"i've been playin' like tennis," leo added, making a grand gesture to clasp his hands together and swing his arms.

you paced around the lawn, waiting for her to pull into your driveway. she said 10:30, but she's always running late. you can't blame her for it, she's busy. that's what she tells you at least.

headlights flared, and piper's white jeep speedily pulled up to you.

she asks if you're ready to go, and you feel yourself smile at the sound of her voice. she has you wrapped around her finger (whether she knows it or not).

driving to her apartment is a quick 10 minutes, but feels like ages with her hand tracing your thigh. getting inside her door is better, you think. at least she looks at you.

laying in bed with piper at night was nice. she's sweet to you, kissing the dark purple bruises and wrapping her arms around you when you need it.

but it always made you question things. question things like: what are we? what do you think of me? do you think we'll grow old together?

and when do you know if it's stopped being casual— when you've moved in? it's not like you could ask her, because she just smiles and changes the subject. everyone thinks you're dating and you don't have the heart to correct them. it's nice to think about.

you're staring at your disheveled self in the mirror and think: sometimes, you wish you never met her.

what would life be like without piper? this situation with her has been going on for half a year, and she's still shown you no semblance of an official answer.

it doesn't help that you argued in the car. it was about something insignificant to both of you, but you knew there was something beneath the surface she was actually mad about. you chose to not bring it up, and say nothing but a short farewell when you were dropped back off at your house.

seeing your face, she attempts to get up off the carpet where she was sitting, but ends up falling over. rushing to her side, you pull her into an embrace and rest on the floor with her.

Expanding on this cause I can’t get it out of my head.

This thought occurred when I was thinking about how much flack Piper gets for like… being ‘whiny’. For having a ‘no one understands me’ attitude. How it seems like she doesn’t care to understand the world around her. And the thing is, she doesn’t want to. Piper wants nothing to do with the Greek world. And it makes so much sense when you look at it from her perspective.

Her whole life things have been going wrong, being put in school after school, having to deal with things no one else sees, having a reputation as a thief even when she, technically, didn’t steal. Questions about her absent mother going unanswered. Her father being distant. 

And then she meets Jason. Jason, who was nice to her and patient where he didn’t need to be. Who made her feel like she was on cloud nine and like things could finally be going right for her.

But then she wakes up. She wakes up and he doesn’t remember her. Barely knows her name. And then she finds out that monsters are real. That she's a Greek demigod. Her whole is starting to make so much sense but also none at all. And then to have a girl you barely know sit you down and tell you that your memories and feelings for your boyfriend are fabricated? To have her ask you if you know his parents? What schools he went to? Something as basic as his last name? And then to realize that, for the life of you, you can’t answer any of these questions? Of course she wants no part of this! I mean her life was already bad, but now it's gone from bad to worse. Of course she wants out. To have a normal life and get away from all of that.

And then there’s Percy, who's the EXACT same way. 

Percy wanted nothing to do with the Gods! Or Kronos! Or Zues’s lightning bolt! He was a scared kid who wanted to go home to his mom. 

Except his mom wasn’t there, so he HAD to do it. 

Also, it's been a hot minute since I read TLT so I don’t know if it was already in the book. But I love how it took Grover telling Percy the quest could potentially save his mom for Percy to agree to go. It really drives home the fact that he’s only doing any of this for his mother. That for the first book/season, Sally’s the reason he keeps going. Because yeah, as the story progresses Percy gains his own reasonings for willingly playing a role. But in the beginning, EVERYTHING he did was for his mother. 

I bring this up because in the beginning, Piper was ALSO only there for her father. To a point where in her own POVS she talks about how she’ll have to betray them in order to save her father. It’s obvious she doesn’t want to, but Piper, like Percy, is willing to go to great lengths in order to protect her prominent parent.

Percy’s also the same in the regard that he doesn’t want to be part of the world around him, and for a while, he truly doesn’t care. He learns the language, yes. But throughout the first series, a lot of his knowledge is need to know. He learns what he needs to in order to get through his quests, nothing more. Because he doesn’t WANT to. Percy’s very obvious throughout the first series that he’s only there for his mother and friends. 

I also think it’s nice how they added Percy feeling like something was wrong with him in the show. How he’s practically begging his mother to do something because he feels like he needs help. Because Piper’s also gone her whole life thinking something was wrong with her. That she was being sent to all these schools to get fixed only for nothing to work. Both of them start off feeling like lost causes. 

Another thing is that in the beginning they were both just scared. Percy was attacked by his teacher, made to feel as if he was crazy, watched his mother get crushed by the minotaur, and then had to KILL said minotaur. And then when he gets to camp, where he's supposed to be safe, he finds out that he has to go on this life threatening quest people have warned him about. That Zues, king of the gods, is this close to smiting him down because he thinks he stole his master bolt. 

And then there's Piper, who was attacked by nature spirits, hauled all the way to Long Island, found out her boyfriend forgot about, found out her memories of the last few months were fabricated. Has been having dreams of her father being in trouble and being told she’d need to betray someone in order to stop it. And then, after being at camp for five minutes, goes on a quest to save a god. Not just any god either, but Hera, queen of Olympus.

They are both VERY scared when they have to do this, both reacting differently. Percy being angry and opposed but still being brave, Piper being reluctant and scared but still being brave. They're both scared and new to this but are still doing it to save and help the people they love. 

And that's what makes them so similar.

You know no one ever talks about how similar Percy and Piper are…
