alternate stargirl ending—pat really does die when he’s buried alive, and how that’s revealed to courtney?
(again, massive s3 spoilers for Stargirl)
Somewhere, distantly, Courtney thought that this had all started because of a bad photo in a locket. Justice for a grainy memory of a father who hadn’t even been real, not really. It had grown, quickly. It had been about Joey. It had been about Henry. It had been about saving the town, the country, the world. But this was what it was always going to be. The JSA--new, and shaken, but there-- versus Icicle.
Cameron was a surprise. Courtney’s heart clenched. Starman stood behind him, behind Icicle, the Staff in hand. It still glowed, but dimmer.
Icicle gave some carefully worded speech--about neutral ground, and his family. About setting aside differences. Like this whole thing had been some big misunderstanding over something as small as which was better, chicken or dumplings, and not decades worth of senseless murder. Courtney clenched her fists, wishing She had the staff, wishing she could blast him right in his smug, unrepentant face.  Did he think that just because she'd seen how hard the Crocks and Cindy had worked to be heroes that she'd just believe him when he lied?
"Where's Pat?" she asked.
Starman spoke. "Pat's gone, Courtney."
She didn't drop. She wanted to.
"Gone?" she repeated. Hoping she'd just misheard.
"He came to see me, after Jordan and I settled things," he said, his tone unaffected. "I apologized and tried to convince him to join forces with both of us. He refused. He went into the woods alone, looking for the Ultra-Humanite."
Beth gave a tiny shake of her head. Courtney wasn't sure it was bright enough for anyone else to see it, but she knew Beth, by now.  The goggles had told her that Starman was lying.
"--who killed him," Starman finished.
Courtney felt Beth freeze beside her, heard the tiny gasp.  She couldn't believe it. But Beth did. Rick took one step left, a subtle raise of his shoulder, Yolanda mirroring it.
Whatever you say goes, they telegraphed. We've got your back.
"If we're going to get any justice for Pat, we need to team up, Courtney," Jordan said, that same oilslick tone in his voice.
Justice.  Courtney felt her blood run hot. Across the packed dirt, she saw the Staff flicker.
"Justice?" she repeated. "You--you're talking to me about Justice?"
"Courtney," Cameron said. "I'm so sorry." He took a step forward, and Jordan put out a hand to stop him.
"You did this," Courtney said, eyes still fixed on Jordan. "You murdered the Crocks. You murdered Joey. What did you do to Pat?"
"I didn't do anything," Jordan said. "Courtney, I've already--"
"It was Starman." Beth's tiny whisper broke through the blood pounding in Courtney's ears. "Dirt under his nails. Bu--burst calluses from--a shovel--" her voice cracked.
Courtney stared. "You killed Pat," she said, cutting off Icicle. "You said you were his friend. and you killed him. You've been with Icicle this whole time."
Neither of them denied it.  Courtney held out her hand, even as she watched Cameron take a step back.
"Dad? You said--"
"I said what I had to," Icicle said. "I did what I had to. We both did. It was for You. It was for a better world."
"Liar!" Courtney burst out.
The Staff, in Starman's--in the Thing pretending, because Starman would never--hand, exploded with light as Courtney held out one hand, singular in purpose.
It tore away from him, streaking to her hand like the meteor that had once ended the world. The warmth of it fit perfectly in her grip, two flames becoming a bonfire.
If Icicle and his parents, if the Killer, realized what was about to happen, they didn't have time to do anything about it. Courtney screamed. The October air crystalized, a perfect moment where the dark divided in two, split by golden fire.
Icicle's feeble wall of ice didn't even melt, sizzling into the air with the intensity of the Staff. Courtney could feel its grief as keenly as her own, all of the rage, all of the hurt pouring through her and it. The power that channeled through her matched her scream, held only barely back by three hands on her shoulders.
Pat wouldn't want her to kill.  Pat wouldn't want them to kill. She wanted to kill, wanted to erase any trace of them. The fire fought her slim control. She bore it back, held it back, tears blinding her as much as the light When the gout of yellow light finally broke, along with her voice, she did not drop, supported by Rick, Yolanda, Beth. Cameron.
This had started as justice for an unknown father. It ended with justice for her Dad.

Honestly, I'm feeling a lot of things right now. I was preparing myself for this once I knew WB is cancelling current DC works left and right.
But, it hurts because these are my comfort shows.
Last time, I watched a DC show it was Arrow and stopped watching after S2.
It was in the evening five years ago, when I discovered Titans in YouTube. I started watching only to confirm whether it was a found family trope after catching a glimpse and immediately fell in love with it.
