The radio drama(?) version of Starship Titanic from 2021, courtesy of the Internet Archive
BBC 4's original description:
Michael Palin stars in an exclusive adaptation of Terry Jones's comic novel. A tale of interstellar skulduggery, romance and unhinged robots based in Douglas Adams's universe.
Far off in the centre of one of the less well-chartered quadrants of the universe, a vast civilisation is preparing to launch the most technologically advanced starship ever - Starship Titanic While the galaxy's media looks on, it unfortunately undergoes SMEF (Spontaneous Massive Existence Failure) and disappears. Leovinus, the designer of the ship, uncovers shoddy workmanship, poor cybernetics and a series of increasingly eccentric robots. The owners, Scraliontis and Brobostigan, were intent on destroying the ship and claiming the insurance.
Meanwhile in Oxfordshire, four humans are inspecting a property they intend buying, only to see it crushed under the re-materialising Starship. This disaster is swiftly followed by an invitation from an over-attentive robot to come aboard, and Lucy, Dan and Nettie are catapulted into a series of increasingly bizarre encounters.
Stylistically emulating the work of the great Douglas Adams in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the late Terry Jones weaves a fabulously mad and comic tale, adapted by Ian Billings and directed by Dirk Maggs, who also directed the last four editions of the Hitchhiker's sagas.
Cast: Tom Alexander, Ian Billings, Nicholas Boulton, Rupert Degas, Philip Pope, Alana Ramsey, Rebecca Yeo. With a special guest appearance by Simon Jones, who played Arthur Dent in Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy.

Weekend Top Ten #472
Top Ten Suggestions for Future Star Wars Games
Concluding an accidental trilogy of Top Ten lists that feature the word “Star”, here we journey back to a galaxy far, far away. This is also one of those lists that’s been bubbling under for quite a while, since the announcement (feels like ages ago now) that Disney have shopped the Star Wars licence around to a number of developers, and we’ll get future games from companies other than EA. But really it goes back even further, because for me Star Wars and gaming are inexorably linked. I associate my teenage PC gaming phase very closely with Star Wars, because it occurred in the mid-nineties, when Star Wars games were truly ascendent. In a run that I would argue stretched from the release of X-Wing in 1993, right through to Knights of the Old Republic in 2003, it felt like just about every genre was getting a nod from the House of Skywalker, and generally speaking the games were excellent. This time also saw the resurgence of Star Wars as a multimedia powerhouse, with the films getting reissued on video (and in Widescreen!) before the 1997 release of the Special Editions, the subsequent DVD releases, and then in 1999, the beginnings of the Prequel Trilogy with The Phantom Menace. You could argue that that’s when the wheels fell off, because even with the “Han Shot First” controversy and mixed reaction to some of the new effects shots, the late-nineties releases had been warmly received, Star Wars felt cool and exciting all the time, and anticipation was building to fever pitch at the thought of new movies. Amidst the Jar Jar hatred there was, I think, a bit more antipathy towards stories set in the Clone Wars, and although there were still some very good games being released (the first LEGO Star Wars came out in 2005!), the spark of the Golden Age was mostly absent.
Could we be entering a new Golden Age, or at least a Silver Age? Maybe; hopefully! I really, really enjoyed Jedi: Fallen Order and Squadrons, even though neither are perfect and both have plenty of rough edges. Now that the Skywalker Saga is out of the way and the franchise as a whole is spreading out into new areas (check out the number of Disney+ shows on the way), perhaps we’ll see all different facets of the galaxy explored in games too. And that’s what this list is: ten possible games, set in the Star Wars universe, that I think would be cool.
For the most part I’m not trying to invent a whole game; rather, it’s “Star Wars in this genre” or “Star Wars with this hook”. There’s probably an exception or two here and there, but you’ll get the drift. Some of these have been in my mental wishlist for years, from right back to when I first played X-Wing on my mate’s Mac, or when I installed a friend’s copy of Dark Forces from floppy disk (we, er, did that in those days). One of the best things about Star Wars is that it contains multitudes; George Lucas really did create a whole galaxy full of weird side characters, intriguing backstory, and funky-looking locations (aided and abetted, of course, by a bevy of talented collaborators). What corner of the universe couldn’t support a game of some kind?
So here’s to the future, to the newly-rechristened Lucasfilm Games, and to ten titles that could all benefit from beginning with those classic blue words on a black background.
Jedi Padawan RPG: I’ve wanted a game like this for about twenty years: a third-person action-RPG where you play a Padawan. You create your character and build your lightsaber, and then follow your master on missions around the Republic, learning the ways of the Force and developing your character. In a way, Fallen Order has adopted some of these ideas; the fact you only use a lightsaber and Force powers, for instance. But in my mind this is more similar to something like the first Fable, or maybe Mass Effect, where you’d have a hub to return to (the Jedi Temple) and then go off on missions that you could choose. All the while there’d be a plot bubbling up, and an arc to follow, and all sorts of quasi-open-world Jedi shenanigans. It’d be cool if they could make lightsabers feel like the really dangerous one-hit-kill weapons they are in the films, or if you could use them to, y’know, open doors and stuff. Maybe this could be set in the “High Republic” era we’re starting to explore.
