Sci-Fi Saturday: Fleischer Studios' Superman
Tumblr media
Week 22:
Film(s): Superman (Dir. Dave Fleischer, et. al., 1941-1942, USA)
Viewing Format: Blu Ray
Date Watched: 2021-11-05 and 2021-11-12
Rationale for Inclusion:
Every child who has grown up in the United States since 1938 remembers the first version of Superman that they encountered. For my parents' generation, it was typically the television series starring George Reeves, Adventures of Superman, which ran between 1950 and 1958, but much longer in reruns. For me, and a lot of my generation, the first time involved one of the films produced between 1978 and 1987 featuring Christopher Reeves as the superhero, even if it was rapidly followed by the 1993-1997 television series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman starring Teri Hatcher and Dean Cain and/or the 1996-2000 Saturday morning cartoon Superman: The Animated Series from the same creative team that made Batman: The Animated Series.
Unlike his fellow pulp comic heroes Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon, Superman's pop culture relevance never lapsed over the decades. Buck and Flash may have remained fixtures on the funny pages between their popular serials and feature film revivals in the late 1970s and early 1980s, but for the most part they are associated with their original popularity in the 1930s and a retro aesthetic. Superman has been perpetually contemporary since 1938, changing and evolving to meet present day aesthetics and technologies, in part because his exploits have been continuously running in multiple mediums, beginning with The Adventures of Superman radio show in 1940.
The first time Superman lept from the comic pages to a moving image medium, however, was 1941 with the first of 17 animated shorts starring the Man of Steel by  Fleischer Studios, and later Famous Studios, and released through Paramount Pictures. These shorts fell into the public domain and were a fixture on the early years of the Disney Channel, from which my mother recorded them onto VHS tapes that I grew up watching.
As is the case with most public domain works, the shorts are widely available, in varying degrees of quality and with or without watermarks; you can find multiple copies on Archive.org. The original camera negatives ended up in the ownership of Superman's current copyright holder, Warner Bros, who released 4K scans of them on Blu Ray in 2023. That probably is the ideal home video version to watch, but it didn't exist yet when it was time in our survey to view the shorts, so we went with the standard definition copies on the 2011 Blu-Ray set The Superman Motion Picture Anthology. That set only includes the first 9 shorts, produced by Fleischer Studios, not the later 8 produced by Famous Studios.
As with the Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon serials, we did not watch all of the shorts, only a representative selection: Superman (The Mad Scientist, Dir. Dave Fleischer, 1941, USA), The Mechanical Monsters (Dir. Dave Fleischer, 1941, USA), Billion Dollar Limited (Dir. Dave Fleischer, 1942, USA), and The Arctic Giant (Dir. Dave Fleischer, 1942, USA).
Reactions:
The quality of the animation, pacing, and Sammy Timberg score make these shorts a joy to watch over 80 years after their original debut. Fleischer Studios made the most of their signature use of rotoscope and the Technicolor color process, keeping the color palette vibrant yet realistic. Nostalgia bias factors into my opinions, of course, but so does rewatching them after going through film school.
Fans of Superman who watch the Fleischer shorts for the first time may be surprised to discover that the character's origin story is different from the one they know. The prologue to The Mad Scientist explains Superman's origins: he is still the seemingly last survivor of planet Krypton, but like all Kryptonians was born with his wondrous powers. Later iterations on his origin would explain that Kryptonians were basically the same as Earth humans, but the rays of Earth's yellow sun made the child of a planet that had a red sun (like Krypton) gain superpowers. (Apologies to any deeply devoted Superman fans if I am misrepresenting or over simplifying this lore.)
While casual fans may not be aware of Superman's conversion to solar power, most will tell you that the escape pod with baby Superman, or Kal-El, was discovered in Smallville, Kansas by a couple driving by in a car, Jonathan and Martha Kent, who adopt him and raise him as their son. In the character history given in The Mad Scientist, however, baby Superman grew up in an orphanage, despite the Kents having been previously introduced in the comics in 1939. I expect the Kents were written out by the Fleischers for the sake of brevity, and fortunately that creative choice did not become a standard part of Superman's canon.
A creative choice by Fleischer Studios that did become a major part of character canon though was Superman's ability to fly. Prior to The Mad Scientist, Superman could only "leap tall buildings in a single bound," as the expository intro originating with the shorts goes. The Fleischers thought that in animation this leaping looked funny--an example can be seen of Superman leaping from rooftop to rooftop in The Arctic Giant--and suggested that he fly instead. This upgrade in movement also suited the concise nature of the shorts, and led to them opening with a variant on the exclamation from the radio series: "Up in the sky, look! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Superman!"
The radio show and shorts not only shared key phrases, they also shared actors. Bud Collyer and Joan Alexander voiced Clark Kent/Superman and Lois Lane, respectively, on The Adventures of Superman radio show and reprised their roles for the animated shorts. As someone who has appreciated Kevin Conroy voicing Bruce Wayne/Batman and Mark Hamill voicing the Joker across multiple television series, movies and video games, I was delighted to discover that this consistency across mediums had an earlier precedent.
One precedent that neither the shorts nor the radio series originated was Superman fighting for, "Truth, justice, and the American way." Much like "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance, "the American way" was added in the 1950s amid the Red Scare and start of the Cold War. Granted, like other aspects of Superman, his mission statement has varied over the decades; it's currently, "Truth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow."
Like her love interest, Lois Lane has also changed to meet the needs of whatever was appropriate for a contemporary working woman to be like. Regardless of the decade, she frequently is thrust into the role of damsel in distress, either due to being too gung ho to capture a story or unfortunate coincidence. While that is the case in most of the shorts, it was refreshing to see her pick up a machine gun in Billion Dollar Limited and actively fight the train hijackers. A lot of pulp and science fiction media would never have a woman use, or be given, a gun, even if the protagonists are actively fighting a monster. (I'm looking at you specifically The Creature from the Black Lagoon.) So kudos to the Fleischers for going there, even if it was for the sake of narrative convenience more than a purposeful statement of female capabilities.
Looking at the Fleisher shorts in terms of the science fiction genre, some are more obviously works of science fiction than others. Yes, Superman's status as an alien across the more crime based stories, like Billion Dollar Limited, or fantasy stories, like The Arctic Giant, means there's always a current of sci-fi through the shorts. However, the laboratory and beam weapon of the title character in The Mad Scientist and the robot thieves of The Mechanical Monsters are explicitly and influentially sci-fi.
The aesthetics of those two shorts in particular inspired the "dark deco" style used in Batman: The Animated Series, and the robot thieves would be homaged and referenced in multiple works of media, probably most notably in Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (Dir. Kerry Conran, 2004, USA).
Although not often explicitly cited as an influence on The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (Dir. Eugène Lourié, 1953, USA) or Godzilla (Gojira, Dir. Ishiro Honda, 1954, USA), The Arctic Giant is clearly a precursor to both. The Tyrannosaurus in Arctic Giant is found frozen in the Arctic, like the Rhedosaurus of 20,000 Fathoms. The reporters on the rooftop in Godzilla are just as brave and foolish as Lois Lane in The Arctic Giant when it comes to capturing the story, though sadly they don't have Superman around to prevent their death. Granted all three rampaging dinosaurs owe a debt of influence to Kong trashing New York City in King Kong (Dir. Marion C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack, 1933, USA), but it still was fascinating to see Superman take on a city destroying dinosaur a decade prior to 20,000 Fathoms expanding on the theme, and Godzilla making it truly artful.
