My Boys Part 2 - Draco Malfoy x Reader

Warnings: It’s a bit long, Some of the scenes from the Deathly Hallows- you’ll know which one :)

Italics: The past

Part 1

"Could you just promise me that you’ll be safe?” Draco murmured, placing a chaste kiss to the palm of your hand.

The two of you were cuddled up together along the gentle shore of the Great Lake, listening to the ripples of the water. Some of your stray hairs flowed in the wind as you sat between Draco’s legs, pressed with your back against his torso. He held his arms around you for warmth, one around your shoulders and the other holding your hand.

You gazed up at him, “I can’t promise you that, Draco. My brother and I have a target on our heads.”

Rolling his eyes at the thought of your brother, he pressed a longing kiss to your exposed forehead and rested his cheek on the top of your head as you turned back to gaze at the glistening water. It was peaceful. The trees whistled along with the silent chirping of birds.

“I.. I don’t know how it’s going to end Y/N, but I can’t lose you. I just can’t.”

Your grabbed onto his loose hand, playing with the ring on his finger. “You won’t.”

Deep down you knew you couldn’t promise that. You can’t promise that nothing will happen to you. It was a week or so before the Battle of Hogwarts was coming into play.

“I’m more worried about you Draco,” you spoke again, this time sitting up and turning more to face him. You grabbed onto his wrist and pushed up his sleeve, revealing his dark mark to get a better look at it. He looked at it with shame.

“Don’t be,” he dismissed, “I’ll be alright.” He took his arm back, pushing his sleeve back down. He never liked talking about it.

“Draco, you stop right there!” you shouted angrily at the end of the hall. He kept walking.

Draco was heading who knows where to try and get away from you. He was hiding something. He never hid anything from you. Anything. You knew something was off the minute that he tried pushing you away

“Merlin so help me, Draco Lucius Malfoy if you don’t stop walking this instant we are DONE!” You yelled. He stopped right in his tracks. You were fuming.

You stomped up to him, put your hand on his shoulder, and roughly turned him around. You leaned back on your hip and crossed your arms. He didn’t look you in your eyes.

“Care to explain why you’ve been avoiding me? What do you have to hide huh?” you glared. “Look at me!”

His eyes darted up to yours. He was at a loss for words. Just a few students would pass by the two of you every now and then.

“Could we speak somewhere more private,” he spoke lowly.

“No. We’re going to talk here, now,” you stated. You didn’t want anymore of the bullshit. You tried your best to not imagine the worst, but it’s all that would come to mind.

He sighed through his nose, and ran his right arm through his hair. He was looking for the right words to say, however every time he opened his mouth to speak, he would shut it again. You were growing impatient.

“What is it that you aren’t telling me?! Are you cheating on me or something! Is it with Astoria?!” you shouted, holding back tears.

His eyes softened and he stepped towards you. He reached out to grab your hands, but you snapped them back and held onto your upper arms. He lowered his arms in defeat.

“I would never cheat on you, never,” he said. You wiped your teary eyes.

“Then?”

“Can we please go somewhere private,” he asked once more. You huffed through your nose and begrudgingly nodded.

He turned around and you trailed right behind him. He led the two of you all the way on the other side of Hogwarts to the Astronomy Tower. His favorite place to be with you.

“Y/N-”

“Cut to the chase already, Draco. I’m tired of waiting. If you’re going to break up with me just do-”

He stepped forward and pressed his lips to yours immediately, catching you off guard. His lips molded perfectly onto yours as you slowly, but hastily kissed him back. Being able to feel his warmth and presence made you very emotional. You couldn’t help it.

He pulled back and spoke. “I’m not cheating on you, I’m not breaking up with you, I’m in love with you,” he said bringing a blush to rise on your cheeks, “I’ve been wanting to tell you what’a been going on but I couldn’t find the right words.”

“Just tell me. You know there isn’t anything in the world that you wouldn’t be able to tell me.”

He sighed and extended his left arm to you. You looked at him in confusion. He raised his sleeve as your eyes trailed the Dark Mark on his forearm. You were at a loss of words. You never would have guessed.

“Draco..”

“I didn’t want it, I swear to you,” he frowned, “But I had to- my family..”

You shushed him and pulled him in for a tight embrace. He hugged you back, tight, afraid of letting you go like it was the last time. “I know you and your character Draco, you should’ve just came to me. I wouldn’t have looked at you any different.”

“I know. I’m sorry, forgive me my love?”

“Forgiven,” you said, swaying from side to side, never wanting to let him go.

“Will you though? He’s got you right where he wants you,” you frowned, sitting up and turning to face him. You knew Draco’s family has ties to Voldemort and he was reluctantly forced into it. The Draco you knew would never have been associated with him out of his free will. Never.

He didn’t have an answer. He, instead, embraced you once more.

"I wish we could run away and be free of all this mess,” you sighed into his chest.

“Me too,” he mumbled quietly.

You didn’t know how it was going to go, but you knew that you were going to stick through it all together.

The day of the battle, panic broke out in Hogwarts after hearing Voldemort’s messages.

Voldemort wants you and Harry to give yourselves up, but there is no way that is going to happen. You were beside Harry while it was all happening, not knowing where Draco was. His forehead stung while the side of your neck stung, where the scars were.

Some students, especially the younger ones, were running away, looking for a place to hide or to flee. Other students were preparing for the battle to help support the two of you.

The last time you saw Draco was when you were at Malfoy Manor, running away from his wicked aunt, Bellatrix, and escaped with the late-Dobby. It pained Draco to see you that day knowing that he couldn’t do much to protect you like he should.

All the students were on board for the most part, but your own house, the Slytherins, could not be trusted and were accompanied by Mr. Filch to the dungeons. It pained you to see this because you didn’t know what to do. You were lost in your own thoughts, too heavily clouded by your concern for Draco and his safety. You knew he didn’t intend to be a Death Eater, but he couldn’t switch sides, especially right now at this moment.

“Y/N!” Hermione shouted, “C’mon, we need to move!” She grabbed onto your hand and began to pull you out of the Great Hall.

“Wait! Where’s Harry?!” you shouted, pushing past the crowds of many students.

“That’s where I’m taking you! We have to find the Horcrux!”

Weaving through the corridors, you held your wand in your fist tightly as the screams surrounding you only get louder and louder. You had an idea as to where you were going but was interupted as you were roughly pushed away from Hermione and hit the wall. You banged your head and groaned in pain, rubbing the sore spot.

“Stupefy!” you yelled, knocking as Death Eater down as you managed to stumble to your feet. Without wasting time, you ran down the flight of stairs, and hid behind a column. You closed your eyes, trying to telepathically communicte with your twin. You guys have managed to do it before, but it leaves you both with a strong headache.

Harry.

Harry, where are you.

No response.

“Diffindo!”

Your eye widened as you gasped and quickly ducked, avoiding the spell. You turned and ran to find any sort of barrier. But to your dismay, you were cornered with no other way left to run.

Harry, please.

“Bombarda Maxima!” Hermione shouted, pointing her wand towards the ceiling above the Death Eater.

The ceiling began to crack and large chunks of it started to come crashing down, even above you. The Death Eaters screamed, attempting to escape but were too slow and got crushed.

“Reducto,” you gasped, covering your head, to break up the big pieces above you into smaller ones. Breathing heavily, the dust from the fall swarmed the air as you lightly coughed fanning it away. Looking the debris settling down, you looked back up at Hermione.

“Thank you,” you breathed.

“No problem,” you said out of breath.

Room of Req...