Deus Ex-style first-person RPG: I suppose this one could be reductively called “Cyberpunk on Coruscant”, but the idea is you’d play someone – not a Jedi, in my mind – going on quests or solving some kind of mystery, shooting people in first person whilst also upgrading your body and abilities in typical RPG style. I wouldn’t want it to be too dark; I don’t like it when people try to make Star Wars “edgy”. But that Mandalorian or Rogue One tone of seriousness interspersed with Star Wars’ typical melodrama and weirdness would be good. I see your character as a small-time crook or maybe a minor mercenary who by circumstance is forced to take missions for either the Rebels or the Empire (or maybe First Order and Resistance); perhaps mirroring Poe Dameron’s journey from spice smuggler to X-Wing superstar. It’d be cool if there was Fallout-style hit-modelling on characters, and if your arm or whatever got damaged, you could have it replaced with a robot one.
Star Wars meets Elite: I even have a title for this one: “Scoundrel”. Basically, like I say, it’s Elite but in the Star Wars universe; you have a ship, you fly from planet to planet, you trade goods or offer passage, you spend your money on upgrading your ship or buying a new one. You’re Han Solo, basically; hence “Scoundrel”. In my mind it’s set at the dawn of the Rebellion, so you can choose where your allegiances – and your ethics – lie. Take on official Imperial assignments? Help their war effort? Stay neutral but legal? Stay out of the politics, but, y’know, smuggle a little bit? Run a bit of spice? Or do you go all-in and work for the Rebellion – even take part in military action? Maybe it could even run all the way up to Return of the Jedi and give you the chance to fight in the Battle of Endor! C’mon, this one has “hit” written all over it.
Clone Troopers turn-based “Tactics” game: by “Tactics” I mean like X-COM or, well, Gears Tactics; turn-based team combat games. I think of all the groups of military characters most suited to this style, it would be the Clone Troopers; they’re a well-organised military force that functions as part of a team. We know there are loads of types of Troopers, with different uniforms for different jobs, so there’s lots of room for customising your team, as well as experimenting with different classes. Plus if they die there’s more to come, they’re just in vats! Get Temuera Morrison to voice them all for added authenticity.
A point-and-click adventure: this was the first ever idea I had for a Star Wars game, because at the time I was really, really into adventures. This could be anything; I’m not too fussed on the plot. Some kind of mystery obviously lends itself to the format. Whether you play as the same character all the way through or switch protagonists (a common genre trope), I don’t mind. But I want it to be a fairly straightforward, old-fashioned point-and-click game, with no action or QTEs. Make it look like Thimbleweed Park, make it look like Clone Wars or Rebels, make it look as real as possible, it’s all fine; just give me a slow-burn narrative adventure story in the Star Wars universe please.
Lemmings, but with porgs: yeah, there’s nothing more to add to this. Maybe you play one of the Space Nuns, or even Chewbacca, and you have to help out all these crazy porgs? They’re just wandering around, getting into mischief, chewing on the Falcon or playing with a lightsaber, and they’ll kill themselves if you don’t help. That’s it. That’s the game. Lemmings, but with porgs.
Rebel base construction/management game: my template here would be stuff like Evil Genius or Two Point Hospital: real-time games where you build different rooms or services in a given play space. So, the Rebels are constantly darting all over the galaxy, setting up shop temporarily and then evacuating when the Empire comes a-calling; here, you have to kit out the different bases, often to service different aims (a recon base, an aerial support base, a training centre, etc), and in different planetary conditions (think Hoth, Yavin, or Crait). Obviously there are essentials: communication, power, accommodation. Then you can build starship docks, weapons arrays, bacta tanks, astromech services, even Jedi training rooms. Instead of attracting “customers” the idea is to be recruiting new Rebels, so the bigger and better your base, the more troops you have. Maybe there can even be some kind of meta-game where the progress of the war is smoother if your bases are better? But there’d be virtually no combat, apart from maybe shooting probe droids or scaring away wampas. Anyway, I think it sounds cool.
Rebel Commandos cover-shooter: I guess this could also be a Clone Trooper game, but we’ve already had a Clone FPS, and I just invented Clone Tactics up the page a bit, so let’s spread the love. It’s basically Gears of War but with the Rebel Alliance. Think about the Battle of Endor or the Battle of Scarif; teams of well-trained and battle-hardened troopers up against superior odds but still kickin’ ass. Unlike the rent-a-clone nature of the Tactics game, this would be more story-driven, with a small team (four, maybe, as it’s a good number for co-op) who have to infiltrate and/or assault heavily-fortified enemy positions. I think this could be good with a nice narrative behind it, fleshing out the Star Wars universe, and maybe offering a bit of those Rogue One-style shades of grey.