In summation, the Fleischer Superman shorts are an influential delight. It's rare to have something from your childhood remain just as engaging and enjoyable to watch as an over-educated adult. If you have never taken the time to see them, I highly recommend you check them out.

saint. || soobin (3.10)*finale*🌪
congratulations! you’ve made it to the final part and very last chapter of saint! thank you so much for reading I appreciate you in every way! enjoy my love! <3
Tumblr media
pairing: soobin x reader genre: au word count; 4k
blinded by fury, soobin made his way outside using all the strength he could muster just to punch yeonjun in his face brutally. he stumbled back holding his lip that was now leaking blood. “who the fuck do you think she is?!”.
he grabs him by the collar of his shirt and throws him against the cabin wall forcefully. he glares over at beomgyu, “I suggest you get the fuck out of here before I beat your ass too”. he mutters looking him coldly in his eyes. beomgyu did as he were told, not wanting any part in whatever was about to take place.
“what the fuck did you do with her?”. soobin breathes with his nerves racing up a wall. he wanted yeonjun dead. “I kiss--”.
interrupting his sentence was soobin’s other fist punching him in his eye until he stumbled his way to the ground. yeonjun uses his hands to try and get soobin off of him. soobin was aggressively punching him on every open spot of his face he saw. yeonjun’s face ached and he felt his nose overflow with blood. the both of them were breathing hard with their breath becoming nothing but frost in the wintry air.
“this whole time I’m thinking you’re my real fucking friend! and you were plotting to fuck my girlfriend for money?”. soobin punches him in his jaw and watches him double over.
“have you lost your everlasting fucking mind?!”. he screams once more before wrapping his hands around his neck squeezing it as hard as he possibly could. yeonjun could feel himself grow weaker but he wouldn’t let soobin have the last hit. hell no.
he reaches his hand up and punches soobin in his jaw, making soobin sit back a bit, enough to make yeonjun come back and hit him again. “you silly bitch. she wanted me anyways”. yeonjun smirks in a way that sparked a bigger flame in soobin . soobin clenches his jaw and jumps on yeonjun prior to clutching the boys’ neck and beating him in face with his fist nonstop. he didn’t care how much blood got on his hand, he didn’t care how much yeonjun was yelping.
“fuck you bitch! fuck you! she’s mine!”.
the only people that were able to stop soobin were five random guys seeing how desperate yeonjun was for air and room to breathe. it was a struggling task trying to pry soobin off of yeonjun but they did so successfully.
“let me go I’m going to kill that son of a bitch!”. soobin screams. one other guy was helping yeonjun up trying to get him to a nearby clinic to get him cleaned up. yeonjun spit his blood into the snow, painting it bright red. he glares at soobin with swollen eyes before he was staggering away.
soobin was wrestling with the numerous guys that were drawing him back. “i’m going to kill him!!”.
“listen, calm down. alright? if you don’t we’re going to have to call the police. you can’t do that out here”.
they worked with him until soobin was at least slightly in his right mind. if he ran into yeonjun again he knew he wouldn’t be. soobin pushes his back against the wall with his eyes tearing up at the thought of you. he missed you so much and he just couldn’t take it any longer.
he knew what cabin you stayed in so it was easy to find it. taehyun was busy playing video games with his other friend for a bit so it was up to kai to answer the door. soobin asks if you were here and kai nodded.
“are you her boyfriend?”. he asks.
“yes just let me in”. kai shrugs and pushes the door open for him. “I was on my way to a video game tournament anyways”. he dorkily states and leaving shortly after.  soobin exhales as he made his way upstairs and down the hallway. he knew where your room was considering the fact that kai and taehyun left their bedroom doors open.
he knocks. you’d just gotten out of the shower trying to dry your hair and calm yourself from whatever that episode was at the hot tub. when you heard the knock at your door you assumed it was taehyun or kai. you wrap a towel around your body and open it. you were immediately greeted by soobin’s lips pressing against yours soft and passionately, just how you liked it. you missed them dearly. his scent, his embrace, his hands, you couldn’t stop yourself.
soobin lets his tongue wander your mouth while he picks you up and let your back lay against the wall. your legs were wrapped around his waist. his lips suck yours savoring each touch. he waited until you both needed air to press his forehead against yours.
“princess I’m so sorry”. he breathes. “I don’t deserve a woman like you I really don’t and that’s why I want you so much”.
you could feel the sincerity in his eyes. you couldn’t find words to give back to him, so you cup his cheek instead pressing your lips on his once more. you let your lips slide down to his neck and you suck gently before biting it softly, just how he taught you. soobin’s breathing patterns shift and he’s relishing the way your lips felt on his neck at a needed time such as this.
while you were sucking his neck and carries you to your bed and lay you down comfortably. you make an effort to reach your lips up to his skin and nip it lightly. “I tried to turn myself in and they said the case was c-closed”, he breathed with a small groan.
“I even offered to p-pay for mia’s medical bills and she’ll be starting therapy soon”. he breathes again with another groan. you tug on his waistband of his sweatpants. he slides them off in one go.
he decides to kiss along the coast of your jawline instead and you let him. the lower he went the lower you dropped your towel. soobin’s lips were now curling around your hardened nipples and he was compassionate with the way he sucks them, not wanting to hurt you in any way. you weren’t hurt at all though, instead you let your shaky moans get the best of you. he flat tongued his way down your breasts to your pussy, kissing the lips faintly. you flinch. he’s gripping your thighs and lapping your clit up with his tongue obediently and you felt as if you were seeing stars. your heart races. he swirls his tongue around your wet folds and even spits to make sure you were soaking. you felt yourself throbbing at the feeling of his tongue on you again and you regretted ever leaving it.
his lips were sopping against your neck again and you felt his hard on through his briefs. desperate for friction you began to grind your hips against it, now tugging at the waistband of his boxer briefs.
“p-please soobin”. you whine which took him by surprise. “you sure?”. he questions and you nod with need. “do you have a condom?”.
“we don’t need one. I’m clean”.
“soobin”. “I swear. plus it won’t feel good for you like that anyway. I’ll pull out”.
“you promise?”.
“I promise. hold on”. soobin assures while he was aligning himself with your hole. “it’s going to hurt a little alright? but it will hurt worse if you tense up. try to relax yourself”.
you did as you were told and try your best not to think about it. soobin kisses your cheeks and you gasp feeling his length sluggishly fill you to the brim. you feel a small pain, “soobin wait”. you utter. he slides it out, “it gets better with repitition”.
you winced for the first two times he bucked his hips into you but your world flipped upside down with the third. your breathing hitched and you felt the pleasure sprint through your veins.
his lips are ghosting yours and he relished your small moans vibrating his mouth. he tongue kisses you and fucks into you a bit harder now seeing that you were enjoying it. he groans lowly and clenches his jaw at how tight you were.
