So mermaids are fish, straight up. Anything non-fish is not a mermaid. I do take non-fish requests! But they will either be magical creatures that are not mermaids, or they will just not be canon to my world.

There are many aquatic creatures that are not fish, and are in fact not even in the phylum chordata. "Phylum" is the first category of biology in taxonomy, which is the study of classifications.

The kingdoms of life are: animals, plants, and fungus. Within the animal kingdom, the next step of sorting is phyla. Chordata includes vertebrates (and other animals that have a spinal cord but no bones) and it does not include jellyfish, crustaceans, octopus, and lots of other things. Interestingly, it is believed that chordata and echinoderma share a common ancestor, but they are still different phyla.

Mermaids arose from a ray finned fish, in the clade Actinopterygii. They speciated from there to become the dominant life form of the oceans. Mermaids have a process that allows groups to take on a form that is analogous to a mundane fish. If that fish evolved to eat algae, the mermaid takes on those traits while still able to eat meat. This kinship is not limited to other ray-finned fish, but encompasses many vertebrates that are commonly called "fish." This includes sharks and jawless fish like hagfish. It can include lobe-finned fish like coelacanth, but does not include tetrapods. Tetrapod creatures that resemble mermaids may be centaurs. Centaurs have a completely different origin than mermaids.

Mermaids do not have kin in other phyla. If an invertebrate resembles a human, it is through another evolutionary path than "fish that mimics humans to eat them"

Many phylums have branches that superficially resemble humans despite being completely unrelated to us and each other. This phenomenon is known as anthropisation (not anthropization, which is humans changing landscapes). But don't go thinking humans are special. The same thing happens with horses.

In which the Babbit rambles on...

I said I'd do a background post for the Mer AU I wrote for Liu Sang. But first, here's why there has to be a Mer Liu Sang AU from me.

Sopping wet Liu Chang requires a something, right?

I mean, look at this man. LOOK at him!

The idea for the fic partly came from discussions I've seen about how mer folk might change gender to make sure there's enough of both genders in a group. I took it in a slightly different direction but the result was Mer-ry Mer-ry Month of May.

And, because I went short deliberately, there's a lot of background info that I'm now going to dump. (After the cut because how I do go on.) Suggest you read the story before reading this because spoilers!

Still with me? Right.

First off, the Mer-verse is actually more a spiritual creature universe, so there's probably more than just mer and sirens and other beasties (oh my) in there. But we'll focus on the water breathers for now.

Mer and Siren, as Liu Sang states in the story, are kin but not close kin anymore. There's a third - as yet unnamed species of water spirit - that's closer to the original but they're mostly reclusive and seldom bother with human forms. Mer and Siren both do so.

Mer are the more outgoing of the water spirits. They try to make contact with humans and while they can't interbreed, they enjoy a good fuck as much as the next fish. They're also closer to fish in appearance and lifestyles, having tribes who mimic different species of fish. They're more likely to be found hanging around fishermen and the like and making friends.

Siren tend to be loners and don't need others to breed. Their fish forms are more esoteric and vary by siren; not mimicking specific species at all. They're closer to spiritual energies and between that and their being a bit more violent and stabbity (not to mention given to eating what annoys them) those who know about them know to be careful.

Both mer and siren regenerate, rather like starfish, so they take a lot of killing to stop.

Liu Sang and his twin were stolen from their parent (yes, Yan Sanxing's their parent. He's also Er Yue Hong's 'shark'.) at an early age. Liu Sang managed to escape with help from the Xie family and was sent to train with his soundmapping teacher. Wang Can remained with the Wang and trained as a soldier, until he was captured by Wang Pangzi and the Blue Robed Master and convinced to help Wu Xie's cause. Wang Can is currently living in Tibet with the Blue Robed Master and working as a truck guard.

Discerning readers may have noted that Xiazi is probably Not Entirely Human. Figure he gives gr8 hugs because I do love me cephalapoda.

I haven't thought of much else yet, but I'll update this if I do.

-He had jumped off into the sea when his family had set the boats on fire. He tried to scream for them to stop and tell them he was there, but they did not hear him. He had nowhere else to run, so he had to jump through the fire into the water. 