Fallout Shelter-style Jawa Sandcrawler management game: utini! Jawas are great aren’t they? Whether it’s electrocuting Artoo, cheering at podracers, or just eating the shit out of a great big egg, everyone loves a good Jawa. How can you make a game about Jawas? Well, what about if you’re this tribe or group or whatever of Jawas, and you’ve got your own knackered sandcrawler. And as part of the game you have to develop it, tart it up a bit, recruit new bands of Jawas, and then, y’know, rob droids and flog ‘em. Like Fallout Shelter, you have to build and maintain different rooms in the sandcrawler to grow your people and earn more cash from droids, but you’re constrained a little by size. The sandcrawler can’t be expanded too much, and although you could upgrade to bigger ones, you have to make strategic decisions about where to allocate precious space. I see this as being quite low-fi and stylised (bring back Yoda Stories!), and working as a kind of chilled-out time-wasting game on Switch or something.
Homeworld, but in the Clone Wars: and we’re back to the Clone Wars again! But here, we kind of have to, as it’s the only war in the Star Wars wars that features two huge and evenly-matched armadas (Rebels vs Empire and Resistance vs First Order are both very much “scrappy underdogs up against vast organised militaries”). Playing as the Republic or the Separatists, you have to maintain huge fleets of capital ships, support craft, fighters and bombers, and go on missions to attack, defend, or escort. It’s probably the best way to recreate the feeling of that absolutely vast battles we see in the opening minutes of Revenge of the Sith. Maybe an add-on could even give us ground battles too, recreating scenes such as the Battle of Geonosis. Anyway, sounds cool don’t you think?
Incidentally – and speaking of the Star Wars of it all – this is the first week that we’re not watching a War for our family movie night. We’ve done ‘em all! All the episodes of the Skywalker Saga, the two live-action spin-off movies, and even (well, me an’ the eldest) the animated Clone Wars movie. I might do another Top Ten ranking them, based on the kids’ opinions; that’d be interesting. Although – of course – we’ve only got a couple of weeks to wait until the two Ewok movies hit Disney+. What a time to be alive!
Now, the Ewoks – there’s a good idea for a game there…

13 Reasons Why The Phantom Menace is a Great Star Wars Movie
13 Reasons Why The Phantom Menace is a Great Star Wars Movie
While The Phantom Menace was one of the hottest movies of 1999, people and even fans have soured on Episode I over the years, mostly blaming Jar Jar Binks for their dislike of the movie. But I believe the film will stand the test of time and will continue to be rewatched over and over again. My children loved watching it while growing up and I believe future generations will discover it as they grow up and watch it with fresh eyes and enjoy it too. Us old timers will pass on and young kids will continue to fall in love with The Phantom Menace as the years roll on.
As this year is the 20th Anniversary of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, I decided to write down a few things, 13 of them in fact, that I like about The Phantom Menace. This movie lays a lot of groundwork for the Star Wars Skywalker Saga and introduces characters, organizations, and the Force that we will revisit over and over again throughout the course of the next 10 films.
The Jedi
We finally get to see the Jedi in action! We see the Jedi Temple, there is a distinction of skill levels with Master, Knight, and Padawan.
We get to see the Jedi Council, Yoda, Mace, and others. A lot of intriguing aliens on the Jedi Council, it’s definitely a different perspective.
We see the Jedi Padawan testing as Mace Windu tests Anakin to see if he can use the Force with some type of mastery. We also get mention of the Jedi Trials and confirmation that they exist, but still no other information on what they are or when they would take place.
The Jedi Temple is a large building with presumably a lot of Jedi living there. We learn that Jedi normally start out young, with Yoda’s statement that 9 year old Anakin is too old. It is later fleshed out in the The Clone Wars animated series that Force sensitive children are identified within the first year or two of their lives and are taken to the Jedi Temple for training. In this film we only see the Jedi Council room and the Jedi Masters that make up the Council, as well as a side balcony that Qui-Got and Obi-Wan have a conversation on for a minute or two.
One of the first scenes in the film is Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan in action against the Trade Federation battle droids. They are proficient with their lightsabers and use the Force to their advantage.
New Organizations
One of the first groups we are introduced to is the Trade Federation. They have a lot of power and are involved in the Senate and apparently can help make Galactic policy. They are lead by the alien race, the Neimodians, and have a battle droid army that they use without thought to control planets and systems to get what they want.
The mythological Jedi are keepers of the peace with laser swords and have a mastery of the Force. They can act outside of the law and have their own agendas. They are not beholden to the Galactic Senate.
We get our first look at the grandeur of the Republic Senate and just how many planets and organizations are represented in the Republic. We see Wookiee’s, Neimodian’s, humans, Rodians, and even ET’s! Due to the massive amount of representatives in the Senate, there is a lot of corruption and bureaucracy that must be overcome in every decision that is made.
We are introduced to the Sith, the enemies of the Jedi, and the doctrine of the Rule of Two. As Yoda states, Always two there are, no more no less, A Master and an apprentice. We get to watch Darth Sidious, the master, and his apprentice, Darth Maul, try to outmaneuver and best the Senate and the Jedi throughout this film.