“shit”. he mutters while you were moaning nonstop beneath him. you never knew something could feel this good. you bit your lips.
“ssoobin oh my god”. you whimpered. “you’re taking me so well princess”. soobin whispers in between breaths. he fucked you to his heart’s desire until his felt his dick anxiously throbbing inside you. “flip over”. he demanded. you did as you were told.
“arch your back for me”.
you did your best and propped your ass in the air for him desperately wanting him back inside you again. he slaps your ass. “good girl”. he pushes himself in again and you were on cloud nine at this angle. soobin grips the top of the headboard and gradually begans pounding into you. your stomach churned and you went insane with the way he was making you feel. the sweet sounds of your cries and the slapping of your skin against his filled the atmosphere of the room. you were gasping at a fast pace.
“fuck you’re so wet”. soobin growled. you bit into the pillow in front of you trying to keep from moaning too loud. you could only do it for so long. once soobin went deeper into you you couldn’t contain yourself any longer. you bit your lips until you were able to get a sound from your lips.
“f-f-fuck!”. you groan to soobin’s surprise. he’d never heard you curse before. but in that moment you didn’t care what you said. you were way to blinded by euphoria to care about anything. soobin was drilling you and the headboard was beating the wall dangerously fast.
“you’re so sexy beneath me like this”. soobin compliments, smacking your ass.
“s-s-oobin i’m going to cum!”. you whine clutching the bed sheets.
“cum for me princess”. he groans and continues his thrusts until your body tensed and your juices was dripping down your thighs. he pulls out as promised and let’s himself release on the towel beneath you both.
“shit”. he breathed collapsing on top of you. the both of you were out of breath but soobin didn’t use that excuse. he kisses the back of your neck and makes a trail to your lips.
“I love you”.
your heart flutters at the words he never said before.
“I love you too”.
❉ ╤╤╤╤ ✿ ╤╤╤╤ ❉
time lapse;
you comb gently through her silky curly strands. she laid across your lap giggling at the tv. her small face was so beautiful, soobin’s eyes with your lips and his smile.
“mommy look! mommy look at the giant bunny!”. she giggles. you smile playfully, “you want to know who else is a big giant bunny?”.
and almost as if he were right on cue your husband is sprinting in the room with you guys’ son on his back, your daughter’s twin, pretending to be an airplane. “guess who just finished bath time!”. he announces obnoxiously. your son giggles holding onto soobin’s neck for dear life. now your son, that was all you. your face, your smile. one thing he did get from his father though was his personality.
soobin landed him on the bed dramatically before tickling him and kissing his cheeks.
“hey stop! you guys are going to make mommy mess up my hair”. your daughter whines.
“stop being such a baby”. your son replies.
“you stop being stupid!”.
“guys, guys, no let’s be nice”. soobin interjects while sitting your son on his lap.
“daddy I have a question”. he mumbles.
“what is it?”.
“how did you meet mommy?”. he asks.
the both of you glare at each other deciding if whether or not you should tell him.

odazai :3c or if you've already been asked for it, then dazatsu!
I only have enough energy to do the Odazai one, Luka~ Since this ask is pretty long (nearly 4k!), here’s the gist if you’re unable to read the full version at this time:
Far from being a perfect couple, what’s emotionally intimate and personal about Dazai and Oda’s relationship is that despite their differences and their faults, they make strides in understanding each other and in recognizing each other’s boundaries. It’s not always perfect, there are mishaps and mistakes along the way, and certain things are a rather sore subject to them both. But something admirable and important to take away from this is that Dazai and Oda make an effort to listen to each other, to understand the undercurrent of tension and stress that lapses between them at times, and they’re both gradually moving forward with what they have learned and that adds vitality and strength to their relationship.
Send Me A Ship, And I’ll Tell You…
who is more likely to hurt the other? While it would seem contrary and even OOC for me to say this, I believe that Oda would be more likely to hurt Dazai. Before you stab me for my hearsay, let me explain.  The term “hurt” can be used as an umbrella term for different types of pain: physical, emotional, mental, etc… Oda wouldn’t physically or mentally hurt Dazai. He has no reason to, and it’s not in his nature to lash out in those ways. The only pain that Oda ever dealt to Dazai was emotional.
We see this towards the end of the Dark Era arc when Oda bids his final farewell to his children before confronting Gide. In the silence of that moment, with desperation rising in his throat, we watch and listen as Dazai asks – no, pleads – for Oda to think this over and find something else to live for. For the first time, the demonic mask of the Port Mafia Executive falls. Left behind and hardly unscathed is the face of a child, of a young man who had nothing to live for but is desperately clinging onto the one person that his world wouldn’t be the same without. Despite all of this, despite this probably being the first time Dazai has ever broken from his usual composure, Oda tells him that he can’t do that.
To Oda, if he was to go back on this, his children would’ve died for nothing. Their deaths would forever haunt him if he couldn’t avenge for them, himself. What’s even more emotionally painful about this scene is that this is one of the few, poignant moments where Oda doesn’t yield to Dazai’s words. It’s hard to put up a nonchalant front and casually go along with what your friend is saying when you’ve lost some of the most important people in your world. With that established and mutually understood, Oda leaves behind a gaping hole within Dazai’s heart before departing from the scene.
But even if we forget that canon exists and we’re lawlessly frolicking through the land of AU, I still stand by the idea that Oda is more likely to emotionally hurt Dazai. Not in a sense where there’s a lack of respect or trust in the relationship, not in a sense where everything’s on the rocks and hearts are on edge, but in the sense of honesty. Of the duo, Oda is more of an honest man and Dazai knows this. So when Oda says something, the weight behind his words is even heavier because there’s no hidden agenda to obscure anything. Oda means what he says. So sometimes, whether intentional or not, what he says hurts.
Dazai isn’t someone who’d flourish his heart at his sleeve. Or in other words, he’d rarely admit if he was hurt by something Oda had said. I’d imagine that Dazai would take Oda’s words into consideration and resolve to do better if disappointment is what’s lingering in the air. Having known him for a considerable amount of time, Oda would notice the slight shift in Dazai’s words and body language and realize that he had hurt him.
who is emotionally stronger? At a first glance, it seems 50/50. Oda and Dazai both possess an incredible amount of resilience and resolve, so I have no idea who would be emotionally stronger than the other! I’d say that they’re both equals when it comes to this^^
who is physically stronger? At first glance, you’d think it’s Oda. Former-assassin, former glorified handyman of the Port Mafia, and probably dragged a very drunk-off-his-ass Dazai from the Bar Lupin after a long Friday night…
This question ultimately depends on what you mean by physical strength. If we’re talking about endurance and physical prowess, I’d say that Oda has the upperhand in that department. If we’re talking about endurance in regards to physical pain and taking into account the body’s rate of healing after being afflicted by a series of injuries, Dazai wins in that department. They’re both physically stronger than the other in different ways.
who is more likely to break a bone? Dazai has probably broken as many bones in his body as there are stars in the sky.
who knows best what to say to upset the other?Dazai. Sometimes, whether he means well or not, he knows exactly what to say to garner a rise from Oda. Sometimes it’s through a careless phrase or a careless set of words, sometimes it’s through an overly elaborate explanation when only a word or two would suffice or sometimes, Dazai drifts a little too far and Oda is reeling him back. Oda is a writer, after all. He can decipher many of the nuances behind Dazai’s words.
who is most likely to apologise first after an argument?Dazai is aware when he takes an argument too far, so I could see him being the first to apologize. There are moments where he’ll fixate on a little thing and an argument escalates as a result of that fixation. Oda would’ve grown tired of it and would try to move on, but Dazai would reel the topic back into the foreground of the conversation until A] Oda tells Dazai that he needs some time to himself or B] Oda may have to raise his voice so Dazai would know that he doesn’t want to continue the conversation anymore.
