A splenectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the spleen. The spleen is an organ located in the upper left part of the abdomen, under the rib cage. It plays several roles in the body, including:
Filtering Blood: It removes old and damaged red blood cells from the bloodstream.
Fighting Infection: It helps produce white blood cells and stores them, contributing to the body's immune response.
Storing Blood: It stores blood and platelets, which are vital for clotting.
Indications for Splenectomy
A splenectomy may be performed for various reasons, including:
Trauma: Severe injury to the spleen causing internal bleeding.
Blood Disorders: Conditions like idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), hereditary spherocytosis, and thalassemia.
Cancers: Certain cancers like lymphoma or leukemia affecting the spleen. ( Know more about- What is Lymphoma? )
Infections: Rare infections that do not respond to other treatments and cause splenic abscesses.
Other Conditions: Enlarged spleen (splenomegaly) causing discomfort or other complications.
Types of Splenectomy
Open Splenectomy: A large incision is made in the abdomen to remove the spleen. This method is typically used in emergency situations or when the spleen is very large.
Laparoscopic Splenectomy: A minimally invasive approach using small incisions and a camera to guide the surgery. This method usually results in quicker recovery and less pain.
Risks and Complications
While generally safe, splenectomy carries risks, such as:
Infection
Bleeding
Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
Blood clots
Long-term, individuals without a spleen are more susceptible to infections, particularly from encapsulated bacteria like Streptococcus pneumoniae. Vaccinations and prophylactic antibiotics are often recommended to mitigate this risk.
Postoperative Care
Post-surgery, patients typically require:
Pain management
Monitoring for signs of infection or complications
Vaccinations to protect against certain infections
Possible antibiotic prophylaxis, particularly in the early months or years post-surgery
Conclusion
A splenectomy can be a life-saving procedure with numerous indications, primarily related to trauma, blood disorders, or malignancies. Despite its risks, the procedure can effectively address the underlying issues necessitating the removal of the spleen, leading to improved patient outcomes when appropriately managed.

bro i'm bored too so this is perfect (btw this is muffin from the spleenectomy server i just have a different tumblr name)
i recently took a break from banging tim drake around my brain like a tennis ball machine in a glass cage bc i was visiting family but now i am back home and back on my bullshit
IMAGINE: after reversing joker junior on tim, he gets amnesia and is taken in by harley, who at this point has realized that the whole situation with joker and junior was horrible. she's also not mentally stable enough to take care of a whole ass child, since she has no idea who this kid used to be before the brainwashing, so she calls in a couple favors and soon enough, tim is getting passed around in a weird custody arrangement by the whole gotham rogues gallery
meanwhile, bruce is shutting down from grief since he thinks that tim killed joker then himself. jason comes back to a broken father he honestly has no idea how to deal with. the green haze of the lazarus doesn't accept a batman who solemnly takes any accusation jason throws at him like he deserves it. the family heals slowly but surely, and eventually damian joins hearing stories about his predecessor, a kind and bright boy taken from them too soon
tim? is living it up with more parental figures than he can count on both hands, learning the tricks of the trade and finally letting his mastermind brain extend to areas he previously ignored. raising a child brought together the rogues in a way never seen before, and any genuine animosity between them has turned into rivalries at the worst. tim still retains his strong moral compass, and while he doesn't approve of his aunts' and uncles' illegal activities, he'll still bail them out after an attack gone wrong
eventually, whispers of his existence spread around to lower level goons and make their way to red hood's ear. something something the bats have to confront the fact that tim, even without his memories, seems happier and healthier surrounded by career criminals than he's ever been with them
and what does that mean about how they've treated him?
OUCHIE muffin you hurt me heart…. Do it again.
Jason meanwhile is like “damn y’all fucked up didnt you” bc he never met Tim. He’s also vaguely rougue-shaped at this point so he gets to enjoy spoiling his younger bro and rubbing it in his family’s faces.
Damian, who also never met a Tim before now, also gets along with him like a house on fire. They play murder-tag across the rooftops sometimes when he’s on patrol. No real murder, ofc, that’s just what they call it. Super safe dw.