The message faded out, but it was just enough to know where your brother was. You grabbed onto Hermione and pulled her along with you. Without questioning it, she followed. Throughout the way, you tried your best to avoid any Death Eaters, but they would inevitably pop up. Especially looking for you.

Every now and then you and Hermione would flick your wands over your shoulders, tossing charms and deflecting curses.

Finally, getting to the more empty corridors, you saw that familiar head of brown hair standing.

“Harry!” you shouted as he turned around and immediately hugged you.

“Y/N,” he breathed, relieved that you were safe, and running his hand down your hair lovingly. Ron came running and hugged Hermione after being away from each other too long, before ultimately all four of you joined in one big group hug.

Pulling apart, you took a good look at his face covered in dirt, dried blood, and scratches. You looked just as bad, with some pieces of rubble from the ceiling in your hair and dried blood on the side of your head from your inital fall. Your eyes traveled down to his pockets where you noticed a familiar wand sticking out. Furrowing your eyebrows, you quickly snatched it before he could turn away.

“This is Draco’s,” you said, your heart sinking at the thought of him. You missed him so much, hoping he is okay.

“It’s not anymore,” he said trying to reach forward, but you snapped your arm back, out of his reach.

“Why do you have it,” you questioned, begining to get riled up, “Have you done something to him..”

He rolled his eyes. “No, Y/N. I disarmed him at the Malfoy Manor, remember.” Your arm fell in defeat before stubbornly handing it back over to him. The four of you began to walk.

“Where the hell have you all been?” Harry asked aloud, changing the subject.

“Hermione and I destroyed the cup,” Ron spoke proudly.

“What!? How!” You gasped, gaining a smirk from Ron.

“In the Chamber of Secrets,” he said.

"Chamber- what?" said Harry, coming to an unsteady halt before them. "It was Ron, all Ron's idea!" said Hermione breathlessly. "Wasn't it absolutely brilliant? There we were, after we left, and I said to Ron, even if we find the other one, how are we going to get rid of it? We still hadn't got rid of the cup! And then he thought of it! The basilisk!" "What the?" you laughed. "Something to get rid of Horcruxes," said Ron simply. Your eyes dropped to the objects clutched in Ron arms and Hermione's pocket: great curved fangs; torn, you now realized, from the skull of a dead basilisk. "But how did you get in there?" you asked, staring from the fangs to Ron. "You need to speak Parseltongue!" "He did!" whispered Hermione. "Show him, Ron!" Ron made a horrible strangled hissing noise making both you and Harry raise your eyebrows. "It's what you did to open the locket," he told Harry apologetically. "I had to have a few goes to get it right, but," he shrugged modestly, "we got there in the end." "He was amazing!" said Hermione. "Amazing!" "So..." Harry was struggling to keep up. "So..." "So we're another Horcrux down," said Ron, and from under his jacket he pulled the mangled remains of Hufflepuff's cup. "Hermione stabbed it. Thought she should. She hasn't had the pleasure yet." "Genius!" yelled both you and Harry at the same time. You glanced at each othe and laughed. You hadn’t had a twin moment in a long time. "It was nothing, after we split up to look for the two of you," said Ron, though he looked delighted with himself. "So what's new with you?" As he said it, there was an explosion from overhead, all four of you looked up as dust fell from the ceiling.

“All right, we all know what we’re here for,” Harry spoke, “I know what the diadem looks like, and I know where it is. He hid it exactly where I had my old Potions book, where everyone's been hiding stuff for centuries. He thought he was the only one to find it. Come on."

As the walls trembled again, thet two of you led them back through the concealed entrance and down the staircase into the Room of Requirement. It was empty, with only the four of you.

“We should split up,” you said.

“No!” Harry said.

“Wait, actually that’s a good idea, think about it Harry. More terrain to cover. We’re all in the same room, we can still be at each others sides in any given moment,” Hermione said. You smiled thanking her quietly. She returned the gesture with a smile and looked at Harry.

"Alright,” he grumbled as you went your seperate ways. "And he never realized anyone could get in?" said Ron, his voice echoing in the silence, tauntingly. "He thought he was the only one," said Harry. "Too bad for him I've had to hide stuff in my time... this way," he added. "I think it's down here..." You all sped off up adjacent aisles. Harry could hear the others' footsteps echoing through the towering piles of junk, of bottles, hats, crates, chairs, books, weapons, broomsticks, bats...

Harry’s 3rd Omniscent P.O.V

“Somewhere near here," Harry muttered to himself. “Somewhere... somewhere...”

Deeper and deeper into the labyrinth he went, looking for objects he recognized from his one previous trip into the room. His breath was loud in his ears, and then his very soul seemed to shiver. There it was, right ahead, the blistered old cupboard in which he had hidden his old Potions book, and on top of it, the pockmarked stone warlock wearing a dusty old wig and what looked like an ancient discolored tiara. He had already stretched out his hand, though he remained few feet away, when a voice behind him spoke.

"Hold it, Potter." Harry skidded to a halt and turned around. Crabbe and Goyle were standing behind him, shoulder to shoulder, wands pointing right at Harry. Through the small space between their jeering faces he saw Draco Malfoy.

“Great, exactly who I was looking for,” Harry muttered under his breath, irritated. He hated him, but only tolerated him for you. He still never understood why out of all of the men you could choose from, it had to be Malfoy. "That's my wand you're holding, Potter," Draco spat, pointing through the gap between Crabbe and Goyle. "Not anymore," panted Harry, tightening his grip on the hawthorn wand. "Winners, keepers, Malfoy. Watch how you say my name, it’s the same as your beloved girlfriend.”

His jaw clenched at the mention of your name. “Don’t bring her into this.”

“Who's lent you theirs?" Harry spoke. "My mother," said Draco. Harry laughed, though there was nothing very humorous about the situation. He could not hear you, Ron, or Hermione anymore. You guys seemed to have run out of earshot, searching for the diadem. "So how come you three aren't with Voldemort?" Harry asked. "We're gonna be rewarded," said Crabbe. His voice was surprisingly soft for such an enormous person: Harry had hardly ever heard him speak before. Crabbe was speaking like a small child promised a large bag of sweets. "We 'ung back, Potter. We decided not to go. Decided to bring you to 'im." "Such a good plan," Harry mocked in admiration. He could not believe that he was this close to getting the diadem, and was going to be blocked by Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle.

He began edging slowly backward toward the place where the Horcrux sat lopsided upon the bust. If he could just get his hands on it before the fight broke out. "So how did you get in here?" Harry asked, trying to distract them. "I virtually lived in the Room of Hidden Things all last year," Draco spoke, his voice brittle. "I know how to get in." "We was hiding in the corridor outside," grunted Goyle. "We can do Disslusion Charms now! And then," his face split into a gormless grin, "you turned up right in front of us and said you was looking for a die-dum! What's a die-dum?"

"Harry?" your voice echoed suddenly from the other side of the wall to Harry's right. "Are you talking to someone?"

With a whiplike movement, Crabbe pointed his wand at the fifty foot mountain of old furniture, of broken trunks, of old books and robes and unidentifiable junk, and shouted, "Descendo!" The wall began to totter, then the top third crumbled into the aisle next door where Ron stood. "Ron!" Harry bellowed, as somewhere out of sight you screamed, and Harry heard innumerable objects crashing to the floor on the other side of the destabilized wall.

He pointed his wand at the rampart, cried, "Finite!" and it steadied. "No!" shouted Draco, staying Crabbe's arm as the latter made to repeat his spell. He didn’t know you were here in the same room as him. "If you hurt Y/N or wreck the room, we will never find the damn diadem!"

