This is the first time they’ve seen each other since the whole showing up in her bedroom in the middle of the night to show her Riley’s cheating/putting all of her friends and family in danger by risking being turned and Spike wants to apologize because he didn’t realize how hurt and embarrassed she’d be by showing her the way he did and I think given his reaction to the look she gives him she’s communicating to him “I DON’T WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT AND ESPECIALLY NOT HERE” because not only is she the queen of denial she doesn’t want her friends to know he’s coming into her bedroom and hanging around her house - which is how he was able to show her what Riley was doing - because they’ll make a HUGE deal about it and she clearly doesn’t care or want to deal with their reactions and potentially feels better he’s around because of dawn and glory

And he’s just like: oh……. 👁️👄👁️ 😬 oops… I’m literally AWFUL at this whole “hiding things from the people you love thing” (him being SHOCKED her mom doesn’t know she’s the slayer in season 2) and probably had to physically hold back a similar shocked response about her friends not knowing everything 😹😹😹 and then is like this is sooo not how I’d do it but OK *backs up*

Spike is the spark that brings Buffy’s fire (her ability to love) back

(stone - a notoriously non flammable material)

Buffy’s love is spoken about in relation to fire but even brighter and more intense

she sings of wanting the fire (her ability to love and feel as deeply as she once did) back - where once was a flame so bright it burned her - now there is nothing but black & cold

spike’s love for Buffy is also equated to fire showing how he matches her intensity with which she loves (love the use of the lighting in this shot he literally looks like he’s sitting back to back with his shadow as he wrestles for a moment of just letting Buffy die before ultimately going to help her) also this line is showing how much loving Buffy has cost him the burdens he’s carried, the pain and sacrifices he’s made and endured - “I have come to redefine the terms pain and suffering since falling in love with you” loving Buffy for Spike is painful AND HE STILL LOVES HER AND KEEPS TRYING TO DO AND BE BETTER FOR HER LITERALLY NO MATTER WHAT 😭🤚🏻

but this line from Giles foreshadows the need for Spike to get his soul (the spark) back in order for Buffy to get her fire back - soulless spike’s love is not enough because of the guilt and shame she feels loving a soulless demon

e voila! Their joint hands burst into flames in the moment Buffy can finally say the words “I love you” which she hasn’t told a romantic partner that since Angel - representing Buffy getting her fire back and that she has found someone who not only won’t pull away from the intensity of her love but can match it

hands ablaze and neither pulls away until forced to by the collapsing hellmouth and Buffy gasps in relief because she did it, she got the fire back and now she can tell him with no fear or shame that she loves him before it’s too late

and after she says it she has sort of this “I know that’s pretty obvious given our joint hands are currently ablaze as our twin flame souls intertwine but you deserve to hear it and I wanted to and now CAN say it” look on her face like she’s really fucking proud of him but also herself that this is how far they’ve come both as individuals and a couple

When I say Spike is the best romantic partner for Buffy it’s not because it’s perfect - it’s because after she dates angel and riley she’s an emotionally devastated, vulnerable, heartbroken, abandoned YET AGAIN mess who can barely hold it together and gets more and more closed off each time. But THIS is the impact Spike has on her. Despite all they go through he is a catalyst for the return of her strength, confidence, healing, and emotional vulnerability. I love the overall impact he has on her as well as her on him!! They change each other for the better!! Through their love!!!! THAT’S AMAZING!!

ok I’m only on season 5 but can someone explain to me how Xander is the universally hated one for, from what I can tell, some bad choices and worse jokes, while Spike, the fandom’s babygirl and beloved heartthrob, literally stalks Buffy, holds her captive, and then commissions a robot version of her when it’s made clear he’ll never have her. like someone please explain it because the math is not mathing.

