Technically I could google it, but what’s the deal with the new 52, and flashpoint, and rebirth etc… I think you’ve mentioned before that Kon has several different origins and stuff… wild.

so technically kon has one main origin that's just been altered by a couple of retcons, and then there's just a whole entire Other Fucking Guy dc made up and also named kon-el because they hate happiness. i'll get to that in a second sdfhdkjs

SO. "new 52", "precrisis", "postcrisis", and "rebirth" all refer to different periods of dc continuity! precrisis is the oldest and refers to comics written before crisis on infinite earths (1985). when anyone refers to "the crisis" you can generally assume they mean coie, as it's the Most Significant one. coie's meta purpose was to consolidate all of the timelines and not-really-in-continuity stories into a more cohesive overall dc universe.

thus we ended in the postcrisis universe, also known as new earth (after all the fuckery ended and some timelines kinda reset etc etc). a lot of titles like superman, wonder woman, etc., got relaunched in 1987 after coie ended. this is frankly, in my and also many other people's opinions, dc's best era (1987 - 2011); this is where we got storylines like the death and return of superman, saw characters like the cast of young justice '98 introduced, and followed a lot of different characters as they grew and developed, such as tim drake moving from 200+ issues of robin towards a new mantle (red robin) towards the end of the era.

unfortunately, for some reason, this guy working at dc named dan didio who was just like absolute god at coming up with terrible ideas, was like. hey so the timeline's getting cluttered and complicated again. i know what we need to do. another entire fucking universe reset! and this time we'll just absolutely bungle it. i'm talking edgier characterizations. throwing out established character relationships and dynamics. edgier everything actually. this will be fucking awesome.

spoiler alert it was not fucking awesome. this was the new 52 and it was massively unpopular. it was kicked off by an event called flashpoint (this is why sometimes you will see people referring to pre-n52 as pre-flashpoint). sales were pretty Not Stellar. it was a fucking mess with absolutely no preplanning or anything. for more on what a shitshow n52 was, here's an article.

and so new 52 kon specifically? yeah. not a clone of superman. a clone of some other guy (specifically, an alternate universe son of superman and lois lane named jon lane kent). this is where the "kon means abomination" thing came from (the author is scott lobdell and i throw tomatoes at him in my mind on the daily, for this and many many other crimes). it does not apply to main continuity kon because it got retconned out of existence and also literally did not happen to him because n52 kon is an Entirely Different Fucking Guy.

so all of five years after n52 happened, dc was like. okay everyone hates this and wants the postcrisis continuity back. uhhhh... okay! and so in 2016 they launched rebirth, also known as prime earth, in a story that more or less just undid flashpoint except not exactly. this restored a lot of the general broad strokes of postcrisis continuity (except where it didn't, and boy did a lot of things fall through those cracks, such as... the entire kon-el. he was not in continuity at all until young justice (2019). he just simply didn't exist anymore until this guy bendis was like well wait a minute we should bring that guy back! and proceeded to do it in the stupidest way possible... but i digress.)

thus kon really only has one origin: reign of the supermen. there have been some retcons that change the details of that origin (due to the byrne era "last son of krypton" mandate, the relaxation of that mandate, and then geoff johns being fucking stupid, in that order), but overall his origin has not changed. it's just that there is also some other guy out there named kon-el (who is.. currently not in continuity? i think? i don't really know. i haven't read any n52 superboy/titans stuff bc i was like well that's not my kon so i don't care slkdjf but i'll probably get there one day or another...)

Swiss’ eyes follow the movement of Aether’s fingers as they continue to dance, envying his fucking shin that he’s touching it so casually and not putting those fingers to use on his body. More pre leaks out, the splatter of it hitting the ground sounds like an explosion in the quiet room. His nerves feel frayed as he grips his hands tightly behind his back, claws digging into his palm hard enough to draw blood. His amethyst eyes sparking with the quintessence magic that courses beneath his skin. Swiss keens, fighting every urge in his body to drop to his knees and beg the ghoul to fuck him into oblivion. 

He knows that won’t work, has tried it before with no success. If it was Dew, he’d watch the fire ghoul’s eyes light up in ecstasy, sparing no time to break the scene and fuck Swiss into the next dimension. Mountain would have taken pity on him fifteen minutes in, spending the rest of the time opening him up carefully to prepare for his monster cock. Hell, even Rain, who has a hidden mean streak of his own, and a well-deserved one at that, wouldn’t commit for this long. But Aether has a sense of control that he envies. He loves feeling completely in thrall and letting him take the reins. 