Harry, what’s happening?!

Harry ignored your telepathic calls and carried on. "What's that matter?" said Crabbe, tugging himself free. "It's both Harry and Y/N Potter the Dark Lord wants, who cares about a die-dum?" "Potter came in here to get it," said Draco with ill-disguised impatience at the slow-wittedness of his colleagues. "so that must mean-"

“-Must mean?” Crabbe turned on Draco with undisguised ferocity. "Who cares what you think? I don't take your orders no more, Draco. You an' your dad are finished." "Harry?" you shouted aloud this time, from the other side of the junk wad. "What's going on?" "Harry?" mimicked Crabbe. "What's going on, Potter! Crucio!" Harry had lunged for the tiara; Crabbe's curse missed him but hit the stone bust, which flew into the air; the diadem soared upward and then dropped out of sight in the mass of objects on which the bust had rested. "STOP!" Draco shouted at Crabbe, his voice echoing through the enormous room. "The Dark Lord wants him alive."

That’s the excuse Draco wants to use, but deep down he knew that if anything happened to Harry under his arms, that you would never forgive him. While Voldemort was bad, you never speaking to him again was worse.

"So? I'm not killing him, am I?" yelled Crabbe, throwing off Draco’s restraining arm. "But if I can, I will, the Dark Lord wants him dead anyway, what's the diff?" A jet of scarlet light shot past Harry by inches: Hermione had run around the corner behind him and sent a Stunning Spell straight at Crabbe's head. It only missed because Draco pulled him out of the way. "It's that Mudblood! Avada Kedavra!" Harry saw Hermione dive aside, and his fury that Crabbe had aimed to kill wiped all else from his mind. He shot a Stunning Spell at Crabbe, who lurched out of the way, knocking Draco’s wand out of his hand; it rolled out of sight beneath a mountain of broken furniture and bones. “Don't kill him! DON'T KILL HIM!" Malfoy yelled at Crabbe and Goyle, who were both aiming at Harry. Their split second's hesitation was all Harry needed. "Expelliarmus!" Goyle's wand flew out of his hand and disappeared into the bulwark of objects beside him while Goyle leapt foolishly on the spot, trying to retrieve it. Draco jumped out of range of Hermione's second Stunning Spell, and Ron, appearing suddenly at the end of the aisle, shot a full Body-Bind Curse at Crabbe, which narrowly missed.

Original 3rd P.O.V

You ran past through the ailes where all the commotion was comming from. Harry wasn’t answering any of your calls and you swore you heard that familiar voice.

“Harry James Potter!” you shouted angrily, while he turned to look at you wide-eyed. Why wasn’t he answering you. “What’s the matter with you!?”

“Why don’t you ask your pitiful boyfriend!” he spat back.

“Excuse you,” you glared, taken back and looked at the scene unwraveling before your eyes.

Crabbe wheeled around and screamed, "Avada Kedavra!" again.

Ron leapt out of sight to avoid the jet of green light. You reached for your wand but before you could cast a spell, Crabbe yelled.

“Expelliarmus!” Your wand shot out of your hand.

“Flipendo!” The second jinx Crabbe yelled hit you straight in your chest, painfully sending you flying backwards, as if punched, and slammed into the destabilized wall. Wandless Draco stormed up to Crabbe fuming and punched him square in the jaw repeatedly before pushing him out of the way.

“If you hurt Y/N one more time, so help me I will kill you with my bare hands!” he shouted, disappearing out of your sight.

You groaned before weakly, standing up. hid behind a three-legged wardrobe as Hermione charged toward them, hitting Goyle with a Stunning Spell as she came.

"It's somewhere here!" Harry yelled at you, pointing at the pile of junk into which the old tiara had fallen. "Look for it while I go and help Ron-” "HARRY!" Hermione screamed. A roaring, billowing noise behind him gave him a moment's warning. He turned and saw both Ron and Crabbe running as hard as they could up the aisle toward them. Your eyes widened as flames started to slither around the room. "Like it hot, scum?" roared Crabbe as he ran. He had no control over what he had done. Flames of abnormal size were pursuing you all, licking up the sides of the junk bulwarks, which were crumbling to soot at their touch.

"Aguamenti!" you and Harry bawled, but the jet of water that soared from the tip of his wand evaporated in the air. It was not a normal fire. Crabbe had used a curse that neither you or Harry had heard of and could not contain them. "RUN!" You stopped for Draco as he grabbed the Stunned Goyle and dragged him along.

“Draco-”

“GO!” he shouted at you not out of anger, but out of worry.

You bit your lip as you turned a corner, catching up with Harry, Ron, and Hermione. The flames chased you as though they were alive, trying to kill you all. The flames mutated forming a gigantic pack of fiery beasts: Flaming serpents, chimaeras, and dragons rose and fell and rose again.

Draco, Crabbe, and Goyle had vanished from view. The four of you stopped running as the fiery monsters were circled you getting closer and closer forming a wall.

“What do we do?!” Ron shouted. Thinking quickly on your feet you looked around and noticed three broomsticks. You dove for them and threw one at Ron, Harry and kept the last one for yourself. Ron pulled Hermione behind him as she latched up onto his torso and soared up into the air. You and Harry did the same thing flying up. You began to cough, looking around. The smoke and heat were becoming overwhelming. You could not see a trace of Malfoy, Crabbe, or Goyle anywhere. You swooped as low as you dare over the marauding monsters of flame to try to find them, but there was nothing but fire.

Tear were welling up in your eyes.

“DRACO!” You screamed, “DRACO!”

“Y/N, Let’s go!” Harry stated, flying next to you in attempt to hurry up and get you out of the room.

“No! I’m not leaving without Draco!” you cried, “Dead or alive!” "Harry, let's get out, let's get out!" bellowed Ron, though it was impossible to see where the door was through the black smoke. And then Harry turned his head, hearing a thin, piteous human scream from amidst the terrible commotion, the thunder of devouring flame. "No. No way, It's too dangerous!" Ron yelled, but you ignored his plees and wheeled in the air, looking for any sign of life. Harry followed shortly behind, he was not going to let you be by yourself in this dangerous of a situation. Draco with his arms around unconscious, was perched on a fragile tower of charred desks, and you dived.

“Y/N! Are you mad!?”

Draco saw you coming and raised one arm, but even as you grasped it, you knew at once that it was no good. Goyle was too heavy and Draco’s hand, covered in sweat, slid instantly out of yours. "IF WE DIE FOR THEM, I'LL KILL YOU, HARRY!" roared Ron's voice, eager to leave.

You turned towards Harry.

“Please, get Goyle!”

“Ron!” Harry yelled.

He groaned and dove for him. With one arm, he held Goyle’s leg and Hermione, from behind Ron, held onto Goyle’s arm. With one last dive, you successfully grabbed onto Draco as he hopped onto the broom behind you.

“LET’S GO NOW!” Hermione yelled and all of you flew through the billowing black smoke, hardly able to breathe. All around you, the last few objects unburned by the devouring flames were flung into the air, as the creatures of the cursed fire cast them high in celebration.

Harry went the opposite direction of the rest of you.

You turned your head. “Harry!-”

“Keep going, I’m getting the diadem!” Through the smoke, you steered the broom through an opening and moments later clean air filled your lungs as you collided with the wall in the corridor beyond. All of you fell off your booms, facedown, gasping, coughing, and retching. Harry made it out, rolling over and sat up. The door to the Room of Requirement had vanished. Ron and Hermione sat panting on the floor beside Goyle, who was still unconscious.

