@dasfeministmermaid - apologies, I realise you asked this absolutely ages ago (last year now, even!), but re: my tags on this post, I was mostly just referring to the fact that at the time Disney took over SW, the popularity of GoT was largely responsible for the trend towards dark and 'gritty realism' in fantasy media in general. I don't claim there was necessarily direct influence on the SW sequels, but if we are talking cultural zeitgeists, then aside from perhaps Marvel, GoT was certainly one of the most prominent at the time. And I can't help but see something of that in TFA’s whole 'we’re going to portray the Original Trio as colossal failures and morally grey at best, instead of the unquestionably heroic figures created by George Lucas'. Not to mention the bizarro depiction of the Skywalker family as some kind of 'cursed' dynasty that was doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past, despite the fact that such a cynical interpretation flew in the face of every story element, theme, and character arc established in the original saga. The only Skywalker who was under a so-called 'curse' was Anakin (and by that I simply mean his enslavement by Sidious), and he freed himself (and his family, and the whole galaxy) from that once and for all when he destroyed the Sith and saved his son at the end of Return of the Jedi. In this light, the course of events that was supposed to have taken place off-screen in-between RotJ and TFA made no sense within the actual context established by the Lucas saga. The milieu of the characters in the PT and OT is purposefully constructed to be different from one another, hence why the Skywalker twins are raised without any direct Jedi influence, in loving families, are allowed to have childhoods, allowed to love, etc., unlike their parents who were trapped within an increasingly corrupt system that actively prevented them from living together as a couple or family. The very context in which Luke and Leia’s story takes place is a big part of what allows them to definitively break the cycle.
Of course, it can be argued that simply by continuing the story beyond RotJ at all, the Disney-sequels were always going to destroy the meaning of the Lucas saga. But the character assassination of the Original Trio in TFA was a conscious and completely unnecessary decision—after all, a sequel could have potentially been made without destroying Han, Luke, and Leia’s entire characterisations and relationships. The fact that Disney also (lazily and pointlessly) decided to construct a new 'Dark Times' as the setting is even more telling, since there was absolutely no need to do so, and all it did was add to the impression that these characters were nihilistically doomed to constantly repeat the same past mistakes and tragedies, when nothing could be further from the truth that Lucas' story established. I have gone into great detail about this many times over the years since TFA was released, so I won't dwell on it here, but the Original Trio absolutely DOES 'break the cycle', and suggesting otherwise destroys not only the meaning of the OT, but also that of the Prequels (basically erasing Anakin's entire story). The unequivocally happy ending of RotJ is likewise what 'redeems' the tragedy of the Prequels, and without that, the meaning of the entire Lucas saga is totally undermined and destroyed. I refuse to accept that, hence why I've always rejected the Disney-sequels and will never accept them as legitimate canon.
In brief, Star Wars was never meant to be 'gritty', nor is the outcome of its storyline supposed to be 'realistic'. Lucas' saga begins with a tragedy (the Prequels) that is subsequently redeemed by a fairytale (Original Trilogy), and which, when taken together, forms a created-myth, the outcome of which is meant to be idealistic, positive, uplifting, redemptive, and restorative. It is the eucatastrophe that Tolkien talks about, the defiance in the face of 'universal final defeat'. But the Disney-sequels ignored and/or actively overturned everything positive and meaningful about the original saga (that most lifelong SW fans like myself had valued and cherished since childhood) and all in the service of a decidedly lesser wannabe ‘addition’ that was devoid of the inspiring Romanticism and mythopoesis of Lucas’ saga. TFA came at a time when studios had certain assumptions about audience expectations and pandered to those accordingly. So I’m not saying there was direct influence from GoT, just that there was a cultural trend that a lot of media got swept up in at that time. Imo, it's also just the inevitable pitfall of attempting to make something that vaguely resembles ‘Star Wars' appeal to contemporary sensibilities. It was never going to work, because Star Wars (the real Star Wars) is mythic, Romantic, and transcendent—a type of story that, sadly, contemporary studios and audiences alike seem unable to appreciate.
**Note: most of the meta I've linked on this subject is from my Star Wars sideblog which is vehemently anti-Sequels, so fair warning to anyone who happens to like those. ;p

