Sprinklers, for @jilymicrofics
"So," Lily said, indicating the door of her house, "this is where I live."
James grinned. "I know, I've picked you home, remember? That's where we started our..."
"Tour," she finished, nodding, her gaze deviating for a moment. This is silly, Lily considered, though she found herself unable to glance back at James yet. It wasn't a tour.
James had met her by the front porch of her house, in the morning, as they had agreed — at a time when none of her parents or her sister were at home, just to avoid questions that Lily didn't want to answer right now. Questions like: so if you two are going to walk around the town, enjoy the hot summer day to go to a carnival, share ice cream, bump hands occasionally and pretend it wasn't on purpose, and banter all the way with a playful teasing tone—isn't this a date, no matter what else you called it?
Probably, but still, with their story, it felt too heavy to give it any label. They were just two people who had enjoyed a day together.
"I had fun," James added, a second before the silence between them stretched too long.
She smiled. "Me too. Any time you want to know more about Muggle stuff, I'm here."
"I might take that offer."
"Good," she said, and her face burned when she realized how eager she had sounded. "I should get in."
"Are you sure I can’t meet your parents?"
She opened her mouth, unsure of how to answer, and then James' laugh echoed. "I'm just messing you around, Evans."
She recovered quickly, eyes shining with mischief. "Good, I save meeting the family for the fourth date." He gasped, and the sound made her realized what she had just said. "Not that this—I mean, we were just..."
"Touring," he agreed, taking a step closer to her. "It couldn’t be a date."
"No?"
"Oh, no," he said, voice soft now. He was so close that she could see the green melting into the honey of his eyes. "If it were one, I might hope for a goodbye kiss."
Her breath caught. Lily took a step forward, head raised, gaze falling to his lips for a second.
"Maybe we could call it a date. Just to see how it goes."
"It doesn’t change much." He leaned in; her eyes fluttered close. "Except—"
A kiss, she thought exhilarated; there was a soft brush on her lips, a tingling sensation filled her whole body and then—
She jumped back. It was raining.
"What the—"
The sky was still blue, the sun was shining; it took a moment for Lily to get her surroundings and realize that the sprinklers were on, watering the well-cared green lawn that had been Petunia's summer proud and joy.
"Sorry!" She cried, pulling him to safety of the porch. He was drenched, and she couldn’t see his eyes behind the drops of water on his eyeglasses. "Sprintlers, they are programmed to—"
"Evans," he called, turning up the palm of his hand so his fingers intertwined with hers. James was beaming. "I was hoping for a bit of rain today. Nothing more romantic than a kiss in the rain."
And he pulled her back to the garden. Lily laughed; she was still smiling broadly as she raised her head and felt the cold drops falling. She took off his glasses; James carefully took the wet strands of hair from her face, leaned closer, and, if anyone would ask her, that was the perfect wet kiss to end their date.

With a turn of a ceremonial key, Parks Commissioner Walter R. Herrick demonstrated the newly installed sprinklers throughout Central Park on December 8, 1928.
The Times reported that the pipes of the new irrigation system, which have "concealed spray heads," will be controlled by a timer and create a fine mist. "Its operation starts with an electric clock which turns the system on or off at the given time." The system was estimated to do in 10 minutes the watering work of 10 men over several days.

The anti-Semitic students who "appropriated" Harvard Yard with tents, signs, and—if Harvard is anything like Columbia —spendy, organic snacks for the wealthy, gluten-dodging street urchins calling for the death of Israel reportedly got a wake-up call they didn't expect: a master-blasting by automatic sprinklers.
Harvard Crimson:
Sprinkler Struggles Continue — 4:05 a.m. As protesters spend their first night in the Harvard Yard encampment, the biggest threat to their stay has not come from administrators or Harvard University police officers, but the Yard’s sprinklers. Two more sprinklers turned on at the edge of the encampment near Massachusetts Hall. The sprinklers began to hit tents on the edge of the camp before protesters rushed over to covered the sprinklers with buckets and sit on them. Sprinkler Turns on Inside Encampment — 3:50 a.m. A sprinkler has turned on within the encampment, in the middle of the tents. A protester covered it immediately with a bucket, and is now seated on the bucket as a puddle forms around it. There is little movement among campers. “Yellow team needs to come now,” a protester said on a phone call when the sprinkler turned on. Sprinklers Disturb Sleeping Campers — 2:20 a.m. As temperatures dipped to 36 degrees, sprinklers near University Hall have begun to turn on — though none on the grass within the encampment. There is movement throughout the camp as protesters seem to start preparing for more, distributing buckets around various points of the perimeter.
Oddly enough, there doesn't appear to be any video evidence corroborating the soaking, just the burbs above from the Crimson, Harvard's student newspaper.
WEEP-O-RAMA! Harvard's precious lambs will probably call this an attack by "automatic assault sprinklers" trying to "genocide" them.
The hilarious (alleged) dousing took place on Wednesday.

