Interview with Thomas ahead of the 100th Champions League match at the Allianz Arena

Mr. Müller, do you remember your first European Cup appearance in the Allianz Arena?

Yes, exactly. In March 2009, I was substituted for Bastian Schweinsteiger after just over 70 minutes in the match against Sporting Lisbon. In the 90th minute, I managed to score a goal on my debut to make the final score 7:1. It was a left-footed shot and, of course, a great moment for me as a 19-year-old. Scoring a goal in your first Champions League game in front of 65,000 spectators, that's when the emotions start to bubble.

You have played the most European Cup matches in the Allianz Arena, namely 74, and scored the second most goals, a total of 32. Only Robert Lewandowski is ahead of you in this hit parade with 38 goals in 38 appearances. Which of your goals do you rate as the best or most important?

My most important goal was the 1:0 lead in the 2012 dahoam final against Chelsea FC. Toni Kroos had crossed the ball from the half-left over the Chelsea defense into the five-meter area, I ran into the back of them and pushed the ball onto the turf with my forehead from close range just before the goal line, from where it bounced into the short corner under the crossbar. This brutal explosion of emotion was incredible, I've never felt it as intensely as I did at that moment.

Which European Cup match in the Allianz Arena will remain a special memory for you?

My top three are the final at home, the 4-0 semi-final win against FC Barcelona in 2013 and the round of 16 against Juventus in 2016, which we won 4-2 in extra time.

You scored a goal in each of these games, even two against Barcelona.

So it's all the nicer that they were goals in big matches, in knockout games.

Was the Allianz Arena more of an advantage or a disadvantage in the 2012 final against Chelsea FC?

Of course it was an advantage. Sometimes it's also about the little things, such as knowing the procedures, the dressing room and the characteristics of the pitch. There was a great atmosphere in the stadium and throughout the city. The Bayern fans did a fantastic job of pushing us forward. We played a great game, but unfortunately we didn't score enough goals.

Is the atmosphere in the Champions League in the Allianz Arena generally different, more tingling than in the league, even when it's against top teams in the Bundesliga?

The atmosphere in the Champions League is of course something special. When the floodlights come on and the Champions League anthem plays, the fans and players get that extra tingle.

You became world champions at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro in 2014 and won the Champions League trophy at Wembley Stadium in London in 2013. Which arena in the world or in the European Cup was the most impressive for you?

Difficult to say. But the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid is impressive: in the middle of the city with its steep stands and Real fans all in white.

Jepang panggil 27 pemain untuk hadapi Indonesia dan China

Pelatih timnas Jepang Hajime Moriyasu memanggil 27 pemain untuk melakoni dua laga tandang putaran ketiga kualifikasi Piala Dunia 2026 zona Asia melawan Indonesia dan China.

Jepang akan memulai laga tandang melawan Indonesia di Stadion Utama Gelora Bung Karno Jakarta, Jumat pekan depan. 

Empat hari berikutnya, Samurai Biru terbang ke China untuk menjalani pertandingan di Stadion The Xiamen Egret pada Selasa pekan berikutnya pukul 19.00 WIB.

Menurut akun media sosial timnas Jepang, dari 27 pemain yang dipanggil Moriyasu, 23 di antaranya  pemain-pemain yang merumput di luar negeri termasuk enam pemain bermain dalam Liga Champions musim ini.

Empat pemain lainnya bermain di dalam negeri, yakni kiper Keisuke Osako (Sanfrecce Hiroshima) dan kiper Kosei Tani (Machida Zelvia) serta bek Yuto Nagatomo (FC Tokyo) dan Kota Takai (Kawasaki Front).

Moriyasu tak membawa striker andalan, Ayase Ueda,  karena cedera. Dengan begitu, pelatih berusia 56 tahun itu akan mengandalkan striker NEC Nijmegen Koki Ogawa dan striker Celtic Kyogo Furuhashi yang sama-sama sudah mengemas enam gol.

Jepang tengah memuncaki klasemen Grup C dengan 10 poin, unggul lima poin dari Australia, Arab Saudi, dan Bahrain pada posisi kedua sampai keempat.
