Chapter 6 Fieldwork: Ethnicity and Nationalism
The older I get, the more I understand about my ethnicity and where I come from. I was in foster care since the age of one but was adopted by my foster mom in first grade. I was raised around only African American Culture. Specifically in Prince Georges County and the D.C Metropolitan area. Growing up as an African American in America my ethnicity has always been broken down to my skin color. Since I've started college Ive been reconnecting with my biological family that has Jamaican heritage that is on my mothers side.
Tumblr media
With my biological family, recently I learned that my grandfather immigrated to America from St.Elizabeth Parish of Jamaica in 1981. He came to America first to adjust and then brought my grandmother and my mother and her siblings in 1983. My mother was 12 years old at the time.
I would definitely say my Jamaican family has embraced American Nationalism. My grandmother worked in the white house until her retirement. On my moms side my family always calls themselves "Jamerican" because they have embraced the American lifestyle and successfully assimilated into African American culture. Here is a picture of my grandmother and George Bush. She has since retired.
Tumblr media
I believe my family upkeeps the culture while being in America through the cultures food and music. When we are together we are listening to reggae or dancehall. I think that is what keeps them connected to our home country. I am now learning more about my hometown and their everyday life back in Jamaica now that Im older.

Maybe an unpopular opinion but I wish they would finally stop only making movies and series of the tragic life of Sisi (Empress Elizabeth in Bavaria) and look for other interesting royal German/ Austrian or German speaking ladies/ queens like for example Queen Luise of Prussia (and her sister Charlotte, both being from the house of the dukes of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and having very interesting lifes) or Isabelle/ Elisabeth, called "Isabeau de Bavière" (from the House of Wittelsbach-Ingolstadt), wife of the so called mad French King Charles VI, mother of King Charles VII and Queen Catherine of England (first wife of Henry V of England, then married to Owen Tudor and mother of Henry VI).
Or St. Elizabeth of Thuringia/ Hungary who lived a life for the poor after she lost her husband, Ludwig/ Louis IV, the landgrave of Thuringia, in the 6th crusade (1227) and is among the most renowned Catholic saints.
I would also name Catherine the Great of Russia (Sophie of Anhalt-Zerbst) but there is a Russian series about her life and the one with Helen Mirren.
Then the famous St. Hildegard of Bingen, a famous and influential woman of the Middle Ages to this day in so many ways. Yes, there was a German movie about her some years ago but I don't think that it is widely known.
Then "Liselotte von der Pfalz" as Germans do call her, the Madame Palatine, wife of Philippe of Orlèans, brother of King Louis XIV aka the "sun king". She wrote a tremendous amont of letters in her life, leaving behind so much information about the court of the "sun king" that historians can only be thankful to her. Yes, there was the series "Versailles" but that wasn't quite an accurate one.
At least Maria Theresia of Austria, mother of Queen Marie Antoinette and King Joseph II got a series some years ago, cause let us face it, that woman was a great one. As a child it always impressed me wildly how many children she and Luise of Prussia got. It seemed insane to me.
With this I want to say: There is more good stuff about great German/ Austrian/ German speaking ladies out there. Wayyyy more.
And it angers me that it does not get depicted.
Only our tragic or as "weak/ bad" considered ladies do get some recognition like Sisi, Marie Antoinette or Tsarina Alice of Hesse. That is sad.

January 10, 2021
As I went on the hunt for a few easy letterboxes.  I guess I made a boo boo.  I ended up in the wrong place for this, but what a beautiful place.  Sudbury MA.
Tumblr media
This was a great letterbox.  I found it so peaceful and I just sat there and took it all in.  It was an easy find.
About Mount Wadsworth Cemetery, dates back 1835.
Once the land of Israel Howe Browne (1791-1879), the first land was set aside as a burying ground in 1835 when several of those who were buried in the crowded old burying ground at Sudbury Centre were moved to this location. These included Edwin Howe Browne, son of Israel Howe Browne, and three Richardsons who had died as early as 1833 according to slate markers which have well preserved weeping willow designs. Three tombs were built on the slope of the hill of the original cemetery from 1836 to 1839 made from granite from Nobscot Hill. In 1842 the cemetery was enlarged in a northerly direction for the lot of Jerusha Howe who left money for an elaborate monument to mark her grave. Isaac Browne finally consented to sell additional land for cemetery expansion following the approval of Dr. Goodenough whose land abutted this area. The cemetery is named Wadsworth for Captain Samuel Wadsworth, the leader of a group of 26 colonial soldiers who were massacred by the Indians near this location during King Philip's War in 1676. There was a monument erected in 1852 in remembrance for Capt S. Wadsworth, Capt. Brocklebank and Lieut Sharp in the cemetery. It sits at the end of the road and is surrounded by an elaborate iron fence and a granite post and wood fence. This cemetery sits on 6.36 acres. The earliest death date is 1833.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then continued on my letterboxing hunt. It was getting pretty late so this would be the last one of the day. This was actually a fun place to find.