Bruce and Dick are jealous as FUCK but they’re also too caught up in their grief and guilt complexes that they have yet to get over their bullshit about the entire thing

Lovebirds
Tan decided it was finally time for his finacee to the team, after Bonnie broke his heart and nearly destroyed his career, he tossed the idea of love out of the window. And then Y/N barged his way into his life and he was poised to let her stay. He tried to keep her a secret until Street found out, and then Street told the whole team, and in a worldwind romance, 6 months later he was engaged. And now she was becoming apart of his family, so it made since that he met the rest of his.
She met his mom, and though his mom was innately distrusting, when she spoke the traditionally Catoneese greeting, even his mother could put aside her prejudice that Bonnie reinforced, because Y/N put in some effort into learning and respecting their culture.
And now it was time to meet the team. They decided on a locat restaurant for the meeting, because most of them were on call they couldn’t drink, so they settled on dinner. After brief initially meeting, with handshakes and side hugs they all set down the table, and shared small talk over appetizers and diet cokes.
“ Please drink if you want, I would totally be getting wasted but we’re on call,” Street said, motioning to the menu of drinks.
Y/N smiled, “ Oh I can’t, I’m actually on call as well,” she spoke.
Hondo lifted a brow, “ What do you do?”
She lifted the glass to her lips and sipped her lemonade, “ I’m a trauma sergon,” she said.
Hondo smiled at Luca, they always thought Bonnie was too sweet for Tan. He needed someone firm, and tough, someone who could respect what he did everyday, see the worst of humanity and still try to save it.
“ So how did you two meet?” Street asked.
Y/N laughed into her cup, and Tan rolled his eyes, “ he tried to shoot me,” she said smiling.
Most looked at the pair confused, while Chris threw a roll at him from across the table. Hondo’s face folded into anger, before allowing them to explain.
“ Remember that raid we did at the convenience store, we got called into the hostage situation, on 3rd and Brookestone?” he asked the table, he was met with confused nods.
“ I was on my way home from work,  just finished 12 hours in surgery, and I stopped to get something to drink, and suddenly I get pushed into a display and a gun pointed at my head, so of course I do the rational thing and tell him to leave me alone, and the store owner tries to take the gun, and ends up getting shot twice, one in the abdomen and one in the leg, and then the gunman goes crazy. I don’t actually think he menat to shoot anyone, he just had it to scare people, so he ran to the otherside of the store, and his girlfriend starts loosing her mind and waving this knife around and stabbing at people, before they took the cashier hostage, and by then ya’ll where there, and I heard you break down the door, and I saw yall pin the guy down after shooting him in the leg, and then this guy,” she says smiling at Tan, “ comes around the corner and puts a gun at my face, telling me to put my hands up,” she elbows him in the ribs, “so I told him “ if I put my hands up this man is gonna die,” and thats when he realizes that I’m saving the owners life, and calls me a bus. The guy ended up surviving but coded twice on the table, and had to have a spleenectomy,” she added.
“ That’s not even the craziest part,” Tan added, he loved this story, reminded him of a rom-com, “ she was shot, didn’t even realize it until we got to the hospital,” he added, watching the table for thier reaction. They had all been shot at one point or another, and though the bullet only met their vest, they all remebered when Erica got shot, and how adreneline and sheer will kept her standing and allowed her to drag Chris from that house.
“ It didn’t even hit any major organs,” she said waving it off, “ I didn’t even have to have surgery just a few stitches,” she said.
“ I knew she worked at the hospital, and I felt bad for pointing a gun at her head when she was doing the right thing, doing her job, so I went there, and she was in the ER with her hands in this womans chest, literally holding her heart,” he said. Y/N dropped her head at the thought.
She was trying to save the life of a school teacher who was stabbed in a robbery gone wrong. She didn’t make it, Y/N felt the woman’s heart stop and she couldn’t save her. There was just too much damage. She left behind 3 kids and a wife depending on her.
“ The woman didn’t make it,” Y/N cut in, “ it doesn’t matter how many lives you save, you always regret the ones that you can’t. Always remember them, think about what you did next time.”
The table fell silent, in their line of work they always remembered the ones that they lost.
“ Turns out she had been working for 36 straight hours, and even though she was shot she wasn’t on any pain killers so her boss made her take off work, and I felt bad so I bought her a coffee and offered to walk her to the bus stop, and she nearly passed out because she hadn’t eaten.”