Titans is the reason, I came back to DC universe and was introduced to Doom Patrol and Stargirl. Doom Patrol just blew my mind and Stargirl was so good.
Seriously, when it comes to Titans I just wish we had the writing staff of S4 way back from S2. S2 was such a wasted opportunity. They gave unnecessary time to others instead putting their focus on Kory and Gar. S3 was a little better but not what I hoped. There could have been so many developments till now. Titans felt Titans only in S4 & S1. Instead of giving too much time on the former Titans or the Gotham storyline, they could have developed the core team and avoid stretching out Dick issues EVERY DAMN SEASON.
Kory & Gar deserved better. Anna and Ryan deserved better.
When it comes to Stargirl, it ended so soon. I still haven't watched the last 4 eps because I don't want to say goodbye.
Doom Patrol always blew my mind. I'm hurt, these two shows' writing was good. They didn't deserve this.
My hope was renewed when I learnt that there was a chance there will be S5 of Titans. That we can get another better season like the current one.
But, it's not fair that we had to satisfy ourselves with whatever little we got when we could have gotten so much more if they showed the same amount of passion early on, which they are showing this season.

how would hournite have gone on with no development with s3 confirming they get married later? That would be the biggest drama. If stargirl got renewed they would have to deliver. They’d HAVE give us fans something. Right? (Right!? 😰)
The marriage reveal in the finale was always something I think was only going to happen if it was the SERIES finale. If it were just a season, I don’t think there would have been anything and Hournite fans could rightfully be mad waiting for season four.
I think part of the issue with Hournite is a) Courtney was always going to need to have her relationship(s) prioritized and b) Geoff Johns only wanted to put them together towards the end, since he stated that he doesn’t like when couples are together and stay together with no drama (which was kind of elaborated when Steve Harper came on The Squadcast— a shameless self-plug, but also kind of a tbt lmfao). So, they might have written slightly more flirtatious dialogue, but I don’t think any romance would have been in the cards until season 5 (but it would have been smooth sailing* from there on out).
*Smooth sailing from a couple standpoint. From the fandom standpoint I think people would vent their frustrations every week until Hournite held hands in a park together or something lmfao

I trust your opinion on The Flash most of all, so how did you feel about Cecile’s character trajectory? I was not a fan of what they did with her character, but I also thought the level of hate she ended up getting seemed unjustified? Everything from the way she was dealing with her grief over Joe’s death during Armageddon to her getting a super suit, she was torn apart for. I never understood the hyper-focus on her in later seasons, but I also think the hate the she gets is insane.
Thank you for asking me this. I'm actually excited to write another Flash essay-response. I missed this.
In short, yes, I found Cecile's meta arc frustrating and confusing but I do not hate her character nor do I have an issue with a middle-aged hero existing.
The problem and fandom obsession with Cecile is multifaceted. She was a doomed character of inherently flawed writing, but her fall from grace through fandom's eyes is nothing short of misogynoir.
The Seal ??? you're going to compare a black woman to an animal for your satisfaction? In a world where black women are constantly described as animalistic and primitive? There is only one character who gets just as much ceaseless vitriolic hate as Cecile and that is Iris.
First and foremost, I would like to raise that where I have seen the absolute worst treatment towards Cecile and Dani N is Twitter--I left Flash Twitter 5 years ago (though I was never truly fully on it) because of the sheer racial animosity I felt on there as a biracial person. I've read so much disgusting racialized hate towards Dani N (including from fans of Candice and Iris, no less and it saddens me to see the community disillusioned into believing that to be protective of a black lead means that any other black character is an enemy destined to be pitted against her) especially in terms of questioning or diminishing her blackness. It was disgusting and it still is.
The problem with empaths/telepaths/mind control powers is that they become limitless very quickly when no boundaries are set in place. Her powers were confusing and used for exceedingly expository purposes that felt like a cop-out the longer it went on. I cannot tell you how many times I have lost my understanding of the "science" plots in the last 3 and a half seasons and that is a good chunk of Cecile's meta problems.
Season 4 worked because Cecile's powers were bounded to her pregnancy. She served as an adequate neutralizer against The Thinker which was needed at the time. Her powers should've had an expiry date and ended when Jenna was born. Or, more accurately, her powers should've been Jenna's. Cecile's powers manifested upon Jenna's conception, it would've served that the source of her abilities came from the baby, not herself. Without going into too much detail, this could've nicely allowed Nora (and Bart) to have family closer in age to be a part of their eventual Flash Fam team roster. Of course, it didn't pan out that way. They needed to give Cecile's powers concrete limits without evolving or "levelling up" in a way that overshadows the titular character. This is a given! They gave her everything and it was ridiculous, empath/telepathy/mind possession/emotive projection - like yeah. It's too much. It's annoying and it's too much!