An interesting dynamic is presented throughout this film, the concept of symbiosis and balance. We see it with the Jedi and Sith and also with the Naboo governments- the Gungans and the humans. One of the overarching stories of the film is how the Naboo were separate and throughout the film are brought together and work together to defeat the Trade Federation invasion of Naboo. The Gungans and the Naboo humans thought poorly of each other before this and after the invasion came together to create a Peace that benefitted both societies.
Different Planets
We get to see different planets that appear in Episode I that we also visit throughout this Prequel trilogy of Episode I, II, and III..
Naboo the home planet of Queen Amidala and Senator Palpatine. It is a lush, paradisical planet. We also see the metropolitan planet of Coruscant which is the metropolitan center of the galaxy, where the Senate and other major organizations have their headquarters. While the idea of this planet was conceived of by George Lucas in drafts of Return of the Jedi, it wasn’t until the Thrawn Trilogy of books in the 1990’s written by Timothy Zahn, that the planet was named Coruscant. This name and planet first debuted in the 1997 Special Edition of The Return of the Jedi and then more fully explored in The Phantom Menace and the Prequel trilogy.
We get to visit the desert planet of Tatooine, which while some claim that it is the furthest point from the bright center of the Universe, it ends up playing a central role in the Star Wars Saga.
The Force is Introduced
We see various uses as well as different powers of The Force that are used by the Jedi, and the Sith. As Qui-Gon Jinn teaches his padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi, we are also taught of the different uses of the Force. We are introduced to the concept of midichlorians, a vergence of the Force, and the Prophesy of the Chosen One. We learn that there are not only a Dark Side and Light Side of the Force, but also a Living Force and a Cosmic Force ( that is later explored in The Clone Wars).
These concepts are mentioned throughout the Star Wars Saga, but unfortunately never fully explained. We do see how The Force is used by the Jedi and Sith throughout the Saga, things such as using the The Force to push things, pull things towards you, jump higher, run faster, use the Force to help someone relax or fall asleep, and to use the Force to mentally trick someone to do what you wish them to do.
Darth Sidious’ Machinations
One of the greatest villains of all time, maybe only surpassed by his future apprentice, Darth Vader. But truly, Sidious creates a conflict and seizes control of the biggest, most powerful organization in the galaxy - The Senate. He plays one side against the other so well, that the Jedi, Senate, and others don’t know what has happened until it’s over. Darth Sidious IS The Phantom Menace.
Trade Federation and their Droid Army
The Trade Federation are the bad guys, but are they really? They just want to get paid for their services. But I do find it interesting that they have a droid army prepped and ready to go. This army is solely theirs and they command it. It would stand to reason that there have been trade disputes on other planets in the past, and this is why they have an army. This allows them to protect their organization and their interests. Also it’s possible that trade disputes may be common as the Senate doesn’t seem to think much of Naboo’s conflict and are willing to let things play out despite the invasion of Naboo by the Trade Federation.
R2 and C3PO Meet for the First Time
While you wouldn’t guess it in this film, R2-D2 and C-3PO, are major players in the Star Wars Saga and this is the film where they meet for the first time. There is some foreshadowing while they are together, so if you pay attention you’ll see it play out later on in the Saga.
Darth Maul
The ultimate Sith Lord and a fan favorite. We are introduced to Darth Maul and his abilities about halfway through the film as he confronts Qui-Gon Jinn on Tatooine. The Jedi are able to escape and we, the audience, are left wanting more, and we definitely get more at the end of the film. Darth Maul epitomizes everything we would imagine an ultimate warrior to be. He’s quick, agile, ruthless, ferocious, and has amazing lightsaber skills. Whatever your opinion of The Phantom Menace, I would bet that you thoroughly enjoyed it when Darth Maul was on screen. Watch The Clone Wars for more info on Darth Maul and where he came from - and more.
Anakin Skywalker and Padme Amidala Meet and They Have Their First Adventure
Anakin is nine years old and Padme is twelve years old when they first meet. If you look at the numbers, it is definitely weird. However, we all know once we hit adulthood, age difference isn’t that big of a deal. The Phantom Menace is a good time period for these two to establish a friendship that can be rekindled later on in life (which we see in the next film Attack of the Clones). Anakin is infatuated with Padme, as she’s a beautiful Queen from another world, which fascinates him. This leads him to drop the ultimate pickup line in Star Wars, “Are you an angel?”
Anakin invites Padme, Qui-Gon, and Jar Jar to his home to meet his mother. Anakin and Padme form a connection as he shows her around his room and they talk.
Unfortunately for Anakin, Padme just sees him as this cute little boy, which he is at this point.
We get to see Anakin help Padme get off Tatooine by winning the podrace and he accompanies her and the Jedi to Coruscant. He gives her the japoor snippet as something to remember her by as they share a sweet moment on the Naboo starship on their way to Coruscant. They further cement their relationship when upon returning to Naboo, Anakin is involved in the Battle of Naboo and plays a key role in freeing the Naboo from the Trade Federation. He is hailed as a hero and Padme is impressed with this cute little boy from Tatooine who is to be trained as a Jedi.