“ I was in surgery,” she interrupyed.
“ So I took her to get a burger and some fries,” he smiled, and shrugged his shoulders. “ and the rest was history.” he added.
“ I just barged into my life, and I was poised to let him stay, it’s nice to be with someone who understands, the depth of what we do. Ya’ll save people with guns and I save them with scapels,” she said.
“ So what made you become a surgeon?” Chris asked, loading her chip with cheese, and plopping it in her mouth.
She laughed, “ Why did you become a cop?” she asked, the answer could not be quantified in one sentence, it was usually so complex that few could understand it.
Chris nodded with understanding, she became a cop for so many reasons, and you couldn’t boil it down to one sentence. Y/N felt Tan squeeze her leg underneath the table, they had this conversation before, at the start of their relationship, after they had been together. They spent the night together in bed, curled into eachother like perfectly fit puzzle pieces, and they talked about the why.
“ It’s okay, they’ll understand,” he urged. “ They wanna know you,”
Y/N nodded and sipped her lemonade.
“ Umm, when I was younger my dad was Nonna was hospitalized, she was supposed to die, everybody told me she wasn’t gonna make it to my next birthday but I didn’t believe it because I was a kid, because kids believe in magic, and have fairy dust in their pockets,  and cross their fingers, and play pretend, and she lived past my birthday and 6 more years,” Y/N bit her bottom lip, “ and I realized I had been running from death for 6 years. And when I was in the army, this 12 year old has shrapnel in his chest and his leg was nearly torn off from an explosion and he needed it amputated. But we were in the middle of a war zone and we didn’t have any anesthia, so I had to amputate it while he was awake, and everyone thought he was gonna die from the pain, but he lived, because children believe in star dust and magic and fairies. He was shot two days later,” she added sadly. “ We all do what we do because we’re running from death, alot of surgons think that they’re gods, but if you ask me they’re running from it. We’re all running from it, and theres nothing that you can really do because its gonna catch up. And the lives you save, can almost make up for the ones you can’t.”
“ Wow,” Chris said.
“ You guys make love seem possible again,” Street said awestruck.
“ I didn’t mean to be a downer,” Y/N said woefully.
Tan kissed her on the cheek, and opened his mouth but before he could a loud beeping form Y/N’s belt quieted him down. Y/N fumbled with it, before uncliping the pager from her waistband. She read it once, then quickly stood, Tan used to this grabbed her jacket and purse handing it to her.
“ Ya’ll  might wanna head out, “ she said, shoving her pager in her pocket and shrugging her jacket on, “There is multiple gunshot wounds heading into the hospital,” she took her purse from Tan, but before they could leave, they all got texted at the same time, and they all stood.
“ Right on que,” Tan said standing, kissing his fincee on the cheek, before handing her the keys to his car and she left.
“ I like her,” Street said batting his eyelashes.
“ She seems like a nice enough girl,” Deacon said, “ certainly a step up form Bonnie.”
“ She’s great man, happy for you, and I like her.” said hondo.
“ Well I love her.” Tan said proudly, “ Can’t wait to make her my wife.”

The Locked Door | Freida McFadden | Published 2021 | *SPOILERS*
Tumblr media
Some doors are locked for a reason...
While eleven-year-old Nora Davis was up in her bedroom doing homework, she had no idea her father was killing women in the basement.
Until the day the police arrived at their front door.
Decades later, Nora's father is spending his life behind bars, and Nora is a successful surgeon with a quiet, solitary existence. Nobody knows her father was a notorious serial killer. And she intends to keep it that way.
Then Nora discovers one of her young female patients has been murdered. In the same unique and horrific manner that her father used to kill his victims.
Somebody knows who Nora is. Somebody wants her to take the fall for this unthinkable crime. But she's not a killer like her father. The police can't pin anything on her.
As long as they don't look in her basement.
Nora Davis is a respected general surgeon, often performing life-saving operations on people with issues in their abdomen, such as gallbladder removals, spleenectomies, and appendectomy's to name a few. In her early-mid thirties, she has spent her entire life, since she was 11 years old, hiding from the general public as she has a massive secret. Now Nora Davis, her grandmother's name, she was once Nora Nierling, the daughter of Oregon's most prolific serial killer.