In Stargirl, the Brainwaves were eliminated early on in the series because they were OP. Those writers were cognizant of that fact and woven in a compelling story that served to ensure that the empath/mind control characters were set in their place without overthrowing the entire capacity of the main heroes of the show.
Cecile made a great lawyer, but she failed spectacularly at all of her crucial lawyering post s3.
And it's a writing problem. Lazy effort went into how to include any in-universe plausible legal processes in this show. S4 Barry trial and S7 KF trial are glaringly obvious examples like this. But we should have known that the majority of the responsibility of these flaws lays in the hands of the writers inability to do justice to ANY of their female characters, which goes exponentially for the black women. So of course I am not surprised that they blundered with Cecile as she was promoted from supporting to main cast.
Nora Allen? Murdered (x150). Tess Morgan, the founder of STAR LABS name? Murdered & never revived unlike the 500 Wells. Linda? Disappeared. Francine? Dead. Tina McGee? Disappeared. Jesse? Erased from existence. Caitlin/Killer Frost/Crystal Frost/Khione? Murdered three times, reduced to repetitive abusive love interest storylines and retconned storylines into oblivion. Cynthia? Murdered. Kamilla? Treated like dirt & disappeared. Marlize? Same. Sue? Disappeared. Joanie? Disappeared. Jenna? Disappeared. Carla and Cisco's mom? Both also awful. Meena? Disappeared. Alexa? Who? Esperanza? Murdered. Allegra was okay ish, and I know there are more (Ralph's mom, Becky Sharpe, but really, I think I've made my point...) but that literally leaves us with Cecile, Iris, and Nora I/II as our black female leads who had to face the brunt of the worst writing (and most hatred when it was their "time" to shine).
This show cannot execute motherhood properly. It refuses to. See: Iris s5 and literally every mother to ever mother on this show except for Nora Allen...
But also, both the creators and the fandom seem to hold this ideology that motherhood is the end all and be all of life and value? Show runners have said again and again that The Flash would have to end when Iris is pregnant because that's when it's "over" ??? I did not understand that when it was first said and I still do not understand that. This concept of femininity directly tied to the merit associated to motherhood is a good chunk of the reasoning behind people claim to hate Cecile--Because she is a superhero who has sacrificed as a single mother and now struggles with balancing her desires vs her obligations? Cecile, who has been written as a black woman who canonically struggled to society's standards of excellence causing her stress and anguish to the point of mental break? I appreciated the s7 psycho-pirate and mental health struggles she had - so I wasn't horrified to see that she struggled with grief in s8's plot. The type of mental health issues that these storylines explored is a real lived experience that many women have, and I find it fascinating that there is this double standard here. This is a superhero show. Like...we're hating her for, what, exactly? For being a superhero and wanting to help people?
I mourn Cecile's "downfall" because she was a great addition to the West family as a supportive cast. I mourn the fact that Iris and Cecile never really had a great relationship despite both being mains. I mourn the fact that she was given more weight than Iris in the last season instead of supporting and encouraging her. Because that's why her role was elevated in the last season, to replace Joe in his absence as Iris' number #1 cheerleader. But it never properly translated that way and that is a shame. That said, her role in the show shouldn't have been strictly reduced to "Mother" and "Grandmother" --That isn't fair. I adored the way she spoke to Nora I in s5 but she did deserve to go on adventures the same way Joe has since s1. Why shouldn't she? I think this is what Eric Wallace was trying to achieve and I applaud him for the idea but have to criticize the execution. The show has failed her in her area of expertise of being a successful lawyer, mocked her by putting her through a pregnancy for a child they couldn't commit to, and then kicked her character into the lion's den for death by turning her into an OP'd meta at the mercy of a prejudiced fanbase already notoriously well-known for mistreating black talent. This could've easily been avoided with more clever solutions that positions Barry--the creator of Gideon--as the focus and true mastermind behind Team Flash plans.

Hey have you ever seen the show Stargirl? I've only seen the first 2 seasons (planning to do a full rewatch including S3) but it has really good whump throughout. S2 especially as the main villain could make characters' worst fears real (a favorite whump trope of mine). Highly recommend!