The Podrace!
The podrace is one of the most exciting events of the film and is something we don’t really see in Star Wars again. Anakin enters the podrace to try and help his new friends get the hyperdrive part they need for their starship. He is one of the best pilots in the outer rim, thanks to his Force sensitivity, and as a result he has been able to challenge the best podracers in the past. We get to see Anakin put these piloting skills on full display as he overcomes several challenging situations to eventually defeat his rival Sebulba and win the Boonta Eve podrace.
Aside from the dramatic story, we get to see some amazing visuals and sound design as they podrace through the landscape of Tatooine. We are exposed to Jawa’s, Tusken Raider’s and we even get to see Beggar’s Canyon.
Anakin and His Mother Say Goodbye
As Anakin gets ready to leave Tatooine and accompany the Jedi to Coruscant so he can train to be a Jedi himself, upon parting his mother, Shmi Skywalker, tells Anakin to be brave and don’t look back. This is one the most emotional moments of The Phantom Menace and a moment that drives the rest of the Prequel trilogy. As Anakin leaves his mother, he isn’t sure if it’s the right thing, but he wants to do it. This emotional attachment to his mother is a hard thing for him to let go, and he never really does let go.
Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi Meet for the First Time
A momentous meeting that impacts the rest of the galaxy. Anakin is a 9 year old boy and Obi-Wan is just a Jedi Padawan learning the ways of the Force and the Jedi. Anakin is excited to meet another, younger Jedi, while Obi-Wan sees him as another Jar Jar Binks - another pet project of Qui Gon Jinn. They don’t interact much in the film as Qui Gon takes him under his wing and tries to teach Anakin as they move through the story. At the end of the film, Obi-Wan feels a loyalty to Qui-Gon and his dying words to “train the boy” as he is “the Chosen One”.
The Final Battle
The film culminates in the climactic Battle of Naboo where we get two separate ground battles, a space battle, and a 2 on 1 lightsaber duel! There’s a lot going on in the last part of this film. Queen Amidala and the Jedi come up with a plan to overthrow the Trade Federation by creating a diversion on the plains of Naboo with an army of Gungans, which draws out the battle droid army from the city of Theed. Once this happens, pilots sneak into the hangar and take off to attack the droid control ship above the planet. If they can destroy the control ship, this will power down and neutralize the droids.
During this covert operation, Darth Maul appears to stop them. The Jedi separate from the main group for a 2 on 1 lightsaber duel. Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon are literally pushed to the brink as they struggle to defeat the Sith Lord, Darth Maul. Qui-Gon is mortally wounded in the fight, but Ob-Wan is able to defeat Darth Maul.
Queen Amidala and her group continue on battling droids through the halls of the palace to eventually capture the Viceroy of the Trade Federation and claim victory.
Bonus Reasons:
Jar Jar Binks
Yes, Jar Jar Binks. He’s comedic relief for a movie for kids starring a 9 year old protagonist. I first saw Star Wars in theaters at age 4 maybe 5 years old. Star Wars movies have always had a juvenile, comedic element to them. Jar Jar Binks is that for this movie. Kids think he’s funny, and as I get older - so do I. Not sure what that means...
The Soundtrack
The Phantom Menace soundtrack by John Williams is exquisite and one of the best of the Star Wars Saga. The Duel of the Fates track is on par with The Imperial March and other great Star Wars music. John Williams shines even more with the music in this film. As Star Wars music fans, we also get treated to the only Ultimate Soundtrack release in the whole Saga. The Ultimate Soundtrack is like listening to the music from the film from the beginning to end credits.
The Phantom Menace in 3-D
In February 2012, The Phantom Menace was released in theaters once again but in 3-D. The film was only in theaters for about a couple of months, but it was fun to revisit the film in the new format and experience in a new way

Ultraman Series Available on TOKU TV’s Amazon Channel
I have previously written a small guide to the Ultraman series available on Crunchyroll, which can be found here X. However, if you have an Amazon Prime subscription and are willing to pay about $4 extra a month on top of that, TOKU TV has an Amazon Channel that includes a bunch of Ultra series a few other Tsuburaya productions tokusatsu entries as well. Some of these are also available elsewhere and I will note that as we go.
:Let’s get started. I am going to cover these in roughly chronological order.
The ☆ Ultraman
This is the only animated series on this list and hails from 1979. It was a bold idea to created an anime based on Ultraman and the job fell to a relatively new studio called Sunrise. They would go on that same year to create a little show called Mobile Suit Gundam so it is fun to see them tackle the Ultra heroes as well.
Ultraman 80
Also available on Crunchyroll, this was the last full TV series of the Showa Era for Ultraman. Though the tone varies at times and whole plot threads and groups of characters get dropped after episode 20 or so, it is still a very good series to watch and the lead, Yamato Takeshi, is one of my favorite human forms for an Ultra hero to borrow.
