(my friend says this really shows how i interpret all of em lmao and it’s also a bit reflective of what i think their music tastes would be like, but here ya go):

( Hey everyone! Since Sons of Theseus is basically a fic, I wanted to make an author's notes sort of post explaining some of the things going on in it.

Directly under the cut will be a TL;DR so you can get up to speed with my muses' current main verses without reading SoT, though I'd appreciate if you did. Spoiler alert!

Anyway, let's get to it! )

Too Long; Didn't Read:

Bryan: After being trapped in a false reality for over a year, Fury had difficulty grasping if he was actually free of his perfect dream or still stuck. He found Dragunov during the eighth King of Iron Fist Tournament. Due to their shared history, Fury made him his basis of what was real or not. Sergei died during Azazel's rebirth, causing Bryan to rampage across continental Europe, Dragunov's corpse in tow, to the HQ of the Gold Raptors. He witnessed Sergei's resurrection and went with him to the Battle of Yakushima (after all, who was gonna stop him?). He panicked when he perceived Sergei on the brink of death again and intervened in Dragunov's fight with Victor. Sergei was only enacting a ruse, however, and attacked Bryan instead. Their tussle was interrupted by Devil Kazuya. When the dust settled, Bryan realized Dragunov is just as strong as he ever was, and thus knows now for certain that he is in the real world, and it is his for the taking.

Sergei: An attempt to give a graduation gift to his younger sister was hideously misinterpreted, causing him to lose his temper and have a painful coughing fit. He was dispatched to the King of Iron Fist Tournament to represent Russia and defeated Shaheen. Part of the Coliseum collapsed during Azazel's appearance. He was crushed under rubble and killed. At the instant of his death, the Gold Raptors captured a snapshot of his being down to the quantum level and reconstructed him, minus the cancer in his lungs and throat he did not know he had. The Major, leader of the Raptors, sent him to the Battle of Yakushima, where he fought with Victor. He feigned an injury to catch the Raven off-guard, but Bryan "rescued" him before he could follow through. Outraged at the lost opportunity, Dragunov attacked Bryan instead, stabbing him in the thigh. Devil Kazuya brought the entire battle to a fiery halt. Initially despairing over what he thought was a complete failure of his mission, Sergei realized that he had almost killed Fury without much effort. If he could do that fresh from the grave, then his future potential is limitless.

Stuff I Want to Mention:

The thread's title, Sons of Theseus, refers to the Ship of Theseus thought experiment: "is something still the same thing if it has all of its original parts replaced?" Both Bryan and Dragunov go through some hefty changes through the story. Fury gets his entire perception of reality rocked, deeply disturbing him for possibly the first time in his life. Sergei gets it worse -- he is literally rebuilt from the ground up.

There are two songs embedded in SoT: Dead Man's Party by Oingo Boingo, and Silent Running by Gorillaz. Both have lyrics relevant to the story.

Dead Man's Party:

I was hit by something last night in my sleep It's a dead man's party, who could ask for more? Everybody's comin', leave your body at the door Leave your body and soul at the door

Though I mostly used this song to go with the jovial atmosphere of Bryan's dream of Hollywood stardom, in his first post, he is hit by something in his sleep: Dragunov talking. The sheer shock of this is enough to snap him out of it!

Silent Running:

Stop, 'cause you're killing me You brought me back and made me feel free Rowdy waves and your energy You pulled me fragile from the wreckage Well, I got so lost here Machine assisted, I disappear To a dream, you don't wanna hear How I got caught up in nowhere again

This song was a HUGE inspiration for SoT as a whole. These lyrics practically happen. Why?

Because Sons of Theseus is fix-it fic. imo Bryan and Dragunov have a lot of potential. Yeah, I know, I get it, T8 isn't about them. But blizzardrush and unbrydledfury are! With any luck, I gave them a compelling narrative to go along with the canon story.

Speaking of which, the entire thing, like most of my fics, was the result of brainworms. I didn't get T8 right out of the gate, and though I tried to avoid spoilers, I heard that the losers of the KoIF tournament would be killed. Since Bryan and Dragunov are villains, I assumed they would likely be goners. How was I supposed to write them if they were canonically dead? This wasn't the case, of course, but I liked the idea of actually killing one of my muses. Sergei drew the short straw because I was having trouble deciding how his character was developing. Now he has a blank slate! What a lucky guy!

