What are Standard Book Sizes?
At first glance, you may feel why book size is even, a topic of discussion. But, actually standard book size is important in the publishing industry. It makes it easier for readers to expect from a book. Standard book sizes are the dimensions of the book, specifically its height and width. They may also make it look appealing. Sizes are standardized in the publishing industry to maintain uniformity. '' The Great Gatsby by Scott Fitzgerald is found in the standard book size of ''5x5'' ''8x5'' which makes it portable and affordable for the general public.
Types of Standard Book Sizes
Understanding the different book sizes are important to make an informed decision. Each size serves a different purpose.
Some of the sizes are mentioned with purposes below:
1. Mass Market Paperback: They measure ''4.25x 7'' and they are designed keeping in mind affordability and portability. These smaller size books are great for readers, who are always on the go. They are popular for genre fiction such as romance, mystery and science fiction. A great example is the ''Shining which was published in the compact format.
2. Trade Paperback: They average around ''5x5 '' x 8x5'' These are larger and more appealing than mass market books. These have higher quality paper, and more spacious layout. These books generally offer a more immersive reading experience.
3. Hardcover: Hardcover books range in size from ''5x5 '' x 8x5'', or ''6x9'' Hardcover books can be actually the epitome of excellence. They are ideal for people, who like special editions, and collectors.

As you've asked for asks!:
Do you have any quick-and-dirty book/fic binding methods a terrified-of-failure novice could use to bang something out to get over the first collywobbling step of Actually Doing The Thing? (this may be something I've been meaning to ask for ages)
yes! I absolutely do! in my opinion the best quick-and-dirty bookbinding method is a no-glue pamphlet: you don't have to mess with glue or measuring or cutting anything, all you need is your text, some paper, a needle and thread. you can use the same needle to punch holes if you don't have an awl.
this is going to be a little long but that's because I'm going to write out some fairly detailed instructions for an A5 sized pamphlet. If you don't want detailed instructions and think you can glean the necessary info from photos, just skip to the photos! I've also linked tutorials.
for preparing the text to printing, in whatever software you use (word, libreoffice, gdocs, whatever) make sure your document is set to page size A5. make it look readable. then save as/export that document as a straight-paged PDF. now go to the bookbinder JS tool (https://momijizukamori.github.io/bookbinder-js/), and upload the PDF. source manipulation: none printer paper size: A4 display unit (you can ignore, or choose cm if it gives you anxiety that it automatically displays points) printer type: select single-sided or duplex accordingly* rotate paper: ignore flip on long side: check if you are printing duplex and if your duplex printer flips the paper on the long side page layout: tick folio page scaling: original page positioning: centered ignore the rest flyfleaf: ignore signature format tick: standard signatures. in the length drop down, this depends on the type of pamphlet you are doing. for folio i generally find 4-5 pages per signature a comfortable thickness. if you have 6 whole A4 pages you can still do that as a single signature or you can split it into two signatures 3 pages each. wacky small layouts: ignore this signature info click the generate preview button to see what your PDF looks like imposed! I love this step especially when I'm doing quarto (A6) or octavo (A7) sized books generate output - click this to generate an imposed PDF
for A6 and A7 sized books the instructions are much the same, except for these you make sure the page size is A6 or A7 in your software, and then you choose quarto or octavo instead of folio. for signature length drop down I keep signature length to 1 for octavos typically and 2 for quartos, as this still refers to sheets of paper, and for octavo 1 sheet of A4 paper will turn into 4 smaller sheets in one signature once folded and cut.
*if you don't have a duplex printer you will have to manually turn the paper to print on the other side. I cannot be arsed with this so I bought a printer capable of duplex printing (I didn't have a printer anyway). if you already have a printer check what it can do as you might be surprised and go from there.
now to the pamphlets! you don't need a cover - I have one for the long stitch pamphlet but for the saddle stitch one I didn't bother and just made sure the first page had a title on it. you can always take a different piece of paper and print a cover on or or just use coloured cardstock and create a simple cover, but a cover is not necessary unless you're doing a long stitch pamphlet. all you need to do is to punch holes and start sewing. there are a few different stitch types below, I wouldn't say any of them are more difficult or easier than others, but they do look different so...pick one you like the look of and go from there?

