I haven't played either, but I've heard great things about Beam Saber. Occasionally I hear Lancer mentioned as well. "That's not how you play Shadowrun!"

You know what? I am gonna talk Cyberpunk this week. Specifically I am gonna talk about my issues with the genre. And I could not think of a better place to start but Shadowrun.

You see: I always loved Cyberpunk, because I grew up on Japanese Cyberpunk. And both the atmosphere, the aesthetic and heck, the rebelliousness of the genre were always my thing. As such it is not much of a surprise that I, who also loves to play TTRPGs, was instantly drawn to Shadowrun once I learned about it.

But... While I was playing Shadowrun I got to hear one thing from several players: "That is not how you play Shadowrun!"

Now, what about my playstyle was it, that irked them like that? Did I min-max too much? Or exploited something in the game? (Okay, admittedly I found one broken mechanic in SR5E.) Did I endanger the group? Or what was it, that I did?

Well, simple. I... played a character, who is not an asshole. In fact, I played characters, who were... at times self-less and did things for other people. Which included both the NPCs and other player characters. Because, you know... Again: I just did not play total assholes.

And apparently that is not "how you play Shadowrun". Apparently Shadowrun requires you to play asshole characters. Apparently there are rules against trying to positively influence the game world. Sure, the rules are not there in the rulebook, but I apparently... was supposed to just asume this. Because... Being self-less is actually stupid, you see?

So, uhm... Yeah. I haven't played Shadowrun in a while because of that. Because of the three groups I played in two of them had one or two of the dudes, who would decry my characters doing the "right" thing. Something that I just do because... TTRPGs are in the end a power fantasy. And my power fantasy is it to help people. Even in a cutthroat world.

But it is this kinda thinking that kinda irks me with Cyberpunk so much. The entire cutthroat "everyone needs to be an asshole" kind of thinking. Because... It is tiring.

People use have played Shadowrun 5e before, I’m playing a decker, and I’ve never played SR5e before, what gear and stuff like that(be it specifically for a decker or just to have in general) would be good to have? The amount of Nuyen doesn’t matter

Apropos of nothing, except tangentially my watching WotC start exploding after I had finally STOPPED playing d20 systems for a good 3+ years, but..

Now that everyone is suddenly scrambling to try new systems (meaning I’m watching people who have ONLY EVER PLAYED D&D have to play things that aren’t d20 for the first time) I find it funny that, as someone who has also played Shadowrun for a very long time, (2e in to 5e, baby!) in my experience, it’s veteran d&d only players that complain about finding shadowrun difficult to grok, the most.

Ttrpg neophytes actually pick up shadowrun 5e faster than veteran d&d players. Consistently.

(This is 100%!! Not me endorsing SR5e’s rules as good. They are not. But it is a humorous observation lol. Mind, my observation as a long time d&d player and GM, as well, is that most long term “d&d and ONLY d&d” players still don’t grok d&d’s rules, either. )

Of course, as soon as I post this I do the "damn it, let's see if I can stop thinking about homebrew", and YUP, there's rules for crafting a safehouse in another SR5e book. Lmao.

I'll keep looking them over to see if they're simple enough to use.

In spitballing phase right now, and this can all be invalidated once I read more of the rules, but I kinda want to make some homebrew for Shadowrun 5e to give the players a safehouse that they can invest in and upkeep. Maybe let them pool the Medium Lifestyle together at creation and give them a big warehouse with lower amenities at the start, but it gives them a ton of space to make things they want.

Now, knowing Shadowrun, there's probably like, 4 different books where this is doable, but I don't want to have to reference and cross reference different books if I can help it.

I need to look up average Nuyen prices for things to see if anything jumps out, so I can also figure out how much I need to give the group on a mission to mission basis too.