i think the Jedi-Positive and Jedi-Critical stances can be summed up on whether you value authorial intent or authorial execution.
Most of the Jedi-Positive people I follow quote George Lucas and director commentaries to prove their points, as well as utilize analyses from others at LucasFilm that have to keep the general status quo. It's all based on what Lucas was trying to portray, while ignoring the product in execution.
The Jedi-Critical stance tends to look at the prequel execution, and they question the obvious uncomfortable moments that have real-life parallels to atrocities. They tend to be more Legends fans, whose writers actually delved into the terrifying implications. It's all on criticizing execution while disregarding intent.
Like, take the argument about Jedi children. A Jedi-Positive person would argue that all the children are all given up with consent from their parents; this is what I am sure Lucas was intending to portray. A Jedi-Critical person will look at this and go "wait. how much 'consent' was in this encounter? the government can legally take these kids and have a representative show up to a farmer's house and tell the farmer they can technically say no? that is some bullshit." And there is real-life evidence for this. It's more on the execution.
Or the argument about love. Jedi-Positive people turn to Lucas's interview to show that they really meant it in the Buddhist sense, and if you value intent that works. Jedi-Critical people would argue that the marketing states that the Jedi cannot love, and nothing in the movies states that the Jedi meant non-toxic love when they eschew attachments.
They're both valid positions, but I think a lot of fandom brutality comes from not understanding either view, or demeaning one view in favor of another. It's perfectly acceptable to value one over the other.
#star wars#starwars#jedi#jedi order#the jedi order#star wars meta#sw fandom meta#sw#sw prequels#sw fandom#pro jedi#anti jedi#jedi critical#jedi positivity#I also think a lot of it is also based on filters as well#but i didn't want to crowd the post#lucas used a fairytale structure to write his story#but there's still a huge portion of deconstruction in canon stuff#maybe i'll write more

(via @tooattached2fictionalcharacters )
I just saw someone say that Star Wars has no happy ending romances, and now I'm fuming and want to burn Disney to the ground all over again. You know who is THE 'happy ending' Star Wars romance of all time? Han and Leia. They had a happy ending for nigh on 40 years, and I'm not going to let the steaming pile o' shite that was TFA tell me otherwise. If you think that ooc nonsense is canon, then you're bringing the pain on yourself at this point.
So yes, Star Wars absolutely has a 'happy ending' romance, and it's the OG couple of them all: Han and Leia.