Next to you was Draco. You let out a sob of relief and threw yourself into his arms, nearly knocking the air out of him. You brushed the char and stone out of Draco’s now disheveled platinum hair.

“Are you alright, Lovely?” Draco immediately asked, inspecting you for signs you were hurt. The tight grip of his arms around you, make you feel safe. He pressed a kiss on the side of your head.

“I’m fine, oh my Merlin. I can’t believe I almost lost you,” you sobbed.

Harry and Ron rolled their eyes.

“Bloody git almost killed us,” Harry spat, staggering to his feet.

“Time and place, Harry,” Hermione warned.

“No, I wish he would’ve drowned in those fires. You should see how lucky you are to be alive right now,” he sneered. Draco’s jaw clenched while you were whipping the tears out of your eyes in his arms.

“Watch your tone, Potter. If it wasn’t for me, Crabbe would’ve killed you.”

“Crabbe? He's dead,” Ron said harshly.

“I’m aware, better think twice next time before -”

You shoved Draco off of you and stood up. You couldn’t take it anymore. After everything you all just went through, they’re still looking for something to meaninglessly fight over.

“Would the two of you just stop it!” you glared, frustrated tears still threatening to spill out of your eyes. “We ALL almost just died for fucksake! Can you two just let this go and move on! I love you Harry but just shut the fuck up. And I love you so much Draco, but you also need to shut up-”

“Bloody hell..,” muttered Ron. Hermione slapped the back of his head, earning a groan in return.

You continued.

“I get that the two of you are never going to be friends right now, I get that. But for me, as your sister,” you said looking at Harry and then turning to look at Draco, “as your girlfriend, please just get along in the presence of me. Please, otherwise I’m never going to speak to the two of you ever again. I mean it this time. I can’t take the constant arguing between the two of you, we almost just died!”

Harry glared as Draco as he stood up. Deep down they both felt guilty for making you feel this way. This is the last thing either of them would have wanted to add to the weight of your shoulders.

“I’m not saying you guys can’t ever argue again, believe me, I know that’s inevitable. I’m just saying to try and control yourselves because I can’t stand to see the two people who I love the most in the whole world attack each other!”

Draco, wanting to be the bigger person, walked up to Harry and held out his hand. You, Ron, and Hermione watched attentively. Harry stared at it and roughly grabbed it, the both of them trying to assert their dominance over the other.

“Truce, for the sake of Y/N?” Draco, glared. He didn’t want to, but for you he would do anything.

“Truce.” Harry glared right back at him.

The two of them aggressively let go of one another and turned. Draco walked back to you, embracing you in his arms, pulling you closer to him and Harry walked closer towards Ron and Hermione.

“Now that that’s all settled, we’re going to go and try to destroy the Horcruxes,” Hermione began, “Why don’t the two of you go on off on your own and when it’s time you’ll know where to meet us?”

You nodded but before parting ways, you jogged up to Harry. He stood over you, silent. You both eagerly pulled each other in for a tight hug.

“I love you, Harry. I know where to meet you guys, and answer my calls will you,” you mumbled.

“I love you too, Y/N,” he chuckled, “Please be safe. I’ll see you soon.”

Pulling apart, the two of you went your separate ways. Draco let you through many empty corridors before you ultimately ended up walking into an abandoned room where the two of you could finally be alone.

Running into his arms again, he wrapped one arm around your waist, pulling you closer, and another around your head cradling it.

“Never do that again,” you frowned, before looking up at him.

“I’m sorry baby.” He cupped your cheeks and pressed his cold lips to yours. He had a cut on his lip where you could taste his dried blood. Your heart ached.

“Sorry isn’t gonna cut it this time, Draco,” you said.

“When this is all over, I’ll make it up to you. I promise, but until then stay by my side,” he weakly smiled.

“Always and forever,” you grinned, kissing him again like it’s the last time you’re ever going to see him.

The two of you don’t know how it’s going to end, but you do know that you’ll always have each other.

And about Goyle, well.

Flexibility: 3 March - Santa Maria, Catamarca, Argentina. 750km to Bolivia

Two regions left and then it’s Bolivia!

Although it’s unplanned, I’ve taken a rest day and am currently sat in a rather lovely family run hotel in Santa Maria, Catamarca (Huaico Init) and am listening to the regular chimes of the town’s bells. I arrived here early evening yesterday and my smile had disappeared as my headache grew in prominence. With each kilometre as I approached the little mountain town, at just under 2000m above sea level, the roads gradually disintegrated. The countless fords that crossed Ruta 40 were a combination of dry, stony and sandy, or muddy, wet and active, leaving me to guess what approach I should take to crossing each one. The majority of crossings involved getting off my bike and tentatively choosing the driest path to the other side, where some I chose to ride, with unpredictable sandpits ready to take out my front wheel. It was hot, 32 degrees, and I’d taken refuge for an hour having descended from around 2200m, on my last two mouthfuls of fluid, in a beautiful little cafe. Not only did I replenish my fluids, I ate a pizza that could happily feed two with no room to spare, making up for the deficit of meals I’d missed in the previous 6 days. I had just one puncture to go before I reached Santa Maria.

I got another puncture at the top of the 60 mile climb out of Belen, and I’m not sure how long it had been going down. Given until later in the ride, it was surprising that on this near immaculate stretch of tarmac, the puncture happened here. Although overall the gradient wasn’t bad, it was rolling, carrying gear made it laborious, and whatever Strava and Hammerhead state as the elevation gain,it’s mostly 10-15% under the actual elevation according to Ride with GPS (which uses Google as base map), which is irritating! Couple that with a grumpy girl in need of a rest day, and you get the picture. One hard slog of a day.

Although there are days like these, it is incredible how mountains motivate me. On Tuesday, also feeling fatigued, I left my little Airbnb, not feeling it, and on joining the road, my eyes were immediately drawn towards the sun rising on the backdrop of mountains facing East. The array of colours seemed amplified, as if knowing it was the impetus I needed to smile and get going, burying my fatigue in some corner of my backpack. On that day, a big one of 217km, I crossed 4000km on Ruta 40, meaning that by the end of the day, there’d be less than 1000km to Bolivia. Since Friday, every day’s experience for cycling had just got better and better. Traffic has all but disappeared, and whilst Juan province was a better experience than Mendoza province, Catamarca province seemed to raise the bar again. I felt I was the only person remaining in the country, other than the odd motorcyclist or road worker who would cheerfully toot or wave me on my way. I stumbled upon wild roaming herds of cows and horses, and was serenaded by desert birds and creatures that I haven’t yet identified. Although the heat is exhausting even with a 7am start, most of the time, there’s been enough beauty surrounding me to help me push on.

The biggest spanner in the works other than punctures has been the impact of Carnival week on the access to good food. For around 4 of these days, eateries and supermarkets seem to have been closed, with the only options being kioskos and service stations. It’s meant my diet has been woefully inadequate. I’ve survived largely on sandwiches, packets of cereal eaten with UHT milk from the packet, nuts and raisins and that’s about it. It is likely to explain and have contributed to my fatigue today. But having found a restaurant here last night which served chicken, potato and salad, served at a respectable time of 1900 hours, it meant staying an extra night was the easy choice, despite it using up one of four of my contingency days before reaching Peru.