Ultraman Neos
Originally planned as a TV series but scrapped, this entry in the franchise appeared as a straight to video entry in 2000. This is something of a soft reboot and takes place in an alternate universe from the main M78 series even though it does have a cameo from Zoffy. A fun and short series at only 12 episodes.
Ultraman Nexus
This is another series also available on Crunchyroll and was an attempt to create a more mature Ultra show to appeal to the older fans. It was sadly not a success but it is a fascinating entry in the franchise with its darker tone, morally complex heroes and creepy monster designs.
Ultraman Mebius
Created to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Ultraman, this 2006 series was the first since Ultraman 80 to be explicitly set in the original M78 Continuity. It is a celebration of all the shows that came before and a fantastic entry in the franchise. Though it is also available on Crunchyroll, TOKU also got the rights to the Side Story straight to video stories Armored Darkness, HIkari Saga and Ghost Reverse.
Ultraseven X
Originally airing in 2007 to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Ultraseven, this was yet another series aimed at an older audience. Set in a very dark alternate universe, Ultraseven merges with an agent of a mysterious anti-alien organization to track down creatures of the dark that threaten to invade multiple realities.
Ultra Galaxy Mega Monster Battle
Though this series was created as a tie-in to a collectible card game, it is still a very interesting Ultra series that has only brief cameos from the Ultra Heroes but instead focuses on the crew of the starship Pendragon who find themselves stranded on a hostile alien world overrun with Kaiju. There they meet a young man with no memory who can control the giant monsters! The story continues and expands in a second series called Ultra Galaxy Mega Monster Battle Never Ending Odyssey which is also available for streaming on TOKU.
The next few series are all available on Crunchyroll so for longer descriptions of them, please see my guide to that service’s offerings.
Ultraman Ginga
Ultraman X
Ultraman Orb
(Sadly though, neither TOKU nor Amazon Prime US has begun streaming the Amazon Prime Japan original series Ultraman Orb The Origin Saga at least as of this writing).
Ultraman Zero: The Chronicle
The newest series available from TOKU is a compilation series retelling Ultraman Zero’s story from his first appearance up to just before he appeared in Ultraman Geed.
There are also a few non-Ultra Tsuburaya series starting with:
Mirrorman
This 1971 series tells the story of a hero who travels to Earth to join a defense organization in their mission to protect the planet from strange invaders. It is very Ultraman-esque.
Denkou Choujin Gridman
Another very Ultraman-like series, this 1993 show has the unique twist of placing all of the battle inside of the computer realm. This show was the basis from the US series Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad and is getting an anime reboot this October from Studio Trigger.
Neo Ultra Q
A sort of anthology series featuring strange monsters, weird phenomena and creepy happenings this is a modern sequel to Tsuburaya’s first TV series and a very good show to watch on a dark night wrapped in blankets with a hot mug of cocoa or a stiff drink.
There you go, just wanted to let other fans know what else is available from Tsuburaya via legitimate streaming services. Happy viewing!
Edit: All of these are subtitled in English.

First Impression: Space Dandy
An earlier version of this post was published on Facebook on April 6, 2018. It was the second of two posts, the other being Please Tell Me! Galko-Chan.
Refreshed and refilled with food and drink, I'm back already for more.
PAUL IS WEEABOO TRASH— DOUBLE DOUBLE EDITION; or,
Paul Reviews Two Things Based on Two Episodes Each (and a Martini)
FULL-ASSED EPISODE 7: Space Dandy (2014)
"Enough with this mass boob hysteria. It's time to set things right. It's time to give the ass the respect it deserves!" So begins the voyage of James T. Kirk— er, I mean Zapp Brannigan— er, no, seriously, I mean SPACE DANDY. He's a dandy guy. In space. Doing space adventures. With his space crew. He’s not really a “dandy” per se, since he’s hardly “refined”, but his name is Dandy.
Anyway.
Dandy makes a living as a space Pokémon trainer, by which I mean he wanders the galaxy (mostly at locations of Hooters-parody restaurant chain "Boobies") to kidnap aliens previously unknown to humanity and collect a reward for cataloguing them. But then an intergalactic war catches up with him. Or tries to, but he escapes through sheer dumb luck. In the second episode, they resume their search for new aliens by tracking down the source of legendarily-delicious ramen from another dimension, narrowly escaping one side in the intergalactic war (the Gogol Empire, which is *totally* not Google although they try to use "Galaxy Street View" to find them) in the process.
It's a rambling and fun sci-fi comedy, which you all probably know is a combination of genres I love. And the fact that Shinichiro Watanabe wrote and directed it is a good sign from the start. (That's Shinichiro Watanabe of Cowboy Bebop; not to be confused with Shinichi (no "ro") Watanabe, director of Excel Saga, although I wouldn't be surprised to see his name on this either, especially considering that all of the characters die in the first episode. Oh, was that a spoiler? Don't worry, they all come back in episode 2 as if nothing happened.)
