HEY
THE AUTHOR OF SEARCH AND RESCUE WOODS POSTED HER UNPUBLISHED MANUSCRIPT TO THE r/STAIRSINTHEWOODS SUBREDDIT
This is FUCKING huge because something a lot of people aren’t aware of is there was supposed to be a SAR book. Unfortunately, syfy forced the author to give up adaptation rights in order to make the butcher’s block season of Channel Zero, so it never got published.
So now, she’s released it for everyone!
READ IT HERE

Not Wendigoon starting a new podcast talking about my favorite reddit story of all time and not even bothering to link TO THE DAMN STORY.
Anyway read the Search and Rescue Series: https://www.reddit.com/r/StairsintheWoods/comments/14t0qdq/stories_masterlist_20/
#wendigoon#creepcast#the stairs in the woods#search and rescue series#this is not a callout post whatsoever even if he does give me bad vibes

All I can think about is the stairsinthewoods Reddit thread so this is terrifying
obsessed with those stone stairs and archways in the middle of the woods that remain standing after the rest of the building has fallen to ruin

eregyrn-falls replied to your post “eregyrn-falls replied to your post “Goddamn man, fall must be coming...”
I read them after the first post or two a couple of years ago, but very recently i went back to the original post on reddit, and found out that the OP made like 8 posts in total. (i think they also created a subreddit just for that? r/stairsinthewoods ? i'll look it up.) i also found that the comments often had some other similar spooky contributions. in the last post the OP mentioned working on a book, and like, *grabby hands*.
Dang, didn’t know there was a whole subreddit. But yeah, I read all of the original Search and Rescue series and it was so good. Perfect mixture of inexplicable supernatural shit extremely realistic down to earth detail (I would bet that the OP was either an actual Search and Rescue Officer or if not, did a solid amount of research before pretending to be one.)
It also nails something that I think is really key in scary stories, (and even more important in ones like this, that try to pass themselves off as something that may have really happened.) It knows just how much detail to give and how much to leave out.
Give the reader too much detail in a horror story and you lose the shadows, you risk over-explaining and taking away the fear of the unknown. But give too little and it starts to feel like there’s nothing actually there. These stories show just enough specific things that you can imagine all sorts of strange and frightening explanations, without actually giving them to you, and that’s hard to do.
The Channel Zero season based on it (”Butcher’s Block”) has nothing to do with it at all, is completely different in setting, story and tone. The only flimsy connective tissue it has linking it to the Search and Rescue stories is the image of a staircase in the woods. Even then the staircase isn’t really mysterious and sinister itself the way it is in the original stories -- it’s mostly just a way of getting to another world.
(Plus it’s in a park instead of the woods which is just way less scarier. If I was in the deep woods and saw a staircase leading nowhere I’d be frightened and intrigued. If I was in a park and saw one, I’d think “huh must be a piece of public art, they should really consider putting a railing on it though kids might try to climb it.”)
That said, even though it has nothing to do with the original story it’s a really great story on its own and does some very interesting things. I might have to talk about it more on this blog sometime because I keep coming back to it over and over.