Dazai never realized he had a habit of fixating on certain things in conversations until he saw how upset Oda was during one of its first occurrences. Before Oda could apologize for raising his voice, an air of exasperation at his tongue, Dazai apologized first. He’d apologize for not paying attention to Oda’s boundaries, for pushing Oda beyond his comfort zone, and for ignoring his repeated asks/requests to change the topic of conversation. Dazai initially ignored these things because this is the same tactic he’d used to whittle information out from traitors, criminals, and hostages that had found their way into one of the Port Mafia’s interrogation rooms. He didn’t think that old tactic would emerge in his and Oda’s relationship, but now he knows.
who treats who’s wounds more often? Oda is one of the very few people that Dazai trusts enough for this job. Dazai is intimately aware of how vulnerable he is while his wounds are getting treated, and he trusts Oda enough to know that the man won’t stab him while he’s getting stitches or rubbing ointment over his bruises.
who is in constant need of comfort? Having forsaken his humanity while living under the Port Mafia’s name, there are moments where Dazai reaches out for Oda and cuddles into the man’s arms. Because within that moment, while surrounded by Oda’s warm and tight embrace, Dazai feels a little more human. He feels like he’s able to continue on this path of being a good person, a person striving towards the light. He feels a little safer, able to let down his guard and simply be himself. He feels whole, even though he’s a few cracks away from falling apart. Oda is the embodiment of Dazai’s strength, so Dazai snuggles against him to regain that strength.
who gets more jealous? I can see slight shades of this from both of them. Where for Oda, the jealousy manifests as a want to protect Dazai from others that might be using him for their own good or for worse. And for Dazai, the jealousy manifests like a calm before a storm when he quietly confronts someone on what their intentions are with Oda. Jealousy, especially when in regards to love, isn’t an emotion that I write about often so I’m not sure how to answer this^^
who’s most likely to walk out on the other? Dazai. Not because he wants to, but because it’ll protect Oda and the world that Oda believes in.
who will propose? It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a man with everything to live for would want to share that everything with the man he has longed for. For someone as exquisite and as eccentric as Dazai, marrying him in a church was one of the last things on Oda’s mind. But to marry him like this, with Life and Death as their sole witnesses, perhaps it wasn’t a strange idea after all. In a beautiful yet peculiar way, it made sense to die together in order to live together.
So after an unsuccessful attempt at leaping from a bridge and falling into a river, while Dazai fished him from the edge of the embankment and congratulated him for surviving his first suicide attempt, Oda proposed right then and there. When Dazai reached out his hand, Oda clasped a wet engagement ring against his palm and asked if Dazai would marry him. The only sound that registers to Oda’s ears are the quick, short breaths that unfurl from Dazai when he realizes what the latter has just asked. He mumbles quietly, more to himself than to anyone else, that he’d only bring Oda trouble. Without missing a beat, Oda replies that in loving someone for who they are, to know their flaws and love them too, was an honest kind of love. That’s how Oda described his love for Dazai, and Dazai just stares at him before a smile threatens to break his expression.
who has the most difficult parents?Considering I know nothing about their family history, I can’t answer this question with confidence! If I were to guess, I’d say Dazai.
who initiates hand-holding when they’re out in public? During the soft lulls where they’re walking together, occasionally brushing hands because they’re walking so closely to one another, Oda reaches out for Dazai and Dazai intertwines their fingers together. They fit so naturally, hand in hand, as if there’s nowhere else that their hands could be.
who comes up for the other all the time? I don’t know what this question means.
who hogs the blankets? Occasionally, but more often than Oda could count, he’d sleepily climb into bed and discover that all the blankets are gone. The fleece, the cotton, the synthetic wool, the heater-blanket that Dazai has cherished during the past four years of their relationship, and the thin sheet that Oda often drapes under because his body overheats at night are gone. Disappeared. Vanished, like they were never here. Patting his hands around the bed, eyes still closed and heavy with sleep, Oda tries to figure out where everything had gone. Eventually, his hands meander from his side to the bed to Dazai’s. Where his fingers thread through Dazai’s hair, where his palm lightly taps Dazai’s snuggled cheek, and….where Oda’s hands discover a large and fluffy blanket cocoon where Dazai’s body should be.
It takes about fifteen seconds before Oda feels like he has enough energy to open his eyes, and what he sees makes him wonder if he’s dreaming. Dazai had wrapped all of the blankets around himself, and he’s currently snugged like a burrito on his side of the bed. If the light snoring is of any indication, Dazai is fast-asleep and has already drifted off to La La Land. Sinking into the bed slowly, Oda carefully rolls onto this side and tries to peel the cocoon off from his husband. He knows that Dazai gets cold at night, but this is rather extreme. Especially since the heater-blanket is so closely snugged to Dazai, Oda fears that his beloved will be dead by the next morning because of overheating.
One measly inch at a time, pausing every now and then when Dazai moves or wiggles around, Oda takes his time as he slowly unravels the cocoon. With each layer that he manages to peel off, Oda can discern a sweet smell. It’s faint, almost like the vanilla body wash that’s in the shower right now, and Oda can find the smell on the sheets and it’s even stronger with every blanket-layer he manages to pull off from Dazai. Ah, Dazai must’ve fallen asleep as soon when he got out from the shower. Probably cold from the lack of steam around him, it would’ve prompted him to fashion this blanket cocoon. It all made sense now. The last blanket-layer, the heated-blanket, remained untouched as Oda gathered the rest of the cocoon and lazily dispersed the layers around the bed. Draped under his thin sheet, now secure and slightly protected from the cold, Oda can finally sleep.
But oh, he’s roused from his slumber and it’s barely been five minutes! As he opens his eyes, Oda realizes that he’s slowly being turned. Somewhere in the midst of sleep, Dazai had instinctively reached out for Oda and is currently tangled yet snuggled under the man’s arms and legs. It was as if Dazai could sense that his blanket cocoon had been destroyed, so he carefully crafted another. Where instead of reaching out for the sheets, Dazai reached out for the warmest thing in the vicinity. So that’s how a very toasty Dazai and a very sleepy Oda would fall asleep on most nights. Where Dazai is secured, warm, and affectionately cuddled while Oda tenderly embraces him and feels a little colder when Dazai steals his thin blanket and is too tired to fish for it again.
who gets more sad? Sadness isn’t the only thing that lingers when Dazai is upset, but frustration crackles like a fire if he’s left to his own devices. Maybe sadness and frustration aren’t the only feelings, caged within his heart. Perhaps, there’s a note of exhaustion that unfurls as a whisper because Dazai keeps it to himself.