It seems so far like it's just going to be loosely-connected adventures of Dandy, QT, and Merowmreowreow (a cat-like Betelgeusian who Dandy calls "Meow" because he can't pronounce his name). As much as that description — a human, a robot, and a Betelgeusian — suggests Arthur, Marvin, and Ford, the dynamic is much more like Zapp Brannigan, Kif, and... Fry, I guess? QT is the exasperated straight man to Dandy's confident incompetence and success through sheer luck, while Meow so far seems to be a likable slob. I will definitely keep on with this, and try to get my wife to watch it too*. The only downside to this show so far is that I still like Futurama more and this makes me want to watch that.
Recommended if you like Futurama (obviously), Bravest Warriors, and/or, of course, Cowboy Bebop, although it's only barely like any of them in specific characterizations or plot points and definitely has its own feel.
-----
W/A/S Scores: 1/5/1
Weeb: Neither sci-fi-comedy nor space opera (as Wikipedia characterizes it) is a Japanese-specific genre, and nothing really left me going "huh?" or thinking other people would. Honestly, the most Japanese thing I've noticed so far is the idea of ramen being available at actual restaurants instead of just in instant packets, which... well... as tempting as it is to say the Southwest isn't part of the US, it's available here, too. Or maybe this is because I'm watching the dub, and they've successfully created Americanized jokes that work in context?
Ass: Come on. Like I said, several scenes take place in a parody of Hooters called Boobies. What do you think?
Shit: I LOVE THE WAY THIS SHOW LOOKS. Exaggerated facial expressions! Flowing movements! Psychedelic visuals! Non-humanoid aliens! Totally absurd starship designs! Plus, great background music and topical parodies, mainly of social media! UPDATE ADDED WHEN EDITING THIS FOR TUMBLR REPOST: I’ve watched the first season and there’s like, character development and wild mood differences between episodes and escalating ridiculousness and a second season and aaaaaah this show is really good you guys, go watch it. ----- * Update: now she loves it too.

Class 720 freighters were a type of transport. Although never rising to compete with the dominant YT-series, Class 720s were excellent alternatives, popular in the Outer Rim. They were upgradable, and came equipped with a blaster cannon and shielding. Many of the vessels were modified for smuggling.

New Post has been published on https://techcrunchapp.com/biggest-game-trailers-news-and-announments-so-far/
biggest game trailers, news, and announments so far
Gamescom 2020 is happening right now, and we’re listing the best games we’ve seen so far. Stick around for an overview of every Gamescom game trailer we’ve seen so far.
This year’s event is free and streaming online to millions of fans. The show goes from August 27 to August 30. Stick around if you are looking forward to the best game trailers and announcements, and premieres. Furthermore, the last days of the event are sharing some eSports news as well.
So far, the highlight has been Ratchet & Clank: Rifts Apart, a PlayStation 5 exclusive title. Furthermore, it was the game that showed the most extended gameplay trailer. As a result, I’d say it’s the most exciting next-gen game trailer we’ve seen in a while.
Check the official Gamescom page.

Check PlayStation blog for further info
Ratchet & Clank: Rifts Apart is a stand-alone aventure on a saga that already has
We continue talking about the PlayStation 5 with a new gameplay trailer. Yesterday, Sony debuted next-gen footage for Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.
The studio explained Ratchet & Clank would premiere during the PS5’s “launch window.”
Insomniac Games studio showed the 5-minute-long clip at the Gamescom Opening Night Live 2020. The studio intended to show the full power of the PS5 with its Rifts Apart gameplay trailer.
We already saw the first Ratchet & Clank trailer with some gameplay on the clip. The new video extends on what we already saw, and left enough reasons to leave fans excited.
The demo showcases a glorious 3D jump & shoot platformer. It looks great, it seems fast, and it renders rich scenarios in mere seconds.
Moreover, the highlight of the game is how the characters jump from one world to another entirely different world without any load times. Going from one point to another is instantaneous. It’s a display of what the PS5 specs are capable of doing. In particular, Sony explains its custom SSD accelerates games’ load times.
For everything it showed, we claim this PS5 exclusive takes the pie as the best Gamescom 2020 trailer.
Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition
Platform: Windows 10
Release date: October 15, 2020
Studio: Tantalus Media / Forgotten Empire
Publisher: Xbox Game Studios

Nothing new here, just another remake of one of the best RTS games in history!
Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition brings back the classic Industrial Age strategy game to modern times. It delivers 4Kgraphics and enhanced audio. It also includes all of the original expansions.
On top of all, it includes all-new content. Most notably, the new content includes two new civilizations (Incas and Swedes).
Unsurprisingly, it also includes a bunch of quality of life improvements. In short, AoE III: Definitive Edition brings smarter AI and faster, more responsive systems.
Lastly, the most exciting part about this title is its cross-platform multiplayer feature. You can get it on either store (Steam, Microsoft, or AoE so far) and still play together with your friends.
Microsoft showed the first official teaser, and we consider it a great way to wait for Age of Empires 4.

