In honour of Black History Month, here is the story of the extraordinary American Plant Scientist George Washington Carver. He was born into slavery in the USA and through hard work and education became an influential agricultural reformer, science communicator, and economic botany researcher. GW Carver grew up in rural Missouri, USA, and had an early affinity for plants as well as a hunger for learning. He studied botany at Iowa State University and became the first Black faculty member at this university. At the Tuskegee University, he headed the Agricultural department and researched environmentally friendly farming methods such as crop rotation with legume crops like peanuts. Although he did not personally invent peanut butter, he promoted the South American crop’s nutritional benefits to help public health. He also researched many plant diseases and studied new ways to use plant products in medicine. The last two decades of his life saw him become a household name on both sides of the Atlantic, where he gave public lectures on plant biology, new uses of peanuts and sweet potatoes, organic farming, racial harmony, and education for Black Americans. He was a lifelong bachelor and a devout Christian in addition to his passion for plants. Although he suffered from delicate health his whole life, he had a strong spirit and an indomitable drive to leave the world a better place than he found it. #georgewashingtoncarver #blackhistory #juneteenth #blackamericans #africanamericans #blackculture #scientist #greatscientists #plantbiology #plantscience #botany #agriculture #famousscientists #blackscientist #pocinstem #katia_plantscientist #blackhistorymonth #blackexcellence #blackhistory #botany #poc #blackscientist #scientist #inspirational

#Repost @kinkysudz I had this beer during the latest and first streamyard streamed episode of @blacknerdfridays. This beer was brewed by @dubco_ and is called Abuse of Science 2. This beer is an Imperial IPA sitting at 11% ABV. This beer was a bright apricot . Well drinking the beer and reflecting on the name abuse of science, it made me think about the atrocities that Black people have endured at the hands of science leading to mistrust of science within the Black community. When one learns about Tuskegee Experiment where Black men had their syphilis untreated to investigate its long term effects even after treatment was widely available (this experiment ran for 40 years) or the father of Gynecology experimenting on enslaved Black women without anesthesia, or the fact that Henrietta Lacks cervical cells were taken without consent and was used in research leading to the discovery of many therapies and Nobel prizes - it's not hard to see why the mistrust is there. . But in addition to these, we also see old paradigms still influencing our modern medical system - race factor in equations used in many lab tests used to diagnosis diseases, Black mothers being ignored and dying due to the idea that they feel less pain, socioeconomic difficulties in accessing medical care. The list goes on and on. . As a former scientist and currently working in the clinical trial field, I've strived to be a voice that holds these companies accountable. With thousands of clinical trials being held, Blacks only represent ~5% of participants yet they push these drugs on Black people without proper testing of safety and efficacy. At my current job, I help design studies that are patient centric - are we going to diverse communities, are we providing compensation and support, are we being transparent about the trial? Just like breweries many pharma companies are pushing D&I initiatives and I plan to hold them accountable! . . #kinkysudz #blackpeoplelovebeer #blackstories #blackhistory #blackscientist #clinicaltrials #blackatrocities #abuseofscience #diversity #trueinclusion #neverfotget #forgottenhistory #talkitliveit #seeushearus #dubco #ipas #craftbeerjunkie #blacknerdfridays https://www.instagram.com/p/COvZ6uvrW5c/?igshid=9gunvip4r6cv

Black History Fact: Even at the age of eighteen, Katherine Johnson graduated from college. She oversaw NASA's calculations that put astronauts in orbit in the 1960s and on the moon in 1969. There was a book and film about Johnson's story that year. Johnston began teaching math and French in the late 1930s. The National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics hired "computers" in 1952 to perform and double-check technological calculations. Johnson was hired at Hampton's Langley Research Center. Johnson surprised her superiors with her curiosity and boldness. "The women did as instructed." “They didn't ask any questions.” A human into space was one of Johnson's tasks when NACA reformed into NASA in 1958. The following year, she remarried Navy and Army commander James A. Johnson. "The early trajectory was a parabola," Johnson said. In the beginning, they stated where they wanted the capsule to fall. 'Allow me.' Numerous awards were given to Johnson. His achievements include the NASA Lunar Orbiter Spacecraft and Operations team award in 1967 and the National Technical Association's Mathematician of the Year award in 1997. Awarded honorary degrees from SUNY Farmingdale, Capitol College in Maryland, Old Dominion, and West Virginia University. Goble fathered Joyette, Katherine, and Constance Johnson. Johnson died on Feb. 24, 2020. She was 101. A QUESTION FOR EVERYONE... WAS SCIENCE ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE SUBJECTS IN SCHOOL? WHAT IS ONE FOND MEMORY YOU CAN SHARE? Please like, comment, and share this post. Happy Juneteenth 2022! This holiday commemorates the day in 1865 when the Black American slaves were emancipated in the USA.