St. Elizabeth Chapel - The historic, little stone chapel of St. Elizabeth of Hungary is located at 440 Concord Road, Sudbury MA. The Chapel was designed and built between 1912 and 1914 by Ralph Adams Cram, the world famous architect of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City and many other churches, as a place of worship for himself, his family, and his neighbors.  For more info: https://st-elizabeths.org/history-chapel.shtml  As interesting as this was, never could find the letterbox. It got dark real quick, and I started to get a little creeped out. Probably had to do with being in presence of old tombstone's.  (If you know what I mean)

Little Daredevil (Batfam X Blind!Batsis!Reader) *PLATONIC
Characters: Batfam X Blind!Batsis!Reader
Universe: DC, Batman
Warnings: Death of parents, mention of injury resulting in blindness (vague) Mention of fighting and blood.
Request: Hi could you write a fic where the reader is pretty much like a younger Matt Murdock and is also a vigilante (Daredevil pretty much) but gets adopted by Bruce Wayne (was a vigilante before getting adopted) and she hides it from the bat family and they are trying to find out who the new vigilante is and then something happens where she has to fight without the mask and they’re surprised that she can fight so well because she’s blind and then she like proves herself by fighting one of the batboys and winning and then they let her join them on patrol and stuff with like fluff at the end? Sorry if this is really long and specific.
Tumblr media
When you’re born and raised in Gotham, no matter your position in this world, there are rules that are silently implanted into you at an early age, purely to stay alive. Find a group, family or not, that you can trust and rely on. Be cautious of people you don’t know, especially those in power, or more power than you. Keep your cards close to your chest, and last but definitely not least, don’t let your weaknesses be easy knowledge. A lot of people found it easy to follow these laws, though a lot of people also adapted in a selfish, cruel way, making the life of everyone else in Gotham even harder, making a vicious cycle. You weren’t like that. You weren’t able to be like that, even if you wanted to be, and it was all because of your blindness.
You hadn’t been born blind, your loss of sight was the result of an accident when you were younger, the accident also rendering you an orphan, placing you in one of the many orphanages in Gotham. Despite this, you deemed yourself lucky- you weren’t dead, and you’d gotten placed in one of the few actually genuinely good homes, that had avoided corruption, though it rendered it low on funds and low on staff, and due to that, you didn’t receive much care or support in your process of understanding and adjusting to your disability. So you had to adapt by yourself. Teach yourself. And you did.
You had honestly surprised yourself by how well you had done. It took months of training your mind and other senses, developing an acute awareness of your surroundings that at times felt stronger than when you were able to see, though for a while you just presumed it was because you had developed a comfort and confidence in your capabilities, until one day when you were walking home from school, and heard someone far away whispering, describing someone. “Yeah that’s the one, the one with tan skin and dark hair and green eyes.” The voice muttered. You paused in your steps, wondering why you could hear them talking. They were coming from your left, but that was where the street was, and you could hear cars passing, and you could tell the cars were closer than the person. You didn’t know who they were talking about, that was, until they spoke again, this time being another person.
“Yeah, that’s Wayne’s kid. Imagine the ransom we’d get for the little brat.” The whispered, and then you heard a new sound close to them. It sounded metallic, and in a way, it sounded… sharp. A knife. Your heart started pounding as you focussed on your senses as close as you could. You knew who they were talking about- Damian Wayne, a boy in your school that was the son of the billionaire. Where was he? Was he near you? As you were thinking this, you heard footsteps behind you, coming close, and brushing shoulders with you in the crowded streets.
“S’rry.” They muttered, but you knew his voice- it was him. Damian. Their target. You automatically reacted by grabbing his arm, and he stopped, seeming to flinch at your grip.
“Sorry. Um…” You tried to think quickly. “I’ve lost my bearings. Is there any chance you know which way to St.Elizabeth’s or where abouts I am?” You asked, though your speech was rushed and quick, clearly panicked. Damian remained quiet for a moment, before taking your wrist, and moving it to his upper arm for you to hold, and silently started walking with you. You lifted your stick, holding it close to your chest. As the crowd around you seemed to thin as you didn’t feel as compact, you leant over a little. “Um… I don’t mean to panic you, but I heard some men talking about you… don’t cross the road, okay?” You warned quietly. You felt his body shift, like he was turning his head, but he kept walking, before he stopped. You felt the dip in the path, telling you that you were on the corner of the street, waiting for a time to cross. Damian grabbed your hand again, this time moving it so you were just holding his hand, and you could feel his slowly raising pulse, and you had an idea of what he was planning to do, and then it happened. He tugged you along, and you both took off in a dash. You weren’t sure how you were able to keep up with him, especially without running into anything, anyone, or even tripping, but you did, until the boy came to a halt, and you heard a buzz, before the sound of a mechanical gate opening in front of you, before he starting tugging you along again, this time being slightly uphill.
