star trek update time. last night we did voy's "before and after" and "real life."

before and after:

i liked this one actually although kes with TOM PARIS was a huge shock. but it actually works well because then it has you asking well wtf about b'elanna and she's. dead.

also shoutout to when janeway died right in front of chakotay (again) and he did the thousand yard repression look. king

i also like kes's new hair, even though i prefer her old hair. it helps her LOOK older. i bet it was easier to pull off than those ears, too

i did NOT like the EMH's new hair. put that cueball back so help me

it's fun to see how he swaps names depending on his mood, although i think it would be neat if he settled on a permanent one

okay, i think the problem i have with the holodeck, other than holodeck episodes usually not being my cup of tea, is that we have a horrific double standard about how real the people in it are based on what vibes we are feeling that day. the doctor is obviously a real person (but the version of him that got killed by the borg in the tng movie is obviously not). that holo-village from ds9 was full of real people. but what about sex slave deanna from tng? is she real? are the combatants in worf's klingon training program real? when they die and come back when he reboots the program, do they remember doing that? do they feel pain? the aborted holo-julian from his eugenics episode, is he real? how about the npcs from picard's mystery novels? moriarty (of all people) seemed to become real, and his gf was real, but was he real before he figured out the holodeck? what separates real holopeople from not real ones?

what about this little girl who was created to enrich the doctor's life and then forced to DIE HORRIBLY because b'elanna decided he was doing the enrichment wrong? is she not real, too? the emh grieved her. her holo-family grieved her. is their grief real?

like, we could easily get to the bottom of this. we could make some fast and quick rules about which holopeople are sentient. it would make for FASCINATING sci-fi, the way the debate about data's sentience made for great TV in tng. and yet we just...don't look directly at that issue at all. it's based on vibes and whatever whoever is writing the episode feels like. it's ANNOYING and it's LAZY and it takes me out of every single holodeck scenario

like, either the girl is not real, which means all of this was to put the EMH through simulated grief, or she IS real, and they created this little girl to murder her. what the hell

anyway, huge bummer of an episode. i hated it <3

being forced to sleep on my back (upon penalty of pain) when I’m used to sleeping primarily on my belly feels like torture, add on to that being exhausted but still needing to Do Things bc all i did was flop around all day trying to let myself heal and you have the perfect storm of insomnia that is DEFINITELY NOT helped by shuffle continually giving me songs that give me All The Emotions so I’m laying here in a bed that’s 60% pillow, staring at the ceiling having feelings about fictional characters when I should be attempting to sleep

apocalypse rising (ds9):

this one was...fine. i think it speaks highly about ds9's storytelling that i'm always really excited by the big action-y episodes in voyager and to some extent tng, but in ds9 they're just kind of boring, because the character and plot stuff is way meatier.

i did NOT like the klingon look on odo and obrien. 196 was way too late to be putting these men in what was all but blackface. HOW DID NO ONE NOTICE THE IRISH ACCENT? there are not any real klingons out here doing that. also, there are white klingons. there were white klingons in tos AND ds9. there's no excuse to be doing this

sisko looked great though. wow <3

i think worf got called a pussy again in this episode. can we please give it a rest

i do have one nice thing to say about this episode and it's that i did like the callback to some very obscure tng lore. that episode WAS the first time they ever mention the delta quadrant, there WAS a wormhole involved, and this was all long before the show voyager was a twinkle in paramount's eye, and i'm pleased when little stuff like that gets remembered. i bet there were trekkies on emssage boards in 1996 going Well Actually Why Don't We Remember Season 3 of TNG Why Can't They Get Back That Way and this did at least. answer the question

where to begin...oh, actually, the mostly-naked women with no lines. and it's like haha funny! jesus fucking christ. also haha funny! when they hit themselves or other people. so true! hilarious!

and how stupid also not to simply take them by force when, if this was happening in the alpha quadrant, janeway would make a few phone calls, starfleet would call ferenginar and be like "get your people or we will," and then they would have to leave. jesus christ

and then when neelix is actually making some progress he breaks immediately...come on. this was such a stupid problem with a hundred easy solutions

the icing on the cake though is that the ferengi ruined their chance of using the wormhole to get home...like obviously we know this episode isn't gonna be it, but in-universe it's incredibly frustrating, and demoralizing, and it feels like such a cruel thing to have happened for no reason when the rest of the episode is haha funny! there are a million ways you could have done this without it feeling so mean-spirited - in reality, a setback like this would weigh everyone down for days, if not weeks or months, but i'm sure it will never get mentioned again

anyway, horrible episode, i hated it
