Something about how Jim became so accustomed to Starfleet parlance that it’s the only parlance he can speak at all. Something about how his relationship with his ship and his work as Captain extends to language as well, to the way he handles and expresses his emotions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Amok Time – Kirk is confronted with the fact Spock keeps a dangerous secret that, if not shared, might end up with his first officer killed
Tumblr media
The Apple – With the landing party marooned on a strange planet and the USS Enterprise being pulled ever closer to the ground, Kirk asks Scotty something beyond excellence.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Doomsday Machine – Commodore Matt Decker stands in the maw of a monster with a dead crew and stripped of any will to live. Kirk tries to bring his old friend to reason, but nothing else can be done for Decker as he looks death in the eye.
I understand how, especially in the third instance with Matt Decker, he might've seemed cold (your buddy is about to off himself, and you remind him the higher-ups spent too much money on his formation), but I see it more as Kirk trying to ground both himself and his friend (who is also a Commodore, might I remind you) than simply reducing Decker to his position.
It also accidentally reveals a lot about Jim (although reveal is not the best word, as that same thought has been explored in numerous episodes before), how much his sense of worth is tied to his job—to how well he can perform and excel at it.
But that's not all he's saying. In both instances (Amok Time and Doomsday Machine), Kirk puts himself in the Federation's place because he sees its recognition as more valuable, more "worth living for" than his own.
It's his way, the way of a man who knows no life other than that of servitude, of saying I care about you, and I don't want to lose you.
It's really tragic that it is not enough to save Decker. If both Matt and Jim share the belief (which appears more often than not in Starfleet overachievers) that your inner worth is tied to how well you can perform it, Matt is left face to face with the rather morbid fact that he failed severely and his whole crew is dead because of it.
To sin is human, yes, but if the Doomsday Machine is the Devil, as the Commodore himself put it, it truly is a shame Decker did not view himself as deserving of forgiveness

Starship is unironically a wonderful musical, I think it's one of StarKid's best and it's definitely one of my favourites, all the actors are so amazing, like, Joey Richter makes Bug such a wonderful naive protagonist, Brant Cox is a perfect best friend sidekick in Roach, Dylan Saunders is wonderful as the villain, Pincer, and doubles up as the wonderful, simple farm boy Tootsie Noodles, not to mention the rest of the Starship Rangers are all wonderful, my favourite characters! Denise Donovan plays the charming and ditzy love interest as February really well, Lauren Lopez shines as Taz, the tough tomboy, Meredith Stepien is obviously amazing as Mega-Girl, Brian Holden is so hilarious as the pathetic yet super evil Junior, Joe Walker is WONDERFUL as Commander Up, the former tough guy turned insecure sweetheart GOD Joe Walker is on another level, and even though Joe Moses and Julia Albain play smaller roles as Krayonder and Specs, I still find their performances super fun, as well as Jim Povolo, Jaime Lyn Beatty and Nick Lang as wonderful supporting cast with great voices and great range, and the songs are wonderful, Kick It Up A Notch is a genuinely AMAZING villain song, The Way I Do is one of my favourite love songs, I Wanna Be is a perfect introductory and I want song, and Status Quo, Get Back Up, and Life are bangers, not to mention the other songs that are also good! I could talk about this musical all day, the way that there's motifs from other songs present, like how there's a part of Life in Kick It Up A Notch, sung by Pincer, echoing when Bug previously sung the lament, and how lyrics from I Wanna Be come in as well as Pincer offers Bug the chance to be everything he's wanted to be, and there's even other smaller times we notice the motifs, like how in the introductory video Bug watches from the crashed starship, the instrumental of Get Back Up is playing, and the instrumental of Life is playing when the bugs first see the starship... God I'm obsessed with this musical you do not understand