“Pathetic little Swiss with his pathetic little cock. I bet you’ve never been able to please someone with that. I could fit the entire thing into my mouth and not even feel it. The Story of Eve’s journey

Stellar Blade follows the journey of Eve, a warrior who descends from an off-world Colony to defeat the Naytibas, humanity’s enemy that suddenly emerged on Earth. The Naytibas appear to be attacking the human race at the will of a higher entity composed of Alpha and an Elder, but no one really knows about their origin.

The first signs of a new remake of The Forsyte Saga appeared on production listings at the beginning of April 2024. While there had been rumors before about the series returning to television, the pre-production announcements were the first sign the project was getting off the ground, with Mammoth Productions most likely behind it. However, it was unclear if the show was a BBC series, an ITV series, or a series made for PBS or Masterpiece, or a combination thereof. But with filming now about to get underway, details are out, and Masterpiece is the one taking the lead on the project, with a stellar cast lined up to star.

The Forsyte Saga is considered the British period piece that allowed the WGBH folks to launch the Masterpiece anthology series as PBS launched nationwide. The series was first aired in the U.K. on the recently launched BBC 2 in 1967, a network most TV viewers did not have yet. It proved so popular that it was rerun on BBC One a few months later, making it technically the first show to make the jump from network to network due to rising ratings. The series then transferred to the U.S. and aired on local PBS stations across the country (which were at that point not under a national umbrella as yet) and proved a massive hit, bringing in numbers that beat out the "Big Three" networks of NBC, CBS, and ABC. Its success proved an appetite for the best of British programming, presaging Masterpiece's launch two years later.

It's now 55 years later, and though Masterpiece aired a new version in 2002, nowadays, it is no longer just an importer. The streaming wars have made it so that the anthology series must co-produce and sometimes take the lead on commissioning shows. The choice to make its own The Forsyte Saga is unsurprising, considering the show's history and its reputation, which means that it has pulled in quite an impressive cast.

One reason Masterpiece has taken charge of the project? This way it can dictate how many seasons there are and when it is renewed. Make no mistake, this is planned as a multi-season venture. Here's the series logline:

The first season of six episodes follows the lives of the wealthy Forsyte family in 1880s London and is based on John Galsworthy’s Nobel Prize-winning tale of love, loyalty, ambition, and betrayal.

The series cast stars Francesca Annis (Flesh & Blood) as formidable Forsyte matriarch Ann; Stephen Moyer (Sexy Beast) as her eldest son, Jolyon Senior, head of the family stockbroking firm Forsyte & Co.; and Jack Davenport (Ten Percent) plays Ann’s competitive younger son James. The next generation down features Danny Griffin (The Gentlemen) as Jolyon Sr.'s bohemian son Jo, Tuppence Middleton (Downton Abbey) as Jo’s status-driven wife Frances, and Eleanor Tomlinson (Poldark) plays Louisa Byrne, a Soho dressmaker and Jo’s first love. Joshua Orpin (Titans) plays James’ shrewd and sometimes ruthless son, Soames; Millie Gibson (Doctor Who) is Irene, the dancer whom Soames falls in love with, and Tom Durant Pritchard (Miss Scarlet) plays Monty Dartie, James’ son-in-law.

Outside of the titular family, Josette Simon (Broadchurch) will play Mrs. Ellen Parker Barrington, a wealthy heiress and friend of the Forsyte family; Jamie Flatters (Liar) is architect Philip Bosinney, Owen Igiehon (Disclaimer) plays lawyer Isaac Cole, and last (but certainly not least), OG 1967 The Forsyte Saga star Susan Hampshire OBE plays Lady Carteret.

Debbie Horsfield (Sanctuary: A Witch's Tale) will pen all six episodes, with directors Meenu Gaur (Murder Is Easy) and Annetta Laufer (Get Millie Black) splitting helming duties and Sarah Lewis (The Long Shadow) producing. Horsfield and Gaur executive produce along with Sheena Bucktowonsing, Damien Timmer for Mammoth Screen, and Susanne Simpson for Masterpiece. 

The Forsyte Saga Season 1 is expected to debut on most PBS stations in 2025.

According to Statistics, Honkai Star Rail May Be Killing Genshin Impact.