I didn't want his resurrection to be an ass-pull handwaved by oh the Foundation Raptors are ~*~spooOOooky~*~ military mad science, but then I remembered there is precedent for them doing shit like this :^)

Bryan being stuck in a lotus-eater machine was the result of much brainstorming about how to keep a nearly-invincible cyborg subdued for over a year. Turns out it's easy -- you just target the ego. Fun fact: the duration his black box reports was the length of time between that post and the last post I made on unbrydled :')

Finally, there's a blink-and-you'll-miss-it reference Bryan makes to a "thing in Vegas". He's talking about the three-way thread between him, Dragunov, and icecoldwilliams' Nina, in which they're chasing down a lost nuclear bomb before someone sets it off. I love continuity in my RP blogs; I feel like it gives them more weight.

So there you go! That wraps up SoT. Bryan and Dragunov are officially updated and back to regular programming.

The most cursed ideas I’ve had so far for my Gorillaz Replaced!AU are:

1) Not only does 2D have Damon’s singing voice, no, his speaking voice is Damon, too, making all the goofy shit he says even weirder (though, to be fair, Stu’s a lot more “normal” in this AU).

2) Seb also has Damon’s voice, but only falsetto. Ghost Train was recorded by him when he was still solo under the name Gorilla. Well, except for the garbled voice towards the end of the song which was a ghost he caught on tape shortly after making Kong Studios his new home (spoiler alert it was Del pretending to be a demon bc he was in the mood for a bit of trolling)

(Basically, both dudes sound like the opposite of what one may expect)

Hey, if you're still doing Gorillaz headcannons, can you please do a Gorillaz + Ace with a significant other who tries to get into wearing makeup but they don't know wear to start or suck at applying it?

Murdoc

- You cannot tell me this man doesn't wear makeup just to feel ~~purdy~~ ((or just so he can stay young looking, shhh))

The first thing he did when he saw them putting on makeup, he choked, and not in a good way. He'd probably cringe, feel pity for them, or both? Anyways, he forced them to stop doing it, and clean their face.

Only to make a "tsk tsk" noises playfully while he redid their makeup ((absolutely loved the moment to death, but refuses to admit it))

- Buys them makeup and lets them borrow his, but only with his supervision so he can point out when they do something wrong

- Forces them to watch him put on his makeup so they can "get a good idea what YOU SHOULD DO" In actuality, he likes the company

Ace

- Also wears makeup but only a light amount. His is shit too, so when he found out, he went like: "OM MY GAWD!!! YOU WEAR MAKEUP TOOOOO?!?!?! WE'RE GONNA BE THE NEXT BEAUTY STARS"

- Strictly goes against watching makeup tutorials because "I know what im doing!" Spoiler alert he doesn't

- Asks to do their makeup but when they allow him do it, he just does clown makeup and giggles to himself

- "I look like the mona lisa"

- Plays the most fruitest music while doing makeup. <My older sibling does that!>

2D

- Heard from Noodle that she saw them doing their makeup, he came to investigate. Cringed instantly

- Wears a light amount of makeup but still wants to help them

- Suggests to watch a makeup tutorial, repeats everything it says back to them. "Now get your brush" followed by 2D going, "Get your brush"

- Talks about his encounter with Elton John while you do your makeup

Noodle

- When she bardged into your room to annoy them, she saw them doing what looked to be an attempt to do makeup. "What.. what are you doing?"

- Used to do the boys makeup, so she is very skilled at it.

- Uses Ace as an example of what not to do

- Has.. intersting names for the makeup supplies, "Hand me the moldy broccoli!"

Russel, my beloved

- Usually just wears lipstick, so he doesn't know what to do really

- Learns from Noodle, books, and youtube tutorials on how to makeup, because one: He wants to teach you

- Only knows how to do halloween face paint

- Clueless as fuck. Asks why you were putting on makeup in the first place

‘Really? Name one.’ Noodle isn't just gonna back down.

She'll keep insisting, wanting Murdoc to admit that he is indeed a big fan of Disney movies.

Why would he watch otherwise?

Russel is probably the only one who truly disconnects from his surroundings and focus on the movies.

He's so focused he truly doesn't hear a word his friends are saying.

2D keeps struggling to focus on one thing at once.

Which is worth the most? The movie or the feud between Murdoc and Noodle?

Each own at least one Disney item.

Noodle has the hat with the famous Mickey ears.