It's impossible to write a TOS x Any other Series crossover [for me] without having to think about whose lens it's going to primarily be from because the vibe of TOS is so distinct and I think quite different from all series that follow it. The way the characters speak and are presented is so theatrical and of course steeped in the past that I find myself considering if this is, say, Janeway meeting Kirk (through a VOY perspective) or if I should write Janeway as she would appear if she stepped through a portal and was in TOS' universe.
#finally watched enough TOS that I feel I can write some fics v_v#I hope this makes sense#it feels almost like you have to decide whether or not you're going to translate the characters#not remove them of anything (which 'no female captains' TOS would have done) - I'm talking more of a...vibe?#It feels like TOS has a very particular 'pattern of speech' so to speak that other series don't share#EX: 'And now they're making me tremble but I'm no longer afraid...I am no longer....afraid.'#This 'pattern of speech' is also why shows like S_NW who purport to take place prior to TOS and yet are so jaggedly marvel-ously (he's righ#behind me isn't he???) modern feel incongruent. As if they take place in another universe. <- Among the million other reasons#I read a post that was like 'TOS is about the 60's' and it's true - TOS is so The 60's and that doesn't mean one can't innovate and build o#it (obviously hence star trek) but if I'm going back to WRITE in the TOS-verse it feels like I need to get in that headspace a bit and#engage with it in some manner. It's also why spirk is so compelling to me AS a yearning relationship (other than my love of yearning)#a man loves a man on a starship and it's the far future and it's the 60's and they're aliens and they can't admit that love aloud#for one or many of those reasons#It's such a PARTICULAR and INTERESTING blend of the past and future#we've solved racism (in the 60's way a white man might conceptualize this) but women can't be captains#and among the millions of alien planets there is nothing more constant than a brave man loving a beautiful woman

how did you come up with space soda!
I'm so glad u asked! so when I was writing my last Wattpad novel in 2016, I got stuck and decided to write a lighthearted novel with crazy hijinks instead. I told myself this is gonna be a short story I let myself make a bunch of mistakes on so I can get my first full story out of the way. it is now 2024 and that did not happen. I first drew the characters in 2019 (here) (red was conceptualised back then I just couldn't figure out how to put them in).
When I first started coming up with the actual story I was inspired by podcasts told in an epistolary format (bright sessions, wolf 359, welcome to Night Vale, the strange case of starship iris). I wanted everyone to be sending Dante a bunch of voicemails bc he never picks up the phone. So everything has been built around figuring out why he doesn't pick up and why they're trying so desperately to contact him!

I’ve been thinking a lot about masculinity and femininity. These things, we’ve assured ourselves, are not inherent to any gender, any sex. They are not exclusive, nor contradictory. This is true.
Also true: how are these things defined, if not, historically, through the expectations placed on the binary sexes and genders? Why are strength and chivalry and sharp suits and beards all grouped together under the nebulous category of “masculinity”?
That would lead, it seems, to the conclusion that we should uncategorize these things. No more masculine or feminine. Just a bunch of ungrouped traits and actions anyone can possess or embody.
And yet, for so many, these labels are helpful. Why do I get so much joy out of cutting my hair short and holding the door for people? How many people must find refuge in silk dresses to make up for the pain of those who have been forced into them? At what point do we stop keeping score? I don’t recite the entire history of violence as penance every morning that I get out a knife to spread butter on my toast.
I don’t have an answer. I welcome anyone’s thoughts, just please be respectful and kind.

>>I'm listening to fiction podcasts with 5 fans.<<
Sorry to bother you. I don't follow you, and you have no reason to know who I am. Someone I follow reblogged your post about getting through the WGA strike by consuming old or obscure media.
The line about podcasts with small fandoms jumped out at me. There are two podcasts of which I am one of those five fans.
The first is Girl in Space.
The second is The Strange Case of Starship Iris.
Both have some things in common, like a woman protagonist/primary narrator and a science fiction setting that involves space exploration as the background. Also both put the protagonist into opposition to an imperialist colonizing Earth government in some way.
Starship Iris has more overtly queer elements and themes.
Anytime I see something that might be an opportunity, I try to spread awareness of these two podcasts.
I did actually at one point try to listen to Starship Iris! At some point I'd like to go back to it, the first episode didn't hook me too well, and I think there was something about the audio editing or mixing or quality overall that I think I wasn't a fan of? But also shit was going on in my life, I'm not surprised I had a hard time getting it to stick. In turn, I will recommend to you my podcast I was indirectly mentioning in the post: Wolf 359! It's another really good science fiction podcast, it starts off as a comedy and then things get worse. Plot wise, it does become this really interesting look at the experiences of different people living in a capitalist society, and does a great job with thinking about alternate states of "being" we might not immediately recognize as in line with our ideas of life. Also there's classical music, and a shit ton of pop culture references.
Be on your merry way, thank you for reminding me about Starship Iris! :D