-He suffered terrible burns, which burned and stung harder than any blade. The pain was deep and agonizing, making it nearly impossible for him to stay on the surface, and when he tried to swim toward the land, the current suddenly swept him away. 

-He panicked when the land became more distant from his reach, and he didn’t have any energy to swim. 

-He was on the brink of drowning. He kicked his feet as hard as possible, but it only fastened his energy loss, and he was submerged under the water. 

-He thought it was the end for him as his lungs began to fill with water, making him feel even further pain before they became numb. 

-His mind nearly fell into darkness till he heard something heavy, and something suddenly yanked him out of the water. 

-He was thrown against a stern deck, and water gushed out of his lungs, making him cough and slough over the floor. His lungs gasped for air, and his mind awakened back to reality. 

-He was frightened when he saw his rescues. They were elves yet looked vicious and wore clothing no ordinary sailors wore during their journeys. It didn’t help when they sneered down on him, calling him a burned-wet rat and an orc. 

-He took a quick look around the ship, which was ten times bigger than the ships his family used to sail across the sea. The mast stood tall, carrying haunting black sails, and there were round metal constructs that looked like weapons of sorts. 

-His attention was brought back when his rescuers pushed him in a sneering tone. Amrod thought about all the stories he heard as an elfling about the sea and knew from them that he was dealing with pirates– real pirates. 

-They demanded to know if he was part of the burning of the swan ships since he possessed red hair. He didn’t dare the answer till they forcefully picked him up and took him to what seemed to be a captain’s cabin. 

-They pushed through the door, and there you sat, feeding a strange four feet creature with a long tail that screeched at him. 

-Your crew members talked about their suspicions about him to you, and you calmly listened and looked at him. 

-Amrod tried to hold up a calm face, but even though you were an elf, there was something strange and eerie about you. 

-You spoke softly to him, asking if he was hurting and if he would like to have a warm change of clothes. Amrod didn’t know how to answer– he felt reluctant even though the burns on his body were hurting. 

-You softly smiled at him and asked your crew members to bandage him up and give him dry clothes so you could have a proper discussion later. 

-Amrod felt hesitant, but when his wounds were treated and he got out of wet clothes and given time to rest, his body shut down from exhaustion. And he was glad just to have some rest even though he was on a pirate ship. 

-He felt odd the next time he woke up. The crew still treated him suspiciously, and when you invited him for dinner, he didn’t dare to refuse, so he accepted. 

-You spoke softly to him, letting him eat first. You apologized for the rough treatment and explained about the swan ships. 

-It was a prominent rule in the sea to never attack swan ships for they were considered neutral and were your kin. Attacking and burning swan-resembling ships will mark an orc or an enemy, so you stayed around when you saw several swan ships burning at the shore. 

-You discovered the heinous act was done by a group of elves, so you and your crew had been agitated by the news. 

-You asked if he knew about it, and Amrod hesitated, knowing what might come if he told you what he and his family had done to get the swan ships. He didn’t know why they were burned, but having heard such a sacred rule. He knew he wasn’t in a good situation. 

-Amrod decided to play ignorant, but he tensed when he saw you look at him strangely like you knew he wasn’t telling the truth. Your monkey only hissed at him. 

-You then started telling him a little story about you and your crew. How you sailed around the sea and resisted the orcs from the shore. How you found a treasure and how there was a curse of death and lies. 

-You told him how lying was a bad habit and how many end up as the victim of their own consequences before you offed him an apple. 

-Amrod acted out of his brashness, taking a knife and striking you in the chest. You staggered back, taking out the knife, looking unaffected. Amrod paled at his mistake and how you didn’t seem to bleed. 

-” I’m curious. After killing me, what was it that you planned on doing next?” You held the bloodied knife, looking at him with a sinister grin. 

-Amrod tried to leave, but when he got outside. He was faced with the crew, who looked like walking corpses, screeching at him and doing their chores under Tillion’s light. 

-He was struck with terror. He had never seen anything so horrifying in his life. He tried to hide, but even your monkey was a walking corpse, screeching out of his hiding place. 

-You grabbed him and made him look at your crew. 

-You explained to him the curse that made you undead and how the moonlight showed your true form before making him look at you. 

-You told him how long you have been unable to quench your thirst and starved yourself, unable to die. You told him how felt nothing and showed your arm, which turned dead and rotten under the moon. Amrod backed away in fright. 