I have not seen Stargirl but my sister watched has and she's told me about some of the plotlines and stuff. It looks cool. Been on my to watch list for ages. Oooh make their worst fears real!?!!!!!! That sounds amazing!!! I'm very into that. Thanks for the rec

Okay, sorry, I know this is really super random! But as I was making the yolanda gifset yesterday with the one where Yolanda shows up at Courtney's doorstep because her mom kicked her out, Mike's silent reaction is really quite fascinating. He is pretty stunned and it's almost as if he's just never quite considered that Yolanda's situation was so dire. And I just think that even though Mike's story was really sloppily done in season three, this was a really good moment for him to reconsider the gripes he has with Pat in a new perspective. Mike never had to worry about messing up so bad that Pat would kick him out. I think it's really understated.

For fic requests, sequel to YJ Artemis meets Stargirl Artemis.
sequel to this one from last year set post s3 but before the Flash forwards at the end
Artemis jogged down the street, her form excellent. She’d drilled it enough, on the field, on the track, on the sidewalks that were always in good repair. This place was no Blue Valley. She needed to find the other version of her before she missed a step on missing pavement. This world felt awful and wrong, but lately so had her own. It wasn’t that hard, all things considered.  She was never going to poke fun at Chapel’s goggles again, not when they could track interdimensional rifts WHILE tracking abnormal weather patterns and any number of other things.  She felt, rather than heard or saw, someone approaching from behind and spun on a heel, lacrosse stick sliding through her grip easily. It wasn’t as good as a hockey stick, but it was hers.
“Hey, I know you,” the person who’d come up behind her said, taking a step back, one hand raised in the universal ‘ I would really prefer to keep my teeth in my mouth where they belong if that’s good with you’ gesture. She scowled, flipping her ponytail. “Maybe,” she said. She didn’t recognize this guy. Red hair, really red, not like Henry King’s had been. Tall.  She weighed facts in her mind the way she calculated plays and player stats. She could take him, probably, especially if she went for his eyes, or knocked him back two steps where the sidewalk was falling apart.  “Depends who you are.” She’d drilled that, too. Always be ready for the fight. Always see the fight before it starts.  Her parents had taught her that. He frowned. She matched him.  She couldn’t turn back to the run, he’d get in a strike, but attacking him first would give him far too much information about her skills before she had his measure. Her mother had taught her that. Her mother. If you go looking for a fight, be sure you can win it.  She had, and her mother hadn’t.  “We have a problem?” she asked, flexing fingers white around her hockey stick. He sighed, the kind of big audible sigh teachers and coaching assistants made when they wanted to let you know they were Frustrated but were Not Saying Anything Because They Didn’t Want to Get Fired, So Shape Up. It was all acting. Whiners.  “If you’re Artemis, I think we do. You better come with me.” She didn’t bother answering, just gripped the stick.  Down the block, a storefront opened. “ Will? Where--oh, shit.” The blond version of her, twenty-something and wearing eyeliner, jogged up. Artemis felt only a tiny bit of pride when she noticed the woman’s pace neatly avoided the problematic portion of sidewalk. “Me,” Artemis greeted. “I need a favor.” “Anything.” Older!Artemis said. “Do you need a place to stay? What happened? Did.. dad…?” Without warning the rock  lifted from Artemis's lungs where it had sat for weeks, lodging in her throat. “Yeah,” she said, managing to keep the tears down, buried. “Oh, honey. You can stay. We’ll figure something out. Here, uh…” she fluttered, anxious.  “It’ll be ok. We’ll stop him.” “Stop who?” The guy--Will, apparently-- asked. “Sportsmaster,” Blond-temis said, as Artemis croaked “Icicle.” The two stared at each other. Rage ate away at the stone. How dare the other her think her dad had done anything to make her upset, or hurt, or unsafe? How dare she think it was her dad’s fault? Her dad had only ever done one thing to make her cry, and it was die. “ What does Icicle have to do with anything?” “He killed my parents.” It took everything in her to say the words without letting them become a part of her. “Oh.Oh my g--” older Artemis whispered. “You... you really meant it. When you said they.. Reformed.” “Of course I did! They were heroes! And he killed them for it. So I have to kill him. No one else will.” Artemis swallowed hard. “He can’t get away with it. I can’t let him.” “Ohkaaaay, maybe we should go find Jade and sit inside somewhere that is not a public street to have this conversation about murder?” Will suggested. Neither Artemis paid him any mind. “I can’t let you do that,” Blond-temis said, her voice trying for gentleness. It sounded hollow. “That’s not what you should be doing with your life. You don’t have to be a killer, just because they were.” “That’s not why I have to do this.” Artemis insisted. “I have to kill him because they’re not. If you won’t help me, I’ll find someone who will.” Without caring if they saw a weakness in her back, she turned and fled.