Fire Department Homemade Sprinkler
Firefighters at Station 11 in Northeast Minneapolis built this soaking sprinkler to help neighborhood kids beat the heat in the summer of 1935. The sprinkler was attached to a fire hydrant near 3rd Ave. and 6th St. SE and turned on by firefighters (William Fust is pictured here) on hot days. On August 10, 1935, when these photos were taken, the mercury made it up to 89 degrees Fahrenheit.

How to Best Take Care of Your Lawn During Summer Season
Maintaining a healthy lawn can be challenging, especially during drought or the hot summer. With water restrictions and the intense heat, adopting specific strategies is essential to ensure your lawn remains vibrant and resilient. Let's explore the best practices for caring for your lawn during these challenging times, including insights on using services from sprinkler and irrigation companies and choosing the best lawn sprinkler systems for efficient watering.
Understanding the Impact of Drought and Heat on Lawns
Drought and extreme heat can severely stress your lawn, causing grass to turn brown, thin out, and more susceptible to weeds, pests, and diseases. The lack of water limits the grass's ability to photosynthesize, leading to reduced growth and vitality. Additionally, high temperatures can cause soil compaction, which restricts root growth and water absorption.
Essential Lawn Care Tips for Drought and Summer Season
Water Wisely and Efficiently
Efficient watering is crucial to maintaining a healthy lawn during drought and summer. Water deeply but infrequently to encourage profound root growth, which helps grass withstand dry conditions. It's best to water early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are more relaxed and evaporation rates are lower. Consider installing a system from reliable sprinklers and irrigation companies for optimal watering. The best lawn sprinkler systems are designed to distribute water evenly, minimize waste, and ensure your lawn receives the proper water.
Mow High and Less Frequently
Adjust your mower to a higher setting during the summer months. Taller grass reduces water evaporation, shades the soil, and promotes more profound root growth. To avoid stressing the lawn, it's also important not to cut more than one-third of the grass blade length at a time. Mowing less frequently and leaving the grass clippings on the lawn can help retain moisture and provide essential nutrients.
Fertilize Appropriately
Avoiding over-fertilizing during drought is crucial, as it can lead to excessive growth and an increase in water needs. Use a slow-release fertilizer to provide nutrients gradually without overwhelming the lawn. Organic fertilizers are also a good option, as they improve soil structure and water retention.
Aerate the Soil
Soil compaction is standard during drought and high temperatures, limiting water and nutrient absorption. Aerating the soil helps alleviate compaction, allowing air, water and nutrients to reach the grass roots more effectively. It's best to aerate your lawn in the spring or fall, but it can also be done during summer if necessary.
Control Weeds and Pests
Weeds and pests can use stressed lawns during drought, out-competing the grass for water and nutrients. Regularly inspect your lawn for signs of pests and weeds, and take appropriate measures to control them. Using mulch in garden beds can help retain moisture and reduce weed growth.
Mulch and Compost
Applying a layer of mulch around the trees helps retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and reduce weed growth. Composting yard waste as a soil amendment can improve soil structure, water retention, and nutrient content.
Monitor and Adjust Irrigation Systems
If you have an automated or smart irrigation system, regularly inspect and adjust it to ensure proper functioning. Check for leaks, clogged nozzles, and broken sprinkler heads. Set the system to water efficiently, avoiding over-watering or under-watering. Sprinkler and irrigation companies can provide professional assessments and maintenance services to ensure your sprinkler system operates optimally.
Taking care of your lawn during drought or the hot summer season requires a combination of proper watering, mowing, fertilization, and soil management practices. Efficient watering is critical, and investing in a system from reputable sprinkler and irrigation companies can help you achieve optimal results. Choosing the best lawn sprinkler system can ensure your lawn receives adequate water while minimizing waste.
Following these tips and adjusting your lawn care routine to suit the conditions can help you maintain a healthy lawn throughout the summer. Remember that every lawn is unique, so monitoring its condition and adjusting as needed is essential. With the right approach, you can enjoy a beautiful yard even in challenging weather conditions.

So, what do you do on a hot summer day, why you go to the beach, stand in the sprinkler units and then you get ice cream. I don't think I had anything like that sprinkler system when I was growing up. It was usually the lake or the river.
