In ~these times~ it is important for queer people to be reminded of what "coming out" originally meant. "Coming out" did not mean telling all of your co-workers something super stigmatized and vulnerable about you, wearing your queer status on your sleeve in public, informing the police or government institutions about your sexuality, or even telling your parents. "Coming out" meant venturing out into the queer community; being among other queers as a queer yourself.

Coming out isn't about telling the entire world when doing so is not safe for you, it's not about arming your enemies with information they could use against you. No, coming out is about making a fulfilling queer life possible for yourself through participation in the queer community. It is about escaping the restrictions and dangers of the cisgender heterosexual world by rooting oneself more deeply into the queer one.

And you can always do that. No matter how oppressed we are. No matter how much the culture shifts and policies are enacted to terrorize us. We are always able to be ourselves when we are amongst each other. And living our queerness has always been a collective social project, not just a matter of personal exposure.

The whole notion of being docile around a police officer is an utterly terrifying norm. This isn’t the fucking hunger games. Citizens don’t need to be sweet to you, especially when you’re fucking wrong and they know their rights. They shouldn’t have to cower and fear and put their tails in between their thighs because the police academy has a tendency to accept shit heads who need to make up for their dominance complex.

I'm still not over one of Trump's lawyers going to court this past week to defend Trump's executive order against "gender ideology," only for the judge to ask very plainly for the lawyer to explain what gender ideology is and the Trump lawyer to respond "its whatever the president thinks and I'm loathe to speculate what exactly that could be" and the judge was like are you fucking kidding me you're a lawyer and you can't explain things your client has said to a judge???

not to go off about names vs. nicknames vs. rank in MASH but the ways that characters talk to/about each other is really fascinating in regard to who uses which when:

henry only ever calls margaret by her name (as opposed to major or nurse; i don’t think he ever calls her hot lips) once in “hot lips and empty arms” and margaret almost always says colonel, doctor, or his full name

henry calls pretty much everyone by their last names except for radar and frank (and sidney iirc) but these are for opposite reasons

potter on the other hand refers to people by both their first and last names (though he himself is strictly colonel or doctor, with the exception of hawkeye addressing him as sherman in “potter’s retirement”) 

see also henry in love vs. potter’s retirement in terms of titling episodes

hawkeye almost always refers to himself as hawkeye unless he’s introducing himself as benjamin franklin pierce for the sake of a bit/scheme

trapper refers to himself as trapper (the various “uncle trapper” jokes) but tends to introduce himself as john

we don’t even know radar’s first name until season four (quo vadis, captain chandler?) and even then we only ever hear it when he’s on the phone trying to get things out of I-CORPS (see: out of sight out of mind)

i have nothing to add about hot lips vs. margaret discourse given it’s a horrendous nickname but obviously the cession of using hot lips marking part of the goal of giving margaret a more nuanced personality

charles refers to pretty much everyone by their last names (with the exception of margaret who is usually major or her name) unless he wants something from them

i had a 4 hour drive today so i put on the revenge of the sith audiobook and the part where palpatine tells anakin to kill dooku came on right around the time that i saw a cybertruck and for a brief and beautiful moment when he said "do it" i had the urge to ram my honda full on into that shitty ass car

i promise you that nobody has ever in their life thought "wow, this other person inserted absolutely zero friction into my life. they were so efficient and worked so hard to get out of my way. i love them for that." not EVER. not ever ever. if you sublimated your own personhood that hard they didn't even think of you at all. the people we remember in life are the people who got in our way a little, and broke up our routine, who asserted their perspective and gave us something new to think about or feel. that's how we form real relationships -- by inconveniencing one another and actually having a marked influence on one another's lives. to be loved is to be annoyed. and to be annoying at someone. and to be thankful, at the end of it all, that somebody broke you out of yourself for a moment and got in your way.

it's great to be considerate and obviously not every interaction is gonna be special, but you can't go through life as if every person is a cashier that you don't want to get mad at you for asking for an extra bag.
