Lucifer runs himself ragged all week getting the party set up (and despite the fact that he’s done this for Jack every time he needs it since he came back into Michael’s life, it still leaves Michael surprised and wondering what happened to the boy who only knew how to bite the hand that fed when Michael abandoned him, when did he learn to be gentle and reliable, why did Michael waste all this time not seeing him?) to the point that he looks like he might fall asleep in front of the birthday cake before Raphael nudges him with their elbow, and he wakes up to sing.

They sing quietly — loud noises hurt Jack’s ears, one of many little oddities, but they rearrange their lives around his needs: no vacuuming unless he’s out of the house and no yelling from room to room — while Jack looks like he’s about to jump right out of his seat with how much he wants to blow out the candles. Gabriel scoops him up in one arm after, lets Jack’s tiny hand curl around the handle of the (dull!) cake knife while his lays over it to guide him, and helps him to cut pieces for them all himself.

Jack can easily heal himself whenever he gets hurt. But instead, he goes to Cas and says “Dad, I hurt my head.” Cas will inspect the cut, and then softly heal it with his Grace before kissing the top of Jack’s head because “kisses make everything better.” Sometimes, Jack goes to Dean and says, “Dean, I hurt my hand,” and Dean will gently stitch up the wound and give Jack a little scooby-doo bandaid just because it makes Jack smile. And sometimes, Jack goes to Sam and says, “Sam, I hurt my shoulder,” and Sam will get an ice pack and wrap Jack in a blanket on the couch and he’ll give him a lollipop just like Dean used to do for him when he was younger.

Dean's fuzzy dissociation in 14x07 "Unhuman Nature" script

If Dean hated Jack, it would ALL be easier

But it's...fuzzy at the edges, a little warped.

NOTE: Dean's actor tries to move his eyes rapidly back-and-forth when he acts this, like a stress-triggered nystagmus. It's very reminiscent of Cas's second death, with Lucifer. I think it's a body language that has been been a part of Dean's character for a long time.

NOTE: Dean has really been turning up the volume on performing!Dean as he tries to charm his way through the grief and put on a brave face to come to grips with what's happening to Jack.

This should inform how we view Michael's obvious lies in 14x10: Nihilism. There is a tendency to immediately recognize that Michael is lying about Sam being a buden, he is lying about Cas being an obligation, and when it comes to Jack...I'm just saying he's also lying here:

This is ALSO an uncomfortable call-forward to just how much AU!Michael's ambivalence and nihilism has damaged Dean in season 15; he shuts all his emotions down and tries to be like AU!Michael. AU!Michael is, as Nick says in 14x17:

And again, we should be informed by Dark Kaia's take in 14x03: Michael, he hurt you.

When Jack's going to die again, that hurts, anger about Mary notwithstanding.

Dean cuts that part away and tries to become the Michael sentiment. For a very long time, Dean has wished to be, perfect, angel-like: "I wish I couldn't feel a damn thing."

It's also Jack's worst fear come to life; and it's no coincidence that Dean uses Michael's words as weapons: "Not like Cas. Not like Sam. Not family. (Just a burden.)"

toddler jack has a frog onesie that he absolutely adores but he refuses to let anyone kiss him when he's wearing it and one day he's wearing the frog onesie and he climbs into cas' lap and says "daddy, i want you to give me a kiss" and cas chuckles as he pulls jack close and asks why. jack responds "because i want to turn into a prince" and cas feels like his heart is going to jump out of his chest. he ever-so-softly kisses jack on the cheek and then another kiss on the forehead and a final kiss on his son's nose. "there you go, my little prince," cas says softly. jack is so happy he spends the next week telling dean and sam and eileen to call him prince jack because daddy's kiss had magic.