“Steps!” Damian warned, and you felt you start to slow in anticipation, and you took a large stride, feeling the step against the front of your shoe, and you took a little jump of faith to make it up them, and you got lucky, before you heard a door open, Damian pulling you inside before slamming the door shut behind him.
“Damian? What’s going on? Who’s your friend?” A deep mature voice asked behind you, and a voice you knew from several news interviews. It was Bruce Wayne. You were in their manor. You never thought you’d step foot in such a fancy pants place, especially entirely on accident and just trying to do the right thing, but little did you know that now that you were in, it was going to be nearly impossible for you to leave. Why? Because the family took such a shine to you that Bruce adopted you, making this fancy pants manor, your home.
The move did cause a slow down in you exploring your capabilities and these heightened senses you’d become aware of since you now had to learn the layout of this giant house. Even over a year later, you still got lost sometimes or bumped into something, or had one of your family grab you and divert you just in time before you bumped into something, or them. However, recently, these incidents had declined in regularity, and now you were pretty good at moving around the house, or even Gotham, unless you were distracted. You were so good that now you only carried your cane as an accessory and to not raise suspicion, though you didn’t use it at home, and you had forgotten it sometimes when going out. You were so good at using your other senses that seemed more advanced than they should be, that your hardest task now was actually acting blind… and hiding your new hobby.
It had started not long after you had moved into your new home. You needed some time alone, and took a different, longer route home, mostly you test your abilities, and during it, you distantly heard something. A scuffle. You hadn’t hesitated to help Damian, so why would you hesitate this time? Except this time, you’d walked into an alleyway quietly, in front of you hearing two men- you could tell the voices were not coming from the same person, and focussing harder, your senses told you they were low to the ground, and one was above the other, and then the metallic smell of blood hit your nose. “Please stop- I don’t have any-” One of the men begged, before there was a sound of a thud against skin. You crept closer, gripping your cane, raising it slowly, finding depth in where the noises were coming from, before slamming the cane down, and you hit something, or someone, and the scuffling stopped. There was movement again, but the sound of a body being moved and someone getting up was heard. You were scared, before you heard a sigh of relief. “Um… thanks.” The man you heard begging, answered, telling you that you got the right person.
“No problem… let’s get out of here before he wakes up.” You said as calmly as you could, turning and making your way out the alley with the stranger, before parting ways silently, and you walked home. You couldn’t stop thinking about what you did, an incredible sense of pride in you. You saved that man. You saved someone! All by yourself! You didn’t run, you didn’t ignore it, you did something! You had more of a spine than most of the people in Gotham, and that meant more than something! That started your new ideas. There was Batman, and his Robins… maybe you could do something similar?
You’d really developed since then. Your… little outfit was nothing more than layered black clothing with a bit of padding in the odd place, some gloves you’d modified to protect your fists but do damage to whoever you punched, though you preferred the use of one of your old canes- well it wasn’t an actual cane, it was when you were at the orphanage and they didn’t have the money to get you a proper one, so instead they took the wooden handle of a broom, removed the end and put a tennis ball on it instead. You removed the tennis ball, wrapped it in duct tape so it wouldn’t splinter, and used it to keep some distance between you and your enemies, and you’d actually gotten very good at fending off attackers with it. Lastly, to ensure that you wouldn’t be identified as the Billionaire’s blind daughter, you took one of Bruce’s many scarves and made it into a makeshift mask that covered the top half of your face, totally covering your eyes. You always tucked the stray end of the scarf into the back behind the knot you made- you learnt to do that the hard way. You’d been working extremely hard. Being on high alert when you started these nightly… patrols, seemed to boosten your senses. Sometimes it was overwhelming, hearing everything in the city at once, but you quickly learnt how to focus on the area around you, or certain sounds nearby. You learnt the sound of a gun being loaded or it’s safety being taken off, the sound of people running, and how to identify key people purely from other factors, like their voice, the sound of their footsteps and how they walked, and if you got close enough, how they smelled. And you learnt depth perception with your new sense. You were extremely accurate with your hits and dodges, rarely missing, the result usually being because they ducked themself. And you were doing it all solo. Your family had no idea about what you were doing, usually being too busy or too naive to notice. It was probably for the best- you had grown close with them for individual reasons. Tim helped you study, Jason was usually the one pulling you out of the way from a danger you couldn’t see, and Dick would step in and keep the press busy since they were sort of obsessed with you since you’d been adopted since you were ‘different’ from your other siblings, and Damian would also sometimes say something to them so he made the headlines, not you. Bruce was never thrilled about it, but he was silently happy that the entire family were protective of you and wanted to keep you safe and do their part. You were sure if they knew what you were doing, they’d collectively lose their minds.
Another night fell onto the manor, and after a few hours of sleep, your alarm woke you up. You always excused yourself for early nights, telling your family it was sometimes hard for you to fall asleep so you gave yourself a few extra hours to settle. You got up quietly, going under your bed for your little outfit, putting it on piece by piece, before putting the scarf over your face, tightening it and securing it, before sneaking out your window. You’d found that your room was right bellow the conservatory that had a metal framework, and you had it down to a T for knowing where to step to avoid the glass, and so after scaling down, you made off into the night.