pamphlet stitch (uneven number of holes) I haven't ever done a pamphlet stitch but here's a tutorial for how to do it: https://www.starpointestudio.com/simple-pamphlet-stitch-book-step-by-step/
saddle stitch (uneven number of holes) I realised that what I was thinking of as a pamphlet stitch is actually saddle stitch, as in this A7 pamphlet:

here's a tutorial for how to sew saddle stitch: https://www.bookbindingworkshopsg.com/saddle-stitch-bookbinding-tutorial/ here's a video tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWHkY5jOoqM (sealemon has a lot of bookbinding tutorials and I know many people who like her videos, I used her tutorial for coptic binding way back when I first made a book but I can't otherwise vouch for the quality as I haven't used her videos)
french link stitch (even number of holes) in this one I used french link stitch which I typically use for thicker textblocks that i'm not planning to use tapes with as the french link gives it some robustness, I used it here because I had never done it before and wanted to try it out. I am planning to take these stitches out and re-sew this pamphlet with a cover now that I've found a suitable piece of transformer fanart to use as a cover:

french link tutorial. it's quite long but it has a colour coded bit towards the end that shows how the thread is supposed to link which i find very helpful to visualise: https://www.handmadebooksandjournals.com/bindings/french-link-stitch-binding/
here's a video tutoral from DAS bookbinding (he is my go to for techniques and he has the most soothing Australian accent as well, though fair warning not all of his videos are for beginners): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4ZPdbaM-Ws
long stitch (even number of holes) for this one I used long stitch and I had a cover. this one is my favourite variation because I can make these pretty and simple covers and the stitch looks nice on the outside as well, so this one scratches the 'i want to make a book' itch for me.

here's a tutorial that also includes a how to on a cover that is different from my cover: https://lccprintmaking.myblog.arts.ac.uk/files/2020/06/Long-Stitch-Tutorial-A4.pdf DAS also has a video tutorial for long stitch but it's like three videos long, maybe watch it later :'D here's one I haven't watched but seems decent: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnignTL_wDQ
you can use saddle stitch for this kind of pamphlet as well, that's what I did for dozens of ships and hundreds of souls (https://ashmouthbooks.tumblr.com/post/681587080267202560).
I hope this helped!!

FAIRY
VS YUAN-TI
Fairy! Why is this the size of a halfling? It's small category, which means 2-4 feet (61-122 cm) tall! Other than the size and the ability to make people double/half thier usual size for a minute, they're pretty standard. I think. We are actually given 0 information on them, no description of personality or quirks or anything. Just that they speak languages and sometimes smell like brownies. As is the usual with the modern species, they just described the picture. So...I'm assuming standard fairy stuff, whimsical pranksters and such.
Yuan-ti! They can speak to snakes, resist poison and magic, and see in the dark! Basically people whose ancestors formed a snake cult for power, and...ok look, they're the classic antisemetic lizard people trope. They hide thier forked tongues or snake eyes or whatever their tell is and spy for information or try to influence a city to ruin. Like the newest book did spend a couple words mentioning it's possible for one to be good, but like. they're still the stereotypical snake cult.

I saw someone on the internet ask if the Tintin comics have ever been issued in “normal size” by which they meant the American standard comic book size of 6⅝″ × 10¼″ but in Europe the larger album format of 24 cm × 32 cm is the normal, so much so that American comics get printed at that size sometimes or at least they did in the past. My parents have a pretty comprehensive collection of Carl Barks’s Donald Duck comics at that size.

So last night as I was starting to slowly drift off to sleep, my brain suddenly stuck on something (I promise this is Temeraire related). You see, the Netherlands have used "can't get an army across lots of water" as a basic defence strategy pretty much from Roman times until we got airplanes. The extent of it has varied; sometimes it was as simple as "well the river is too big" (Romans), sometimes it was "if we break this dike right here, the polder will flood and the Spanish can't get at the city". But, from the end of the 17th century, there was a systematic line of forts along the polders and rivers that could protect the province of Holland (specifically), here shown in purple. To the south there's big rivers leading into an estuary, and then it protects the province from invasion to the east. From about 1870, it was replaced by the orange parts, as well as the brownish line around Amsterdam specifically. The yellow area is from the mid-18th century. It is basically a collection of forts, and a series of locks. Together, these can make it so the coloured areas flood to a depth of 30-60 cm. Too deep for infantry, not deep enough for boats. It protects the capital of Amsterdam (with its important harbour), and the big cities of The Hague, Utrecht and Rotterdam.

