty dense, but it’s proven to be worth it up to this point. she is such a wonderful writer and the richness of her worlds and characters is really a treat!
idyll fears, by stephanie gayle (pg 123/320). i think this is my favorite thing i’m reading at the current moment. it’s the sequel to idyll threats, which i enjoyed a bunch (and this is shaping up to be even better!), and it’s hard to be at work and not reading it honestly. i’ve been trying to figure out what it is that i love about it so much (i mean, the LGBT aspect is an obvious draw of course but i read a lot of LGBT stuff and don’t have this reaction to it) because really it’s not that different from other detective/small-town cop mysteries and i think what it really is, is that it’s a test. everything in it is testing whether or not people are inherently good, whether they can rise above and be better. not just: can people in a dimmer decade when it comes to LGBT-acceptance put aside their homophobia and see our protagonist as a person and not a sexuality but also smaller battles, can people with past grudges with police get past that to work with them now, etc. i know what i want the answer to be, i know that what i need/want/am desperate to see: that people can coexist in harmony despite their differences because very few people are painted as bad, even if they’re wrong, which means their opinions can evolve because their core isn’t evil and i just--i really, really want to see that (and it’s written with a very caring hand, which means i’m hopeful it’s coming) so it’s hard to put the book down before i get to!
playlist for the dead, by michelle falkoff (pg. 106/304). okay, so, pretty much every young adult/contemporary book i pick up is there to kind of ease my brain into sleep at the end of the day. it’s a palette cleanse, doesn’t take a lot of processing power and is almost always big text, lotsa dialogue, and just plain easy, so i’m even less cool about judging these because i have literally no expectations for them. i don’t want to say it’s good just because it fits the criteria of being an easy-ass read like i wanted, y’know? plus, ya books, for me, really live or die as a totality. it’s harder to judge them in part because it’s usually a story-focus first, rather than characters or writing, and you can’t know how that all hangs together until... you know how that all hangs together, right? but, uh, so far so good? i really like the way the chapters are split by the songs on the playlist and i’m not annoyed by any of the characters at all yet (which happens pretty immediately in quite a few of these things i pick up) but i probably won’t remember anything about it in a week or two? that said, it’s serving its purpose perfectly and it’s not something i dread getting to at all (as also sometimes happens).
hope this is what you were looking for, nonnymoose!
#stephen king#it#the goldfinch#donna tartt#idyll threats#playlist for the dead#stephanie gayle#michelle falkoff#i know you were probably thinking you'd get one book dude lol#but i'm literally always reading four#also you're lucky nonster you JUST caught me as i uncrazied myself reading-wise!#i stopped reading for a few months (as i do pretty often)#but my reading goal this year is INsane#so i had to play catch-up by throwing a SHIT-TON of novellas and poetry at the problem haha#i just got back to regular reading about a week or two ago with the new wtnv novel#ANYWHO i think i picked good books this time around#especially since i COULD NOT figure out what i wanted for SO LONG (which NEVER happens!)#the picking it the best part! and i was stuuuuuuumped#but yeah take all this with a grain of salt since i'm not done yet and could end up really hating all of these lol#!ask#Anonymous