It was strange being out in the middle of the night in Gotham, alone. While you were always on high alert, your heart always pounding, always expecting a missed step or to run into the wrong people… your mind had a full map of the city. You knew your way around it near perfectly, you knew all the shortcuts, where to avoid, where you were safe, and where to hide when you needed to catch your breath. You also knew the best places to hang out and to listen for trouble. One was on top of an apartment complex, and so you went there. You stood with your hands on the wall of the building, head tilted down as you waited for sirens, the sound of gunshots or screams… you focussed in more, listening for conversations between thugs for future plans, police radios… sometimes you heard maniacal laughter that you knew belonged to the Joker. You always stayed away. But tonight, you didn’t hear any of that. What you heard was the movement of the gravel behind you.
You turned quickly, your self taught training going into full swing. You heard their foot slide against the ground roughly, evening their balance. It sounded heavy- probably a man, a strong man, and the positioning told you he was preparing for a fight, and when you heard a whoosh coming your way, you ducked, and you sensed the feeling of air going over your head. You grabbed above you, grabbing his arm, and you kicked into his leg while pulling him towards you, knocking him over onto the ground. He grunted as he hit the ground, confirming your suspicions.  You took a step back, preparing your wooden cane in case he decided to get back up. “Stay down.” You ordered. “You follow me here?” The most logical question would be to ask who they were- but that question showed weakness- that you didn’t know what you were up against, and so you had to bide your time, and use pointers to find his identity. It was what you usually had to do. You heard him slowly get up, and you stepped back again to give yourself more space. He wasn’t bleeding, you knew that, since you didn’t smell blood.
“I’ve been trying to track you down for a while. You’ve gotten yourself quite the reputation.” The man answered you, and you immediately knew who it was. Batman. You’d heard his voice sometimes- usually from reporters in the short moments he’d been seen, or when giving instructions to get people to safety. You immediately felt a bit better, and slowly lowered your cane, holding it at your side.
“Thanks. Hope it’s the good kind of reputation.” You commented. He didn’t respond this time. You heard the gravel move again, and you held your hand out, and he stopped. The sound told you that if you reached out you could poke him in the chest. “Just because I’ve stood down doesn’t mean I won’t kick your ass if you don’t give me space.” You warned. You heard him sigh.
“Take the scarf off.” He instructed.
“No.” You answered bluntly.
“Would it make you feel better if I took mine off?”
“I’m blind, you taking yours off doesn’t mean jack.” You pointed out, going to take another step back, before he grabbed your arm, pulling you towards him, and trying to lock you in his arms. You stomped down on his foot, and elbowed him in the ribs, and despite his grunts in pain, he didn’t let go, and you managed to get ahold of your makeshift mask and pull it off your face. You turned to him and tried to grab it back, but he held it up, and examined it. “Give it back!”
“This is mine.” He commented.
“No it’s not!” You tried grabbing it again, this time able to grab it, and you tried to feel of where the knot was so you could put it back on properly, before he stopped you, now more gently grabbing your hands. You didn’t look up at him, hoping he hadn’t seen your face yet.
“Y/N… How long have you been doing this?” He asked, but this time his voice sounded… different. A little lighter, not as gravelly, more natural… and a voice you recognised far more easily. Your adoptive father’s voice, bruise. You looked up at him. “How… Y/N, it’s not safe for you to be out here.”
“I’m doing fine. I’m able to put up a fight against you, and I’ve managed to take a few guys down.” You excused defensively.
“How? How are you able to do this?” He questioned. It honestly sounded rude, but you knew him, and you knew he meant it out of genuine curiosity and worry, and you knew there was no way you were making it out of this without giving him answers.
“When I went blind… I had to train myself to use my other senses. No one else helped me. I picked up that my senses were a bit more heightened then they should be. It’s how I was able to hear those men planning to hurt Damian, when we first met. I’ve been working on them, pushing myself, seeing what I’m really capable of. I have the entire city on a map in my head, I can tell exactly where people are, giving me depth and and I can hear when people are reeling up to hit me thanks to my hearing. I can smell when people are hurt, I’m like a sniffer dog. I’m still working on how to use touch- but I’ve been doing this for a while now and I’m doing really well! I have this weird… gift with my senses, and I want to use it for good!” You explained to him.
“Still… you can’t do this alone. You can predict a gun, but you can’t predict a gun that already has it’s safety off.” He pointed out.
“Then be my eyes! I won’t get in your way! I promise!” You begged. He huffed. “And you can’t be exactly mad about me keeping this as a secret- you’re batman! Wait, are the others- are the others Robin?” You asked.
