Yes sir @charlesstaley LIFTING TECHNIQUE 101: THAT'S ALL BACK, BRO! ππ»ββοΈ This is perhaps the most common critique of my deadlifting, and while my technique certainly isn't "perfect," this particular critique is flat wrong, and here's why: ππ»ββοΈ Whenever you perform any exercise, some muscles (the agonists(s) work dynamically to overcome a resistance, while others (the stabilizers) contract STATICALLY to prevent unwanted movement at other parts of your body so that you are stable enough to overcome that resistance. Example: When you curl a barbell, the elbow flexor muscles (including the biceps) contract dynamically to move the weight, while almost every other muscle in your body will contract statically to "brace" you as your biceps curls the bar. In this scenario, the biceps is the prime mover or "target" muscle. You'd never say "That's all shoulders bro!" or "That's all abs bro!" because as you curl, there's no dynamic moment of those muscles. ππ»ββοΈ Watching my deadlift here (474x3 from yesterday's training), notice the complete lack of spinal movement as my hips extend to overcome the external load. YES, the back muscles are active, but only statically. The prime movers here are the primary hip extensors (hamstrings and glutes). SO: not only is my deadlift not "all back," it's actually almost NO back. This is why, despite continuous heavy lifting since the early 80's, I have no back issues whatsoever. ππ»ββοΈ Questions?