Wait why did it take me until this very second to realize Buffy never says anything along the lines of what she said to xander which is “I just don’t see you that way or I don’t like you so it’ll never happen” which actually has insane implications about how much she’s into him even at his most cringe like it’s all about “it’s sick and wrong” and “are you insane??” and “don’t you dare say you love me” and “your feelings aren’t real” whereas she NEVER talks about herself. Which would put an end to it immediately. Instead she focuses on trying to make Spike’s feelings go away by invalidating them. She already has her own and just can’t seem to say “you’re super gross and I’m not into you” so opts for “THIS IS IRRELEVANT BECAUSE THIS ISNT REAL DONT MAKE ME CONFRONT ME DEEPLY REPRESSED FEELINGS AND ATTRACTION TO YOU” *storms out in a huff*

There's something about the way Spike says Angel's name that makes it feel like a term of endearment. It reminds me of the way he spoke to Buffy before he got his soul back. With her it was all "Slayer" or some silly pet name when everything was casual, but as soon as things got serious, he'd call her Buffy. I'll have to take an account of the names he uses for Angel when he's talking to him in s5 and pay a little closer attention to make sure I'm right, but I'm pretty sure it follows the same pattern. Except the names he uses for Angel tend to be more abrasive, like "Captain Forehead". Or that one time he called Angel "beefcake" when he saw him shirtless. An underappreciated moment if there ever was one.

But yeah, it's strange. Like, "angel" is itself a term of endearment. It's what my father always called me(despite the fact that he was a raging "Antithiest", something he called himself because he abhorred all religions and a belief in god at all). And something about the way Spike says it when he's talking to Angel makes it feel less like a name, and more like a term of endearment. Not always, but a lot of the time.

What do y'all think? I will be making a post of the names Spike calls Angel soon.

Crush is such a good episode. Like seriously…

1. The parallels between Dawn and Buffy are amazing. The way Dawns crush on Spike mirrors Buffy’s crush on Angel. Buffy was already a Slayer at Dawns age. By the time she met Angel she’d lost so much of her childhood. Falling in love with a 100+ year old vampire seems plausible. Dawn, not so much. We see her crush as amusing and cute but we know it’ll never happen. And not just because Spike is enamored with Buffy, but because Dawn gets to be a child. Dawns youth and innocence have been protected. It feels icky and wrong to think of her with this grown man. Buffy never had the luxury of being a child, of being protected.

2. The way Buffy genuinely has no idea Spike likes her. It’s so quintessentially Buffy. Her little “huh” when Dawn points it out is gold. Especially since this is AFTER Spike shows up at the Bronze just to “hang out”.

3. Spikes wardrobe. UGH. It’s perfect. The way he plays with lighter colors to show his commitment to the light. The way he puts his whole body into everything that he does. The way clothing is linked to identity for him. His entire look is crafted to express himself and he manipulates that expression to suit his needs and his feelings.

4. The dynamic between Spike / Dru / Buffy when he has them tied up in the basement. Honestly this is a top tier performance from Juliet Landau. Her comedic timing is on point. And James Marsters is giving it his all. He’s giving creepy stalker / deluded serial killer / “but I’m a nice guy” vibes and it is flawless.

5. Speaking of James’s performance, even though this is very much Spike at his most deluded and still mostly evil self, he gives us subtle glimpses at the true change that is to come. The way he softens with Dawn and Joyce. The genuine hurt on his face when he realizes Buffy has revoked his invitation. The way he immediately unchains Buffy and levels up at her side to fight the moment the danger to her becomes real. He never pushes it too far, you still read his crush as comical and absurd, you still know Spike is evil, but in the context of what is to come…these touches add so much depth.

6. “You were sleeping the sleep of the knocked unconscious” might be one of my most quoted lines in the entire series. I say this a lot because it’s just such a good line.

7. HARMONY. Ugh the way she comes in and shoots Spike and cat fights him. She never fails to make me laugh.

8. The moment where Buffy and Spike stand side by side, allies again, ready to take on Dru and Harmony if need be. It’s so perfect. This is their relationship at its core. From the end of season 2 to the end of season 7. Hate or love, friends or enemies, these two will stand together and fight.

9. Xander laughing about Spikes crush. This moment of lightness from Xander broke my heart a little bit. Buffy’s death breaks everyone but it steals Xanders joy and belief that everything will be ok. Season 5 Xander is still capable of seeing the funny in Spike loving Buffy. Season 6+ Xander can only see the danger.

I could go on and on but these are probably my top moments.