06. jailbreak and detonations
IT'S BEEN THREE DAYS since that nightmare, and the whole jail floor has been eerily quiet again. Soka had gone to check the blind woman's abandoned cell but it looks exactly the same every other time she checked it.
So, instead, Soka circled her cell a few times, unsure of what to do. It quickly turned out she didn't need to figure out what to do because within a few minutes the alarms overhead started to blare.
Soka practically jumped out of her skin, watching as the world around her devolved into red lights and pitchy screams. The wailing and banging activated with the alarms, and to Soka's relief, a small team of guards raced down the hall past her cell.
The sounds of shooting started shortly after overhead, and Soka listened patiently, heart pattering in her chest, as the shooting slowly came down the levels.
Within the hour, the shooting was on her level.
Soka squinted and could sort of see what was going on. A group of people in armour (was that turquoise?) were taking down the guards. Soka was mighty pleased to see the guards be taken down, they hadn't been treating her all too nice during her time here.
The invaders finished off the guards and Soka watched, interested, as they stalked down the hall, looking into cells. Maybe they were here for the Pike Syndicate member that was brought in a few days ago? Soka nodded to herself, that seemed likely.
"Who are you nodding to?" a young female voice spoke up.
Soka looked up, startled, to find one of the invaders, but tiny. Soka blinked at her, mouth agape. "What?"
"Omega, who are you talking to?" A male voice scolded the young invader. A tall invader came into view of her cell. He had prominent goggles taking over the visor position in his helmet. "Hunter!" he called out as the young invader—Omega— took a step back.
An invader shorter than the goggled one walked into view. Hunter, the goggled one called him. Goggles moved over to the pad connected to her laser door while Hunter looked down at Omega.
Omega must've understood because she moved back, stepping out of view, and started to whisper to herself. Soka belatedly realized Omega was relaying information into a comm.
"You're Sokanara Tanobi, correct?" Goggles said as the pad sparked and flickered before dying out, the laser door dropping. Soka watched in awe.
"Correct?" he repeated.
Soka nodded her head quickly, turning her gaze to Goggles. "Yeah, yeah." she paused frowning, "...what's it to you?"
Goggles stuck out a hand as if to introduce himself, "I am Tech. We are here to rescue you."
"Yeah!" Omega chirped in, causing Hunter to send her a hand signal which had her grumbling.
Soka watched the interaction with curiosity. "Does he- Hunter, does he not speak?"
Tech tilted his head, she could see his eyes bouncing around her face, wondering why she was asking this question. "He can." Tech spoke measuredly.
"I just prefer not to."
The voice sent tingles down her spine and Soka turned to look where Hunter had taken off his helmet, crouched next to Omega who had also taken off her helmet.
He was checking her helmet for damages, and Omega was just finding fun in wearing Hunter's. It was clearly too large for her, slipping oddly onto her face, loose around the edges. Omega's hands still stimmed with glee.
A beep to Tech's comm had him scowling before taking a blaster and a datapad from his hip. Soka hadn't even noticed they were there. "Echo's pinpointed more guards coming down to our level, we must move."
Omega slipped off Hunter's helmet, passing it back to him, before taking her own and putting it back on. Hunter did the same to his helmet and held a finger to a round disc on the sides of his helmet. She heard him speaking, the voice muffled by the helmet, before raising a hand and pointing it down the hall opposite that they had come in.
"Wrecker said there's a hidden opening on that side. We've gotta blast it open." Hunter relayed.
Omega's face brightened, reaching into her pocket and pulling out a detonator. Hunter's body tensed in alarm. "What on terra-" he cursed, "Did Wrecker give you that?"
Omega nodded, pulling out some more detonations to match the detonator. "He told me he wanted me to blow something up." Omega shrugged, passing them to Tech who had his hands out. Tech inspected the detonations before nodding firmly to himself, starting down the hall.
Hunter sighed, "Why does no one listen to me," he mumbled sourly as he followed after Tech. Omega looked up at Soka, "C'mon miss! let's go!"
Soka nodded, pushing her legs into motion to jog alongside Omega. Soka briefly looked at the empty cell of the blind woman, a shudder running through her as a vision of bloodied worms flashed in her mind. She tore her gaze away and ran a bit faster to catch up with Omega when she realized she had slowed down.
They reached the other two, who were talking quite animatedly about the explosives. Tech was telling Hunter to set the explosives already due to the limited time they had, while Hunter was saying he didn't want to over-explode the wall as to bring attention to them.
"Aren't the guards already coming down?" Soka inputted as she slowed to a stop beside Omega. Tech waved an exasperated hand at Soka as if to say "see?" at Hunter.
As if to prove Tech's point even further, a bolt from a blaster shot zipped past the group and embedded itself into the wall. It almost seemed like Hunter had already sensed it coming since he snagged Omega, pulling her down to the ground, as the blaster shot was close to aiming at her.
Tech kicked into high gear as well, grabbing Soka's arm and tugging her behind him. Tech passed Soka some explosives and without a word, started to shoot back at the guards. Hunter did the same, and Soka watched as Omega pulled out a large bow and zipped out neon pink arrows.
The trio didn't need communication, a few hand signals was all it took for them to change tactics whenever it was needed.
They had evidently decided to tuck themselves to the grooves in the wall, Tech dragging Soka belatedly with him, and ducked in and out of shooting at the cockroaches of guards appearing.
"As one falls, another just takes it's place!" Hunter called out, irritated.
"Change of tactics!" Tech replied, a few fingers flying in the air at Hunter's direction. Maker if Soka knew what on terra it meant, but Hunter seemed to understand just fine. He pulled a popper out of his pocket and launched it at the horde of guards.
A zapping filled the air, and before Soka could blink, Tech snatched some of the explosives from her hands and tossed it towards Hunter. Hunter caught it easily and passed it to Omega, to which he explained something to her. Omega nodded and Tech turned to Soka.
"Follow Omega's lead, she will explain what you need to do." He said before rushing after Hunter, who Soka hadn't even realized had left.
Maker, she'd be a really bad spy.
Soka turned to find Omega already scaling the wall behind them, easily placing her explosives in a half circle.
"Omega, what do I do?" Soka called out over the blaster fire. Omega turned to her with a beam, "Just toss me the explosives when I ask for it!"
They worked in almost perfect sync, save for some of Soka's awful tosses, and soon a decent detonation circle was created on the wall.
Omega reached to her side and clicked a button on the side of her comm. It buzzed three times and Omega took a step back. "C'mon," she said with a gesture.
Soka followed Omega into the grooves in the wall, tucking themselves into it, while supposedly waiting for something.
That something came a few seconds later, some blaster fire following, and Tech and Hunter slipped into view.
This time, Tech got to Omega first and curled himself around her. Soka watched in confusion as Hunter came up to her, hands empty and open towards her.
"We're gonna set off the detonations, turn your face to the wall and cover your ears." He told her. Soka nodded, doing as he said, and felt his presence behind her as he tucked himself against her like Tech did to Omega. Hunter's gloves felt surprisingly cold over her hands as he guided them to cover her ears, helping to muffle the world around her.
The ground shook under them and within a second Hunter had removed himself from covering Soka, grabbing her shoulder and turning her around. "Alright, let's go."
Tech and Omega had already removed themselves from the grooves, and were returning blaster fire through the smoke. Hunter led Soka through the hole in the wall, revealing a big vast canyon before them. It was one of the grand openings to the lower-levels, Soka realized.
There was no where to run, except to tuck themselves into the side of the wall, and shuffle along.
And did that Soka did, having watched Hunter duck back into the building to help bring out Omega and Tech.
While Soka waited against the wall, shivering and heart pounding, the whir of a ship caught her attention. She watched as fire spewed out of the backside, the ship coming closer to her current position.
Soka swallowed thickly, thinking she was done for. She tried to shuffle along the wall to get back to the entrance of the exploded hole, when Omega burst out of the hole, Tech and Hunter following respectively.