-” You better start believing in ghost stories, little elf,” You said, showing your true form, which was a rotten skeleton. “You’re in one!” You said. 

-Amrod watched in horror when you opened a bottle of rum, drinking it which flowed through your bones and withered clothes. 

-Amrod ran inside, and you mashed the bottle while closing the door, laughing with your crew. Amrod was hiding in a corner, holding his knees and hoping the nightmare would end soon.

Excerpt of a Book - "On the Subject of Failed Ascensions"

Ascension is not as easy as one might think from the above. Whether it is misuse of items, improper invocation, or by a strand of bad luck, a failure to ascend can occur.

Failed ascensions are never the same. Some are instantaneous and immediately corrupts and poisons the sanity and will of the afflicted. Others are not immediately changed, but do begin their cruel metamorphosis, having to live through the pain of the physical and the slipping of their mind.

No two failures are the same but depending on the deity invoked to help power the ascension, or area of power sought, the failure can have similar aspects. The following is a known list that gives examples of this.

SkullFaces, Reapers - Death - Loss of flesh, bone growth, the ones with more success gain a death touch, cloak fused with body ____

Ghouls, Living Coffins - Life - Paled skin, forced to retain fragments of humanity, increased durability ____

Wraith, living creep, Shadow tags - Darkness - Aversion to light, limited mobility, death by purity ~~~~~~

Corrupted wolves, Werewolf lords, tree people, and more - Nature - Territorial, more prone to feralness, mostly animal/rare to have human qualities left, when dies becomes grass or other nature ~~~~~~

Corrupted merfolk, Starfish fragments, Jellyfish - Ocean - rare ability to breathe outside of water permanently, animalistic, always covered in scales ~~~~~~

Cordyceps, Spore Factories - Mushrooms - loss of brain control, ability to spread corruption ~~~~~~~

Flesh lumps, fleshlings, the fused - Flesh - Abominations, mish-mash of flesh and organs, often has no mouth yet screams ~~~~~~

Fortune-tellers, Great Sages, the predictor - Fate - Lack of eyes, telepathy, violent and uncontrollable twitches, often take a form resembling a tarot card. ~~~~~~~~

Fox-kin, Three tailed kits, shapeshifters - Trickery - Talks in lying rhymes, fox tails, inability to speak negatively about the kitsune deity, uncontrollable laughter ~~~~~~~~

The crow swarm, the lightning striker, "Mede" - The Sky - Never-ending feathers, often stuck between human and bird, loss of vocal cords. _______

Clockbearers, cog sentinels, the minuteman's guards - Time - Loss of any emotion, loyal to a master, constant loud clanking noises ______

Puppeteers, Melts, Ladies in Red, Sneaking Statues - Arts - Loss of bodily autonomy, fear of being looked at, aggressive if touched, full retention of fate ______

Fused Gunners, The gladiator, Eyesniper - War - Heightened aggression, loss of distinguishing features, attacks indiscriminately, always clothed in some form of battle attire (fused to skin) ______

The Leprosed, Crow Maulers, Spewers, Bloodied Medic - Pestilence/Sickness - Rots immediately after death, often packed with contamination, crow and raven aesthetics. Either crows or coughs, all have crow tail feathers. ______

The inhabited, Atlas Moths, The Alien - Insects - Dies almost instantly to fire, hive mind, often feel compelled by stronger powers, obsessed with turning locale into a hive. Various bug features are seen, from wings to proboscis to stingers _______

Book Stack, Learners, The Professor - Knowledge - Growth of brain matter, telepathy, often the exterior changes to leather and paper, horrible at fighting ~~~~~~~~

Moon Dust, the Forgotten, "Laika" - Moon - Often borrows from other domains, has no gravity, is aggressive, and is rarely seen (heightened chance of dying immediately after failing. ~~~~~~~

Ifrit, Bound-Demon, "The Influencer" - Evil - Often takes a form enticing to an opponent, banished by holy objects and faith, horns and spaded tails, grotesque claws, almost always has a sneer, loss of all prior memories. ~~~~~~~

Bodybuilders, "The Coach", Barbelled - Strength - Aggressive, avoid at all costs!, heightened senses, slow speed, abnormal growth of muscular tissue, no known weaknesses ~~~~~~~