When I reflect on the last 6 days, there is no doubt that this area of Argentina for me has been the most beautiful and greatest pleasure. In sharing my progress and photos with acquaintances, they’ve commented that it seems far more interesting in this region. I think that’s right, but I still think that Patagonia, although extremely testing, wild, unpredictable and remote, has a beauty too. I saw more wildlife oddly and creatures I’d never even heard of. I experienced head winds I’d never dreamed I’d ever ride in. I also received such kindness which has been less obvious the further north I’ve ridden, weirdly I believe as it’s been less busy!

There was definitely a moment on Tuesday when I looked at the road that seemed to dissolve in the distance, and was confronted with a mass that seemed bigger than any mountain I’d seen so far. I can’t find the name but it was sometime after leaving Chilecito. The vista created an optical illusion: you looked like you were riding downhill due to the strata of the rock, but you were riding uphill - until the road eventually dropped down into a valley. The moment made me feel exposed, like a tiny dot in a huge world, again a moment of diving off top board into icy cold water 30 metres below. With all the distance I’d ridden, these moment of realisation were few and far between, but memorable and like on this occasion, made the hairs on my arms and back of my neck stand on end!

There has also been the “raised eyebrow” of “why do it this way round - everyone rides north to south!”. This may be true. I’ve only passed one cyclist heading north, a French guy in Patagonia. But really, why? Why is it so hard to understand that riding north might be a good idea? Now I’m nearly in Bolivia, I can talk about my experience. Like reading a book, it seems most people would see a journey like this: you start at the top of the page and read down. Depending on where you live, you will read either left to right or right to left but always start at the top. For cyclists, they may look at the prevailing headwind. In South America, it’s from the North. Riding south, you’re more likely to have a tailwind (wind on your back pushing you south) than a headwind. In the UK, there’s a challenge where cyclists will ride from one end of the UK to the other, typically starting at Land’s End in Cornwall and finishing in John O Groats in Scotland (LEJOG). If you weren’t a cyclist, it’s pretty likely you wouldn’t think about the prevailing wind from the South West and ride south, and ride the other way round (JOGLE). With no knowledge, I’d always ride towards the sun! So in the UK, north to south! Except I’m a cyclist so I know the “rules”, and have even considered going for the world record (taken last year by Christina MacKenzie). The thing is, even when you know the “rules”, when I’ve tried to apply them, they’ve only applied about 50% of the time. For example, in 2016, I rode fromVancouver to Calgary. Should have been a tailwind but a weather front was bringing bad weather and the wind switched to the east and a juicy headwind most of the time. Again, in 2019, I rode from my home in Clearwell to Athens in Greece via the Dalmatian coastline. In 23 days, I had a tailwind on two days, when the “prevailing wind” should have been pushing me towards the South East of the continent of Europe. So forget logic!

Because I did it this way round, I’ve had a fair chance to acclimatise, I will have had around 7 days at altitude (above 1500m) before I climb to Bolivia at a starting altitude of 3447m, the highest elevation I will have been on land. I’ve travelled from harsh and unforgiving desert to tropical and magnificent mountains. And now what seems most exciting of all, as I wrote early on, travelling towards people I love and not away from them.

On this last point, because the route has taken me north and not south, in the time I’ve been riding, Peru opened its border with Bolivia. In a previous update, I’d explored whether I could arrange an escort to take me through the relatively dangerous country, 13th on the world Crime Index. Greg at Global Guardians was true to his word and came back with a price, which whilst would have been acceptable to a working top executive, to a humble now unemployed lady of 49, still had the effect of making my eyes water, if not pop out of my head.

Unbeknown to me, in the background, Operation HQ (Mark) had been scheming. With two young girls, a big hairy dog and limited annual leave, initially, we hadn’t considered him to be able to join me other than for a few days of respite in California. Then everything changed very rapidly.

On Monday night, we had a call, and talked through the options, schedule, COVID restrictions and risks. By Tuesday night, Mark had booked two return flights (London to Miami, Fort Lauderdale to Lima), booked car hire in Lima, had given himself 4 days to get from home to the Bolivian Border and Peru was on! Trust me when I tried to persuade him that this was too much, he’d be too tired, I was worried that it would be risky for him and that I’d simply fly from La Paz and meet him in Los Angeles as planned. But his mind had been made up. At the time of writing, we still need to arrange care for Nyla, as a 55kg dog might be a step to far in bringing her to and from Peru.

Within 30 minutes of hearing Mark’s update, I shared I’d fly back from Lima to Fort Lauderdale with him and worry about how I’d ride to Canada from there, after a few days recovery. My flight was booked and the first fixed date of this adventure was set.

I haven’t talked too much about Mark in my blog, or anyone else that I’d really like to, and won’t do without their permission. But I checked with Mark and he’s ok for me to share a few things about him.

Anyone who knows me will know there’s been a few rocky years in my past 31 years as a “grown up”! The older we are, the more likely we will have baggage and for some, it will be a carry on suitcase and others, a container load. I fall closer to the latter.

But along came Mark in 2018. We met through cycling not long after I moved from South East England to The Royal Forest of Dean, a complete leap of faith in the move, for which I’ve not yet had any regrets.

For two years, we were distant friends, in a similar sphere of friends through cycling, but rarely bumped into each other. Then, following an extended visit to see my daughter in Australia over Christmas 2019, I returned, and we started seeing each other, to the rumbling and beginnings of COVID.

In March 2020, although they weren’t mass testing, I came down with what I believe to have been COVID. The UK weren’t yet locked down, but self-isolation was needed if you were symptomatic. A week into my malaise, Mark wanted to see me, and was aware he’d need to isolate with me for 14 days should he come over. Seven days after arriving, the UK was locked down. Travel was banned, and this remained in place for 3 months. After living on my own for a number of years, suddenly being thrust into a 24/7, 365 relationship where nobody leaves the house can’t be described as the ideal start to any romance. But here we are, two years later, almost to the day, and going strong. There is no one I have ever had such trust in to be there for me, and to know me better than anyone. Sickly as it sounds, we seem to have the ability to smash curve balls away into the ether. I’m sure we are going to hit our bumps in the road, but hopefully, we’ve both got it right this time…time will tell. But with all the bad that COVID has wreaked on the world, this unprecedented act of fate has at least provided one happy story, which otherwise may not have happened. I hope he keeps me a little longer! He comes with an amazing family, two daughters, Honor (10) and Eliana (8 going on 20!), Gail and Mike (his sister and partner, dog-loving, hiking crazy crimes against humanity card game players) and Sue, who in my mind can be described as the children’s story book grandmother, the perfect mother and giver to society, best cake maker (used to teach cookery so I don’t compete on that front) and surprisingly, the winner of Cards against Humanity on Christmas Eve 2021. I have very few direct family members in the UK, but I’m happy of this extension by association, even if they’re a little bit shocked at what they’ve got with me 😆. A wise old Cypriot lady, Mrs Alexanian, said to me one time, “When we are young, two people are like mouldable rubber. We can bend and shape together and adapt to each other’s ways. As we get older, this rubber becomes more brittle and hard, and we can’t bend and flex so much. But with this in mind, we must try”.

Ok. Back to the adventure.

MvA Ocs

I shall share my Monsters vs Aliens ocs. One or two are older general ocs that I’ve reworked for this universe.

Mercy Vivas/”La Bruja” - A nervous wedding dress seamstress who accidentally tapped into her family’s dark magic past. Has phenomenal magical powers but no knowledge to how to use it. Her cell is lined with sticky notes of what she’s learned through trial-and-error. Mexican hispanic, with dark skin and brown eyes, dyed green hair (bob-cut, in bun when working), and is fairly short at 5ft. Wears overalls and tailors smocks normally, but has purple “witchy” clothing for missions or experimenting. Conflicts a bit with Dr Cockroach due to their views on science vs magic. Has big stupid crush on a certain giant lady.