And again, until we developed airplanes and parachutists and airplane bombs and so on, this worked really well.
Now, since I've been rereading the Temeraire books, the drifting off to sleep made me suddenly realise - how would dragon aerial warfare interact with this? Which morphed into a discussion with my partner (who hasn't read the books) about how Dutch dragons would work.
The first thing I'd like to do is point out the size of the Netherlands, compared to the British Isles and to the United States:
In other words, very small. And, very importantly, it used to be even smaller; a lot of the current land was reclaimed from the sea or large lakes between roughly 1650 and 1950. Most of the west of the country is below sea level, and very wet. A fair part of the east of the country isn't very rich soils and thus not great for farming (until chemical fertiliser is invented in the 1900s) (though they did use sheep dung as fertiliser, and they would almost certainly have thought of using dragon dung as well, eventually).
So I propose that actually, the Netherlands probably would have mostly had middle- and lightweights. There just isn't the area to support a large enough population of heavyweights that they aren't all inbred. My partner suggested there is probably one heavyweight breed, and I like that idea. I think that - militarily - the Netherlands would probably have figured out a strategy for using middle-weights against heavy-weights when they are fighting alone, but preferentially use their middle-weights as support in battles when there is a larger coalition, joining whoever is on their side.
However. There may only be middle-weight dragons, there would be a fairly large number of different breeds, with different strengths. You see, unlike the United Kingdom, where England was mostly united by around 900 CE, and then the Normans strengthened that, or France, which has a similar time scale, the Netherlands is a collection of loose duchies and counties and prince-bishoprics and so on, pretty much until the 1550s. The map pictured is from 1670, after a fair amount of the lands have been united into a republic; there would likely have been more divisions before then.

They get united under the dukes of Burgundy, eventually, but even at that time, it is still the Duchy of Brabant and the County of Holland and so on. But until they come together against Spanish rule, the separate parts regularly fight with each other. Which means that each of them would have their own breeds. (Likely, Holland and Zeeland would have very similar dragons, with aquatic adaptations, who get fed on a mixture of fish and meat; the more inland regions would have more "standard" breeds. To outsiders they all look incredibly alike, but if you mention to someone from Guelders that you cannot tell their Zwarte van Gelre apart from the Brabants Blauwtje, they would be so insulted. Can you not tell that theirs is a pure midnight black while the Brabants Blauwtje is blue? However, the breeds are so alike that most of them follow a continuum. Except the Fryske Grutskens, which looks very distinct). This is also where the single heavy-weight breed comes in - I think it would have been Flanders. Flanders is a part of the kingdom of France (rather than the Holy Roman Empire, which is the power the rest of the motley collection belongs to). One of the counts of Flanders probably got a breeding pair of heavy-weights from the king of France; maybe during one of the (many) revolts. These were crossed with the native middle-weights until a new breed of heavy-weights was developed. And finally, purely for my own amusement, William the Silent/William of Orange, who led the 1548 revolution against the Spanish, would have a dragon that is actually orange. No one knows how or why it came out that colour, none of its progenitors was, it just did and he was named for it (the fact that he is Prince of Orange is a bonus).
I also think that the Dutch would be using dragons for shipping, at least within the country. It is efficient and cheap (especially the dragons that grew up having fish as part of their diet), and the Dutch have always been fans of efficient and cheap and trade. And since it's all middle-weights, that is less scary than heavyweight breeds dropping in. I don't think dragons would be used for passenger-work, but loading the big ships, that can't quite reach the harbour? Definitely. And if you have large-ish ships, but only middle-weight dragons, it's probably much easier to ship dragons across the world, so you can also have a dragon when you arrive at your destination.
To bring it back to the idle thought that started this all - the Waterlinie, aka using the water to prevent invasion. My partner and I think it would still have worked, mostly. The Romans start taming the native European breeds, so they probably could cross the Rhine. In our world, the Rhine was the limes, the border, because they can't cross it in large enough numbers; but if they have dragons and the native Germanic tribes don't, then they can. I don't think they'd have been able to hold the land, not for long, and it's not interesting enough to bother anyway. But after that, when the playing field is levelled by everyone having dragons, the water would still be a workable defence. Yes, the aerial forces can come over and wreak havoc - except everyone has dragons now and so they will try to defend it - but the infantry still has trouble crossing the water. And then, when artillery gets developed, it's still the same. You can shoot at the enemy dragons, they can shoot at yours - and the infantry still can't cross the water. I think an enemy (often the French) would try to use dragons against the forts, before they can inundate the land, but that it wouldn't work as well after.
Anyway, here are some rambly thoughts about Dutch dragons in the Temeraire universe. (Sidenote but I can't make heads nor tails of the Dutch names that are used once or twice in the books. They just don't work.)

