Day 29: Sponge People

(Man I am on a roll. I already know what my ideas are gonna be for the last two prompts after this as well. So this one I knew was gonna be about Coralkin, but then I figured why not add onto the body horror part. What would be more terrifying to a hive mind then some of your parts screaming in stress for no reason at all? No one ever thinks of the kinds of dieases that could affect an anthro creature)

This is a public service announcement. Do not disregard this message. It has come to the attention of the Atlantean Council that there has been a recent uptick in cases of Coralkin bleaching. We believe this to be the case due to not only the recent reef ventures provided as a tourist service in relation to where we have parked the city but also purported electrical failures in certain areas of the city. We understand your concerns and are thus moving to better waters to ensure the safety of our people as well as sending out as many technicians as we can. Please report any damaged cooler systems. Our Coralkin representative here at the council has also fallen ill after a recent outing to try and nurture some fellow staghorns. He has decided to include a statement of his experience with being bleached in order to help his fellow people understand the symptoms and thus be able to report them to the proper medical procedures. We came in that day thinking nothing of our time out there in the deep blue other than despair for our fellow non-uplifted coral. Every polyp of us agreed to try and see if our researchers could create an algal therapy in order to save our fellows from their stress. However, only a small handful of us noticed that the suit we wore had a scratch in it. It was already too late however. A cursory look in the mirror revealed that our right arm polyps had already ejected the algae. We tried to call out to them, but they were already so scared and worried. The rest of us could feel their stress. We could barely even get them to listen when we asked them to move that arm. We don’t even know what’s worse, the fear they were sending to the rest of us or the hunger that they so desperately wanted to be fulfilled. Our time at the doctor was fulfilling however. Algal therapy does wonders in order to cure the bleaching. Contrary to popular belief, they do not supply artificial algae. They take a culture of your algae and grow more and then apply a salve to the stressed part in order to bond it back together again. The rest of us have been taking care of those polyps, keeping ourselves in sunlight with the air conditioning on. Trust me, see a doctor. Symptoms of Bleaching in Coralkin: 

Polyps turn white

Polyps start sending signals of distress and fear

Polyps do not respond to fellow polyps messages. 

Increased hunger

Increased stress

Full Bleaching: Higher rate of mortality due to stress and hunger

Symptoms to Look Out for If Not Coralkin:

Whiteness in the body

Lethargy

Worried and panicked actions

Seeking light at a hurried rate

Remember: Bleaching is not just a common disease. It can mean the death of an entire coral.

The Captain's right hand Blue Sponge Cookie

Don't let his humorous disposition fool you, Blue Sponge Cookie didn't get his high rank position on the most respectable ship of the republic just by kissing up to it's captain. He's a witty little bugger who could talk his way out of hell on pure charisma alone. Some of the crew even claim that's how he's survived this long. Which is why his true job aboard, is to keep the ship's morale high. As while he is often the subject of teasing, he's well ingrained with the entire crew as a close confidant and friend. I like to imagine that while there might be a universal "standard" language to make interplanetary communication easier (ex: Koppaite text is also found on the S.S. Shepherd among several other places), everyone's accents and dialects are still different depending on their home planet!!

this in mind. it is nearly IMPOSSIBLE to tell right away where Bernard is from. this is because he uses so much lingo from different places he's been to and pronounces certain words in a Variety of different ways that it can be hard to trace if you haven't known him long enough

to a certain extent, I know that people want to keep fandom and advocacy spaces separate and I acknowledge and relate to that- when we are logged on every moment of the day we sometimes need to take breaks and engage with something else for our mental health. I need that too. and there is a very thin line when you try to apply fandom to current events because in all honesty, making headcanons about how your faves would react to X horrendous event can come off as extremely tone-deaf. I get you love your blorbos (I do too!), but actual people are suffering and it can come off as disingenuous to a lot of folks when you try to talk about your characters instead of the very real harm that is going on. HOWEVER, the other account posted in the leverage tag that the crew would be zionists and started that discourse and since it was already out there in our space I wanted to make sure that people know that this blog does not support that whatsoever.

and before this gets misconstrued: antizionism is not antisemitism. I have a lot of love for my jewish friends and followers, but saying that we can't be critical of war crimes and incessant aggression because it is a jewish state is fucking ridiculous. we should be able to hold any and all governments accountable when they do bad things (this absolutely also means I think we should hold the US accountable for enabling them and I live here. every country that is complicit needs to face consequences). saying that israel is exempt from criticism because jewish people deserve a right to a homeland isn't a great take. I completely understand fear of antisemitism and discrimination, but at some point we have to think critically and acknowledge that people are dying by the thousands and standing up for that and calling out atrocities takes precedence. jewish voices for peace has some really good content about this topic

I'm never going to forgive America for being such a celebrity and narcissistic encouraging country.