“Yes, yes they are…” He confirmed. “I should have known better than to expect a member of this family to have a normal hobby… alright, how good are your senses then?” Bruce asked. You put your scarf back on your head. “I’ll get you proper gear- knee and elbow pads aren’t going to do anything for-”
“Shh!” You shushed him, trying to focus on your surroundings… It was a weekend, so people were out partying, so you had to listen past that… focus in directions you knew danger usually came from… and then you heard it. “Joker’s right from here… he’s near the coast, he’s near water.” You pointed in the direction.
“You can hear that far?”
“Harley isn’t with him… he’s alone I think. Maybe a few goons, but they’re quieter than him.. I can hear his laughter quite easily, so I tend to stay away from his direction.” You told your adoptive dad. “I don’t expect you to bring me along for this, but can I at least start doing nights out with you and the others?” You asked.
“Only after I get you the proper equipment and protection, then you can do patrols in pairs.” He confirmed, and you couldn’t help but do a little excited fist pump. “Just be aware that means I have to tell your brothers about this as well.” He pointed out, before you heard his cloak pick up wind, and then disappear, leaving you on the building, and you processed what he said. Oh they’re gonna lose their minds.
Hope you like it! If you have any questions, please send them in!

Saint Elizabeth of Hungary - Feast Day: November 19th - Latin Calendar - November 17 - Ordinary Time
This young and delicate princess made herself the servant and nurse of the poor. Let her example teach us to disregard the opinions of the world and to overcome our natural hesitation, in order to serve Christ in the person of His poor.
The Charity of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary
By Edmund Blair Leighton (1853-1922)
Saint Elizabeth is remembered for her charitable works, especially for the establishment of hospitals. Today, dozens of hospitals and medical centers are named for her, several of them founded by the Sisters of St. Francis. Elizabeth lived at a time when the combined disasters of climate, war, pestilence, and poverty caused great suffering, and she became devoted to helping those who had nowhere to turn.
Elizabeth was born in Hungary in 1207. Her short but fruitful life lasted 24 years; she passed away in Marburg, Germany in November 1231. November 19 is the feast day of Saint Elizabeth celebrated by the Church.
She began life as part of the Hungarian nobility, daughter of King Andrew II. At age 14, she married the 21-yer-old Ludwig IV, of Thuringia (Germany). He was appointed regent of Meissen and the East Mark and who soon became employed by Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II as a soldier and diplomat.
Elizabeth was religious since her early years, and Ludwig supported her in this, including her acts of charity. While he was away for missions under Frederick II, Elizabeth took charge of local affairs and distributed alms in all parts of her husband’s territory.
To take care of those who were both sick and destitute, she had a small hospital built below the Wartburg castle, with twenty-eight beds. Her personal touch was evident there: she visited the patients daily to attend to their needs; at the same time she aided hundreds of poor people daily through giving food and other supplies.
Ludwig died on one of his military campaigns, succumbing to illness not war wounds. Their third child was born shortly after his death.
Elizabeth then became associated with the Franciscans. They established their first settlement in the region in 1221 and she obtained spiritual instruction from them. The ideals of St. Francis appealed to her: chastity, humility, patience, prayer, and charity. Because of her royal position, the vow of poverty that Franciscans took was not easy to pursue and her retention of funds made the charitable work she pursued more fruitful; over time she distributed everything she had. It was with her financial aid and spiritual support that the Franciscans in 1225 founded a monastery in Eisenach. Conrad of Marburg, who had been held in high esteem by Ludwig, became her spiritual adviser. It is said that he treated Elizabeth with all the severity of his nature, for which he had a considerable reputation, but through this led her to new levels of sanctity and charity; after her death he was very active in her canonization.
On Good Friday, 1228, in the Franciscan house at Eisenach, Elizabeth formally renounced the world; she received from Conrad the dress of the Third Order of St. Francis. In the summer of 1228 she built the Franciscan hospital at Marburg and on its completion devoted herself entirely to the care of the sick, especially to those afflicted with debilitating and disfiguring diseases.
Conrad had written in support of her canonization a letter, of which a portion is reproduced here:
Elizabeth was a lifelong friend of the poor and gave herself entirely to relieving the hungry. She ordered that one of her castles should be converted into a hospital in which she gathered many of the weak and feeble. She generously gave alms to all who were in need, not only in that place but in all the territories of her husband’s empire. She spent all her own revenue from her husband’s four principalities, and finally she sold her luxurious possessions and rich clothes for the sake of the poor.
Twice a day, in the morning and in the evening, Elizabeth went to visit the sick. She personally cared for those who were particularly repulsive; to some she gave food, to others clothing; some she carried on her own shoulders, and performed many other kindly services. Her husband, of happy memory, gladly approved of these charitable works. Finally, when her husband died, she sought the highest perfection; filled with tears, she implored me to let her beg for alms from door to door. Good Friday of that year, when the altars had been stripped, she laid her hands on the altar in a chapel in her own town, where she had established the Friars Minor, and before witnesses she voluntarily renounced all worldly display and everything that our Savior in the gospel advises us to abandon. Even then she saw that she could still be distracted by the cares and worldly glory which had surrounded her while her husband was alive. Against my will she followed me to Marburg. Here in the town she built a hospice where she gathered together the weak and the feeble. There she attended the most wretched and contemptible at her own table.