Radu/”Bat Vampire” - The unfortunate result of a vampire getting desperate enough to try eating local bats. Radu was a juvenile microbat who bit his attacker back after it had drained his mother, and gained vampirism in turn. Instead of turning into a human-like vampire however, Radu is transformed into... a weird looking bat child. Looks like a humanoid bat about the size of a small dog and has *Very* fluffy black fur that conceals his eyes. Uses feet like hands as he lacks traditional arms. Radu was discovered in Hungary after he was caught eating out of trash bins. Requires a iron-rich diet to stay healthy, and terrifies Dr Cockroach when he initally tried eating him. Capable of flight and echolocation. Is pretty much a toddler in age, and doesn’t understand what happened to him. Imprints on Link as his caretaker.

Dara O’Ryan/”Scarecreep” - A lesson in why you should never leave family behind when emigrating. “Dara” was one of the sole possessions of the O’Ryan family during the Great Hunger of Ireland. Dara was created to terrfiy both birds and other starving people from the family’s meagre crops. By placing their hopes and dreams into the sack of straw, they breathed life into it. Unfortunately once the rent got too high; the O’Ryan’s skipped town, moved to Australia, and dropped the “O” in Ryan into the ocean. Dara waited for centuries for their family to return, forever standing watch over the rotting field and crumbling hut. Was detected sometime after when developers in the area starting reporting about a “mad farmer” chasing them off the property with a pitchfork and destroying machinery. Area 5X had a difficult time capturing Dara, as they feel no pain and filled their body with stinging nettles. Was eventually detained after Susan sat him down for a peaceful talk. Is roughly the height of a person, made from scrap cloth, with eyes painted on. Mouth has been cut open across the face and is full of stuck needles. Wears clothes typical of a farmhand, and has a number of twine wigs they use to accessorise. Eats pests like rats and birds like a snake, although no one is sure how they digest. Unironically terrifying.

Hazuki Minamoto/”Blond Widow” - A Jorōgumo that let himself be caught by Area 5X. Has a long list of crimes under his belt and was wanted for a number of high-profile murders/eatings of japanese public officials. By letting himself be caught by American forces, he essentially claims sanctuary in the states. Top half is a beautiful androgynous young man with blond hair and purple eyes, bottom half is a giant Trichonephila clavata abdomen. About seven feet tall counting the spider half. Has the abilities of a spider (web-spinning, climbing walls, venom etc), with the wit and scheming of someone who’s been alive since the Heian period. Very vain and particular. No one is truly sure what his angle is, as he doesn’t seem to be targetting anyone for a meal. Best that Monger keep an eye on him...

Demons of Fire and Ice

(A starter for @theebabomination)

How long had he been here? Weeks, months... years? The only measure of time Saburo really had was the passing of the seasons, spring had already turned into bitter autumn, so 6-8 months he guessed. Days of being poked with needles and having blood drawn, reinjected back into him and waiting for him to develop powers. Consent was irrelevant, he was the doctor’s plaything and there was nothing he could do about it. They starved him and beat him if he disobeyed, better to take the bruised rest than be altered again. He remembered when one injection made him go blind for 2 hours, Saburo feared he’d never see again. “They’re ready for you, get going.” The guard stated, pointing his gun at the bony teenager. “Does bullying children make you feel good inside, John? Or do you get off on it, you sick fuck.” The black-haired boy spat, earning a rifle butt to the back of the head. “OW!” He shouted, collapsing. “Considering I could blow your stupid brains out, I’d keep your mouth shut.” John replied, tired and annoyed as he dragged their impetuous prisoner to the table despite the screaming. Strapping him down seemed unnecessary. What was he going to do, run 20 feet before being anesthetized? Perhaps it was a demonstration of power as he stared up impassively at the large, ray-gun machine hovering overhead. “What does that do?” Saburo asked nervously. “That is not your concern.” The man in the surgical mask stated. “Considering you’re going to fire that at me...” He fell silent, not wanting another beating. “Start at 20 units, increase the power.” The man ordered, the technician nodded and pulled a lever, the machine crackled with energy before a beam zapped through Saburo, making him convulse. It was pain beyond anything he experienced, it felt as if he was sweating molten lava and his body was being cooked in an oven, his attempts at cursing the man fell short between pained gasps and screams. There it was again, in his head. The firebird, it sung to him in his dreams. What the hell did it mean, was it freedom? A subconscious manifestation of something? Theorizing about the phoenix he saw somewhat distracted from the building agony racking his frail body. This was the “treatment” that would kill him. Gasping as something inside Saburo broke like a dam, he felt a rush of energy from his head as the leather restraints holding him down snapped like a twig. An alarm blared overhead, the frail youth didn’t care about that. He heard a noise in his head, the cry of a bird of prey... Warmth was inside him, visions of the firebird consuming entire worlds flashed through his mind. There was someone in his head, but it wasn’t him. Acting almost on instinict, he threw a few fingers out and picked up a scalpel with his... mind? It was as if his mind was doing the grabbing. He threw it into the surgeon’s heart, killing him instantly as the guards were thrown back by a wave of telekinetic power into some now badly malfunctioning equipment, the inital surge of psionic energy as the Phoenix entered it’s new host had blown out all the electrical equipment in the facility. Saburo didn’t know how he had the strength to run, perhaps it was adrenaline but good god he was quick on his feet. Seeing the guards ahead, he focused his mind on their hearts and used that power he had with the scalpel to crush them to a pulp, killing them instantly. The telepath soon found the kitchen and began devouring a chicken carcass when someone entered.

SPECIAL ABILITIES

Branding (Su) Each time a lilitu damages a living creature with her tail slap, the wound leaves an angry and permanent red brand. The creature struck becomes staggered for 1 round from the pain. A successful DC 26 Will save negates the staggered condition and reduces the duration of the brand from permanent to 1 hour. The save DC is Charisma-based.

Removing brands is difficult—each casting of restoration, dispel chaos, or dispel evil removes one brand. Heal removes 1d4+4 brands. Greater restoration removes a number of brands equal to the spell’s caster level. Miracle and wish can each remove all brands at once. The number of brands a creature gains in this manner has a cumulative series of effects, as listed below.

1–3 Brands: The lilitu can affect the branded creature with its create husk, husk link, and profane pact abilities.

4–6 Brands: The branded creature takes a –2 penalty on all Will saves made against a lilitu’s spells, spell-like abilities, and supernatural abilities. The branded creature’s aura now radiates chaos and evil.

7–9 Brands: The branded creature’s Wisdom score is reduced by 4. A chaotic evil creature is immune to this effect.

10 or More Brands: The penalties to the creature’s Will saves and Wisdom score that are listed above double. In addition, the branded creature automatically fails all Will saves made against a lilitu’s spells, spell-like abilities, and supernatural abilities. A chaotic evil creature is immune to this effect.