Spellbreak is a unique Battle Royale that combines RPG elements with shooter gameplay. What sets this game apart from the competition is that, instead of shooting, you’d be wielding powerful spells against your enemies.
Even though it looks like a promising game, Gamescom 2020 was first to show the trailer. Let’s hope it catches as much attention as Fall Guys.
Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War
Platform: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, XSX, Windows 10
Release date: late 2020
Studio: Treyarch / Raven Software
Publisher: Activision-Blizzard
youtube
“A Russian boogieman”
The Cold War has never looked so realistic. The upcoming Call of Duty sets you following the trail of a Russian spy codenamed “Perseus.”
There’s still no actual gameplay footage to be seen, though. Activision has only been able to show us the setting of Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War. Moreover, the publisher is waiting until September 9 to show us how the upcoming fps plays.

Platform: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, XSX, Windows 10, Google Stadia
Release date: 2021
Studio: Deep Silver / Fishlabs
Publisher: Deep Silver

Check on Steam
Deep Silver and Fishlabs bring forward the classic Star Fox design to deliver a next-gen sci-fi shooter.
Chorus takes players on a quest to destroy a dark cult that created Nara, the main character. Even so, its simple setting seems enough to unlock a mind-blowing space-combat action with evolving abilities and weapons. More so, it has a sentient starship.
Star Wars Squadrons
Platform: PS4, Xbox One, Windows PC
Release date: October 2, 2020
Studio: Motive Studios
Publisher: Electronic Arts
youtube
The new Electronic Arts proposal revolves around space combat, and it looks like a total ace. Taking a look at its first trailer makes it easy to understand: Squadrons is a must-play for Star Wars fans.
It has the spirit of the classical Lucas Art saga. Moreover, the upcoming game will allow us to play as either the Empire or the Rebel Alliance. Commanding iconic starships, we’ll wage space war on a faraway galaxy.
Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time
Platform: PS4, Xbox One
Release date: late 2020
Studio: Toys for Bob
Publisher: Activision

Crash Bandicoot 4 brings back classic elements of the trilogy with extra fun and exploration. Plus, it packs an irresistible visual quality.

Release date: 2021
Studio: TT Games / Traveler’s Tales
Publisher: Warner Bros Interactive
youtube
The Skywalker saga (minus Rey) is one of the most extraordinary tales we’ve seen in cinema.
Lucky for us, LEGO brings it back with its crazy-fun format. Alas, humor, adventure, and lots of jokes are at your disposal.
Jurassic World Evolution: Complete Edition
Platform: Nintendo Switch
Release date: 2021
Studio: TT Games / Traveler’s Tales
Publisher: Warner Bros Interactive

The John Hammon simulator is arriving at Nintendo Switch. That means you’ll be able yo manage your own Jurassic Park.
Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond
Platform: Windows PC
Release date: late 2020
Studio: Respawn Entertainment
Publisher: Electronic Arts
youtube
Medal of Honor is coming back in full force with Respawn Entertainment. This time, though, it’s going to be a VR title that follows the story of one of the earliest entries of the saga.
However, the trailer shows the story, not the gameplay. We hope to see a better trailer in the upcoming months nonetheless.
Gamescom 2020 announcements
There’s a couple of announcements we learned at Gamescom 2020 we would like to share. These announcements include games far down the production line, though.
Furthermore, we included a couple of DLCs in this category.
Upcoming Dragon Age game
Platform: PS4, Xbox One, PS5, XSX, PC
Release date: late 2020
Studio: Devolver Digital
Publisher: Mediatonic
youtube
Maybe the most significant Gamescom 2020 announcement has to do with this cult saga. BioWare showed us a behind-the-cameras of their current process. The acclaimed studio is developing the next Dragon Age game., although they haven’t shared many details.
That’s great news for fans of the RPG genre nonetheless. Let’s hope it brings the quality back to the Canadian studio after the disastrous Anthem title.
Quantum Error
Platform: PS4, PS5
Release date: TBA
Studio: TeamKill Media LLC
Publisher: TeamKill Media LLC
youtube
Quantum Error is an upcoming PS4/PS5 exclusive first-person horror title. However, we don’t know anything else about it, so we’re going to have to wait.
Doom Eternal: Ancient Gods
Platform: PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Windows PC, Google Stadia
Release date: November 20
Studio: iD Software
Publisher: Bethesda
youtube
Doom: Eternal – The Ancient Gods
The Doom Slayer defeated the hordes of Hell and freed Earth from the shackles of evil.
Now, Doom: Eternal is bringing its first expansion with ancient beings coming arising to the surface. We’re ready for more content on this 10/10 fps!
Destiny 2 – Beyond Light
We’re leaving the 5th DLC for the popular Destiny 2 for last. As it needs no further introduction, I’ll leave the trailer below:
youtube
Check our latest gaming news:
In Summary
I hope this short overview helps you decide whether or not to go for a next-gen console. Because I know the PS5 and the XSX are going to be expensive, I hope the current-gen trailers are exciting enough for you.
Besides, we’ll be sure to continue our Gamescom 2020 story with further articles!