Apart from those active good works, I declare before God that I have seldom seen a more contemplative woman.
Before her death I heard her confession. When I asked what should be done about her goods and possessions, she replied that anything which seemed to be hers belonged to the poor. She asked me to distribute everything except one worn-out dress in which she wished to be buried. When all this had been decided, she received the body of our Lord. Afterward, until vespers, she spoke often of the holiest things she had heard in sermons. Then, she devoutly commended to God all who were sitting near her, and as if falling into a gentle sleep, she died.
Prayer to Saint Elizabeth
Almighty God, by whose grace your servant Elizabeth of Hungary recognized and honored Jesus in the poor of this world: Grant that we, following her example, may with love and gladness serve those in any need or trouble.
In the name and for the sake of and through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Hey guys,
So I went at all 14 parishes, for the first time in 2019. Most of my touring was for work, I worked with a research lab for a while. However, I did go touristing for fun.  Here’s a recap:
St. Thomas
I went to St.Thomas several times in 2019 primarily for the beach.
St.Thomas
St. Thomas actually has a nice beach that isn’t too popular and it’s pretty easy to get to. Besides the last time I went, the water was beautiful. To get to the beach, I’d have to take a Morant Bay coaster from Downtown for $250 then take a Lysson taxi from Morant Bay town centre to Lysson’s beach for $100. To get into the beach it’s $300, it was $250 earlier this year and if you’re a UWI student it’s free but you’d have to get the pass from SAS before going there. Read more about that here: 5 Things You Can Do With Your UWI ID.
This is a beach in St.Thomas. It cost $700 JMD from downtown to get there and go back.
You’re allowed to carry food on the beach and that’s usually what I opt for but there is a cookshop directly beside it you can opt for. For a reasonable $2000 or less I could pay for transportation, access to the beach and food.
Me at Lysson Beach in September.
Portland
Portland is my all-time favourite parish, I hope I can live here in the future. I went twice in 2019 for different reasons.
The first time was for work. I was working side by side with the vector control team for one day for research purposes. Since I was working, I didn’t really get to explore but I did go to a new place which was Snow Hill. I bought lunch from a roadside shack selling Jerk Chicken and festival. It cost under $500 and it was really good.
Port Antonio
I asked some school girls to take my picture after a long day of work.
The second time, I went on a road trip with some friends. I did way more exploring here because, well, I had the time to. I spent maybe around $2500 on transportation, access to the beaches and food. My first stop was the Folly Ruins.
Posing in front of graffiti at Folly Ruins
This was free to explore. You can read more about the story behind the Folly Ruins here.
The next place I went to was Blue Lagoon, this was also a free option. I’m not that great of a swimmer so I didn’t venture off into the approximately 200ft lagoon.
Blue Lagoon, Portland Photo by: K.S
After Blue Lagoon we went to Winnifred beach, it was my first time there and I absolutely loved it. The water was literally transparent. There was somewhere to buy food but I was saving my money for Boston jerk pork. There was also no cover charge but they asked that you contribute any amount. I did, maybe about $200.
Winnifred Beach
After Winnifred Beach we went to Boston Beach. It was my second time there. This time I decided to try the jerk pork and I fell in love. I don’t remember how much I paid for it, maybe around $600 for the quarter and I paid for some festivals. They gave and charged me for an extra one I didn’t ask for but I can’t get mad in Portland. It wasn’t enough pork but I got what I paid for, next time I’ll stop being cheap and buy more. While I’m not 100 per cent sure of the cost for everything, I know for a fact I spent less than $1000 though. To get into Boston beach, I believe was $200 JMD.
Boston beach
  St Mary
I never stopped and did anything in St.Mary in 2019 except drive through but I was there so it counts. In 2018 I went to Hamilton Mountain and the surrounding environs to help with vector control activities and lab work.
St.Ann
I went to St.Ann once in 2019 for work. I was helping with training at Shaw Park. Food and transportation was covered by the company of course so I only paid my regular fare to go home from work after we got back to Kingston. I did charter a taxi to get to the lab at 6am though but that wasn’t from my pockets either. Everything would have totalled $900.
Little photoshoot at the end of the day
I drove through St.Ann another time but that was also for work.
Trelawny
I went here for the first time. We stopped at a gas station right across the road from the sea. Really excited to come back here and find hidden gems. No one really speaks about Trelawny and what it has to offer but I’ll be figuring that out in 2020.
St. James
2019 was also the first time I went to St. James. I went maybe three times, all for work. It was also the first time I went to Montego Bay and as a Kingstonian, I think Mobay looks much better than Kingston.
Only picture I took in St.James
Transportation was covered by the company, I spent maybe $500 on some food when I was in Mobay.