Create Husk (Su) Once per day as a swift action, when a lilitu deals enough damage with a weapon, spell, or spell-like ability to kill a branded Small or Medium humanoid within 30 feet, she can instead opt to transform that slain humanoid into a husk. The targeted creature can attempt a DC 26 Fortitude save to negate this effect, allowing it to die normally. A humanoid transformed into a husk withers away into an immobile and desiccated corpse, but does not actually die—in this state, the creature remains aware of its surroundings but can take no actions at all. A husk is essentially treated as an object with hardness 15 and 60 hit points; it weighs 10% of the original creature’s weight. If a husk is destroyed, the effect ends and the body dies. This is a curse effect—removing this curse restores the victim to life at a number of negative hit points equal to the creature’s Constitution – 1; a husk restored to life in this way has 1 round to stabilize or be healed before it dies. A lilitu can maintain a number of husks simultaneously equal to her Charisma bonus (8 husks for the typical lilitu); if she creates more husks than she can maintain, a previously created husk (chosen by the lilitu) is released and immediately dies. Lilitus hide their husk collections in very safe places. The save DC is Charisma-based.

Husk Link (Su) By spending a minute in blasphemous contact with a husk she created, a lilitu can establish a supernatural link to that husk. As long as she and that husk remain on the same plane, divination spells reveal the linked husk’s alignment to be the same as the lilitu’s alignment (chaotic evil). The link allows a lilitu to use her change shape ability to assume a husk’s original form, gaining a +20 bonus on Disguise checks to impersonate that person. If a lilitu with an active husk link takes enough damage to be slain, the husk takes the killing blow’s damage instead and is destroyed, instantly severing the active husk link; if the lilitu is disguised in the husk’s original form, she instantly reverts to her true form.

Profane Grace (Su) A lilitu gains a +4 profane bonus to AC and on Initiative checks and Reflex saves.

Profane Pact (Su) Once per day as a full-round action, a lilitu can forge a profane pact with a willing humanoid creature bearing at least one lilitu brand by touching the creature for 1 full round. A single creature can have no more than one profane pact with a lilitu at any time. This functions identically to a succubus’s profane gift ability, save that it grants a +4 profane bonus to an ability score of the humanoid’s choice and it does not grant a telepathic link to the target.

Profane Wishcraft (Su) A creature that accepts a wish from a lilitu immediately becomes chaotic evil unless it succeeds at a DC 26 Will save. A creature that becomes chaotic evil in this way gains the benefits of a good hope spell for 24 hours, followed by the effects of crushing despair for 1d6 days (these spell effects function at CL 17th). The save DC is Charisma-based.

Swift Claws (Ex) When a lilitu makes a full attack, she can attack twice with each of her claws, for a total of four attacks in that round.

ECOLOGY

Lilitus are subversive and hidden horrors, demons who work subtly in their constant quest to destroy and devastate. Whereas most demons prefer to rend and destroy, the lilitu is more akin to the succubus—she prefers to do her work in humanoid form to infect society with sin from within. Lilitus enjoy few things more than leading mortals into all manner of sinful acts, in the hope that when the mortal perishes, its soul will fuel the Abyss. Despite some superficial similarities to succubi, lilitus are not solely concerned with the sin of lust.

The exact nature of sin that a lilitu tempts a mortal into committing varies, for these demons are adept at reading mortal desires and secrets, quickly discerning which sins a specific target can be convinced to perform.

Lilitus have numerous tools at their disposal for the encouragement of sin, but they much prefer their humanoid victims to commit sins of their own free will.

As such, lilitus generally use their abilities to deceive and beguile mortals rather than forcing them to execute heinous acts. A son convinced to kill for his mother (the disguised lilitu) to rectify a grave injustice elicits far more delight than compelling a mind-controlled humanoid to do such a deed.

In her true form, a lilitu appears as an eyeless, horned, snake-tailed—but otherwise beautiful—human woman.

Despite her lack of eyes, a lilitu can see with ease. A lilitu forms from the soul of a mortal who lured others of its kind to commit sins.

Lilitus are more likely than other demons to devote their work to a specific demon lord, yet they do not generally view such devotion as true servitude. It’s simply convenient to have a specific demigod in mind when seeking to corrupt a mortal’s faith and to convince such fallen souls to shift their own allegiance from a prior deity to the lilitu’s chosen demon lord. When a lilitu chooses to ally herself with a demon lord, she takes on certain physical characteristics that reflect that demon lord’s personality or appearance. For example, a lilitu that serves Dagon, the demon lord of deformity, sea monsters, and the sea might bear scaly skin like that of a fish, webbed fingers and toes, and finlike ridges on her head instead of the more typical goat’s horns.

A lilitu that serves Pazuzu, on the other hand, might have vestigial feathery wings on her back and bird’s talons instead of hooves for feet. These appearance changes are cosmetic only and never impact the lilitu’s options for natural attacks. of course, the demon’s ability to change shape or assume the form of a captured husk allows the demon to disguise her true form at will. Lilitus who serve specific demon lords in this manner often have class levels. A lilitu typically focuses on class roles such as bards, rogues, swashbucklers, or any other agility- and deception-based classes.

Lilitus typically stand 6 to 6-1/2 feet tall and weigh 130 to 150 pounds.

NORTH WHITEHALL TWP., Pennsylvania (WPVI) — A popular Lehigh Valley turkey farm had to destroy thousands of turkeys after the bird flu disease was detected in a flock.

State officials did not name the farm, but David Jaindl says 14,000 turkeys at Jaindl Farms were affected.

Authorities are setting up a control area and surveillance zone around the farm to hopefully prevent the flu from spreading.

Many of the Jaindl turkeys intended for Thanksgiving were processed before the outbreak, Jaindl said.

Jaindl has supplied turkeys to the White House in the past.

“We are confident that we will have an adequate supply of turkeys for the Thanksgiving holiday,” he said.

Jaindl says bird flu issues have reached 46 states and have affected 50 million birds across the country since February.

The bird flu and inflation are hiking the costs of turkeys across the country.

Data from the USDA shows a dramatic increase in the cost of fresh turkey after the 2015 bird flu outbreak — and an even higher jump after this year’s outbreaks.

Pennsylvania poultry operations continue to experience threats from highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). The disease is highly contagious to birds and almost always fatal, according to the state Department of Agriculture.

According to the CDC, there are no reports of any human cases of the avian flu in the United States.

With a mix of different cultures, incredible monuments, and exotic food joints – the city is full of so many places to visit that it might seem overwhelming. While the famous tourist attractions include the iconic Statue of Liberty, Times Square, Empire State Building, and Central Park (to name a few), NYC is so much more than that! But can you explore NYC like a local, and not like a tourist?

We don’t mean that you shouldn’t visit these places. What we’re saying is that NYC is home to even amazing spots that are underrated and often hidden from plain sight. From the Whispering Arch of the Grand Central to the beautiful Stone Street in Manhattan, there are scores of hidden gems in this city that are sure to take your breath away.

Today, we’ll explore some ‘secret,’ not-so-famous attractions that you must see when visiting New York City. So, let’s explore NYC like a local!

1. Visit the Morgan Library and Museum in Murray Hill

This beautiful and historic library feels more like a scene from a Harry Potter movie than a library. Built for Pierpont Morgan between 1902-1906, this momentous building was formerly known as the Pierpont Morgan Library.

It currently houses a museum with a huge collection of manuscripts, books, and artworks and is located between 36th street to the south at 225 Madison Avenue. You can find more about the rich heritage and visitor timings on the library’s website.

2. Walk through New York’s Breathtaking Glass Waterfall

After just a 4-minute walk from Times Square, you’ll reach what’s called the glass waterfall. Snuggled against one side of the famous McGraw-Hill building, it’s a thing of shimmering beauty.

As you stand below the waterfall and allow the water to fall majestically over the glass dome, you feel a sense of relaxation amongst the busy life in New York City. We are not exaggerating; you can clearly see each droplet of water reflected on the glass surface. It’s a pity if you miss this spot during your visit.