Honkai Star Rail could potentially be one of the standout PC games of 2023, and I don't say this lightly. Its smooth release has drawn a significant amount of my gaming time, possibly even surpassing my affection for Diablo 4. This sci-fi adventure from HoYoverse is characterized by its breathtaking anime-style visuals and engaging turn-based combat. It's undeniably a success story. However, this success might have unintended consequences for HoYoverse and its sister title, Genshin Impact. A detailed analysis conducted by Naavik, a gaming research, consulting, and advisory firm, reveals that Honkai Star Rail's success may be causing a division within the HoYoverse gaming community. Using data from data.ai, the report indicates that Genshin Impact is struggling to maintain its player base because many players are migrating to Honkai instead. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8vPZrMFiZ4 According to Naavik's research, from its release on April 26th until August 2023, Honkai Star Rail generated approximately $1,089,208,633 in revenue (although this figure is estimated and not precise). The data also suggests that Honkai received twice as many downloads as Genshin did at launch. However, despite maintaining a larger player base, the two games' revenue after two months appears to be relatively similar. Naavik speculates that this could be because Honkai's monetization strategies might not be as effective, and they delve into the potential reasons for this. Other contributing factors to Honkai's successful launch include significant investments in TikTok and influencer marketing campaigns, along with an impressive pre-registration period. Regardless, it's evident that Honkai has made a strong entrance into the gaming scene. Nevertheless, this situation raises concerns about Honkai potentially cannibalizing Genshin's potential revenue, as players seem to be divided between the two games instead of playing both simultaneously. With Zenless Zone Zero on the horizon, there's potential for HoYoverse to further divide its player base, especially considering the impressive visuals of ZZZ. Double-peaked supernovae offer clues to pre-supernova outbursts

New research helps in understanding the evolution and final stages of massive stars, the role of binary interactions, and the mechanisms behind mass loss, which ultimately affect the properties of the resulting supernova and its remnant. This work also provides insight into the different progenitor masses and the scenarios that could lead to different types of mass loss, shedding light on the complex processes that govern the life cycles of massive stars.

The group of researchers offer constraints on the physical properties of these progenitors and suggests possible mass loss mechanisms, enhancing the understanding of stellar evolution and supernova diversity.

Dr. Shing-Chi Leung, an Assistant Professor of Physics at SUNY Polytechnic Institute, was one of the authors of the article titled "Probing Presupernova Mass Loss in Double-peaked Type Ibc Supernovae from the Zwicky Transient Facility," in a collaborative research project with the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) team. The ZTF is a telescope built in Palomar, California, primarily maintained by researchers at the California Institute of Technology (CalTech).

The article is published in the The Astrophysical Journal, and the project was led by CalTech graduate student Kaustav K. Das.

Supernovae are the explosion of stars. Depending on the progenitor, their brightness can evolve to its full brightness within 20—100 days after explosion, and then fade out in the dark sky again.

Traditionally, astronomers need to compare the night sky image with a reference image, and search for unexplained bright spots which could be candidates of supernovae. Then astronomers carry out follow-up observations to record the detailed evolution of the supernova optical signals. The process could be slow as it is not automated, where the long response time could miss out objects that evolve quickly.

The Zwicky Transient Factory is designed to resolve this difficulty with an automated real-time data reduction pipeline, a dedicated photometric follow-up telescope, and a full archive of all detected astronomical sources. This enables the capturing, classification and analysis of transient events in the sky to be continuously done. Since the launch of ZTF in 2017, the telescope has detected about 9,000 supernovae.

With the large number of newly discovered supernovae, a new class of supernovae has emerged. These supernovae feature no hydrogen or silicon in the ejecta (aka Type Ib/c supernovae) and a prominent double peak feature in its brightness, where the first peak occurs promptly about 10 days after explosion.

Normal supernovae mostly show one peak in its luminosity during the entire explosion. The double peak indicates that the star has an outburst phase prior to its final explosion. The outburst is like a "mini-explosion" which sends away some matter in the outskirt of the star. After the outburst, the final explosion occurs and the high-speed matter interacts with this previously ejected matter and creates the double peak signals that were observed.

"In the past, we know very occasionally such supernovae exist but we do not know if they are one-off events, or if there is a systematic picture behind these supernovae," Dr. Leung explained. "With the statistics supported by ZTF, we can believe that a robust mechanism is behind such outbursts. Then the question becomes: do we have a consistent picture to explain these outbursts while we can still explain ordinary supernovae?"

In this project, Dr. Leung studied his prior models where pre-supernova outburst is predicted. They found that the outburst parameter could be consistent with one less-common supernova class known as the Pulsational Pair-Instability Supernovae. However, this class of supernovae is also known to be rare. Thus, it is a matter of debate if this can be the full explanation of this unusual subclass together with the number of events.

"While the conclusion is currently open-ended, it is still exciting to know that supernovae can be more puzzling than we once thought about," said Dr. Leung.

"And we are expecting much more data [to be] available later this decade. The Rubin Observatory (formerly known as the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope) will be deployed in 2025 and the community is expecting to detect about 10 times more supernovae. Such a substantial amount of new data will certainly provide new insights for revealing the less-known side about supernova physics and these peculiar objects."
