Lisa vs. Malibu Stacy [S5 E14] (dir. Jeff Lynch)

Is there anything more dangerous than a group of eight year old girls (and one 40 something man) who want to get their mitts on the latest must have toy? No, there isn’t. In fact they’re so pumped up the sight of a new hat changes their target from Lisa Lionheart back to Malibu Stacy. Kudos to Kathleen Turner who embiggens her role with a cromulent performance and some of the series best line readings.

Was thinking about that Joke from Lisa Simpson vs Malibu Stacy where Stacy Lovell is talking about her previous husbands and how besides ken they're all action figures. And that got me thinking about how Ken was/is kinda lame sometimes so OF COURSE kids are gonna pair Barbie up with other boy dolls and action figures besides ken (or other barbies).

And that got me led me to 2 things. One was just straight up googling "Boy dolls better than ken" to no real results. The other was remembering how since I didn't have any kens back when I only had my moms old dolls and how i'd pair the girls up with some 12 inch Gi Joes I had, and Anakin Skywalker from EP 3, and what ever other same or similar scale action figures I had (and some times with the other girls).

Then when I started buying my own dolls and actually got some Ken dolls I like never rarely if ever paired them up with barbie and they usually just dated each other (and borrowed Barbie's clothes of course). Now it's kinda 50/50. Some of my kens get paired with barbies and other kens, some just barbies, and some just kens.

Episode #95

Lisa vs. Malibu Stacy Season 5 - Episode 14 | February 17, 1994

Hot damn, what a GREAT episode. SO fucking good. This is the one that starts with Grandpa giving the Simpson family their inheritance early so he can enjoy their enjoyment of it. Lisa gets herself a talking Malibu Stacy doll, and is horrified by the terrible sexist messaging her stock phrases convey to impressionable little girls like herself. She finds the creator of Malibu Stacy (no longer part of the company after a hostile takeover/buyout thing) and convinces her to put out a competing doll with a lotta LISA style shit in it. Meanwhile Grandpa takes a job at Krusty Burger, where some ultimately pointless but still pretty funny and memorable gags happen. Seems like a parody of that schmaltzy McDonalds commercial from the 80s “The New Kid” about a old timer working at McDonalds and it being cute and life-affirming. Makes me shudder.

Anyway, this episode has a lot of extremely funny stuff in it. Remember Smithers computer with the Mr. Burns message!??? That’s in this! Remember when Grandpa is like “EVER SEEN A BURGER THAT CAN TAKE A BITE OUT OF YOU???” That’s in this! There’ other stuff! This exchange made me lose it, which I don’t remember ever laughing at before:

Lisa: This is great. They're really going to sell our doll! Stacy Lovell: Well, it wasn't difficult. I just told them who I was, and who you were, and they couldn't resist. Lisa: Really? Stacy Lovell: Well, I didn't tell them who you were.

Also the bit about her funding the viet cong and the Kent Brockman taking cues form his daughter for news stories, damn. GREAT fucking jokes. Maybe the ONLY truly unkind gay joke I can think of in the classic era of the show (where you can’t explain it away with context or characterization or whatever) is a joke in this, where as an example of Lisa’s radical leftism run amok is the fact that she made the family march in the gay pride parade, with Bart holding up a newspaper where he’s on the front page enjoying gays. It’s a really funny screenshot, but it does stick out as an unnecessary pot shot that you’re just not used to pre-season 9. Also, I can actually speak on this with A LITTLE BIT of experience: I related to the Simpsons A LOT when I was roughly Bart’s age, the Simpsons house was nice and big and comfortable like my house was, and I lived in a small backwater city like Springfield. So I can completely transport myself to a place and time when attitudes about gay guys was mostly unaccepting and hateful, and I personally wouldn’t have been caught dead at a gay pride event for my own homophobic reasons and fear of being beat up by PCP addicted klansmen. But I DID watch a gay pride event on public access once and there were so many titties. Uncensored titties. It was one of the greatest things I ever saw. EXTREMELY formative moment. So, I’m guessing there’s more to this story. Bart probably developed a thing for girls that don’t wear make up and have short hair. I’m guessing.