Russel secretly has a playlist filled with Disney songs on his phone.

Murdoc has a phone case with Sulley's fur patterns.

But he claims it's purely a coincidence.

Spoiler alert, it's not.

2D owns a couple plushies from his favorite movies.

There's plenty of disney references being thrown around throughout the day.

Only Stu takes a little longer to get them but give him time.

Are they planning a trip to Disneyland? Absolutely.

10,634 - not many at all! I mostly post oneshots. Maybe one day I'll post a work that's that amount alone. The only public document I've written that was that long was my dissertation😂

What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

Oh definitely 'All We Are' - it's my only Gorillaz fanfic so far and I think the nature of Gorillaz as a franchise demands that it has darker undertones, especially the themes of the history of how Murdoc has treated 2D in the past. Spoiler alert but I kind of like that Murdoc doesn't pursue his feelings and cuts it off - it feels very in character.

What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?

Literally all of my others tend to have happier conclusions - I just like to see my ships get together haha! I would say 'The Element of Surprise' has the happiest ending - I just wanted Al to have his death ramps ring back so it was purely self-indulgent😂

Do you write crossovers? If so, what is the craziest one you’ve written?

None yet! I did have an idea to pair Finn and Poe with Inside Llewyn Davis, although it's probably more of an AU than a crossover - perhaps Poe (in the starving artist role of Llewyn) meets Finn at one of the Gorfiend's dinner parties and it continues from there? Who knows bro🤷🏻‍♀️

Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Not really, everyone's been very kind!

Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

I do write smut but I've only ever published one piece, 'Not Safe For Comms' - it took a lot of courage to post that one because even though writing's writing at the end of the day, smut does have a reputation per-se and, lets be honest, no one wants to read bad smut, so I had to make sure it was just right - it takes a lot to really build it up and make a reader feel excited about it and believe it. Maybe more is to come (har har) if I get any more ideas 👀

What’s your all time favourite ship?

That is a huge question!

I LOVE Milex but I'm currently only really reading it and not writing it - no particular reason aside from a general lack of content and inspiration atm but this could change with Miles' new album and potential AM7? 👀

Can't lie, I'm really digging FinnPoe/Stormpilot the most atm. I have so many thoughts and feelings about them but I'm just upset that disney didn't go for it and put them together - it's literally tangible: their whirlwind meeting where they saved each others' lives and Poe gave Finn his NAME, the lip bite™ at the end of Force Awakens, the dynamic of the dashing flyboy pilot falling HARD for a rebel stormtrooper he just met, the way they bicker like a married couple, god I love it. It's also no secret that I'm currently on an Oscar Isaac hype and the fact that both he AND John Boyega were actively rooting for them to get together (even saying they played the roles romantic) just makes me love them even more. We were ROBBED!

I also ship the Tenth Doctor and Rose Tyler(my TRUE otp since 2006) Cassian and Jyn from Rogue One(why they gotta die like that) and The Eleventh Doctor and Clara (they're just cute alright!) as well as many more!

What’s a WIP you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

I also tend to also scrap things that just aren't working. I had a Milex one where the lads played a flirty game of pool set in 2005 but I was wrestling with it for so long that I just let it go. I also wrote around 10k of a fic where Alex was undercover and Miles was a crime boss😂 but I felt icky about it cause even though I made Alex an independent detective in a noir style it still felt a bit copaganda-esque and I didn't like that. The only WIP I currently have is a very basic FinnPoe one(inspired by Oscar dancing in Ex Machina cause I am what? Basic x) but I think I only like it for how I've written the ending so I need to find a way to get that to work 'cause I really like it!

What are your writing strengths?

I'm not the best out there - I mostly write for myself haha but I think I'm pretty good at description and scene setting, as well as some exposition.

What are your writing weaknesses?

A lot of things tbh, even though I did creative writing at A Level 🙃 I struggle with plot a lot(hence the oneshots), and sometimes dialogue stumps me. It's all a learning process!

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I've never had a reason to, but I'd have to get it translated accurately if I did. I think it's also important not to alienate a reader as sometimes I read stuff and it's a bit jarring if you're not sure on the meaning.

What was the first fandom you wrote for?

Milex is my first published fic, but I think I wrote for maybe Doctor Who back in the day? I've been reading fanfic for years, though.

What’s your favourite fic you’ve written?

