Ik kookte alweer zelf gisterenavond, noedels met gebakken courgette en paprika en viskoekjes. Dat had ik in Esjberg al ingeslagen, niet wetende dat de camping een grillbar exploiteert, waar je ook prima kunt eten. Maar dat maak ik morgen wel goed, als ik in Tønder ben, zei ik tegen mezelf.

Vanmorgen was ik voor zessen al op, ik wil graag vroeg vertrekken vanwege het weer. In de vroege uurtjes heb ik nog wind mee, daarna krimpt die naar zuidwest, trekt aan tot 6-7 en brengt buien mee van zee. Ik ben in no-time in Ribe en fiets zomaar langs een warme bakker met koffie. Dat geeft ook even tijd om een plan te maken. Fiets ik de officiële route langs de waddendijk of snij ik af en ga ik binnendoor? Dat scheelt ruim twintig kilometer en ik besluit tot het laatste.

Na Ribe krijg ik de eerste buitjes over me heen. Regenbroek en schoenhoezen aan en uit en aan en uit.

In Brøns bekijk ik een kerk met fantastische middeleeuwse wandschilderingen. Er zit voor elk wat wils in, Jezus ligt onder het kruis, links van hem zie je Sint Christoffel met het kindje Jezus op zijn schouder en rechts van hem Sint Joris die de draak doodt. Ik stel me zo voor dat deze schilderingen door crowdfunding tot stand zijn gekomen. Als je voldoende schellingen in de pot stortte, sponsorde je een voorstelling naar keuze. Dat kevert een wat warrig, maar boeiend geheel op, je raakt er niet snel op uitgekeken.

In Skaerbaek staat ook een forse kerk en juist als ik binnenloop, begint de organiste te oefenen. Het orgel klinkt wat schril in de hoge registers, maar ik heb er mooie geluidsopnames van gemaakt, die zal ik er later tussen plakken.

Na Skaerbaek slaat het weer echt om, het begint te stormen en de ene na de andere bui trekt over. Tussen de buien door eet ik snel een broodje langs de kant van de weg, het is niet echt weer om uitgebreid te lunchen. Ik ploeter met een slakkegangetje naar de camping van Møgeltønder, de gedachte aan een warme douche en een warme hut houdt me in beweging. De hut valt niet tegen, een luie bank en een werkende televisie met Deense zenders. Het zal mij benieuwen wat er vanavond op het programma staat. Het is mijn laatste nachtje in Denemarken, nog maar zes kilometer naar de grens.