Sometimes, there are moments where he doesn’t have the energy to be a good person. Sometimes, he feels less inclined to help others and wishes for them to figure out what they need to do instead. Sometimes, it really bothers him how others have a much easier time of being a good person while this is something that Dazai still struggles with. Two, four, six years down the line. He’s tired, emotionally and mentally drained. Unable to put up his usual antics at the office and is aware of Kunikida and Atsushi are staring at him, brows knitted with concern. Dazai leaves the agency early that day and when he gets home, he’s writhed with shame and disappointment with how he’s been acting.
When he left the Port Mafia with Oda, he knew it’d be hard. He knew he’d struggle with being a good person, he knew he’d have to persevere and push through whatever he was dealing with, and…Dazai’s thoughts are interrupted when the front door opens and Oda is watching him with a peculiar glint in his eyes.
The door had been unlocked, but no one was coming inside. That was why Oda opened the door, concerned that something must’ve happened. And he looks at Dazai and sees the weariness in his eyes, Oda takes Dazai by the hand and slowly leads him to the kitchen where he can sit down. Dazai is so stiff that he’s unable to ease into his seat, even with the helpful coax of Oda’s hands at his shoulders. A series of tight, worrying knots are hitched at Dazai’s back so Oda massages the aches with a delicate touch.
During moments like this, Oda knows better than to ask Dazai of what’s bothering him. During moments like this, Oda’s first priority is for Dazai to feel comfortable. And then after that, they can work through and talk about whatever is on Dazai’s mind. Oda gives Dazai a choice on when he wants to talk about these things and tries his best not to urge Dazai to speak if the latter doesn’t feel like speaking. By taking things at a slower, more flexible pace, Oda knows that Dazai will be more honest with him when they’re finally speaking. He knows that Dazai won’t be hiding anything from him, and he knows that Dazai won’t be putting up a front to seem strong in Oda’s eyes.
After about an hour, after an early dinner, after a warm and lazy bath where Dazai messed with a rubber duck while Oda shampooed his hair, and after spending nearly the entire evening snuggled at Oda’s side while the latter is reading a book of poetry, Dazai finally speaks. His voice is quiet, his words are murmured into Oda’s skin, but Oda listens to him. He closes the book of poetry and gives Dazai his full, undivided attention as Dazai whispers what’s been bothering him. He confesses his fears, his worries, and everything in between while Oda rubs small circles along his back.
After hearing Dazai’s concerns, Oda talks to him. This is one of those rare and few moments where Oda speaks a lot more than he usually does while Dazai is quietly listening. Giving advice isn’t one of Oda’s strongest points, so he talks from his own experience and how he kind of figured out that being a good person is more than just being good. You can still be a good person, even if you have bad thoughts or impulses at times. You can still be and become a good person, even if your past wasn’t grounded in a good place. Oda tells Dazai that sometimes being a good person involves struggling through, working against, or even despite these things. That Dazai isn’t any less of a good person because he has to work a lot harder than others, but that he’s grown into a stronger and more self-aware person that recognizes where pitfalls are and consciously makes the choice to do more good rather than harm.
Despite being a writer, sometimes words aren’t Oda’s strongest points. He hopes that what he said helped Dazai, even if it was a little bit. Because in truth, Oda’s still trying to figure this out for himself. He’s been through whatever Dazai’s feeling right now, he’s thought the same thoughts, and felt the same frustrations that would leave him out of it for weeks. During those times, what helped Oda the most was having Dazai with him and having someone to talk to. During moments like this, Oda wants to be there for Dazai even if he isn’t quite sure of what to do. But the effort and company sure helps.
who is better at cheering the other up? Considering the above, I think it’s Oda.
who’s the one that playfully slaps the other all the time after they make silly jokes?A glass or two of whisky has been dropped on multiple occasions because Dazai doesn’t know his own strength when he playfully slaps Oda on the shoulder. The two would be joking about something and Dazai would tell the corniest, worst joke in the history of all jokes. And while he’s laughing his butt off, his hand starts flying and makes an impact with Oda’s shoulder. After a few times, the couple has agreed to an unspoken rule that jokes should be reserved at home. Where the cups are made of plastic, where the alcohol is much cheaper, and where there isn’t a bartender to apologize to whenever a portion of whisky goes flying across the bar.
who is more streetwise?Dazai without a doubt. He knows where all the local gangs are and used to antagonize them when he was younger, more brash, and more trigger-happy with a gun. Since joining the ADA, he has mellowed out and has used his street knowledge to aid the agency when they’re busting arson loots and drug trades.
who is more wise?Dazai has more wisdom when it comes to life, death, and the role of violence when the opportunity is in one’s hands. Oda has more wisdom when it comes to experience, philosophy, and the role a person takes if they’re wanting to reform their life. It really depends on what kind of wisdom you’re talking about.
who’s the shyest? People would say that Oda’s the shyest out of the couple because he’s quiet, he doesn’t speak very much, and he isn’t one for rowdy environments. They would say he’s shy because most of his activities are very introverted (writing, reading, preferring home rather than going outside, etc…) People would often say that if it wasn’t for Dazai, it’d be a wonder if anyone would notice Oda at all. While these assumptions have some truth to their foundations, anyone that knows Oda knows that he isn’t shy.
Oda’s quiet because he’s observing the world, the people, and the environment around him and acts accordingly depending on that observation. He doesn’t speak very much because often, he doesn’t need to speak at all. Or if he does want to speak, he’s carefully choosing his words and deliberates if what he wants to say makes sense, if what he says is polite, and if what he says is meaningful/necessary to the discussion. His activities are rather introverted because he’s a writer. He spends his days at home, working on his manuscript or reading a good book to entice his imagination, and it’s pretty hard to write on the go when you can’t control the weather or the people around you. Oda’s quiet and stoic nature is one of the first things that distinguishes him from a crowd, and people are often drawn to him because there’s this mysterious allure and atmosphere surrounding him. Were it not for Dazai, it’d be a wonder if anyone would talk to Oda at all.
But when the world sees that this dashing young fellow, tackling Oda into a surprise hug, all of the people can breathe a little sigh for Oda’s not as intimidating as he looks.
who boasts about the other more? If Kunikida had a notebook for every moment Dazai talked about Oda, he’d be drowning in a lot of notebooks. Without fail, Dazai would boast about a lot of Oda’s accomplishments. No matter if they’re big or small. Since Oda rarely goes out because he’s working on his manuscript, Dazai takes it as his duty to remind the world of what a good, sweet, caring, and hardworking person his husband is. In which Kunikida will argue how such a good husband married a slacker like Dazai. And in turn, Dazai will have a hand at his chest and dramatically accuse Kunikida of such slander! They would be at each other’s throats were it not for Oda, calling in at the right moment to calm Dazai down and to apologize to Kunikida on behalf of his husband’s behavior.
who sits on whose lap?The simple answer is that they take turns. Dazai sits on Oda’s lap during soft, calm moments where they’re both reading or watching the TV. Oda sits on Dazai’s lap when the latter wants a good cuddle session and claims that he has an easier time when Oda’s on his lap.