I have so few that I like them all! I do like my Gorillaz one which is surprising as that one took me the least time to write and I didn't even expect to write it at all - it's somehow my most popular fic(maybe the gorillaz fandom is just super active?) and I think the more angsty ending gave me a lot more to play with.

Is "unhinged" fandom drama a thing of the past? Or is it still a thing? I'm kind of new here and want to make an informed decision before diving in and embracing the madness lol

Honestly? I couldn't say anything for certain until Gorillaz starts releasing new content again. People say they're leaving and never coming back aaaall the time around here, but before you even notice, they're active again.

However, speaking from personal experience, this has always been an, uh, intense community to be a part of, and I don't expect that to change. I guess you could take this in various ways, but I don't think Gorillaz will ever be as popular as it was from 2016-2018. That was probably the best and worst time for the fandom (as I've experienced it). Still, even during SM1 when things were significantly quieter, there was still a good bit of strong feelings being spread around. I imagine there will continue to be unhinged parts of the fandom, we just won't know what flavor it will be until things pick up again.

A few things to keep in mind: A good bit of fans like to be socially conscious, and want to know where people stand. Gorillaz is also targeting more of their marketing towards kids now, so there are a lot more younger fans these days. I'd say that having a strong sense of who you are (your values and beliefs, what you look for in friends) and being able to empathize with people who disagree with you (re: shipping 2doc in particular) will be the most helpful here. I've avoided a lot by focusing on myself, ignoring most things but drawing clear boundaries when I need to, and allowing the content I produce to speak for itself.

Even so, I've had friends get hate for drawing fanart of my fics, stumbled upon people publicly discussing whether I was an "anti" or a "pro-shipper" etc etc (spoiler alert - I think those labels are silly, and each point of contention re: those sorts of issues is nuanced and something to be assessed on a case-by-case basis), had anons namedrop other users in my inbox etc etc. Not engaging or commenting is what's worked for me in those situations, because to me, someone who is going to jump to conclusions over talking to me probably isn't someone I want to get to know anyways. I know who I am, and so do my friends, and that's what's important to me. I guess this could apply to any fandom, but hopefully this gives you some things to chew on as you decide what to do!

saturn’s playlist: an ode to oil

1. Soldier, Poet, King - The Oh Hellos

We start of with a song to set the scene, the story this playlist tells is about a young Saturn finding his path through the world of love and heartbreak while also experiencing the pressure of the world expecting him to be a great king one day. Spoiler alert: he will.

2. Never Met You - Tom Law

Saturn is in love. He's never met a girl like this, he's never even actually met her, but she's his soulmate. They fit together perfectly and he can't imagine ever meeting someone as perfect as she is.

We're taking some liberty with pronouns here, but it's safe to say Saturn is still very much in love with her. They've now actually met in person and Saturn loves her even more.

She's dying. They've actually been together for a few years now and Saturn looks back on the time they spent together because deep down he knows he'll be losing her.

5. Burned Out - dodie

He's just lost the love of his life, there's not much more to say about it. He feels worn out and tired and he's struggling to move on.

6. De Bom - Doe Maar

We're getting into Dutch territory now. It's a song about how nothing we do really matters because we're all gonna die anyway so why bother trying? And that's how Saturn is going through life too now, he's keeping up the façade but on the inside he's already given up.

7. This Is Home - Cavetown

Saturn is struggling and it's heartbreaking. He feels like he'll never be loved again or be able to love and even though he's trying to get better he doesn't even know where to start.

8. Andromeda - Gorillaz

(Not to be confused with Andromeda the constellation or Andromeda the rogue tent). Saturn has a social life? Kind of, the song is about losing yourself in the throws off partying and clubs and worrying about nothing other than The Beat.

9. Sexy Als Ik Dans - Nielson

(A Dutch bop) Saturn meets Mercury! Or well, meets, he notices them and is immediately pulled in by their confident aura and their "zero fucks given" attitude. Mercury dances their heart out with Saturn watching from the sidelines, hoping to be noticed.

10. My Type - Saint Motel

The title says it all really. Saturn things Mercury is attractive as fuck, but not only in the physical sense and he slowly feels himself falling for them like he never thought he would again.

11. A Shitty Gay Song About You - Smoothboi Ezra

Our boy is in love again! And he's pining. So hard. It's painful really. Everything reminds him of Mercury and he just can't stop thinking of them. (It's kind of pathetic, he's a future king, but I love him for it)

12. Home - Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros

(Also known as the IKEA song) A perfect contrast to This Is Home that we had earlier. Instead of running from his home he's finally found a home that he feels like running towards. It's Mercury, Mercury is his home and the two of them are adorable together.