26 years ago, her father was arrested and convicted of murdering at least 18 women, likely to upwards of 30 women though unconfirmed, and is now serving 18 consecutive life sentences in an Oregon state prison. She has not seen her father in all that, but once a week a letter arrives from him that she promptly throws in the garbage as soon as she sees who it is from.
Now, Nora reconnects with an old college flame named Brady, who is bartending at her local haunt. Brady is now a divorced single dad but Nora is too reluctant to get close to him, though they do begin having sex pretty infrequently, but when things begin to get too serious, Nora goes running.
Nora's life is going to change when a detective comes to her practice. Detective Barber is looking into the murders of two of Nora's former patients. Young, female and they are found to have had their hands severed, the exact MO her father used to murder the girls in the past. Someone has figured out who she is, and she doesn't like it.
Nora begins to suspect that it is Brady who is respondible for the murders. After her tires were slashed in the parking lot of her office, Brady offered to have her car fixed, but after she confessed to him who she was and who her father was, Brady became stand offish with her, stating that he couldn't be involved in the mess because of his daughter.
But, the two of them reconcile a little bit after Brady holds up his end of the bargain of having her car fixed. When it begins to look like someone is trying to frame Nora for the murders, having found blood inside her basement, Nora goes to the prison to visit her father, though this doesn't do anything but further her suspicions.
When Brady's landlords neice claims that Brady doesn't have a daughter, Nora leaves his apartment and goes back home. But, another thought occurs to her: that the perpetrator could be her partner, Philip. Also a surgeon, he is a handsome fellow who is a bit of a womanizer. Lately, he has been pursuing their receptionist, a 26-year-old Harper, who has recently been dumped by her long-term boyfriend, Sonny.
With the security company never showing to install her system, Nora decides she is going to stay at a hotel for a weekend as she no longer feels safe in her home, but she finds the truth lying in her basement: Philip is tied up and Harper is the one who has been murdering those young woman.
Harper confesses that she is her younger sister: despite their mother having killed herself in prison after being indicted in the murders herself, Harper survived and was placed up for adoption after their grandmother didn't want anything to do with her. Her adoption was sealed but at 18, she was able to learn who her birth parents were. Harper visited Aaron Nierling in prison, and the two of them had a connection that Nora and Aaron never did, though that was his hope.
Nora, despite being drugged and incapacitated, attempts to figth back. She is successful in getting the gun away from Harper, but Philip had already had one of his hands severed, rendering him unable to perform surgeries ever again.
When Nora comes too, Brady informs her that he was able to keep Harper down until the police arrived and that he and Philip both confirmed that Nora had nothing to do with the girls who were murdered and that it was Harper who did everything. Harper had been so devastated by her boyfriend, Sonny's car accident that Nora inevitable caused after he was following her believing him to have been a former patient of hers that she had seen at the bar who wasn't too happy when she denied his advances.
A year later, Nora and Brady are engaged and she has met Brady's daughter, Ruby. The two of them are at a farmer's market, where she inevitably runs into an old classmate of hers named Marjorie, though Marjorie doesn't recognize her. Nora wasn't very nice to her when they were children, even getting her to play a game called Hunter and Prey, where the outcome we never do truly find out, though Marjorie injured her ankle and Nora put a stop to the game, and later, Nora kept the other girls in her friend group from picking on her, which was also the day she found out her father and mother were arrested. We also learn that Nora was the one to have called the police after she found one of the girls in the basement, but by the time the police arrived and arrested her parents, Mandy Johannson was dead. Nora was devastated to learn this, as she was hoping to try to save the young girl's life.
In the end, we also learn that Harper was excited to have found out she had a sister, and that she believes like her, Nora is harboring some dark secrets. Especially she noticed that after a patient and his wife had left the practice, the wife, Mrs. Kellogg, returned. Nora had asked Mrs. Kellogg if her husband was hurting her but she denied it at the time, returning later to speak with Nora in her office. Harper witnessed Nora take a drug, and upon eavesdropping at the door, learned that Nora was giving it to the patient's wife, stating that if she administers the drug while he's asleep, it will look like he had a heart attack in his sleep, which was later confirmed by the man's wife, arriving to inform Nora that he had passed on, and she wanted to thank her for all she had done at the time for her husband.