three times the strength
trinity friendship, for @renecdote. 💛 T, 4k, hurt/comfort, and just a little more emotional angst than expected.
also available on ao3.
Diana is injured in Gotham City. Bruce and Clark fret and blame themselves.
Bruce: then
Bruce knows fear. He knows how it feels when it settles in his stomach—knows how it feels to strike fear in the hearts of others, too. He is well acquainted with it. He has molded it into an art. He can recognize it as soon as it begins to manifest in widening eyes, quickening heartbeats, twitching fingers flipping a coin between fight and flight.
He knows there’s something wrong as soon as he sets foot in the warehouse.
“Diana,” he says urgently, running to her and dropping to his knees where she lies. She is shaking. He reaches out to touch her shoulder, but she recoils from him, wild-eyed. “Diana, what’s going on?”
A split-second later, he’s connecting with a support beam fifteen feet away. His back hits the wooden post with enough force to bruise (but not to break) and he crumples forward, breath knocked from his lungs. He gasps as he recovers the strength to inhale. “Diana!”
“Do not speak to me!” Diana hisses, towering over him now.
Bruce blinks. “What—”
“You should not be here!”
“Diana.” Bruce keeps his voice calm. “We agreed to meet here after—”
“Liar,” Diana says thunderously. “I have made no such agreements with you. My mother told me that you were not to be trusted. She warned me of your trickery. Do you think me naive? I have spent scores of your years learning of the history of man. You will not find me with my shield down.”
Bruce drags himself back up. In a fight, he’d have recovered his footing already.
(This isn’t a fight. Something has happened to Diana.)
“Stay down.”
Bruce doesn’t, but he lifts his hands in a gesture of surrender. “Diana—what happened?”
“Stay down.” Diana grabs an old broom and snaps the head off in her hands; she jabs the splintered end of the wooden handle at the bat-shaped emblem on Bruce’s chest. Her voice shakes. “If you approach me again, I will not hesitate to stop your heart.”
“Diana,” Bruce repeats, urgency overtaking his calm. “What happened here?”
Diana’s blue eyes narrow into a glare more hateful than Bruce has ever seen on her face. “You dare,” she roars. “She is dead, and you dare to feign ignorance!”
(—she is dead. Pearls clamor across the street in the deafening silence—)
“I was a fool to trust you. I will not make the same mistake again. My mother was right. You do not deserve my help, nor my compassion.”
(—there is no reversing this, there is no way to go back, she’s not breathing, she’s—)
Bruce shakes his head to clear it, but his own heart is pounding now. “I’m—I’m not… Diana, who’s dead?”
His hands are clammy; he clenches them into fists. He needs to know what happened here. He needs to know how he can help, how he can fix this, but—
“Soon, it will be you,” Diana says, and lunges at him.
Clark: now
“This is all my fault,” Clark says, scrubbing his hands through his hair in agitation. Stars twinkle behind him on the other side of the Watchtower’s windows, but he can’t feel the warmth of their light at all. “I shouldn’t even be allowed in here. Bruce, you should tell me to leave. I’m the last person she’ll want to see when she wakes up. I—”
Clark freezes in his chair as Bruce’s hand grasps his shoulder. In the midst of a haze of anxiety, he expects to be pushed away—but Bruce doesn’t let go, and after a moment, Clark takes a deep breath to steady his thoughts.
“Right,” he says, leaning slightly into the pressure of Bruce’s hand. “Right, it’s probably fine. She’ll—she’ll understand. She would have done the same thing in my place.”
“She’s told you as much,” Bruce murmurs. His thumb rubs circles into Clark’s back, and Clark closes his eyes. “On multiple occasions.”
“I know.”
Knowing it was the expected action to take doesn’t alleviate his regret of having taken it.
“She’ll probably be disappointed you didn't get to her sooner,” Bruce says.
Clark grimaces. “Don’t joke about this.”
“Who’s joking?”
“Bruce—”
“Diana will heal, Clark, and she won’t hold her injuries against you.”
Clark cracks open an eye. “And you?”
Bruce looks back at him impassively. “What about me.”
“Well,” Clark says hesitantly, “are you okay? Diana said some stuff that—”
“Diana was under the influence of a mind-altering substance. She didn't mean anything she said to me, nor to you, any more than you meant to break her arms.”
Clark’s eyes shut again. “Oh God,” he says. “Bruce… I saw her face when the bones cracked. She was surprised she could feel that much pain. I’ve known that feeling. The first time I was exposed to Kryptonite, I thought I was going to die.”
“Diana is rational enough to—”
“She was under the influence of a mind-altering substance,” Clark interrupts, parroting Bruce’s own words back at him. “She wasn’t capable of rational thought.”
Bruce’s hand stills on Clark’s shoulder.
“You don’t like the idea of Diana afraid,” Clark says after a moment, because he knows Bruce well enough to make assumptions about what he’s thinking—every so often, anyway. “You’re worried about her, too.”
“Everyone is afraid of something. Diana is no exception.”
“I guess even Amazons fear their own mortality sometimes.”
“No,” Bruce says slowly. “I don’t think that’s it.”
“What, then?” Clark asks, but Bruce lapses into silence, draws both his hands back into his lap, and resumes staring out the window.
Clark chases Bruce’s fingers with his own. They clasp hands quietly, mired in their own thoughts, until J’onn comes to retrieve them.
*
“She is resting,” J’onn says, as he leads Bruce and Clark down the hall to the Watchtower’s medical bay. “She resists most sedatives, but we were able to restrain her until the effects of Scarecrow’s toxin wore off. She put up quite a fight, and even grew weary enough to sleep, although she refused quite ardently at first.”
“Thank you, J’onn,” Clark says gratefully.
J’onn stops at the entrance to the medbay. “You are welcome. Diana is my friend also.” And then: “If she is asleep, please, do not wake her.”
“We won’t,” Clark promises.
He moves toward the bed, Bruce one step behind, and the door closes after them.
There’s only one chair. Bruce and Clark look down at it, and then up at each other. “Go ahead,” Clark says, and Bruce sits in it rather than arguing or going to stand stubbornly in a corner, which takes Clark so much by surprise that he suddenly isn’t sure what to do with himself. He shuffles his feet where he stands—crosses one foot over the other, and then uncrosses them again to stand tall. His arms hang stupidly at his side—the Superman suit has no pockets to shove them into. After a minute, he opts for crossing them in front of his chest.
Bruce doesn’t comment on his behaviour. Bruce isn’t looking at him.
Clark follows Bruce’s tired eyes to Diana’s unconscious form on the bed. Both of her arms are in splints. It’s unnatural to see her restrained. Of course, not even a displaced fracture could stop Diana from fighting if there were good reason to fight. It hadn’t been easy to get her here.
She had once told Clark that she will fight for those who cannot fight for themselves. Clark thinks that he and Bruce would fight for her if she were not able to, but that she would never allow it.