13. Two Birds - Regina Spektor

Saturn is still scared to completely let himself fall for Mercury, but he's trying, he really is. It's just very hard.

14. In Case You Don't Live Forever - Ben Platt

(I love Ben Platt, no hetero) While Saturn is still afraid of losing Mercury he's trying his best and Mercury is there every step of the way to help him out. He learns to admit his love out loud again, and while things might not be perfect, they're getting better every day.

If you're still doing the imagines, can we get Murdoc being a dad and taking care of his baby. I loved the imagine of the pregnant girlfriend so would love to see the follow up.

Reaction to Pregnant GF imagine

When he finally got to hold the baby in his arms, Murdoc kind of just stared down at them without a word. He could see his and your features all mixed into this wrinkly bundle of a thing, and he wasn’t sure how to feel. Pride? Joy? Fear?

As soon as your baby opened their eyes and stared back at him, though, all he felt was this overwhelming feeling of love. He very nearly cried because of it.

He wasn’t crazy about the constant crying or changing the baby’s diapers or them throwing up on his shoulder when he only tried to get them to burp, but that didn’t mean he loved your baby any less. You’ve seen him play peek-a-boo or other small games with them on multiple occasions, but he gets embarrassed about it after, especially if the other bandmates catch him, too.

He talks to them quite often, but refuses to use baby-talk. You’ve actually heard him talk to your child as if they were a grown person who could understand what he was saying more than once now. You think it’s hilarious, but he just keeps doing it, anyway. Of course, you have to remind him not to teach your newborn swear words just in case they say one as their first word (a thought that mortifies you but makes him laugh).

Your baby loves most of the other bandmates, but they’re terrified of 2-D (mostly because of his eyes), wihch Murdoc finds hysterical. However, they start to warm up to him once he starts singing them to sleep with special lullabies written just for them. This, of course, makes Murdoc jealous, and it soon becomes this weird pissing contest between the two of them on whose voice can make the baby fall asleep the fastest. Spoiler alert: it’s actually your voice.

He finds out that his baby also loves the sound of him playing bass through sheer accident. He’s lying on the floor while your baby crawls around, just strumming random chords when he notices his baby staring at him. He decides to play the bass line from Feel Good Inc. and it makes their baby smile their cute, gummy smile. He plays a few other notable Gorillaz’ basslines (Starshine, Spitting Out the Demons, etc.) and it actually makes your baby laugh. You and Murdoc end up in tears and split sides on the floor because neither of you understand why your baby is laughing so much at his basslines, but it’s hilarious anyway.

Murdoc hates it whenever anyone asks to carry his baby, unless it’s you or Noodle, of course. He wants to spend as much time as he can with them, and he even (temporarily) gives up smoking so they can grow up healthy.

You and the rest of the band see just how dedicated and loving he is, and it makes you proud. You told him he’d be a good father, and he proves you right every day.

Ever had a song of poem written about you? No, but I’ve written several poems about other people.

When’s the last time you played air guitar? I actually cannot recollect a time when I ever played air guitar. I have done many other, more embarrassing, things though.

What is a sound you hate and one you love? I hate the sound of utensils scraping against plates. I just cannot handle that sound. And I LOVE the sound of rain hitting the roof.

Do you believe in ghosts? Absolutely. I have been haunted from the day I was born and have befriended the ghosts that have attached themselves to me. Maybe that’s why I can write so well….

Do you believe in aliens? Yes, because I had to write an entire essay about their existence. I don’t think they’re going to be humanoid though. More likely just tiny living things on the surface or underneath the surface of other planets but I want to see those little guys thrive!

Do you drive? And if so have you ever gotten yourself into an accident? I do drive! And no, I haven’t gotten into an accident. I’m an incredibly cautious driver so I avoid the crazies.

Do you like the smell of gasoline? ....Sometimes

What was the last movie you watched? Jigsaw, the eighth installment of the Saw movies (spoiler alert: it wasn’t great).

Do you have an obsession right now? When don’t I have an obsession? Right now it’s probably The Flash (Specifically Harry Wells, I am in love with that man) and The Vampire Diaries.

In a relationship? WOW THAT’S HILARIOUS HAHAHAHA NO