Harper knows that Nora isn't as innocent as she looks.

Laparoscopic surgery, also known as minimally invasive surgery, encompasses various types of procedures across different medical specialties.
Some common types of laparoscopic surgery include:
Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy: This procedure involves the removal of the gallbladder and is commonly performed to treat gallstones and other gallbladder-related conditions.
Laparoscopic Appendectomy: It involves the removal of the appendix and is performed to treat appendicitis, an inflammation of the appendix.
Laparoscopic Hernia Repair: Hernias, which occur when an organ pushes through an opening in the muscle or tissue that holds it in place, can often be repaired using laparoscopic techniques.
Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication: This procedure is performed to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) by wrapping the top of the stomach around the lower esophagus to reinforce the lower esophageal sphincter.
Laparoscopic Hysterectomy: It involves the removal of the uterus and possibly other reproductive organs and is performed to treat conditions such as uterine fibroids, endometriosis, or certain types of cancer.
Laparoscopic Colectomy: This procedure involves the removal of part or all of the colon (large intestine) and is performed to treat conditions such as colon cancer, diverticulitis, or inflammatory bowel disease.
Laparoscopic Nephrectomy: It involves the removal of a kidney and is performed to treat conditions such as kidney cancer or severe kidney disease.
Laparoscopic Prostatectomy: This procedure involves the removal of the prostate gland and is commonly performed to treat prostate cancer.

Random question since i couldn't find it googling but does Tim have allergies? I know he's immunocompromised since the spleenectomy but that's not the same thing, right?
I believe he has normal seasonal allergies. I vaguely remember seeing a panel going around where Tim is complaining about his allergies to Alfred, but I don’t recall any food allergies. (And I could also be mixing the panel up, since a very quick Google search isn’t helping me find it)
And no, immunocompromised isn’t the same as allergies. Autoimmune diseases can cause food intolerances which is something I have, but I’ve never heard of missing a spleen causing a food allergy. His body will just have difficulty fighting off infections, in particular.

Sam is back. He had a spleenectomy yesterday and they found three masses, a large one and two small. The large one had ruptured which was what caused his internal bleeding. The masses have been sent to be tested and we won't know whether they're hematomas, benign tumors, or malignant carcinomas until a week.
Has anyone here had a dog with carcinomas? If that's what his growths are unfortunately his options looks bleak. We can either put him down next week, or he can get chemotherapy and maybe live another nine months. I don't know how humane this is, especially since the vet said that since these dogs have no way of telling us they are in pain, they usually die suddenly by hemorrhaging out. But I was thinking maybe, if the news turns out to be bad, he could get the chemo for maybe a month or two and we'd spoil the hell out him before putting him down? Has anyone done something like this? How hard is the chemo on the dogs?

Bivalent boosted. ✅ That makes five shots. I even had to get a new vaccine card. 🤷🏼‍♀️ The perks of being immunocompromised. (Sickle cell and full spleenectomy). Ask me about my emergency surgery, insane abdominal scar and hospital stint. Many out there don’t “look sick” but we’re the ones standing at a distance, carrying the burden that largely goes unnoticed. I’ll never forgive or forget those who were proponents of health supremacism: an ideology that those who are ‘healthy’ wouldn’t and shouldn’t have to deal with fallout of the pandemic. The truth is, anyone can become sick, or disabled at any moment. There’s a reason why we do our best to socialize the burdens of those are challenged the most in society. I unfortunately, lost the genetic lottery in this regard. All I ask is awareness and accommodation. I’ll never stop sounding the flag for many of us who don’t have a platform to do so. So, if you’re reading this, remember that many of us bear the extra costs and weight of a society that generally could care less. Mandates are getting lifted, many are returning to a lifestyle of before the pandemic, leaving the immunocompromised more vulnerable and susceptible to Covid. Wear a mask when you can, get vaccinated if you’re able to and hopefully in the near future the pandemic will hopefully be a distant memory. https://www.instagram.com/p/CiS5LdHphEl/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