(Perhaps it’s for the best. He isn’t worthy of fighting for her. It’s his fault she’s here at all.)
He wants to look away from her, but he can’t. He shouldn’t, for that matter. He should face the consequences of his actions—the depth of his error, of his failure.
Diana does not sleep peacefully. Her statuesque features are twisted into a light grimace that tugs at her mouth and eyebrows. Underneath her eyelids, her eyes dart from side to side.
Most days, she glows with an inextinguishable fire—fierce and all-consuming, a force of nature. The strength of a god or a sun burns at the heart of her, tempered only by her goodness and grace and her love for all life. Years ago, when they’d first met, Clark had been drawn to that immediately—her strength, her warmth, her heart.
(Her capacity for understanding. Her tireless kindness. Her boundless optimism.)
It isn’t the pallor of her skin that frightens Clark now—rather, it’s concern that her fire has been dimmed. That he was the one to throw the sand makes him sick to his stomach.
He has spent years of his life learning to control his own powers, but it has usually been his senses—his hearing, his vision—that have gotten away from him. He had learned to be gentle—to weave strands of pastry over an apple pie, to mend buttons, to smooth the feathers of a baby bird—before he’d learned to lift tractors and crush stone. Gentleness had come naturally to him.
It’s been over a decade since he’d so wildly underestimated his own strength. It’s dizzying. It’s terrifying. And Diana—
Diana is in pain, and she is in pain because of him.
“I’ll—I’ll be back,” Clark hears himself say over the thunder of his heart, and then he’s wrenching his lead-heavy feet from the floor and all but flying out the medbay doors.
Diana: then
Her heart is in her throat. She has never known it to beat like this—with such fervour, it seems likely to burn out like an overzealous star. She can hear her breath escaping around it, ragged gasps, too loud in the silence of the temple.
(She has never heard such a sound from her own lips, either. The thought speeds her heart even more.)
She clenches her fingers into fists. She cannot comprehend them. They quake like leaves in a thunderstorm, but aspen retains its solid trunk even when assaulted with treacherous winds, and Diana is unstable to her core. The trembling extends from her fingertips up through her arms, her spine, til her vision blurs. Her limbs tingle with an electricity that numbs her senses. Stars spark at the corners of her eyes.
The man lies in the dust where Diana has him pinned. She pushes the mask from his face.
Eyes like shards of ice meet her own. “Diana,” he says again. His voice is terrible and hoarse and it hurts Diana’s head.
He refuses to stop repeating her name.
“I should have killed you,” she says. She doesn’t know why she hasn’t, yet.
Her mother is dead.
Reality seems a very distant place from here. Everything around her unsettles her mind. She thinks that even if she were to kill this man, she would feel nothing at all. Would he bleed? If her hands were red with it, would they cease to tremble?
“Diana… look at me.”
Diana does. Her fingers shake against the beam she presses across his chest to keep him immobilized. It disturbs her, how much he appears to long for her recognition.
He is a stranger to Themyscira. No man is meant to set foot here.
“You speak as if we are friends,” she says, impassioned. “But we are not friends.”
The man closes his eyes and inhales deeply. She can feel his lungs expand beneath her. She presses harder on the beam and he grimaces. It takes all of her self-control not to scream—over and over, dreadful as a banshee—as if despair alone could strike him dead.
If he did not slay her mother, he will know the traitor who did. Guilt seeps from him like water from a cracked barrel, but—
But if it was not him, and she kills him now, then the answers may die with him.
“I will uncover your truth, intruder,” she tells him, with deadly intention.
He opens his eyes again.
(She has lived longer, but life has taken a greater toll on him. There are lines etched into his face at the corners of his eyes and above his serious brows. He is more weary than anyone Diana has known.)
“You already have,” he says.
“Stop.”
“You know me. Diana, goddammit, you know me.”
“Stop,” Diana thunders. She raises the beam again. She doesn’t know what she wants to achieve other than to make him cease talking. She cannot think, cannot slow her mind from its breakspeed pace.
In the moment she hesitates, someone else crashes through the ceiling behind her.
Bruce: now
Bruce has had his share of doubts about Superman. When he’d first emerged in the news, well—Bruce still believes that questioning the motives of a superpowered alien working as a do-gooder in America had been not only the natural instinct to have, but also the prudent one.
Today, however, Clark Kent might harbour more doubts about Superman than Bruce ever has. Clark has proven his heart a hundred times over—has earned Bruce’s trust and good faith more times than Bruce cares to count.
Clark leaves the medbay in such a hurry that a gust of air follows in his wake; Bruce pushes his hair back from where it falls across his forehead.
He knows that the mental burden of harming a friend will weigh heavily on Clark, but he wishes selfishly that Clark had stayed by his side. Bruce can only be in one place at a time. If Clark is not here, then Bruce must choose to be either with Clark, or with Diana—but not with both.
(It is entirely possible that Clark wishes to be alone right now. Regardless of whether or not that is true, however, it would be unconscionable to leave Diana alone and injured in an unfamiliar bed. Bruce will stay with her.)
He sits silently in the chair until the silence grows deep enough to lull him into a sort of peace—heart rate slow, eyes heavy-lidded and threatening to close.
A minute movement makes his head snap back up from where it had slumped, chin tilted down toward his chest.
Diana turns her face to him. Her eyes are open.
“Bruce.”
The sight of her awake overwhelms Bruce’s tenuous inner calm. He reaches for her hands, but—her arms are in splints. He isn’t thinking. His hands freeze for a moment, and then settle against the edge of the bed.
Diana watches his face pensively for a moment. When she turns her gaze from Bruce to the room surrounding them, though, she frowns.
“You’re in the Watchtower,” Bruce tells her quietly.
“I see that,” she says. And then: “I do not recall coming here.”
“I know.”
“What happened?” Diana eyes the splints around her arms. “What circumstances led me here? Bruce… was anyone else hurt? My memories are unclear. Did I—did I cause harm to anyone?”
Bruce feels sick. “No. Of course you didn't. Diana, it wasn’t your fault. You were conducting an investigation in Gotham to help me.”
“I remember this.”
“You were dosed by an airborne toxin developed by Jonathan Crane. The toxin is a powerful hallucinogen. It…” Bruce grimaces. He should have known about Scarecrow’s involvement beforehand. He should have properly equipped her. Her experience in the warehouse, her injury—all his fault. “It made you behave erratically.”
“I tried to kill you,” Diana surmises.
Bruce smiles wryly. “You did try to throw me through a floor.”
“Do not make light of this, Bruce,” Diana says warningly. “Such an attack could be fatal to you. If I were not myself, you would not be safe in my presence.”
Bruce doesn’t answer.
More gently, Diana asks: “Are you injured?”
Bruce’s back and chest are purple with bruising, but nothing is broken. The damage is insignificant compared to Diana’s own injuries.
“No.”
Diana will guess the truth, but she won’t press him. Bruce is comfortable with that.
“I am grateful to know I did not injure you severely,” she says, and sounds it. “But I am curious, also. Why is it I did not succeed?”
Bruce considers the question. Debates how best to explain the events that occurred without laying blame, and without alarming her.
“I had some help.”