3. See the Smallpox Hospital in Roosevelt Island’s

This hospital has a spooky history. It was built on Roosevelt Island in 1856 to quarantine people suffering from smallpox. Featuring a Gothic Revival style, the hospital treated about 7,000 patients every year during its prime.

It was abandoned in the 1950s but was declared a city landmark by the Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1975. There are rumors of ghosts and other supernatural activity within the hospital, so it’s better to visit it during the daytime and take someone with you if you’re faint-hearted. It sure is a must-see spot for all adrenaline junkies!

4. Visit Stone Street in Manhattan

Manhattan is considered one of the best places to stay while visiting New York City by Selina.com. It is competing mainly with Brooklyn for the title of “best borough in NYC”. Both have outstanding reputations, but Manhattan has Stone street, as well.

Located between Whitehall Street in the west to Hanover Square in the east, Stone Street was one of the first streets to be paved with cobblestones and was formerly called Duke Street. Today, it is famous for its eating places and restaurants and is ideal for visiting during the night.

5. Visit the Dead Horse Bay in Brooklyn

Dead Horse Bay is a landfill situated between Marine Park and Jamaica Bay in Brooklyn. This peculiar bay is covered with thousands of glass bottles and other indecomposable material.

Contrary to other places on this list, it is not a location known for its scenic beauty but a reminder about NYC’s past. A time before cars, when people drove horse-and-buggies, and dead horse carcasses were used to manufacture glue and fertilizers.

Dead Horse Bay offers curious minds a glimpse into the past dating as far back as 100 years.

6. See the Old City Hall Subway Station

One of the most remarkable stations in NYC, the Old City Hall station is located at the end of the 6 train line, which terminates at the Brooklyn Bridge in Lower Manhattan. It was closed in the 20th century.

With its stained-glass windows and meticulously designed arches, the Old City Hall station is a true remnant of the old New York City. Having said that, it can be relatively tricky for you to visit.

The MTA Transit Museum runs tours of the station on certain special occasions. These tours allow tourists to catch a glimpse of this marvel of engineering and design. So, it is recommended to check the timings and dates of these visits if you wish to see the station.

7. Experience the Waterfall in Greenacre Park, Midtown

The Greenacre park in Midtown East is famous for its 25-foot waterfall constructed from huge sculpted granite blocks. Built in 1971 by the Greenacre Foundation, it offers tourists a nice distraction from the busy streets of NYC.

Having received several awards for its design, the park has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the US Department of Interior. You can find everything about this exotic location on their official website.

8. See the amazing Fort Tryon Park in Inwood

Get prepared to be amazed by these massive stone arches that look out of another century. The last standing remains of the Tryon Hall Mansion; these stone arches were built between 1901-1905.

Fort Tryon Park is probably NYC’s most beautiful piece of outdoor artwork. An interesting fact about this park, apart from the marvelous stone arches, is that it is home to Manhattan’s largest dog run. You can find the entire history of this park along with the public activities currently on offer on the park website.

9. Whispering Arch of Grand Central Station

The whispering Arch in the Grand Central Station is another amazing hidden attraction in NYC. Well, this one is more like an open secret and is something you have to hear instead of seeing.

All you have to do is to stand facing the corner of the arches and ask a friend to stand on the opposite side of the arches. Now even if you speak in a normal tone, you’ll be amazed to find that your voice will clearly be heard on the other side!

This neat acoustic trick is because of a clever design known as the whispering gallery. Because of its dramatic and unique method of communication, this spot is famous for marriage proposals.

10. Observe the Bird Habitats of Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, Queens

Having saved one of the best spots for the last, we now present to you the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. One of the largest bird habitats in the US, it includes 12,600 acres of water, salt marshes, and upland fields.

Created in the 1950s, Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge is a great place to observe seasonal bird migration. You can visit Jamaica Bay’s website for complete information about the timings and driving directions.

Baby great horned owlet blown from nest in West Hartford WEST HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) – An owlet was blown from its nest in West Hartford on Friday. West Hartford Animal Control said it consulted with A Place Called Hope, a rehabilitation and education center for birds of prey in Killingworth, about the baby great horned owl. It said it was told to get the owlet off the ground. The baby was placed back up in a nearby tree as its mother watched, animal control said. Strong winds were prevalent across the state on Friday. Evergy, the predominant electric provider in Lawrence, resumed rolling blackouts Tuesday morning in an effort to ease the strain on the region’s power grid.

The company said it had shut off power to about 60,000 customers for 30 to 60 minutes on Monday afternoon, and it began similar planned blackouts around 7 a.m. Tuesday, according to the company’s social media accounts.

Utilities throughout the region were asked to implement the rolling blackouts as power plants in the central U.S. were struggling to keep up with the high demand for electricity to heat homes and businesses during one of the coldest periods in recent memory. The air temperature in Lawrence as of 8 a.m. Tuesday was around 20 below zero, and the National Weather Service in Topeka predicted wind chills could reach as low as 30 below before noon.

Residents weren’t being given any advance notice that their neighborhood had been chosen for a rolling blackout, and emergency radio traffic monitored by the Journal-World indicated that numerous major intersections in Lawrence were without power as of 8 a.m. Tuesday. A press release from Evergy on Monday did not provide information on how Evergy was choosing which locations to experience temporary power outages.

City of Lawrence crews were working to get temporary signs in place at intersections without power, the city said around 8:20 a.m. But because of the number of traffic signals out, the city warned that crews may not be able to get to them before the power is restored.

The University of Kansas and many Douglas County school districts, including Lawrence public schools, closed Tuesday because of the cold weather and in anticipation of more power disruptions. Other facilities, including City of Lawrence buildings, closed in an effort to conserve energy. Evergy and other regional utilities, including natural gas provider Black Hills Energy, are asking their customers to take steps, if possible, to reduce their electricity usage during the cold weather.

Whether additional power outages will happen in future days will depend partly on events that stretch far beyond Kansas. Kansas is part of a system called the Southwest Power Pool. Its territory stretches over 17 states, including parts of Texas and other southern states that are seeing historically cold temperatures that have fueled record high electricity usage.

All power produced by Evergy — which previously was known as Westar Energy — is part of the Southwest Power Pool grid. If electricity demands in the other states part of the Southwest Power Pool remain high, that could affect the need for rolling blackouts in places like Kansas.

Temperatures in the Lawrence area are expected to warm slightly over the coming days, but wind chills will likely remain below zero until late this week.

Connect GoPro to PC/Mac using GoPro Quik for Desktop. To connect GoPro camera to PC/Mac for photos and videos transferring, actually GoPro has its own software. That’s GoPro Quik. The free software is installed in the same way you install any app on the Mac - download the file and double-click to begin the installation process. The first step is to download and set up the Quick GoPro app; Then, use a USB to connect the GoPro camera to your Mac; Start the Quik App, and you come across the “import files” option. You can then import the photos using the app to your computer. NB: If you happen to experience the GoPro not connecting problem, then repeat the above steps. Download files from gopro to mac. Upload with SD Card Reader (Fastest Method) This is my favorite method because it is the fastest. From there you can drag & drop the files from your SD card to your computer. Method #3 - Automatically with Image Capture. Image Capture allows you to: Import files to a location of your choice; Delete files; View files before importing; Select the file(s) you want to Import and select Import, or Import All if you want to import everything. Use and SD card reader, it's the fastest way to do it and it gives you full access to your SD card. Trying to hook the camera up with a USB cable can be problematic, up to 50% slower and only gives you access to video and photo files, no lrv or thm files.