Hanover
I spent a whole lot of time in Hanover, okay I spent maybe 3 days but it was a lot of time to me. It was the first time going to Hanover and yes guys, it’s real and it’s beautiful. Hanover reminds me so much of Portland with its beauty. I went here for work and so transportation was paid for.
some interesting plants i found on the job
I wish I was able to explore the parish more but I only went from the hospital in Lucea to Cacoon Castle to help with vector control and gather things for research.
This was the view from the hospital and no this photo was not edited
We stopped for gas so I ran across the road to take a photo with the sea.
Westmoreland
I also spent a lot of time in Westmoreland for work. I mostly stayed in Negril but went to a couple other more rural places to collect data. When it rains over in the west, it pours. I learnt how to walk on steep surfaces in the pouring rain and not slide on swampy lands. Of course, transportation was paid for but I did spend some money on a box food and Popeyes in Savanna La Mar. All of that would have been maybe $1000 total.
We stayed in a quaint little resort across the road from the beach.
Pure Garden Resorts where I stayed. They’re very reasonable.
After work, I’d go over there for dinner. They’re not cheap, I bought some fried chicken strips and fries for maybe $700. I liked it so I got it the next time I was there and drank water. I save a lot of money just drinking water. The company would have helped with some of the cost of food on these trips though.
Burbon Beach
I liked Bourbon beach, not just because there was no entry free but the sunset was beautiful.
St. Elizabeth
I went to St.Elizabeth both for work and fun. While we mostly drove through St.Elizabeth I did get stranded outside Santa Cruz. Driving through St. Elizabeth to get to the rest of the west for work was always the most tiring part of the journey. It felt never ending.
A very blurry picture of me outside the “Welcome to St. Elizabeth” sign
Right at the border of Westmoreland and St.Elizabeth, you can get seafood or you can go up the road to Middle Quarter for shrimp. You’d spend no more than $1000. I spent nothing because I brought snacks and protected my pocket, even though I was travelling that time for work.
I also went to St. Elizabeth for a wedding. It was right outside Treasure Beach. I was tagging along with my mom so of course, I didn’t have to worry about transportation.
Treasure beach
It was a wedding so food and drink were covered of course.
Manchester
I spent quite a bit of time in Manchester, primarily Mandeville and Porus. This was again for work and so transportation and food was primarily taken care of. I had fun walking up the steep hills and steps in Porus and Mandeville, it was a good work out.
Clarendon
Clarendon was mostly a drive through parish for me this year but I did stop at the Juici Patties in Toll Gates a couple times for a cheese patty.
St. Catherine
St. Catherine was another drive through parish for me. Hopefully I can explore this parish more this year.
St. Andrew
This is where I spent most of my time. I attended workshops, award ceremonies, movies, anything. You can read about it here:
I Went Out For Restaurant Week Alone and This is What Happened
A Review of Pizza Please’s Jerk Pork Alfredo Pasta
Back on the Rack Review
Review of the Healthy Hair and Beauty Expo
My Experience Attending She Speaks; A Necessary Safe Space for Women’s Voices
Review of the “Securing the Bag” Millennial Mixer
I did touristy things too like go to Devon House and explore Gordon Town for the first time.
When it comes to St.Andrew, I get most of my fun from exploring restaurants. I went to South Avenue Grill for the first time 2019 for my solo birthday dinner.
Always looking for new experiences and restaurants in this parish. St. Andrew touring isn’t really considered travelling per say so I’ll leave the budget out of this one. I should mention that I got a free movie pass from work, entry to some workshops for free and free food so I still saved money.
Kingston
Ironically, Kingston was parish 14 even though I’m so near to it. I did a couple things in Kingston like boarding the coaster to go to another parish, attending an art festival, attend workshops like
What You Need to Know About Investment from the Adulting 101 Conference
Takeaways from the Adulting 101 Conference
What You Need to Know About IPOs
Fare to go to Kingston and get home is capped at $200 and I didn’t pay for any of the events I went to.
My favourite thing about Kingston 2019 was seeing Waterfront and the Art festival. I sampled all sorts of wine from ackee wine, to sorrel wine and passion fruit wine.
Posing with Melisa Kerr’s art Downtown
Well, there you have it, a brief synopsis of what I did in all 14 parishes this year. I didn’t spend much out of pocket which was primarily because of the nature of my job. There are ways to cheaply tour Jamaica, the places I did go for fun didn’t break the bank either. I find that carrying food cuts down on the cost. You just have to do some planning. You can check out: How to Travel in Jamaica on a Budget
How I Toured the Island in 2019 Without Breaking the Bank Hey guys, So I went at all 14 parishes, for the first time in 2019. Most of my touring was for work, I worked with a research lab for a while.

section three - faces x places
Tumblr media
Photograph taken in Tokyo, Japan.
This last section of the portfolio communicates my interest for photography. Taking photographs is a common occurrence in my household as my dad used to take photos for people’s weddings and my brother currently works as a photographer. I believe capturing images is a great way of translating emotions, events and beauty through the lens and having an interest in photography has made my visions clearer as a filmmaker.