Diana’s eyebrows raise in immediate comprehension and she twists to look about her.
“Clark,” she says, urgency deepening her voice.
“He’s here,” Bruce says. “On the Watchtower,” he adds. “He…”
Bruce doesn’t know how to finish that sentence, but Diana understands.
“I hope that he will return soon,” Diana says, resting her head back against the pillow and closing her eyes. “I would like very much to see him.”
Clark: then
“Stop,” Clark says with finality as ceiling debris cascades over his shoulders.
Diana turns on him whip-quick and thrusts a jagged wooden stick at his shoulder. It splinters harmlessly upon contact.
She isn’t okay. Clark had known as soon as it had occurred; he’d heard the unnatural escalation of her heartbeat from across the city.
Diana isn’t okay, and Bruce is in danger, and Clark—
Clark doesn’t know what to do.
“Diana,” Clark says. He attempts to keep a calm and reasonable tone. Diana is still as she regards him with dark eyes, pupils blown wide with terror. “We can talk about this.”
She doesn’t take to that suggestion at all.
“You,” she thunders. She reaches down to where Clark had cracked the floor upon impact and curls her fingers around the unstable concrete. Clark sees it coming, but doesn’t entire manage to evade it it: when Diana heaves up the flooring where he stands, he’s thrown backward. “You—it must have been—” She halts in her tracks and her gaze flickers back to where Bruce is half sitting, half lying on the concrete. “This was because of you.”
“Diana… look at me,” Clark says, letting flight lift him back to his feet.
Diana ignores him. “You,” she repeats, the word a dagger hurled in Bruce’s direction. “You came here, and you brought another. How many more are you hiding in the shadows?” She tenses her fists. “No matter. I will defeat your army, and you with it.”
On the floor, Bruce says nothing.
“When a leader falls,” Diana says, her words taking on a hue of false calm as she bends to lift a section of concrete large enough to crush a human, “his army will fall into disarray. My mother taught me this.”
Bruce still doesn’t move.
Clark tries again.
“Diana. You don’t want to do this.”
“You do not know me!” Diana screams. Muscles in her arms and shoulders strain as she holds the concrete above her head.
Clark inserts himself between her and Bruce, and lifts his hands—an open-palmed, peaceful mimicry of her own pose. “Okay,” he says. “Okay. That’s fine. But—if I don’t know you, then I’d like to. I’d like to talk. I’d also like for you not to squish Batman with a floor.”
Her heartbeat doesn’t calm one iota.
When Diana looks him in the eye, then, Clark knows beyond a doubt that she cannot comprehend reason.
“I think you have talked enough,” she says fiercely.
If words won’t work, then actions must. Clark intercepts the concrete wedge with his own hands as Diana makes to hurl it downward. All that pressure she’d exerted forced back onto her, and—
—and she hadn’t been expecting it, because she’d forgotten what he’s capable of.
Her scream will reverberate in his ears for hours.
Diana: now
Bruce isn’t interested in speaking extensively, but Diana appreciates his quiet company. After many minutes have passed, she pulls her arms free from where they’ve been braced above her and rests them at her sides. She curls her fingers experimentally, and grimaces when jolts of pain spark in her forearms. Bruce’s watchful eyes miss nothing.
“It does not hurt so much,” she tells him, because it’s not more than she can manage, and because she knows that he worries.
Rather than answering, he reaches to take her hand that lies nearest to him. His touch is gentle, his presence solid and real.
Diana appreciates that solidity now. An unnamed discomfort prickles at her thoughts like an itch she cannot reach, but Bruce’s calloused skin is tangible and anchors her to this moment.
The door opens, and they turn in unison to face it.
In the doorway, Clark freezes. His eyes are clouded with anxiety. He will have known that she had woken: his concern leads him to listen for her heart.
“Clark,” she says, a soft greeting she hopes will convey her tenderness toward him.
In return, he smiles at her like he can’t help it. “Hey,” he says.
Diana pats the sheets beside her. “I was telling Bruce not long ago that I would enjoy your company.”
Unhesitantly, Clark crosses the room and sits down lightly on the side of the bed. He sets a bunch of daisies on the bedside table.
“They’re from my mother’s garden,” he says, gesturing to them as though his statement might have been unclear. “Diana—how are you feeling?”
Her arms are sore, but beneath the physical ache there is a hurt she has not yet been able to name.
“I… I am thinking, for some reason, of my mother.” She closes her eyes and pictures kneeling on a dusty temple floor. The image is vivid in her mind, although she has not set foot on the island for many years. “I have not seen her since I left Themyscira.”
If her mother were to die, Diana would not know of it until the hopeless chill of grief drifted across the world’s oceans and settled itself into her heart. It has not touched her yet, but there is nevertheless a sense of loss biting at her heels.
(Loss?
Diana can never return to Themyscira, and there are no other Amazons in Man’s World.
Perhaps it is also loneliness she feels.)
Clark takes her free hand, and Diana looks up at him. He is tangible and real like Bruce, and he radiates a warmth that softens the pain in her bones.
(Diana thinks that Clark has known loneliness like no other, just as Bruce has known tremendous loss. Neither voices their understanding of her, but it is evident nonetheless.
She is very glad to know them and to count them as her greatest friends.)
“I’m sorry I wasn’t there when you woke up,” Clark says finally.
“What happened was my fault,” Bruce says, his voice quiet but certain. “All of this could have been avoided if I had taken a better approach to this investigation.”
“If your ‘better approach’ involves conducting your investigation on your own, I do not wish to hear it,” Diana tells him firmly. “Our mission is filled with many dangers. It is inevitable that on occasion we will feel the effects of those dangers. It does not mean we should not face them. Even more, it does not mean that we should face them alone.”
She pulls herself up into a sitting position. Bruce’s hand finds her shoulder, providing wordless support.
“I do not want for you to blame yourselves,” she continues. “Neither do I want apologies. I will not tell you of my forgiveness because there are no wrongs to forgive. My bones will mend themselves, and I will be no weaker for it. We function as a team. We will learn to overcome our failings together, and when our next challenge is upon us, we will know even greater strength.”
She sees in their faces that neither will argue her point. Good. Diana is confident that she would win, but she does not desire to fight any more today.
Not even with words.
“Is there anything we can do for you?” Clark asks.
Diana wants only for Bruce and Clark to stay at her side, but they know this already. There is need to ask.
That they have offered her this without question fills her heart with affection for both of them.
“I would like a coffee,” she says, “in an hour, perhaps.”
For now, she holds onto their hands and she doesn’t let go.

MONOCHROME - 4K Time Lapse
[ENG] Often the first thing we dwell upon while looking at a landscape or a sunset is the color of clouds, trees or mountains illuminated by the last rays of the sun. The view focuses on nuances and color contrasts, while shapes and details often lose importance. In this time lapse project, using only monochromatic images, we want to give greater emphasis to the mutability of the clouds that surround the peaks of the mountains, to the shadows that are projected in the valleys with the passage of time. Through this choice, the scene is charged with mystery and enigmatic, thus leaving the viewer space to immerse themselves in the landscape, finding their own inner vision on the background notes.