thinking about how people always say that padmé and luke loving vader was a radical act and the story is about how we have to choose love and compassion in the face of evil. then thinking about how in the hunger games, lucy gray also did that even when her life was as inhumane and soul crushing as coryo’s, but worse. she still chose to believe in love and people being naturally good. and coryo didn’t choose that so he had a hollow, shitty life and died miserable

Anakin truly set out the goal to marry Padmé as soon as he first laid his eyes on her. He didn't even interact with her that much to come to the conclusion that he wanted to wed her. As soon as they met again 10 years later, he wasted no time and put a ring on that finger. They didn't even take at least a month; they went straight to marriage. Their romance is essentially a Disney fairytale 😅❤️

Can’t stand seeing posts and comments that are like ‘I wish Star Wars were good’ or ‘if only Star Wars were good’ — um, excuse me, it IS good????
The Skywalker saga is a good story.
The six Lucas films form two trilogies that mirror and complement one another.
That’s it, that’s Star Wars.
If you don’t like the real Star Wars, and don’t think it’s worth anything, then what are you even doing in the fandom?
One of the problems is people just passively accepting everything Disney claims as ‘Star Wars’ to be, well, Star Wars. When it’s not. It’s fanfiction that no one is required to consider as canon. So those god-awful sequels that tried to erase the existing storyline and claim a bunch of OOC shit happened to the Original Trio? Not part of the actual story.
Another problem is that a lot of contemporary fans are unable to appreciate the Lucas saga simply for what it is, and instead like to claim they could have done it ‘better’. I realise that fandom in general is largely about building on or ‘fixing’ things in canon to be more to one’s liking, but that is a highly subjective practice, and one person’s ‘improvement’ might not be the same as another’s. The Disney-era perhaps gives the impression that this is just a big soulless franchise with faceless creators churning out ‘content’ that is up for grabs, when the original heart of the story adhered, more or less, to one single creator’s vision.
The jokey meme that ‘Star Wars sucks’ and the constant lamenting that ‘if only it were good’ gets rather old for those of us who legitimately LOVE the Lucas saga exactly as it is.
#I sometimes think I’m the only SW fan in the universe who is happy with the six film Lucas saga exactly the way it is!!!#anti Disney#pro Lucas saga#anti Disney fandom#I unironically love Star Wars!!!#if you only like it as a joke please don’t bother#go find some sci fi you like and leave my space fairytale alone

We all know Anakin misses his mom, and we also know that padawans are allowed to return to their home planets to complete whatever rites of passage they have in their culture. Why doesn't Anakin just lie and say he needs to visit his mom to complete... The Trials.
Starting from the age of 12, all children of his and Shmi's home planet must follow their parent to complete a series of arduous tasks on a yearly basis until the age of ... 21 ...45 ... it's flexible. Really, it's just Anakin visiting and helping Shmi with chores (and maybe giving her money).
But wait! Wouldn't the Council just check if Tatooine actually has traditions like that? I say that's useless. The Council doesn't know where Shmi and Anakin came from, Tatooine's just where they were trafficked to, and only Shmi really knows where their home planet actually is. Anakin can make it up, and Shmi would probably catch on if the jedi asked her to verify it.
If Obi-Wan can tell Anakin's lying... no he can't. Obi-Wan's not a snitch.
#star wars#anakin skywalker#shmi skywalker#neither shmi nor anakin lived on tatooine by choice#i don't know why we don't explore thos missing aspect of their culture more often#who knows how much shmi actually remembers but it's still worth exploring#anyway let's have fun with anakin finessing yearly visitations#let's live in a world where fairytales don't kill the mom just to tell the audience that the protagonist is alone in the woods#also for all we know shmi and anakin are from space sweden or something#sw