Tumblr media
Photograph taken in Tokyo, Japan.
one: keeping it in the family
Here is a series of photos that show the people most important to me; my family. Besides landscapes, they tend to be my biggest subject as everyone in my family is relaxed and used to being in front of a camera.
Tumblr media
This is a photo of my younger brother on his 15th birthday. I decided to include this in my portfolio as it speaks a lot for new beginnings and the process of growing older just in one photo. I like the contrast in the photo and the way the black and white hides the fact that this was taken during the day. It also showcases another interest of mine; baking. During my bronze Duke of Edinburgh award three years ago, I made cake decorating my chosen skill and from then have been creating culinary masterpieces for friends and family.
Tumblr media
I currently live in North West London, but before I used to live in a small town in Surrey. The thing I miss the most is the woodland area near my house and the long walks I used to take my little sister on. This photo captures this activity.
Tumblr media
This is my dad in our local world foods supermarket that we call the “lollipop shop”. When my siblings and I were kids, we used to go here and get free lollipops from the owner of the shop and have christened it the lollipop shop ever since. I like the perspective in this photo and the bright colours of the supermarket shelf.
Tumblr media
In 2016, I had the fortune of going to New York on holiday and have dreamt of going back there ever since. The people, the food, the buildings, the art; everything about New York appealed to me during that summer. We stayed in Brownsville, Brooklyn but would spend everyday in Manhattan exploring the sights. This is a photo I took of my older brother beneath Manhattan Bridge, across from which you can see the New York sky line and Brooklyn Bridge. This photo captures the essence and scale of Manhattan bridge whilst featuring my brother being the photographer that he is.
two: the motherland
Two years ago, I went on holiday to Jamaica which is where my grandparents were born. It had been over a decade since I went their and experienced the beautiful landscapes and culture the country had to to offer. Here at just a few of the wondrous sights.
Tumblr media
This first photo was taken outside our house in St.Elizabeth. It’s a silhouette of my dad sat on a wall and I upped the contrast on VSCO to get a detailed and vivid outline of him and a tree against the background of the sea and sunset. Jamaica truly is a beautiful country with so much to offer and this photograph is one of the best I took on this vacation.
Tumblr media
We also visited a crocodile sanctuary and had a boat trip down Black River. Jamaica is home to a lot of exotic wildlife such as hummingbirds, mongooses, crabs and of course, crocodiles.
Tumblr media
This photo was taken on the beach beside our house in St. Elizabeth.
Tumblr media
This photo was the view from my bedroom window on the the morning after we arrived in Jamaica.
Tumblr media
One of my favourite things about this holiday was the wildlife. Beside our accommodation were two beaches that were home to a multitude of hermit crabs, that I would pick up and take into our house.
three: through my eyes
Lastly, these are some of my best photographs taken from my perspective. All of these were taken on an iPhone 8 and edited using the app VSCO.
Tumblr media
This photo was taken in a place called Bell House, which was the location of my first short film that I made with the British Film Institute. The academy course ran from September till December and during that time, I had the opportunity to make a short film with nine other young people from around London. This experience certainly gave me the confidence to make my own short film and sparked my interest in filmmaking even further. The house itself was beautiful and had some much character to it, giving a lot of aesthetically pleasing photo opportunities.
Tumblr media
I did dance for GCSE and whilst waiting for an exam, I captured this image of my friend in our school gym. This was taken during the day, using only sunlight to illuminate my friend’s face. The way this turned out in comparison to the actual environment blows my mind and the simplicity of the photo is satisfying for the viewer.
Tumblr media
This photo is of my friend’s eye and was taken on an iPhone 8. Again, natural light has been used to illuminate my friend’s face, whilst capturing the details of her eye. I’m proud of the quality of this photo and feel it’s hard to believe that it was taken on a phone camera.
Tumblr media
As an electrician, my dad used to do a lot of work for coffee shops, including this one; Prufrock Coffee on Leather Lane. The contrast of colours in this is highly satisfying and I felt this photo could be found on Instagram or Pinterest.
Tumblr media
Despite the simplicity of this photo, I felt obliged to include it in my portfolio because of the stark detail shown within it. The shadow of the glass to the dew coating the cold exterior of it, everything about this photo reminds me of something that could be found in film noir. The lighting used in this was a simple table lamp and again, my smartphone was also used to take this photograph.
Tumblr media
The thing I enjoy most about photography is the way I can manipulate images to look how I want, turning them from a basic photo into something that has depth and emotion. This was taken in my mum’s kitchen and is of a bunch of lilies. I believe the light source was day light, but could easily be a spotlight from the kitchen. The juxtaposition between the complexity of the image and the reality of the setting is what makes it worthy to put into this portfolio.
Tumblr media
Finding interesting, cohesive shapes and angles is something that draws me towards photography. A simple council flat can look like a skyscraper with the right angle and retaining the sky’s colour is the main focus of this photo, as the windows also reflect a rich blue tone to them. Originally, this was black and white, however I decided that having it in colour adds more depth to the photo.
