St. Albert the Great Bishop and Doctor of the Church 1206-1280 Feast day: November 15 Patronage: Scientists and Philosophers

Saint Albert heralded from a wealthy and powerful German family. In 1223, he was ordained a Dominican Friar. He was a man of great intellect, teaching and writing about science, philosophy, and theology, to name a few, at the University of Paris and Cologne. One of his famous students was St. Thomas Aquinas. They both probed how faith, reason, and science could coexist. He worked to unite the East and West at the Council of Lyons. He suffered a slow slide into dementia till he died in 1280.

St. Albert the Great (2001) • Al Henderson • Bronze and Concrete • 45" x 30" x 20" • “There are several Saints named Albert. St. Albert the Great is the patron saint of scientists. Lost in the contemplation of the natural world, Albert is depicted here as a young teen, 15 years of age, studying a bird held waist high with wings extended in the form of an inverted 'V'. His interaction with the bird captures his personal experience when he walked through a field with dogs where falcons flew overhead and scattered nearly dying birds that he could catch with his hands. The sculpture illustrates how learning begins with a local point of interest and represents the St. Albert community as one that promotes life long learning.” • ABOUT THE ARTIST: Al Henderson - Figurative sculptor, Al Henderson, obtained his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Alberta, 1997. His artwork often explores realism. Creating movement and paying careful attention to details, Henderson captures the life within each of his sculptural pieces. Before & After. The pandemic didn’t age me. Hyperparathyroidism, hypercalcemia, new forms and locations of arthritis, plantar fasciitis, depression, anxiety, new allergies, the death of loved ones, and unemployment did. (Y’know, on top of the medical issues I had in the before times.) But I’m getting help for the things that can be helped, I have a team of doctors watching the rest with me, and I have new saints in heaven to pray with and for me. God is good. All the time.
