ok but why is syncthing actually really cool
bc like rsync can sync files one way (if it changes on the server, the client updates the file, but if the client changes the file, it doesn't get changed to the server)
but syncthing can do it both ways, which is actually super cool
plus it's ridiculously easy to use, it even has a web UI (and GTK if you aren't able to use the web UI). it can search for devices anywhere on the local network. you can pair a device just with a QR code. it can compress things when sending over the network. it continuously watches the FS for changes and automatically immediately syncs them. and a ton of other cool stuff
it's perfect for me cuz I have two computers, a home laptop with no battery and a netbook with a barely usable battery. and I can easily sync files between them
and the best part? it's completely open source.
like I was not expecting any open source software to be this perfect of a solution for what I needed. bc when you want to sync things your immediate thoughts are some cloud service like OneDrive, which is proprietary. and Linux ports of the OneDrive API are shaky at best.
or rsync, which only works in one direction. and it needs at least some CLI experience.
or some sort of network drive, which doesn't actually store the files on the client.
but like this is perfect. plus it saved me from catastrophic failure when my SSD died.
anyway I'm not sponsored or anything just wanted to let people know that syncthing exists and y'all should totally try it out if y'all need it.

Mount Remote Directories with SSHFS on Ubuntu 24.04
This article explains how to use SSHFS to mount remote directories via SSH on Ubuntu 24.04. SSHFS (SSH Filesystem) is a filesystem client that lets you mount a remote directory over SSH (Secure Shell) on your local machine. This means you can make the files and directories on a remote server as part of your local filesystem. This provides a secure way to access sensitive files, giving you a…

[Another text from Charlotte made his screen light up.]
"I miss the way you were before. You've been so off recently., Are you sure nothing's happened?"
[She anxiously waits for an answer.]

“Nothing's wrong. Again, don't even worry.”

how i make gifs with only free software
this is adapted from what i did on macOS for years; i now run desktop linux due to planned obsolescence / apple's addiction to waste. if you use macOS, homebrew was my real introduction to using the shell and linux-like package management, and look at me now. every single gif i've made here (#spicagif) and on my sides @chongmiz and @buwanbyul use this method.
three programs mentioned here are command line-only, but optional; all this actually takes is VLC and GIMP.
acquire video 🏴☠️. my bittorrent client of choice is transmission, and yt-dlp (cli) is great if what you want is on youtube or vimeo
take screenshots in vlc by holding down the snapshot hotkey (sft+s is default); i tend to reduce playback speed for action sequences. you can also extract frames with ffmpeg (cli) which is a vlc dependency that should install automatically with any package manager, but it only makes sense if you've exported a clip of the part you want. both options are annoying.
open these screenshots as layers in gimp and edit away. my order of business is usually scale -> crop (save .xcf) -> sharpen -> color. this will give me a repetitive strain injury because i have not found a solution other than clicking every layer and hitting ctl+f
if you need subtitles or a watermark, which i do more on my k-pop side @buwanbyul, i recommend @animstack (yes an actual official linux-adjacent blog!)
i do not actually export gifs, they are webps:
honorable mentions
sshfs: i don't keep video on my laptop or like attaching external storage to it, so i torrent straight into my headless server over ssh. i realize normal people do not have this but this is how i "stream" from my own media library
pcmanfm: i browse files with ranger, but handling that many images without thumbnails is foolish. pcmanfm is very lightweight and is meant to replace more established file browser GUIs like thunar and dolphin
edit 2025/02/26: just mentioning @vlc-official @gimp-official

media server dot jpeg. Load bearing ethernet cable.
I toyed with setting up SUSE MicroOS but I have no flash drives for Ignition configuration, so I'll try that tomorrow. In the meantime, normal tumbleweed, mount hard drive, sshfs to my laptop. That's a media server! Saves me from accidentally yeeting the hard drive because I forgot it was attached to my laptop. I could also use minidlna to serve to VLC on android if I wanted to.

gnome-boxes vms using virt-manager bridged network
I started with using gnome-boxes.
it was flaky
i've started primarliy using virt-manager ( virsh --connect qemu:///session to be able to talk to the domains)
i wanted to share services from my hypervisor host (ubuntu 20.04 currently). primarily, because i'm still on old versions of libvirt/hypervisor kernel/whever else virtiofs isn't available to me without extra work, so i want to nfs share host files because sshfs doesn't support symlinks.
i found a couple of really good explanations of the process.
stack overflow ( https://bit.ly/47xx3S0 )
blog post ( https://bit.ly/3H9myJJ )
unfortunately that blog post going through the specifics of creating /etc/qemu/bridge.conf explicitly sets readability of the file to 640. AND thanks to bad error handling in virt-manager i was being told when trying to start the domain.
"Error starting domain: 'utf-8' codec can't decode byte 0xab in position 159: invalid start byte"
thankfully i came to my senses and started with virsh start because that got me a helpful error explaining that there was no access to read /etc/qemu/bridge.conf. makes sense if it's not a world readable file and i'm starting the domain in "user mode"...

for the software ask game:
9 and 10
18
19
and 15
(nerd software game from mother debian)
9 and 10: chat on mobile and desktop. sad and not private, i mostly use whatsapp and discord and sometimes telegram but! at least on desktop i use discordo. this is all because no one i talk to is insane in my way
18. rss: i have miniflux set up with docker on my headless server but it has all of 3 feeds on it (substack newsletters). now that i am caught up to one piece i will throw the weebcentral feed on there like right after this
19. file sync/sharing: sshfs. SSHFS!!!!!!!!!!!! i no longer need to set up a vpn on three computers to torrent anything or kick around an external hard drive for my media library!!!
15. hobbies: my only software license is REAPER and i think it's going to lapse soon, after which i'll just use audacity. for arrangement i've used musescore for over a decade