Flame Atronarch, Phoenixes, Coal Sprites - Fire - Constantly aflame, will not chase prey that enters the water, afraid of caves. ~~~~~~

Wisps, the Fallen, Tethered Corpses - Spirits - Incorporeal, tangible enough to harm but most attacks fail, usually melancholy, often begs for opponents to kill it. ~~~~~

Three-winged angels, "The Blind One" - Purity - Flaming wings, often has eyes covered up, senses one based on how corrupt they are, will focus on other failed ascensions before a human. ~~~~~~~

Golems, Sand Shifters, Geode Clusters - Earth - Slow movers, often coated in sand, retention of humanity, shattered if stressed ~~~~~

"Carolers", The festivites, The grapevines - Drunken festivities - Smells of grapes, drunk, easily irritable, disfigured appearance, almost never seen without a mask. !!!!!!

The Bloated, the Starved, Foodies - Sustenance - Disfigured bodies, only has brain functions relating to food or drink. In the case of "Foodies", their body becomes a foodstuff

Not included in the list above are domains that have too few entities to report, and many of the niche and very minor domains (such as horses)

It should be noted that the domains of Unity and Family, do not have any failed ascensions, as all who invoke their domain will die instantly if used to ascend. It has yet to be confirmed as to why or how.

Even as the cradle is torn apart, its oldest child raises a new kind of people onto the world stage. In the depths of the ocean, the Queen of Fortunes finds a tricksy species of octopus, and enhances their natural abilities. The Framelings are primarily aquatic shapeshifters and mimics, short-lived and swift to action.

Framelings mostly live in small semi-nomadic communities tending to schools of fish or marine mammals. Their unparalleled mimicking abilities make it easy for them to fit in with their herds, and let them gently guide, protect, and cull them. In terms of deadweight, they are about the mass of a large human, but capable of stretching or shrinking body parts to absurd degrees and can play anything from a starfish to a whale. They are also capable of imitating sounds, and may communicate long-distance via song.

Though the Framelings are generally capable of communicating with one another, they are spread widely across the oceans and far from a united people. Communities are rarely double-digit individuals, but they tend to be a part of larger tribal confoederations, united by common heritage, way of life, social norms, and physical proximity.

The eight main tribal groups are:

Merrowings - Inhabiting the Inner Sea, the Merrowings are the Framelings most commonly in contact with humans, shadowing their ships from below, or joining them on shore in disguise. Sometimes they even approach them openly, in trade or war (though rarely, as both of those things are still better done in disguise).

Lotings - Living off the south coast of Akhon, the Lotings enjoy a relative isolation, and have perfected the cultivation of kelp and grow it in vast fields. They are also the Framelings spending the most time on shore, and thus the only ones with full mastery of fire.

Coralings- The Coralings have made their home in Tokhtamysh's reefs in the Bay of Hunger. Shaped by their dangerous envirnoment, they are known to be more vicious and ruthless than most.

Selkings - The most northern of Frameling tribes, the Selkings are neighbours with the Thuva, and often compete with them for fish. Though capable of mimicking the sea-trolls, their isolationist nature and tremendous life-span makes true understanding difficult.

Ledolphings - Roaming the open ocean south of the Green-Lands, the Ledolphings herd various cetaceans, and generally consider themselves the most traditionalist, originalist Framelings, and the see the others as being too preoccupied with on-shore business.

Arnsgulfings - Taking their name from their mythical ancestor and religious leader, and the vast gulf on the southern side of Tullus, the Arnsgulfings consider their home sacred, and forbid outsiders, both from sea and from land, from entering its waters.

Melusings - Melusings are unique among Frameling for living in freshwater, inhabiting the great Cardinal River. Since there are no real physiological differences between them and their kin, they can only accomplish this by dietary supplements. They are also famous (and ridiculed) for keeping waterfowl, more than true marine animals.

Nicorsings - The Nicorsings occupy the sea between Akhon and Kuiri. Like the Merrowings they enjoy relatively frequent contact with Humans, though the Humans enjoy it less. Nicorsings are known to be thieves and tricksters, and sometimes lure Humans to a watery grave by imitating their songs or screams.