Being with cows_chapter8 sketch | Limited edition fine art print from an original drawing. One of my illustration belonging to the book Being with Cows by Dave Mountjoy published by Bedford square publishing. My sketches start life as hand-drawn graphite images made on cartridge paper. I often work on these with charcoal, oil pastel or Caran d'Ache to create the look I'm after. The artwork is then scanned and finessed digitally ready for fine art printing. This process often referred to as Giclée printing uses the highest standard of printing methods to give gallery quality results that maintain all the details of the original sketch. The graphite pencils I use are Faber-Castel, the oil pastels are Sennelier and the china-graph is Caran d’Ache. The inks are pigment based archive quality (100years+). The heavyweight specialist papers I use are of the best professional quality having a wonderful surface designed specifically for fine art drawings and illustrations. Very limited editions with only ten per size printed. All artwork is signed and includes a certificate of authenticity. affenpinscher!!🐾
the affenpinscher is a toy german dog breed of the pinscher type (group of dogs bred as ratters and guard dogs originally). theyre a confident, curious and playful breed that can be stubborn at times, but all in all theyre an affectionate and protective breed!
history
although the exact history about affens is unclear, the most widely accepted story of how affenpinschers came to be was that a man from lubeck, germany, began breeding ratting terriers during the 1600s. although the early form of the affenpinscher chased mice in stables, they soon were bred to a smaller size, with the larger size having gone extinct (╥_╥), and brought into homes during the plague to kill kitchen mice.…ᘛ⁐̤ᕐᐷ
in the 17th and 18th century, a breed dubbed the schooshundrassen ("lapdog breed") became popular in germany which closely resembled modern affens! by the early 20th century, dogs from the same litter could be identified as either schnauzers or affenpinschers depending on their head shape. most mini schnauzer historians trace the origin of their breed back to these affen-schnauzer crossings.
a book on brussels griffons notes, "there has always existed a breed of small, rough coated dogs, as early as the 15th century or before, and they were used for ratters and believed to be the forerunners of the present day affen". its theorised that crosses between the miniature schnauzer, german pinscher and pug may be the mix of dogs that helped create the affen ▽・ﻌ・▽ノ”
appearance
affens generally weigh about 3-5 kg (7-10 lbs) with a height of about 23-30 cm (9-11.5 in) with a life expectancy of 12 - 15 years! it has a wiry, harsh and rough coat which can be short and/or medium in length. its coat is shaggier over the head and shoulders, forming a mane (🦁), with a shorter coat over the back and hind quarters, often described as neat but shaggy :3
following the breed standard, they can come in colours such as black, black and tan, black and silver, red and beige (a mixture of red, brown, black and white hairs)!! black masks are acceptable and (when registered to a kennel) white patches arent penalised but are undesirable υ´• ﻌ •`υ
temperament
affenpinschers are active, adventurous, curious, and stubborn, but they are also fun-loving and playful!! theyre affectionate and protective towards their family <3 it shows little fear to aggressors, possessing a "big dog, small body" mentality, so owners are told to be cautious of their pup provoking a larger dog ,:< they adjust easily to changes which makes them a model dog to travel with U ´ᴥ` U
grooming affens should be groomed twice a week, if theres any mats they should be pulled apart gently using fingers. fur on the head is usually brushed to the front and cut in a v shape to expose the eyes while the hair on the bridge of the nose is trimmed into a fan shape to keep the eyes clear ໒(^ᴥ^)७ the affens coat doesnt grow quickly so trimming an affens fur every few months should suffice
health
responsible breeders will screen their affens for conditions such as luxating patella (kneecap dislocation) and hip dysplasia (abnormal formation of hip socket). theyve also been known to have eye issues and legg-calve-perthes (the ball at the top of the femur loses its blood supply and breaks down inside the hip joint)
affenpinschers, like other short-faced dogs, have difficulty breathing during hot weather if allowed to overheat ╥﹏╥ they may also have dental problems, and other health concerns due to the shortened nasal passages and compressed airways common in brachycephalic breeds. (i actually dont really like short faced dogs dogs due to the health conditions that follow this characteristic but its a 'breed standard' so ㄒoㄒ)
exercise although the affenpinscher is a part of the toy breed which makes them ideal apartment dogs, they are classified as moderately active dogs so they do need exercise!! indoor play, either with their owner or with a toy, is enough to make up a large chunk of an affens exercise. a brisk walk once or twice a day is required and also allows them to socialise with other people and dogs!
training for many years affens were mistakenly believed "too stubborn to train" but the truth is they are very intelligent little dogs, easily bored with repetitive or forced training, and prefer to think independently. while yes, they can be stubborn, they are generally eager to please <3 basic obedience training is recommended, with the affen having to understanding he isnt the leader of the pack. affens get bored easily so long training sessions arent recommended so shorter, more frequent sessions with a trainer who has experience working with toy breeds are usually successful.
fun fact to end off this post: the word affe from affenpinscher comes from the german word ape, referring to the monkey-like face of the doggy!! >w<

𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗢𝗡𝗔𝗟𝗜𝗧𝗬 and Backstory:
Tw Animal Cruelty, Death
Eiji grew up as a child who saw life as very predictable. He didn't know he was an artificial created child... his parents only kept him to experiment if he can be human. He read lots of books and was concerned nothing would surprise him anymore. To not leave him emotionless and bored his parents bought him a pet rabbit, which he got attached to and called Philia. Year passed and everything seemed well, but one day as he ran away from home with his rabbit, because he couldn't stand being ordered around by his parents, because he felt on a higher level than them. He ran into some street thugs which beat him up and killed his rabbit in front of him. This was the first step to top over his personality, he didn't feel sad or mourned the death of his pet, he felt fascinated on what was inside the corpse of it. As he touched the paw, wishing he could hide it away from others, the blood drenched paw shrinked and fell into his hand.
This was the start of Eijis powers. He from then on snucked away from home from time to time to look around at the street crowd. There was a old man who sold jewelry on the streets having a more gothic and dark feel to them. Eiji feeled like seeing death fulllfilled him and if he could in other form show others mortality without being arrested, making his own Jewelry shop could be a way.
As he was old enough he started with that idea to first just craft replicas of skulls and limbs, but they didn't look real enough to his standards. A blind lost person came in, headed the wrong way as Eiji worked on his jewelry. Eiji lured them with his words to his basement as it was the first person he killed by himself, using his shrink power to have a little skull pearl out of the skull of that same person.
From that point on he started his buisness as a seller of Jewelry made out of real human body bones. His targets are mostly poor people, street thugs and more in that direction.
Eiji has no empathy for people, his own desire is to him more important than others well beings... yet he hasn't been caught yet for the things he did. He tries to keep up his reputation and the dorm members do see him as diligent and hard working yes, he fakes a lot of it. He tries to use his attitude to cover up his crimes. If he does fall for someone it would be in a twisted way. Showering them in his jewelry yet not hesitating to make these out of people they care about. Wanting you to stay beautifull to him at any cost... not seeing the you and moreso how he perceives you.
Unique Magic:
Just Right
Can adjust the size of anything, Shrinking and making things bigger.

I got this tray from daiso so I can put manga on top of this plastic drawer so the top wouldn’t convave from the weight.
Its measurements are about 33 by 24 cm.
It can fit 20 volumes of standard sized manga if displayed with the spines out.

With another 10 large volumes of manga in the back (thickness is the same as a regular volume, but height and width are a little extra)

If the front row of manga was flipped to show the covers, it can hold 20 depending on the thickness of the books in the back and about 3 books in the middle. This totals to about 33 volumes.

I also got this plastic bin to put by my desk (with a lid too just in case to protect from the elements) and it fits like 19 volumes (3 were omnibuses and those are about 2 volumes thick)
I basically ran out of space on my bookshelf and wanted a nice way to display some and keep others close by to my desk if need be

I'm seeing some short sighted comments about why not just call it folding it vertically or horizontally. Despite thinking the "hamburger / hotdog style" naming is very silly, it accomplishes something that vertical and horizontal does not, and its easy for kids to remember.
If I say to fold a piece of standard US letter paper in half horizontally; first, is the paper held with the long side horizontally or vertically? Second, is folding horizontally folding the left onto the right like a book or so that the fold line runs left to right? Naming it "hamburger or hotdog" tells you instantly which way to fold it without needing to know which way the paper is oriented. We could swap hamburger with "to make it more square" or "a short rectangle", and hotdog with "a long rectangle". But why when "hamburger and hotdog" are so memorable to kids? (and apparently to adults on tumblr too)
I'd also like to point out that (unfortunately) in the US we use 8.5 x 11 inch paper, that's 21.59 x 27.94 cm. Most other places in the world use A Series paper sizes such as A4 Letter paper. All rectangles when folded in half will change shape along with becoming half the area. There is ONE exception. International A and B Series Paper.
International paper is a very special rectangle that when folded or cut in half doesn't become long and narrow nor short and wide. It stays the same shape, just smaller. International paper is the aspect ratio of 1 by √2 or ≈ 1 by 1:1.41421. This means that A series paper, starting with the largest A0, can be cut in half to make A1 paper and so on with A2, A3, A4, A5... If you have an image or page designed for one size, it can be enlarged or shrunk to any other size with out the need for cropping the image or trimming the paper. You can read more about International Standard paper on Wikipedia.
remember when teachers would tell you to fold paper hamburger or hotdog style. kind of sounds like some fake shit but just another example of burger centric american thinking
