Big Hero 6

As the first animated Disney film based on a Marvel Comics property (though it has no connection to the Marvel Cinematic Universe), Big Hero 6 features gender and racial-based diversity that is very much needed for the largely white, male-dominated superhero scene - and it’s pro science and technology!

The film follows Hiro Hamada, a 14-year-old, Asian scientific prodigy living in the futuristic city, San Fransokyo. Immediately, having an Asian main character is something that is still very novel for both Disney and Marvel. Hiro is extremely gifted in the field of robotics, and uses this to his advantage in the city’s underground, illegal bot fighting tournaments. Hiro’s brother Tadashi eventually brings him to his college, where Hiro creates microbots capable of forming into any shape or structure imaginable - and this is where he eventually meets Tadashi’s creation, Baymax, an inflatable medical robot.

Baymax himself is an interesting character, primarily because he’s an AI built to serve anyone who needs his medical attention. This is definitely one of the few times we have seen examples of AI that are entirely positive and uncomplicated, as well as not dangerous or corruptible (think I, Robot or 2001: A Space Odyssey). Even more interesting is Baymax’s approach to helping Hiro - when his brother dies, Baymax asks him questions about his brother’s death in an attempt to stabilize him emotionally, acting as kind of a deadpan therapist for Hiro with a sweet, Siri-esque literalism. It’s significant that Disney would acknowledge the importance of mental health in this way, as Baymax tries to help Hiro come to terms with his grief and anger. Baymax is also equipped to fight - an endless source of humor later in the movie as he is, by nature, a healing robot. When Hiro assembles his team, Baymax’s pillowy round body is stuffed into a suit of armor of sorts and he is given new purpose.

Perhaps most importantly, Big Hero 6 is about the assembling of a new team of heroes - this time, a much more diverse set than we have seen for years through Marvel’s The Avengers and other superhero films. Their team consists of: laser expert Wasabi, speedster Gogo Tomaga, chemical engineer Honey Lemon, and school mascot/monster enthusiast Fred. This team is diverse in the best way - it contains a broad spectrum of personalities and interests, it has members of various racial and gender categories, it doesn’t rely on stereotypes to tell their stories or show who they are, and their powers actually stem from their scientific interests! Wasabi is a muscular neat freak laser cutter, Gogo is a no-nonsense adrenaline junkie and speed demon on wheels, Honey Lemon is a bubbly chemical engineer with a weaponized purse, and Fred is laid-back but with a fire-breathing monster suit. Gogo’s battle cry is, “Woman up,” and is used no matter who she’s talking to - yet another fantastic way of empowering women in this film.

It has also been a long time since a kids’ film, Disney or otherwise, had such passion and enthusiasm for science and technology - Big Hero 6 combines chemicals, robots, magnets, elements, and all other manner of technical wizardry in a way that we don’t see very much in movies aimed primarily at children. And hopefully, exposing kids to such a positive look at STEM and showing scientists as diverse and interesting will inspire them to become scientists themselves, and maybe even foster a newfound love of science in people of all ages who watch the movie.