#FabulousFacultyFriday Let’s hope some of these future scientists come to #SeahawkNation for 2 years then transfer to a 4 year university #STEM 🧪 🧬⚗️🔬 Repost from @stembeez • Today we celebrate Shari Campbell, our co-founder! . Shari has her Bachelors degree in Biochemistry and a Master's degree in Microbiology and Cell Science. . She created STEMBeez with her friend to help bring STEM education in a real applicable way. A hands-on lab focused approach that engages students to understand theory based concepts. . @bcsouthcampus @browardcollege have been instrumental in helping STEMBeez get it's footing and we would like to take a moment to say thank you! Our first STEM Camp was held here! See some pictures in our IG Story for some throwbacks!! . Since the pandemic, STEMBeez is still focused on getting STEM education out to the world. Last year, we held a FREE 6 week STEM camp, VIRTUALLY!!! It was so much fun! We maintained our curriculum and added some fun things like a lab manual so students can repeat the exercises. We sent the supplies to students homes, free of charge, and held bi-weekly Zoom sessions to the students. With the help of our sponsors, this event was a success! . We are repeating our efforts this year with a virtual camp so that students and parents can be home safe during the Pandemic. Stay tuned for details! . This post is also special because it is Shari's Bday today!!🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳 Happy Birthday Shari, enjoy your day! @datgyalascientist . #blackhistorymonth #science #blackscientist #blackgirlmagic #blackchemist #friday #girlsinstem #womeninstem #WomenInMedicine #stembeez #blackgirlsrock #womenownedbusiness #knowledgeispower #education (at Broward College South Campus) https://www.instagram.com/p/CLNWDdFLrTK/?igshid=6bqarw75rbuw

Black History Fact: Alice Ball, an African American chemist, was the first to discover a cure for Hansen's disease (leprosy). Ball was also the first African-American woman and the first African-American to receive a master's degree in chemistry from the College of Hawaii (now known as the University of Hawaii). Alice Augusta Ball was born in Seattle, Washington on July 24, 1892. She was the middle child in a family of three, with two older brothers and a younger sister. The family was comfortably middle-class. Ball tragically died at the age of 24 as a result of complications caused by breathing chlorine gas during a lab teaching accident. Because Dr. Arthur Dean, the president of the College of Hawaii, continued Ball's research without crediting her, she did not get to see the full impact of her discovery during her brief lifetime. Dean even took credit for her discovery, dubbing it the "Dean Method." Unfortunately, men were routinely given credit for women's discoveries. Dr. Harry T. Hollmann, the assistant surgeon at Kalihi Hospital who first pushed Ball to investigate chaulmoogra oil, published a paper six years after her death in 1922, finally giving Ball the credit she deserved. Despite this, Ball was largely forgotten in scientific history until recently. Former Hawaii Lieutenant Governor Mazie Hirono has also declared February 29 to be "Alice Ball Day." #365DaysOfBlackHistory #BlackHistoryFacts #AliceBall #BlackScientist #Leprosy #ShowThyselfApproved #KnowledgeIsPower #EachOneTeachOne #BLM (at Rise Up Financial Freedom Solutions LLC) https://www.instagram.com/p/CR39O-rLckc/?utm_medium=tumblr

The Doctor With an Eye for Eyes: The Story of Dr. Patricia Bath by Julia Finley Mosca and Daniel Rieley I love the word craft of fun rhyming books - but when one is also about a groundbreaking Black doctor-inventor? Yes please! This book centers the inspiring Dr. Patricia Bath, starting from her childhood, where her parents supported her interests in all areas, though at the time many of these were considered boy-only pursuits. This freedom of gender expression allowed the young Bath to explore her interests in science. Though girls - especially Black girls - from her low socioeconomic neighborhood were viewed as unable to achieve educationally or professionally, Bath proved them wrong when she graduated high school in only three years and started her career as an opthamologist. When she noticed that Black patients had vision issues two times as often as white ones, she became determined to change this injustice through preventative eye care and innovative techniques. She invented a device for laser eye surgery, the first feasible laser technique to exist! Today, Bath teaches, writes, and continues to advocate for everyone's right to sight. This book is simultaneously simple enough for the smallest kids and informative and inspiring enough for adults - a fantastic addition to the too-small world of girl-and-Poc centered STEM books. #girlsinstem #girlsinsteam #girlsread #girlpower #blackscientist #blackinstem #opthamologist #sciencebooksforkids #sciencekids #rolemodels #biographiesforkids #kidsbiographies #childrensliterature #childrensbooks #diversekidlit #diversechildrensliterature #diversechildrensbooks #womeninstem #rhymingbooks https://www.instagram.com/p/CIt7YxYBVNN/?igshid=1p2avdkdx6g8b
