After the beauty and quiet of the Catlins, I’ve made it back to the city and I’m spending a few days in Dunedin.
I started at the railway station which, despite being the largest in NZ has only one platform. It is no longer used for regular passenger services but you can take scenic rail trips from there. It’s a beautiful building both inside and out with stained glass windows and a mosaic floor so it was nice to have a mooch around. I was quite excited when I got there as there was a red double decker parked outside and I thought I might be able to get a brilliant photo for my brother. Alas and alack, there was a modern coach parked in front of it and the bus left first so although I do have a heritage bus in my photo, it’s not quite perfect.
I then went to St Paul’s Cathedral - the southernmost Anglican cathedral in the world. It’s very modern inside and since it was a sunny day, it was a lovely place to get a break from the heat.
There are lots of lovely buildings in Dunedin so I spent some time walking around and familiarising myself with the place. I also managed to resist the prawn cocktail crisps on offer in the Scottish gift shop (yep, they are so proud of their Scottish heritage here that they have a shop that sells souvenirs of a country 18,000 miles away). My hostel has a garden though, so I decided to make use of it and enjoy the first warm evening I’ve had in ages.

Anglicans celebrate Eucharist in Catholic cathedral
Anglicans celebrate Eucharist in Catholic cathedral
Last Sunday Dunedin’s Anglicans celebrated their Confirmation Eucharist in St Joseph’s Catholic cathedral after a fire damaged St Paul’s Anglican cathedral earlier in the week.
Almost immediately after the fire, two Anglican inner-city churches – All Saints’ Dunedin North and St Matthew’s –  reached out with offers for St Paul’s to join them for worship last Sunday morning.
But the new Level 2…
